First look: PlayStation 5’s next-generation user experience

PS5 UX features revealed: Control Center, Activities, Game Help, and more.

With less than a month until launch, we’re thrilled to share our very first look at the PlayStation 5 console’s user experience (UX). The new UX is completely centered on the player – to provide you a truly next-generation experience with deeper immersion that quickly connects you to great games and a passionate gaming community.

First look: PlayStation 5’s next-generation user experience

We believe your play time is valuable and should be meaningful, and all the new features we’re delivering are inspired by that concept and vision. The new UX introduces several new features designed to make your gaming experiences more fun, engaging, personalized and social.

One of the highlights is a new Control Center, which provides immediate access to almost everything you need from the system at a single press of the PlayStation button on the DualSense wireless controller – all without leaving the game.

PS5 UX

We’ve also added a new feature called Activities, designed to bring you closer to the key elements of gameplay. Activities are displayed via on-screen cards in the Control Center, which enables you to discover new gameplay opportunities, go back to things you missed, jump directly into levels or challenges you want to play, and much more. Some Activity cards can be put in picture-in-picture mode, so you can view them without having to leave the game.

Navigating the interface, switching between games, and hopping into online matches occurs quickly, as we rebuilt the entire software stack from the console to the network to bring you a truly next-generation experience. We believe the less time you spend waiting to interact with the system, the more time you will have to spend playing games.

We wanted to give you an early peek at a part of the PS5 UX journey in our video walkthrough, so we hope you enjoy the tour. Also, keep in mind this is in a pre-production environment, so there may be some minor changes, but it’ll give you a taste of what to look forward to when PS5 launches in November.

    Is the store going to get a wish list feature? Because I know there’s a lot of smaller games that I run across and want to think about, or get when my backlog is smaller, but then I can never find it again. This would be extra helpful with the notice that wish lists are being deleted from the web store.

    Cool UI.

    You guys really need to be more transparent about specifically which data will be shared and how through the ps5. And what data of ours you would be selling to third parties without our knowledge or consent other then scrolling through ToS to use the home console we’ve bought lol..

    you need to be very clear and very careful especially with personal information, which lets face it.. you’ve completely and utterly failed at several times in the past. Respectfully you can put whatever the hell you like in your ToS but the moment you accept our money, you provide us a service not the other way round. and we deserve to be able to opt out and in, optionally to whatever schemes your money making teams have thought up.

    we are your customers, rub us the wrong way give people any reason to close their wallets and they will.

    Looks amazing the game help feature looks superb. I love the way everything seems really effortless.

    I would have liked to show how we follow games and how the news appears. Would have been also been nice to see the streamlined store in full

    Hope that there’s some solid voice command functionality, especially with the Dualsense having a mic built in.

    PLEASE READ SONY!

    One thing that would be great to add (if not already included) would be a folder or tab to favorite games that you want to cue up to play but not have downloaded just yet! That way when I finish a game I can delete that one and add the next on my list too downloaded 👍🏻

      not Possible to redownload games and delete constantly unless you have enoth money to waste on that external and expandible storige is the only way and o yess less loading times but insane long games switch transfers between storige drives you see sony only caters to PS+ members who use the cloud and leave users who have downloadcaps bad internet not the most expecive premium version of internet out in the cold you can only game fast if you give enoth money for it

    I just want folders. PS4 goofed on launch and didn’t have them. PS3 had them. PS4 finally got them later!

      thats why it has only 660GB storige Sony does not want to sell you many games dubbled down on the small SSD storige so you can have bare minimum icons on screen

    I’ve loved all interfaces since PS2 and this looks like my least favorite on first glance. Way too much focus on social media, all kinds of annoying suggestions (not a fan of the cards thing at all). I like my interfaces as clean and simple as possible. it does look good in an aesthetic manner, as usual for Sony . The Home screen is the best part, I love how clean it looks and how much of the background you see without the screen being cluttered with text and pictures (except for that annoyingly random ‘must see’, which can hopefully be switched off)… On a side note, does that mean there’ll be no more dynamic or general backgrounds? It seems to display a background hub for every game in question. So it doesn’t really matter that the tiles are so small. I do hope we get to customize that upper bar because I especially hate clutter around my games and their covers.

    Other than that, Game Help does sound like it could have some potential in terms of ease of use and avoiding spoilers, if it works right… Showing a 10 sec solution of finding an outfit in LBP doesn’t exactly compare to the hours of investigation that go into some of these games… I’ve been completing story charts in Detroit:Become Human lately and it’s complex even with guides on a laptop beside me.

      Oh, and the worst part of all, though I pretty much saw it coming and prepared for it (had a little hope for Sony to still do the right thing), is seeing that confirmation during LBP that PS+ will be required for online play yet another generation. *facepalm*

    Are we able to customize which cards show on our console? Id like to permanently block all “stories”, corporate news and advertising. Like you said, it’s about us the gamers and the games….. RIGHT???

    Sorry mate. That is incorrect. The way a Freesync/Gsync monitor/TV works is matching the refresh rate of the monitor to the fps output of the console/PC.
    Meaning when an intense scene in a game drops to 24fps for example, the screen refresh also drops to 24fps.

    This eliminates the immersion breaking judder and latency as well as tearing.
    All of which are some of the worst things about fluctuating framerates.

    Also PS5 DOES support Freesync/Gsync as per the official PS5 spec sheet on the PS blog.

    Will we be able to customize Cards in order to change positions of some of them? For example I’d like to have my other games in the first Card to switch between them faster because on the video it took some time to slide to the very end of the Cards to switch game.

    Ha you put that share screen feature there as if it was as simple as that,it’s pretty cool but how much of a internet connection speed will it require to work as smooth as shown in the video?…forgetting not everyone has internet from the god realm?…of course as always lol.

    Record videos at 4K?…I heard the “up to” but I hope there is the option to record them at 720p.Your lame 825gb HDD will come with what?…700gb that we can use?….bet your so called next gen system will still be a step back from the PS3 and require us to install the full game in the HDD even if you have the disc so having 4K videos taking up space is an instant NO.

    The activities of games seem like a mess and a tad confusing and the help thing is laughable…I see at who you’re aiming your product Sony lol pathetic.

    Overall it’s ok…doesn’t look much different from the PS4 to be honest.

    Wanna see how friend’s activities will work and if the ones from PS4 will be there…doubt but oh well.

    Can you see your friends who are online and playing on PS3 and Vita?…ha silly me y’all removed that from PS4 on 8.00 imagine if PS5 would have anything to do with PS3 and Vita.

    Locking game guides and tips behind the PS Plus paywall feels shockingly anti-consumer – particularly if sub-accounts under a subscribed account can’t access them.

    For example this feature could be brilliant for my kids, who have sub-accounts under my own. But will they even be able to access the feature? Or are Sony expecting them to additionally subscribe to PS Plus (not happening)?

    I feel this is something Sony need to address in a pro-consumer manner, and fast.

      Sony only wants to Sell Subscribtions PS+, PSnow ,… and is being very Anti-consumer i would not be surprised if they make a new subscription just for PS5 added to the others just like streamig the more Subs the better for their wallets by bleeding ours

    This article could really benefit from a nice bullet-point list of new/improved features. I did watch the video, but many things are just barely mentioned in passing. It would be nice to have increased clarity about what things will be explicitly included (even if they are in flux).

    Why didn’t Sony give us more time to prepare for the PS3/Vita website store shut down? You know full well the console stores are practically unusable (crash all the time) and missing lots of content (some games don’t even show up) yet you send as an email telling us the websites will not offer PS3/Vita content in just 10 days?

    Why do you hate your legacy so much? It seems every two weeks I have to come here and complain since you keep making stupid decisions one after the other. Will you implement a killswitch firmware update so our PS4s become unusable and we have to buy PS5 next?

    Please do a last Killzone where you really ban toxic players and glitchers, you do so the game have no glitches that could be found and utilised, you fix every bug so there won’t be any bugs (because there are a lot of bugs in Killzone Shadow Fall) and that you actually finish the story, because right now neither of Helghast or ISA are the victorious side. After fixing and doing all these things, then you could stop the franchise, but you MUST do all these listed things.

    I like it more than PS4 (What’s New and Live from PlayStation are useless to me). Activities are nice, and news from PlayStation and publishers means I don’t need a web browser on my console. It’s also good to have games and media seperated to different tabs.

    Hi. I’m not a fan of this ui. It seems cluttered and has things I don’t want. Is it going to always be pushing things that look like ads? I would rather that be in the game store. I want to be able to customize the ui for the things I want. Preferably the PS3 Cross Media Bar was brilliant and just the right amount of features that I would like to have. I don’t want all kinds of graphics covering my custom background. I really hope you expand on the live background features. I would like to have cool complex backgrounds. I would like to be able to have great ways to organize my downloaded games without looking at a library tab with graphics covering my background. Thanks

    For Me, its just like an PS3 Remake. But dont get me wrong, i love ps3, i still have it. The home menu they get better, but the store was system integrated, they updated to an app, it get bad… I am hyped, and i cant wait to have one PS5! and i am more hype, because, sony didnt show the “Ace” in their deck hand. The “Pro version of PS5”. And that it gets me LIT.

    Very curious to know how the transition will be between the 4 and 5, specifically could I simply unplug my external HDD from my 4 and go straight into the 5 and play? Or will it require a reformat and redownloading of everything on it. From what I can tell the first month or two I might have both consoles running and bouncing back and forth between each respectively. Would that cause any issues from my PSN account?
