Introducing DualSense, the New Wireless Game Controller for PlayStation 5

See the first images of DualSense, which will bring the sense of touch to PS5 gameplay.

Weā€™ve reached an exciting milestone with PlayStation 5, as weā€™re starting to ship our new controller in its final design to developers who are implementing its unique features into their games. But first, we wanted everyone in the PlayStation community to get a first look at the DualSenseā„¢ wireless controller, and hear our vision for how the new controller will captivate more of your senses as you interact with the virtual worlds in PS5 games. The features of DualSense, along with PS5ā€™s Tempest 3D AudioTech, will deliver a new feeling of immersion to players.

When PS4 launched in 2013, the DualShock 4 wireless controller garnered a lot of positive feedback from gamers and developers for being the best PlayStation controller yet, and for introducing forward-looking features like the Share button. This brought us to the next question ā€“ how do we build upon that success?

After thoughtful consideration, we decided to keep much of what gamers love about DualShock 4 intact, while also adding new functionality and refining the design. Based on our discussions with developers, we concluded that the sense of touch within gameplay, much like audio, hasnā€™t been a big focus for many games. We had a great opportunity with PS5 to innovate by offering game creators the ability to explore how they can heighten that feeling of immersion through our new controller. This is why we adopted haptic feedback, which adds a variety of powerful sensations youā€™ll feel when you play, such as the slow grittiness of driving a car through mud. We also incorporated adaptive triggers into the L2 and R2 buttons of DualSense so you can truly feel the tension of your actions, like when drawing a bow to shoot an arrow.

This provided us with an exciting challenge to design a new controller that builds off of the current generation, while taking into account the new features we were adding. For example, with adaptive triggers, we had to consider how the components would fit into the hardware, without giving it a bulky feeling. Our design team worked closely with our hardware engineers to place the triggers and actuators. The designers were then able to draw the lines of how the exterior of the controller would look and feel, with a challenge of making the controller feel smaller than it really looks. In the end, we changed the angle of the hand triggers and also made some subtle updates to the grip. We also took thoughtful consideration into ways to maintain a strong battery life for DualSenseā€™s rechargeable battery, and to lessen the weight of the controller as much as possible as new features were added.

For the buttons, youā€™ll notice there is no longer a ā€œShareā€ button as we had with DualShock 4. Donā€™t worry ā€“ itā€™s not going away. In fact, weā€™ve built upon the success of our industry-first Share button to bring you a new ā€œCreateā€ button feature. With Create, weā€™re once again pioneering new ways for players to create epic gameplay content to share with the world, or just to enjoy for themselves. Weā€™ll have more details on this feature as we get closer to launch.

DualSense also adds a built-in microphone array, which will enable players to easily chat with friends without a headset ā€“ ideal for jumping into a quick conversation. But of course, if you are planning to chat for a longer period, itā€™s good to have that headset handy.

Now, letā€™s talk about the colors. Traditionally our base controllers have a single color. As you can see, we went a different direction this time around, and decided on a two-toned design. Additionally, we changed the position of the light bar that will give it an extra pop. On DualShock 4, it sat on the top of the controller; now it sits at each side of the touch pad, giving it a slightly larger look and feel.

In all, we went through several concepts and hundreds of mockups over the last few years before we settled on this final design. DualSense has been tested by a wide range of gamers with a variety of hand sizes, in order for us to achieve the comfort level we wanted, with great ergonomics. Our goal with DualSense is to give gamers the feeling of being transported into the game world as soon as they open the box. We want gamers to feel like the controller is an extension of themselves when theyā€™re playing ā€“ so much so that they forget that itā€™s even in their hands!

We are thrilled about sharing the final look of the DualSense controller with our fans, and we canā€™t wait for everyone to get their hands on it! Iā€™d like to close with a message from SIE President & CEO Jim Ryan to the community:

ā€œDualSense marks a radical departure from our previous controller offerings and captures just how strongly we feel about making a generational leap with PS5. The new controller, along with the many innovative features in PS5, will be transformative for games ā€“ continuing our mission at PlayStation to push the boundaries of play, now and in the future. To the PlayStation community, I truly want to thank you for sharing this exciting journey with us as we head toward PS5ā€™s launch in Holiday 2020. We look forward to sharing more information about PS5, including the console design, in the coming months.ā€

  • No no no no no, pleaSe say it isn’t so, it can’t be, it just can’t be, šŸ˜„

  • wow wow oh god ich kann nicht mehr warten

die kontrolle kommt bestimmt aus sci-fi film

  • Is that a Vita style D-pad?

  • Ps5 Black & White confirmed?

  • I was hopping until last moment that it would have touching screen.

  • Is this compatible with the PS Back Button? If not, does Sony plan on releasing a compatible version at launch? It would be a huge step backwards to not support it for the PS5.

  • Any paddles ?and I hope it doesn’t drift.

  • TakeTheRisk_Ewol

Itā€™s a No for mee But hey who am I šŸ˜šŸ‘ŽšŸæ..

  • What a coincidence that they don’t show us the back… hmmm…

  • Looks amazing! 2 things though:
    1. Why still with the touchpad…
    2. Was hoping for back triggers in the base controller, hopefully the attachment for the dualshock 4 still works.

  • I WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT THAT CONTROLLER. sorry NEED

  • It is a real design crap, I do not know who is in charge of their designs, but I hope that they will be fired, not stingy and invest in good designers, since it even seems that they ran out of ideas and want to copy the Xbox controller, what a disappointment

  • WOW!… just take my money.

  • “…the DualShock 4 wireless controller garnered a lot of positive feedback from gamers and developers for being the best PlayStation controller yet…”
I’m sorry, what? The DualShock 4 is by far the worst PlayStation controller. Why is there a mousepad on it? It was used for exactly one game (Final Fantasy XIV), and even then, Start and Select would’ve done the same thing.
I take this very seriously, because DualShock 2 is essentially perfection. The d-pad is a little too loose (which was rectified in the still excellent Sixaxis/DualShock 3), but that controller is otherwise unbeatable.
I’m glad that they have plans for it, but that one line was incredibly jarring.

  • Where are the extra buttons?

  • GODOFTHUNDER555-

    A tiny request PlayStation
Could you please make that bluetooth headphones can connect without the ues of a dongle

    Ps. The controller looks AMAZING!!!!!!!!!

  • So my message was deleted because i didn’t praised the controller, great.

  • I’m torn on the look of it. Not sure if I like it or hate it. Looking forward to trying it out though in 2021 to see how it feels with haptic feedback.

  • Didn’t like the color. I hope the console comes in black.

  • It would have been nice to have had ergonomics involved and the joysticks properly placed for once so that they were not do high up pushing the thumbs back creating fatigue during prolonged game sessions. And this new immersion you speak on… is it going to ACTUALLY be utilized by devs… or forgotten and left in the dark like the ps4 controller features were… i can remember one game having the touch pad utilized as a feature or button. That was shadow warrior you could swing the sword and do special attacks via swipes and taps. And as for the controller speaker… inthink mad max had a reload sound or car sound something… thats it. So this all sounds great on paper but…probably is gonna fall through. Here’s hoping that is NOT the case and this is actually fully utilized. As for the ergonomics this looks like its gonna be bulky and hand filling like an xbox controller… not streamline and sleek like ps in known for. I think this needs to go back to the drawing board. Or at least make variations…and consider angled or sunken joysticks for the long sessions and comfort.

  • It’s okay. Not great, not bad, looks a bit bulky.

  • Looks nice, but I would really appreciate if you also make a full black one for the launch.
    If not… šŸ˜

  • Does this remote connects with ps5 AI tech and tells you back that what wrrong thing you did while playing game and how would you have improved it??? Also are you going to make PlayStation Plus membership prices little cheaper for Indian customers???

  • So smooth.. I need.

    • Quando vai sair a data de lanƧamento do PS5, presidente?
Coloca uma live para todos os canais da mĆdia.

  • Quero jogar PES no PS5.
    Gostei do controle.

  • The design and new feature set look fantastic. Really excited about Holiday 2020!

  • Really nice looking controller! Keep it up PlayStation! Really expeting more news on this bad boy!

  • Looks as generic as anything Microsoft, Amazon or Google would have released. I could identify every PS controller miles away until now, but this..
I’m sure it’s filled with the newest technology but it’s looks like you are trying to hide any and every piece of design that resembles the PS brand. Just try to spot the black piano PS icon on that black housing. Not cool.

  • This makes me believe that the ps5 will be also be white and black

  • There will be any back-buttons cause in the pics i cant see any of them : ( ?
    Besides that it’s a great model : D

  • Love that futuristic/playful design!
    Great new direction.

I’m curious what this small button under the PS button is about ;)

  • Barium_HydrOxide

    “It’s time to play”

  • As long as the tracking for PSVR still works I don’t care where you place the lightbar.
So does it still track or will we see new PSVR controllers? :)

  • B4sicallyInaComa

I just hope the grips are longer. I got these hideous chair leg cover playbudz on my controller because my pinky and ring finger hang off.

  • I hope this design has more resistance than the control of the ps4 šŸ˜šŸ˜

  • I’m Completely thrown off by it being white just means white will dirty faster then black controller would canā€™t wait to see what the ps5 would look like Iā€™m guessing itā€™s going to be white and black also maybe with a little Sony PlayStation blue in there

  • Idk rn I like the ps4 controller more. So can we still connect the controller to the ps5?

    • I hope so. Some people will not want all the “Bell and Whistles”. Plus for anyone who remembers the first gens DS4 battery are probably having flash backs right about now.

  • I’m not sure if I like it or not. Don’t knock it till you try it they say. I know I’m more fawn of the newer DS4 than the DS2/3.

  • Thank you Sony for not changing to asymmetrical sticks… they are horrible for gaming imo. :)

  • Beautiful, Elegant just like my Stormtroopers.

  • I’m not gonna lie, I’m all about this.

Really the magic lies in what we already knew about: the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers are likely still going to be the star here and rightfully so. It’s a departure from the “typical rumble” and I’m excited to see the immersion that brings. It also makes sense to depart from the DualShock name that we’ve all known and love.

However despite all this, the aesthetics are great. I like how the light bar has shifted away from the front (which sometimes resulted in some glare on TV screens) and moved it to a slicker trim around the touchpad. New icons for OPTIONS (if we’re still calling that) and CREATE are simple and easier to put in game UIs,

I will be happy to see some other color choices (such as darker toned ones), but I’m totally cool with the two-tone approach. All in all it just looks really really slick, and I’m happy that they made it look sleek, but also keep most about what we liked about the DS4.

In part it seems funny to give so much fanfare to a controller, but controllers really go down in history and bring up discussions years later about which ones people liked or didn’t. So far, so good, from the DualSense and the PS5.

  • Barium_HydrOxide

NOW IM WAITING FOR THE USER INTERFACE AND THEME PLAYSTATION šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜

    • I weirdly hope we get a choice of simple PS3 style, or PS4. I think the PSX-DVR, PSP, and PS3 had the best public sony UI. Not a fan of the PS4/Vita new wave styles. Some smart watches have done the bubble icons really well tho.

  • I love everything about it except all that white. That’s going to show grime badly

  • EW WTFšŸ¤®šŸ¤®šŸ¤®šŸ¤®. This controller looks ugly as hell and it looks like it will be hard to hold with nothing implemented for grip. If I were to play a fighting game with that controller, it would slip out of my hands and break. Absolutely terrible and the design is the ugliest thing I have ever seen in my life. Will not be buying the PS5 at launch if this is how the controller is going to be. UNACCEPTABLEšŸ˜”šŸ˜”šŸ¤®šŸ¤®

  • Barium_HydrOxide

Why not stick to tradition and name it dualshock 5 tho?šŸ¤”šŸ¤”šŸ¤”

  • everyone keeps saying it’s big but truly no one knows because just picture from a different angle. hope turn off mic for the controller on ps5 settings.

  • It has BEGUN!!!!!! Can’t wait for the holidays!

    • I wish they’d make the controllers available to the PS4, and PC crowds. That way we didn’t all have to fight for one all at once. Weirdly only reason I got a PS4 was using DS4 on the PC….now we have 3 consoles in the house hold. 2 slims, and a pro…. All because of one controller. It’s soon enough I suppose.
