Introducing DualSense, the New Wireless Game Controller for PlayStation 5

See the first images of DualSense, which will bring the sense of touch to PS5 gameplay.

We’ve reached an exciting milestone with PlayStation 5, as we’re starting to ship our new controller in its final design to developers who are implementing its unique features into their games. But first, we wanted everyone in the PlayStation community to get a first look at the DualSense™ wireless controller, and hear our vision for how the new controller will captivate more of your senses as you interact with the virtual worlds in PS5 games. The features of DualSense, along with PS5’s Tempest 3D AudioTech, will deliver a new feeling of immersion to players.

When PS4 launched in 2013, the DualShock 4 wireless controller garnered a lot of positive feedback from gamers and developers for being the best PlayStation controller yet, and for introducing forward-looking features like the Share button. This brought us to the next question – how do we build upon that success?

After thoughtful consideration, we decided to keep much of what gamers love about DualShock 4 intact, while also adding new functionality and refining the design. Based on our discussions with developers, we concluded that the sense of touch within gameplay, much like audio, hasn’t been a big focus for many games. We had a great opportunity with PS5 to innovate by offering game creators the ability to explore how they can heighten that feeling of immersion through our new controller. This is why we adopted haptic feedback, which adds a variety of powerful sensations you’ll feel when you play, such as the slow grittiness of driving a car through mud. We also incorporated adaptive triggers into the L2 and R2 buttons of DualSense so you can truly feel the tension of your actions, like when drawing a bow to shoot an arrow.

This provided us with an exciting challenge to design a new controller that builds off of the current generation, while taking into account the new features we were adding. For example, with adaptive triggers, we had to consider how the components would fit into the hardware, without giving it a bulky feeling. Our design team worked closely with our hardware engineers to place the triggers and actuators. The designers were then able to draw the lines of how the exterior of the controller would look and feel, with a challenge of making the controller feel smaller than it really looks. In the end, we changed the angle of the hand triggers and also made some subtle updates to the grip. We also took thoughtful consideration into ways to maintain a strong battery life for DualSense’s rechargeable battery, and to lessen the weight of the controller as much as possible as new features were added.

For the buttons, you’ll notice there is no longer a “Share” button as we had with DualShock 4. Don’t worry – it’s not going away. In fact, we’ve built upon the success of our industry-first Share button to bring you a new “Create” button feature. With Create, we’re once again pioneering new ways for players to create epic gameplay content to share with the world, or just to enjoy for themselves. We’ll have more details on this feature as we get closer to launch.

DualSense also adds a built-in microphone array, which will enable players to easily chat with friends without a headset – ideal for jumping into a quick conversation. But of course, if you are planning to chat for a longer period, it’s good to have that headset handy.

Now, let’s talk about the colors. Traditionally our base controllers have a single color. As you can see, we went a different direction this time around, and decided on a two-toned design. Additionally, we changed the position of the light bar that will give it an extra pop. On DualShock 4, it sat on the top of the controller; now it sits at each side of the touch pad, giving it a slightly larger look and feel.

In all, we went through several concepts and hundreds of mockups over the last few years before we settled on this final design. DualSense has been tested by a wide range of gamers with a variety of hand sizes, in order for us to achieve the comfort level we wanted, with great ergonomics. Our goal with DualSense is to give gamers the feeling of being transported into the game world as soon as they open the box. We want gamers to feel like the controller is an extension of themselves when they’re playing – so much so that they forget that it’s even in their hands!

We are thrilled about sharing the final look of the DualSense controller with our fans, and we can’t wait for everyone to get their hands on it! I’d like to close with a message from SIE President & CEO Jim Ryan to the community:

“DualSense marks a radical departure from our previous controller offerings and captures just how strongly we feel about making a generational leap with PS5. The new controller, along with the many innovative features in PS5, will be transformative for games – continuing our mission at PlayStation to push the boundaries of play, now and in the future. To the PlayStation community, I truly want to thank you for sharing this exciting journey with us as we head toward PS5’s launch in Holiday 2020. We look forward to sharing more information about PS5, including the console design, in the coming months.”

  • Futuristic! Expecting to test out that haptic feedback.

  • I absolutely HATE we’re losing the colored face buttons. They were as important as the shapes themselves we’ve had since 1995. They also make reading the button prompts easier to the eye. I absolutely hate it.

    • I completely agree. SFC controller was one of the first main streams to do it so well, and make it look so cool. It weirdly breathed fresh air into gaming…..that did not last

  • Barium_HydrOxide

Oh my god imagine playing horizon zero dawn 2 with this

  • I really like the design But you could have added your colors to the four buttons to the right, (blue cross, green triangle, orange/red circle, pink/purple square). That would have been great, that’s something that signature for the ps controller.

  • My question is did they get rid of the audio jack? Alot of our decked out headsets use an audio jack which was incredibly nice to have on the DS 4 but I cannot tell here. It’s not the end of the world if it doesn’t just curious?

    • I think they will provide us with a Bluetooth headset now

    • I can just about make it out at the bottom of the controller with a mic mute button above it

    • Zombie_DA_kill19

no, it’s still there just look underneath the PlayStation logo between the two handles where you can see a microphone with some sort of line between it, like its crossed out or something idk but i hope this helps… if not well at least i try too

  • If I can make a suggestion please make the PS Logo glow in the controller and it would be perfect

  • I like the design hopefully the rubber on the joysticks doesnt disintegrate like on ps4.

  • Exciting news! I’m definitely looking forward to more reveals. I can’t say that I’m fond of the color choice, but perhaps it pairs well with the console itself.

  • Why not get rid of the useless touchpad? No one was using that anyway, not even your own games. Also the whole thing looks like a weird mishmash of the DS4, an X1 pad and a ‘futuristic’ toy out of a 70s scifi show, very tacky and outdated, hate the color scheme and those lightbars, let us turn them off this time and not just dim ’em. Worst of all though it seems those L2/R2 triggers are still tiny and uncomfortable, hard to get a comfortable grip. Well, worstworstworst of all are ofc the symmetrical analog sticks but that was to be expected.

  • All the way in! Especially if they eventually add a blue or purple variant.

  • Barium_HydrOxide

Well the colours is the only thing that lacks this controller plzzzzz add colours to the shapes sony it’s a trademark and I absolutely love it

  • Make it thinner and smaller plzzzz

  • To be honest it really dose look bad it looks like a rip off of a Xbox controller.

An too the people who say it looks good don’t lie because we all know that’s not true. 😋

  • I’m not gonna love anything til this Controller and PS5 come out…mind u, ps4 has not been used to it’s full compatibility!!! But I’m looking to buy because ima fan of Playstation gaming right along with the comfort of the remote!!! But whether I buy on launch or wait a yr is on what came out with it and whether they got their servers ready for the masses…we are going thru a pandemic…be able to serve the masses online if this bs ain’t gone by then…the masses that’s still here!!!!

  • I love it. This gamepad is wonderful! Nice job, Sony!

  • Se ve muy bueno, espero comprarlo en su preventa Uwu

  • I will buY Ps5 on the launch date.Lets gooo

  • YES! And I want to know so much more about the “haptic feature”.

  • So this looks like it won’t be usable on PSVR games for PS4…

  • What kind of port is that on the back?

  • The controller is great😍😍😍😍😍 beautiful

  • Nice. I really hope they also include the back button in the new controller that was released this year for the DS4 controller as an attachment.

  • Hideous beyond all reason. I hate almost everything about it visually other than the placement of the lights which I’m happy to have return, just hope we can pick the default color like we can on Steam with the DS4…

And I hope you didn’t cheap out on the analog stick material like the launch DS4s that fell apart with general use. I’m still afraid to play any PS4 game without attachments to the analogs in fear they fall apart again. Even the new controllers. ._.

  • Yuck, this is just so gross. Love the classic DS1-4 design, but this looks like a cheaply made 3rd-party knock-off. 2-tone colorway is disgusting and nothing about this matches with Sony’s consistently beautiful design language found in all their products over the years. I’ve been a diehard Sony/PS fan for decades, but PS5 hardware has been nothing but a series of massive disappointments so far =(

  • well it was a good run with the PS1 to PS4, sad to see you’re now copying the worst traits of the competitions poorly designed controller

Looks okay in the first image with the straight on front shot (except for the useless Share button being replaced by what will be an equally useless Create button), but further down the poor design is showed off with the side shot where the edges of the controller curve, the face buttons and d-pad are no longer on a flat plane (as they should be) and now just part of the curve of the controller. Truly awful design.

  • I also wanna see the inside of the remote an the PlayStation emblem on the middle of the remote looks dumb

  • I hope it gets released full black or full something, because this color is ugly

  • Nice. And what about latency? Moved to WiFi or still Bluetooth?

  • I like the clear d pad buttons 🤤

  • Looks good.

Read a good idea online, if the shape buttons could light up in their respective colour when pressed, would be ace👌

  • If this controller does not have a *PHYSICAL* switch to disconnect/turn off the built-in microphone, I will refuse to use it and hope there are alternatives available.

In this day and age of data breaches and data collection, a un-checkable microphone is a no-go.

  • The controller would look nicer in an all black color scheme. Also, since you’re planning on releasing a new generation of consoles can you allow for external assets to be used on the PS4?

  • No Touchscreen like an Iphone , no Backbuttons,no PS home Button or hopefully you can just touch the logo ? feels like a let down to me thank god my PS4 controller with the great back button attachment

  • Headphone jack is really the only thing I’m interested in. I can’t get any audio set up and being able to use headphones with my DS4 is godsend.

  • I hope this comes in Cheeto orange! Looks amazing

  • that controller looks big and bulky… if I wanted that Id get an xbox >.>

  • Cool désigne I like it good job congrats to design and engineering teams, can’t wait to hold it.

  • No back buttons? Maybe another attachment?
That’s been a game changer to me on the PS4

  • im not hapoy about this, looks very like an xbox controller so this is the only option? I hope you can use the PS4 V2 controller with the ps5 its way nicer than this crap, the console better look alot nicer. Its sickens me to ever even put ps4 and xbox in the same sentence.

  • Cool design I like it good job congrats to design and engineering teams, can’t wait to hold it.

  • I’m excited. Looks amazing. But, bares a striking resemblance to the other console’s controller. Losing the iconic Playstation controller look is a little disappointing.

  • Looks great, I’d like if we could get more colours. Personally I like the plain black controllers but I wouldn’t mind if they just flipped the black and white.

  • No 3.5 jack for my headphones? It was my favorite DS4 feature to play or watch Netflix at night.

    • More questions:
-Is its latency better than the DS4?
-What type of Bluetooth or wifi uses?

    • Another ones:
-Are you able to totally switch off the light in PS5? To play or watch Netflix at night was a pain in the ass in PS4, and also would be nice to save battery.
-How many hours lasts that batery? Please tell me at least 2X the DS4 battery time.
      -How about the charging time?

  • An Xbox controller, nice… So original

  • Look amazing can not wait

  • The controller is so beautiful 😍😍😍😍 but ps4 is way more beautiful than the ps5. I think PS4😎 and PS5😎will be a bit the same and i hope this time the ps4 controller can work in the PS5😎 and the PS5😎 controller can work in the PS4😎

  • Please tell me this comes in different colors???? Please tell me this will have paddles on the back??? Don’t do this to me PlayStation! I’ve been loyal my whole life!

  • I absolutely hate the white color, I’m a HUGE fan of classic black. please let there be color options come release! 😒

  • I like this

  • I am soo ready…I hope they also add a PC receiver so we can use it on our computers also.
