When the PlayStation 5 launches this November, more than 99 percent of the 4000+ games available on PS4 will be playable on PS5. We know you have questions about how PS4 games will work on PS5, so here is a quick overview on some common questions we’ve seen from the PlayStation community.

What console generation games are supported with PS5’s backward compatibility feature?

We are focused on the huge catalog of games on PlayStation 4, and we’re pleased that more than 99% of PS4 games will be playable on PS5 on day one. This includes games that have defined the PS4 generation – from critically acclaimed PlayStation exclusives like The Last of Us Part II and Ghost of Tsushima, to blockbuster hits from our third-party partners.

What is the difference between playing PS4 games on the PS5 Digital Edition console, versus the PS5 console with the Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive?

The gaming experience on both models will be the same. However, how you access the content to play will differ:

PS5 Digital Edition

  • You will be able to play digital versions of your compatible PS4 games on the PS5 Digital Edition console. These will be compatible PS4 digital games you have already purchased, or plan to purchase, via PlayStation Store on PS4, PS5, web or PlayStation mobile app.
  • Since there is no disc drive, you won’t be able to play your PS4 disc-based games on the PS5 Digital Edition.

PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive

  • You can play digital versions of your compatible PS4 games you downloaded from PlayStation Store on PS4, PS5, web or PlayStation mobile app.
  • You can also use physical PS4 game discs.

When you sign in to PS5 with your account for PlayStation Network, you will automatically see your library of played PS4 content through the menu.

Be sure to keep the PS5 console updated to the latest system software update available, and apply all available game patches to the game.

What is the PS4 game experience like on PS5?

PS4 titles get even better on PS5. Select PS4 titles will see increased loading speeds on the PS5 console, and will also leverage Game Boost, offering improved or more stable frame rates. Some titles with unlocked frame rates or dynamic resolution up to 4K may see higher fidelity. Additionally, PS4 games will also take advantage of some of PS5’s new UX features, but more to come on that later.

Are games from PlayStation VR backward compatible?

Yes, PlayStation VR games are included among the thousands of PS4 games that are playable on PS5. Playing PS VR games on a PS5 console requires a PS VR headset, PlayStation Camera for PS4* and a PlayStation Camera adaptor (no purchase required. Visit playstation.com/camera-adaptor for details). For the best PS VR experience on PS5 we recommend using a DualShock 4 wireless controller. Selected games may require PS Move motion controllers or be compatible with the PS VR aim controller. The new HD camera for PS5 is not compatible with PS VR. The PS VR headset, PS Camera, DualShock 4 wireless controller, PS Move controllers and PS VR aim controller are all sold separately from PS5.

What about PS4 games on PS Now and PS Plus?

Backward compatible PS4 games included in PS Plus or PS Now will run on PS5.

Can I stream PS4 games on PS5?

Yes, Remote Play from PS4 to PS5 and PS Now streaming are supported. The benefit of streaming is that you can save your storage space on PS5. Please note that PS4 games will not leverage PS5’s Game Boost through streaming.

How do PS4 game transfers and game saves work between the two consoles?

You can transfer digital games, game data, and game saves from a PS4 console to a PS5 console using LAN cables, or by connecting wirelessly (WiFi). If you’ve already stored PS4 games and game data in the external USB storage device connected to your PS4, you can bring them over to PS5 with that external USB storage device. And if you are a PS Plus member, you can also sync PS4 game saves on PS5 through cloud storage.

Please note that the ability to transfer game saves between a PS4 version and a PS5 version of the same game is a developer decision, and will vary title by title for cross-generational games.

For Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, when players decide to upgrade from PS4 to PS5 their game saves will transfer.* Sackboy: A Big Adventure also will support game save transfers from PS4 to PS5 in an update that will be delivered shortly after the release of the game.* We’ll share additional details on both games closer to launch.

How will I know which PS4 games aren’t playable?

Games that are only playable on PS4 will be noted on PlayStation Store as playable on “PS4 only.” We have a list of games that are only playable on PS4, along with additional information on backward compatibility here: playstation.com/ps5-backwards-compatibility

*If players originally purchase a PS4 game disc, the PlayStation 5 with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive is required to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version of the game and transfer their saves over.

    Maybe they broke the party functionality on purpose and their real goal was to listen into your private party conversations. Much like the American Government does to cell phones and email. So now they will “fix the system” correcting the party issue but leave the chat recording…

    Why is Sony making two PlayStation 5’s where one is digital and one is disc why not make it like the os4 where you can play disc and digital all on one pc because some people might have half there’s games on disc and digital so there pretty much paying for a pa5 just to waste money on some of the same games they had it’s just weird.

      The disc version can play digital and disc games. The digital only is just for those who don’t buy physical copies of games. If you buy physical games, then get the normal ps5.

    Regarding PlayStation Store, do not remove the web browser / mobile version’s functionality for apps, avatars, themes, PS3, PSP, and Vita/PSTV content. The on-console Store apps are borderline useless (or entirely defunct, in the case of the PSP), with several items only accessible via the current web version. Furthermore, after all these years, there are users like me with thousands of items in their Download Lists, but there is no way of sorting, filtering, or searching through these lists except through user-created browser extensions, like the eminently useful PSDLE. Without community efforts, the usability of my legacy systems would be severely hampered. If you’re going to chokepoint functionality this hard, just close the entire range of the Stores; otherwise, keep something up for us to get any kind of mileage out of your aged setups.

    Will you remaster older games like Final Fantasy Crisis core or Legend of Dragoon even Dot Hack originals with Liminality precursor to dot hack sign + inyuyasha needs more love as well as final fantasy 4,5,6+crono trigger + chrono cross those would a legendary collection with 7,8,9 remastered already will you do this for a playstation

    I know 4k games will be downscaled to 1440p for 120fps boost mode but im wondering if ps5 supports 1440p resolution ? Since the ps4 pro just ran it at 1080p on my 1440p moniter.

    Please can you confirm 1440 native output.
    I like many people are looking for the best monitor for the PS5 and this information affects the decision. I see no reason to withhold this information. XBox has been transparent about this and it would be greatly appreciated if this was the case with Sony as well. If it does not it would not by any means turn me off the PS5 though it would mean I can make an informed decision about my monitor purchase.

    I have sony bravia smart 1080p tv ..how much fps will i be getting ….i cant play in 4k as my tv is not compatible..ps5 can give 120 fps at 4k resolution.
    Then obviously at 1080p i should getting more fps right???…i know fps depends on refresh rate of my tv …so how much fps will i be getting guys???

    Hi, my brothers and I bought a PS4 together. In order to share games and a PSN we opened an account for each of us plus one joined account for purchases. This time we plan on buying separate PS5 consoles. Will we be able to divide our games?

    Please note that I mean divide as in each one gets different games and not each one gets the same game.

      Have joined account on both systems and download which ever games you want but downside you will need to switch between you the primary for the account to play the games with your main account

    I also think that Sony should keep the online services for the PlayStation 3 going even after the PlayStation 5 is released cause I still have mine and I love playing it online and single player story mode plus I still see people playing PS3 online even to this day and I have a lot of PS3 games I love playing and I’m gonna play them until the day I die also I use my PS3 for streaming still such as Netflix and Amazon prime. Please Sony don’t kill the online services for the PlayStation 3 keep it running I feel like I’m not the only one who would want this.

      This is a good point. A lot of PS3 games have story DLC and other DLC content that would become totally inaccessible if the PS3 PlayStation Store was ever shut down.

      Some PS3 games are also very reliant on updates to fix issues. Skyrim on PS3 has severe performance issues without the updates being installed.

    Haven’t seen anyone ask this question, I have a PS4 not a PS4 pro. Does the PS5 when putting in a PS4 game automatically play it @ it’s highest spec possible. Example I put Fallout 4 in the PS5 will it play it as if its on PS4 pro. So I’m not only getting a new next gen console also getting a PS4 pro upgrade on some of my games?

    So I have a question, I know assassins creed black flag should work with he PS5 but I originally purchased the game on the PS3 and upgraded to the PS4 version so to play the game I have to have the PS3 disc inserted. Will I still be able to do this to play the game on PS4?

    I am a VR only player and it’s main reason I am looking forward to the improvements to my current VR games, a little worried that I won’t be able to play my games on day 1. I have vacation for that week and time is running out… :(

    Its great that we can transfer game data saves and we can also play vr games with the vr system on ps5….But to play vr we need an adapter for the old camera..And this is sad because we hoped that the new one works!!where do we find that adapter anyone knows??I preorder a ps5 with the new camera to play vr games…And know i knows that i need an adapter but i don’t know where to find…If you’re the customers how this will sound to you??no offence just asking…And sorry about my english..Thank you..

      If you ordered it from the PS direct site then they usually charge you for orders and pre-orders around the time it ships. They will put a prior authorization charge on your card to verify the funds are there a few days in advance. The PS5 media remote I ordered is supposed to arrive on Oct 30th and they just put the charge thru today. So if they do it in a similar way then I would expect them to charge you around Nov 5th-7th. Hope that helps.
