First look: PlayStation 5’s next-generation user experience

PS5 UX features revealed: Control Center, Activities, Game Help, and more.

With less than a month until launch, we’re thrilled to share our very first look at the PlayStation 5 console’s user experience (UX). The new UX is completely centered on the player – to provide you a truly next-generation experience with deeper immersion that quickly connects you to great games and a passionate gaming community.

First look: PlayStation 5’s next-generation user experience

We believe your play time is valuable and should be meaningful, and all the new features we’re delivering are inspired by that concept and vision. The new UX introduces several new features designed to make your gaming experiences more fun, engaging, personalized and social.

One of the highlights is a new Control Center, which provides immediate access to almost everything you need from the system at a single press of the PlayStation button on the DualSense wireless controller – all without leaving the game.

PS5 UX

We’ve also added a new feature called Activities, designed to bring you closer to the key elements of gameplay. Activities are displayed via on-screen cards in the Control Center, which enables you to discover new gameplay opportunities, go back to things you missed, jump directly into levels or challenges you want to play, and much more. Some Activity cards can be put in picture-in-picture mode, so you can view them without having to leave the game.

Navigating the interface, switching between games, and hopping into online matches occurs quickly, as we rebuilt the entire software stack from the console to the network to bring you a truly next-generation experience. We believe the less time you spend waiting to interact with the system, the more time you will have to spend playing games.

PS5 UX

We wanted to give you an early peek at a part of the PS5 UX journey in our video walkthrough, so we hope you enjoy the tour. Also, keep in mind this is in a pre-production environment, so there may be some minor changes, but it’ll give you a taste of what to look forward to when PS5 launches in November.

We can’t wait for you to check out PS5’s next-generation UX for yourself next month! Let us know which feature you’re most excited about in the comments.

  • Looks awesome!!! Can’t wait till I get a PS5 someday =)

    • Someday :) Good thing Cyberpunk 2077 is releasing around the same time, and I prefer playing on the systems they were designed for to begin with anyway.

  • Nice! Can’t wait to play :3

  • Please support 1440p input/output. I would really love not to have to upscale from 1080p on my 1440p monitor.

  • okay, but can we have the old Party and Message system please? This new system sucks and you need to realize I don’t play with the same people all the time.
Yesterday I had to take my Destiny 2 clan list and also turn it into a Party Group (Which is REDUNDANT) but we don’t always play as a group of 5 or 6 people, sometimes it’s me and one other, or it might be 3, or 4.

So now each time I play with a different combination of players, I have new groups every single time and it’s clogging up my messages. I hate this system. I hated it in beta, still hate it now, and will continue to hate it on PS5.

  • ‘Estimate level time tracking’

Speedrunners — ‘Oh you poor, sweet child XD XD’

  • I’m very thrilled for this and can’t wait it’s fantastic and I’m ready to experience it.
a little under a month seems so far away now awesome job Sony.

  • What about the Folders feature? Is it available day one?

  • Man this looks beautiful and what I love about it. It’s the ever evolving XMB from the PS3.

  • Looks nice and roomy.

  • Will we be able to use our themes that we purchased on PS4 on PS5?

  • Bro this is dope we can personalize our store now and I see ratchet and clank could the release date come soon I hope so I grew up with it

    • Totally agree – kinda why I’m begging for PSNow in Australia, can’t play the older R&C games without it! :-(

  • If only real people will get to experience the PS5 at launch and you hadn’t allowed bots and scalpers to scoop up all the preorders. Maybe next year we can experience the PS5?

  • Loving the new ux can’t wait till November 19th to get my hands on it

  • Why are the tiles so small on the dashboard? Looks like the current dashboard bug on ps4 which makes the overview beneath certain games sometimes appear tiny when navigating. Should’ve kept them the same size as before.

    • I’ve been getting something similar since I got a 4K. Never had it on my previous Full HD. Sometimes the overview ends up right behind the game tile and is only a little bigger.

    • And the tiles are probably so small since each game has its own background and hub apparently. So I assume when you switch between games the entire background changes to show what you’re on, and the top bar is just a quick overview.

  • PS+ required for game hints is a let down, much like how they locked Share Play behind PS+ on PS4 as well. I’d just like to have everything available to me without PS+. I wonder what other great features will need PS+ though.

    • I hope sony is not going to increase their ps plus rate as ps5 is coming now in November.

    • PS+ required for basic online (now confirmed) is a major let down. It’s entirely devoted to digital and as an advocate for physical I get little to nothing out of it. It just doesn’t make sense to combine online costs and access (for those who care about their bandwidth) with a subscription that lets you download games monthly. That’s exactly why I prefer physical, so I don’t have to download (and actually own it)… I don’t understand why they insist on forcing PS+ on us just to get online. Just separate the costs and make online+cloudsaves a cheaper option (20) opposite a cheaper PS+ without online (40),and keep the current combo of PS+ and online (60) in case people do want both and don’t want to sub twice. That seems like a fair deal to me, much better than forcing parts of your audience into a full package. Do your own thing like you did with PS3. Bad enough to pay for online in the first place if you didn’t come from Xbox and are used to that, combining it with PS+ to jack up price is the worst. The only thing I ever hated about Playstation.

  • Hey Playstation, can we watch YouTube or any other video apps in a split screen while playing our games? If so, can we adjust the audio settings to where we can hear youtuber audio instead of the game?

  • The new UI looks amazing, I hope we get to see some more soon!
Would be good to know where the trophies we have are hidden? I’m guessing in the user area.
Also if media tiles are movable, particularly if we don’t subscribe to Disney but want to preference Netflix or Stan first etc.

    Is PSNow coming to Australia?

Also, aside from all this awesomeness, would be good to know if the HDMI 2.1 cable comes in the box with the ps5, not sure if my local tech store has one, and if they do, should I get one early, if not supplied?

Thanks for all the hard work you guys have put into the system, very excited for November 12! Just bought a X9000H today which arrives tomorrow to really get the full experience! Also, I think I was sleeping on Sackboy! Gotta get that soon!

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

    • Oh, if possible for accessibility in UI and games, if text could be resizable – not everyone has perfect eyesight, also text to speech could be good for some people as well, and translations.

(Sorry, just thinking more about what could be great to see next – like PSNow in Australia!….wait, said that already!)

    • I stopped using Netflix on PS4 since Disney cut in line :)

Just a rumor, but I believe an HDMI 2.1 cable will be included.

I recently got the XH90 too :) Loved experiencing BF5 with low input lag for the first time. But third person games looked a little off to me (especially motion). Eventually traded it in for the LG CX because I wanted to try OLED (came from Full HD).
Great tv for its price though, and no risk of burn-in :) Really wanted to stick with Sony but what a shame they (who are in the unique position of being both a console and tv manufacturer) didn’t release a future proof, low input lag OLED prior to PS5…

  • Hello Sony,

My impression of your video is that the so-called hints for games will be available to those who pay for PS Plus. Is this true?

  • Bring on the second look!

  • Arigatou!!! Thank You for the UI and part feature reveal, Now im happy! I cant wait to get a PS5! 😷

  • Does the PS5 support 1080p? im a broke boy I used all my money on ps5 equipment

  • This is awesome! Thanks for sharing!

  • It’d be awesome if I could use my purchased themes from PS4 on PS5

    • That’s another thing I’m really worried about. I LOVE themes and it would be a damn shame if PS5 doesn’t have them. I’d be happy with PS4’s themes. I just want the dynamic background that I can choose. That’s all. Don’t make it like Switch or Xbox.

    • yes it would hopefully Sony complies

  • I love it. I CANNOT WAIT TO GET IT IN MY HANDS

  • Is there an option to view your trophies? I didn’t see a dedicated trophy icon like the PS3, PS4, and Vita.

  • Does it have a web broswer? It’s pretty helpful for large RPGs with wikia articles or youtube walkthroughs. And why isn’t Facebook supported anymore? What is the point of a sharing feature if I can only use Twitter? I don’t even use FB a whole lot but I enjoyed sharing screenshots and clips with friends. It’s weird that Sony doesn’t want to use such a huge social media platform.

  • The ps5 ui looks amazing and I cant wait to use it I got my pre order already. But sony please revert the ps4 update we cant even kick people from partys and we have to make a message group just to have a party with other people it is a inconvenience, plus the record this is understandable but a lot of people dont like it including myself.

  • Honestly if you would have just made the ps4 but with more stuff like the backwards compatibility and stuff it would be great also the cards thing is a little too much it looks like you focused on that more than anything else also please fix the parts on p4s and just have the old ps4 parts as the ps5 partys and it would be better (my opinion)

  • Awesome! I am loving it so far and I’m very excited for launch (If I can find a unit)! Now we would just like to see a bit more of the Boost Mode to PS4 games and backwards compatibility options!

  • Looks really good. Can’t wait for trophy progress tracking, have wanted that for years. The activity cards look nice too, though I wonder if it’s something that might meet the same fate as the Touchpad, which got totally forgotten by developer, a little while into the previous gen.

  • This UI is a true next gen experience and the Design is a Masterpiece!

  • This looks tough

  • Doesn’t look all that good Sony gotta be honest with ya. But in still excited for other things

  • As long as we still have custom button assignments like on PS4. Also, since some games like Fall Guys are stupid enough to not include the ability to invert the camera, that should be added to the accessibility options as well.

This is all I ask for. I use it literally all the time on PS4, PC, and Switch. Some of us really like being able to play how we want to instead of relying on developers to come up with control options and good control schemes (they so often fail at this)

  • will there be a quick resume like option? or basically can you continue progress from an older game after leaving to play another one?

  • If you can’t sort your game list in the Trophy menu alphabetically again, like you could on PS3 and Vita, I’m going to be severely disappointed…

  • Nice but very superficial. Need to see some of the really important and non social features. Like for instance, switching between games in and out of suspended state (if there’s any). Support for VRR, 120Hz TVs, other resolutions (1440p/ 1080p), external drives, folders, wallpapers and themes, etc. Most people don’t have 4K sets, yet, will the console come pre-set for 1080p for maximum compatibility with older TVs just like the PS3 did (default to 480i out of the box)? Trophy management? Media server client support? Audio settings? Just some of the more important things to take into account for a next showing. Thank you.

  • I wish and hope there have been more modernizations to the OS and UI that were not shown. This video favored demonstrating social media focused features. As it was with the PS3 and PS4, social features seem to be the focus for Sony, leaving other useful features and quality of life improvements for later in the console lifecycle. In doing so, Sony is cluttering the UI with cards/tiles hoping to drive social engagement.

I hope things like folder organization are already present, and hoping for things like better storage management, more control/info for the audio/video settings, etc.

Ultimately, I want to feel like Sony is thinking of ways to enhance the user experience for individual gamers, and is not singularly focused on driving social media / brand engagement. I personally came away from this presentation believing that the PS5 OS v1.0 will be missing features from PS4 OS v8.0, but I sincerely hope Sony is just not marketing those things, and haven’t neglected them.

    • Totally agree on too much focus on social media.

    • Sony is going social media censor dubble standerds cater to platform destroyers look at its path comics movies series now gaming destroying Star Wars and Star-Trek,Dr Who and anything populair

  • This looks really great! Love that this was built for multi-tasking and easy access to all sorts of stuff. Screen sharing and video watching with PiP or Side-by-Side seems awesome! The next thing I too would love to see are technical specifics: A/V settings, etc.

    Now… if only I could get a PS5 Pre-order!!

  • This really got me hyped big time. I waited so long to see the UI and I am pleasantly surprised. Really liked what I have seen so far.

  • I think they should go back to the old way of the party settings were and just record the party’s they really did not need to switch the party settings like that now it poop

  • Very Impressed by the new UX. Just Simple & Clean.

  • I look the video in you tube. It impressed me so far. Is really good compared to ps4. The User interface is more easy. I liked so much.

PS: Is my first time in one blog and my English is half.

  • I’m wondering if will it have 5G support connection!.
By what we sow, looks like this consol require fast Internet connection

  • Sony please update the new PS5 camera to be compatible with the PSVR. The better tracking would be a welcomed addition.

  • The PS3 UI was the best.

  • Sweet!! I love the interactions with the games, where you can see level progress. Did I catch that right, where the time left is based on your actual gameplay? That’s awesome!

  • I bet Sony can’t wait to release a Firmware Update for PS5 on Day 1 😵

  • They didn’t show enough, I want to see the ins and outs of the UI.

  • When you say more personalised, i worrie, the last time you personalised ps4 all you did was make advertisments (recommendations) in the video section, that are uneditatable, uncloseable and just slowed the systems down and offered NOTHING useful, if you kept that for Ps5, or even expanded upon it, then i just don’t want one! And won’t be spending my money on one.
