Introducing DualSense, the New Wireless Game Controller for PlayStation 5

See the first images of DualSense, which will bring the sense of touch to PS5 gameplay.

We’ve reached an exciting milestone with PlayStation 5, as we’re starting to ship our new controller in its final design to developers who are implementing its unique features into their games. But first, we wanted everyone in the PlayStation community to get a first look at the DualSense™ wireless controller, and hear our vision for how the new controller will captivate more of your senses as you interact with the virtual worlds in PS5 games. The features of DualSense, along with PS5’s Tempest 3D AudioTech, will deliver a new feeling of immersion to players.

When PS4 launched in 2013, the DualShock 4 wireless controller garnered a lot of positive feedback from gamers and developers for being the best PlayStation controller yet, and for introducing forward-looking features like the Share button. This brought us to the next question – how do we build upon that success?

After thoughtful consideration, we decided to keep much of what gamers love about DualShock 4 intact, while also adding new functionality and refining the design. Based on our discussions with developers, we concluded that the sense of touch within gameplay, much like audio, hasn’t been a big focus for many games. We had a great opportunity with PS5 to innovate by offering game creators the ability to explore how they can heighten that feeling of immersion through our new controller. This is why we adopted haptic feedback, which adds a variety of powerful sensations you’ll feel when you play, such as the slow grittiness of driving a car through mud. We also incorporated adaptive triggers into the L2 and R2 buttons of DualSense so you can truly feel the tension of your actions, like when drawing a bow to shoot an arrow.

This provided us with an exciting challenge to design a new controller that builds off of the current generation, while taking into account the new features we were adding. For example, with adaptive triggers, we had to consider how the components would fit into the hardware, without giving it a bulky feeling. Our design team worked closely with our hardware engineers to place the triggers and actuators. The designers were then able to draw the lines of how the exterior of the controller would look and feel, with a challenge of making the controller feel smaller than it really looks. In the end, we changed the angle of the hand triggers and also made some subtle updates to the grip. We also took thoughtful consideration into ways to maintain a strong battery life for DualSense’s rechargeable battery, and to lessen the weight of the controller as much as possible as new features were added.

For the buttons, you’ll notice there is no longer a “Share” button as we had with DualShock 4. Don’t worry – it’s not going away. In fact, we’ve built upon the success of our industry-first Share button to bring you a new “Create” button feature. With Create, we’re once again pioneering new ways for players to create epic gameplay content to share with the world, or just to enjoy for themselves. We’ll have more details on this feature as we get closer to launch.

DualSense also adds a built-in microphone array, which will enable players to easily chat with friends without a headset – ideal for jumping into a quick conversation. But of course, if you are planning to chat for a longer period, it’s good to have that headset handy.

Now, let’s talk about the colors. Traditionally our base controllers have a single color. As you can see, we went a different direction this time around, and decided on a two-toned design. Additionally, we changed the position of the light bar that will give it an extra pop. On DualShock 4, it sat on the top of the controller; now it sits at each side of the touch pad, giving it a slightly larger look and feel.

In all, we went through several concepts and hundreds of mockups over the last few years before we settled on this final design. DualSense has been tested by a wide range of gamers with a variety of hand sizes, in order for us to achieve the comfort level we wanted, with great ergonomics. Our goal with DualSense is to give gamers the feeling of being transported into the game world as soon as they open the box. We want gamers to feel like the controller is an extension of themselves when they’re playing – so much so that they forget that it’s even in their hands!

We are thrilled about sharing the final look of the DualSense controller with our fans, and we can’t wait for everyone to get their hands on it! I’d like to close with a message from SIE President & CEO Jim Ryan to the community:

“DualSense marks a radical departure from our previous controller offerings and captures just how strongly we feel about making a generational leap with PS5. The new controller, along with the many innovative features in PS5, will be transformative for games – continuing our mission at PlayStation to push the boundaries of play, now and in the future. To the PlayStation community, I truly want to thank you for sharing this exciting journey with us as we head toward PS5’s launch in Holiday 2020. We look forward to sharing more information about PS5, including the console design, in the coming months.”

  • I like it, a lot. But I would like to know more about its functionality, like the middle pad or other new things you added or changed.

  • Looks Dope !

  • Sony, if the algorithm is reading this:

This is cool, and I even see more understated improvements (USB-C, I see you). But PLEASE. For the sake of market penetration:

    1. Design/update the back button attachment you made for DS4 for DS5 (USB-C?)

    2. MAKE MORE OF THE PS4 BACK BUTTONS, THEY’RE SCALPING OUT HERE

    3. 35mm adaptability if it’s not already a feature. Proprietary is useless, but do like Samsung and ship with USB-C earbuds if you REALLY want to make Microsoft sweat.

    4. Adjustable/modular triggers and first party ergonomic/extended replacements over time.

    5. Grip. Sweaty Hands.

    6. Eroding thumbsticks suck. Sticking thumbsticks suck. Friction test them like race car wheels. Buy a belt sander if you must.

    7. Seamless touch menu navigation and audio control from the pad. Swipe functionality for UX/UI integration and layout design.

    8. Actual, quality first party controller accessories. Y’all letting other companies eat your food.

    9. Whatever hyper polished glass MacBooks use, spring for that and I’ll pay premium.

    10. Elite controllers if you refuse to let adjustable trigger stops be a hard-built, or first party modular, system.

Just product advise from a fan and enthusiast.

    Can’t wait.

  • So no back buttons? and it doesnt seem like the back attachment for DS4 fits here as there is now a mute button which seem to get in the way

  • Love it but wat if the pad was a screen Still a beautiful peice sony I LOVE YALL 💯

  • Looks AWESOME – but-I-NEED-to-know: 1. What about Back Buttons? 2. Will the DS4’s Back Button Attachment work with a Dual Sense Controller? 3. Or will there be a Dual Sense Controller Back Button Attachment? Let me(us) know Please – So I Can Order One With My PS5 – Thanks… XD

  • Ok, I found something to complain about: where are the color-coded symbols for the buttons?!

  • P.S. in the name of reducing waste, I’m tired of burning through controllers. See what can be done for actually getting replacement service depending on the SRP

  • There is no proper lightbar or mention of motion controls. So, this controller will not support VR?

  • This controller design embodies everything Sony is doing with the PS5. It’s a new direction.

  • Well, i guess there are millions of gamers that also play pc games, because one of the main reason for me to stay with ps was no bulky controllers. I’ll have to check but if it is look like gaming is over for me.

  • Paddles, triggers or buttons on the back please 🙏🏻

  • Honestly. Not my cup of tea. The two tone thing is not to my liking and I want the. /\ [ ] O X in their classic colours. I’d say most of the users I know didn’t like the light bar. As accents maybe, but we all can omit the accent for more battery life. The see through buttons? Let’s say…they won’t age well, believe me. I know the design paradigm is „don’t give them what they want, because they won’t like it. Give them something they didn’t know they want“. Please please rethink it. We want a controller that can take a beating, hours and hours of gaming, something solid in our hands, a piece that doesn’t look dirty after a few hours. I’d know, I imported the white PS3 DS3 from japan. Once a month or very two months I would have to clean it excessively. White might look classy but black looks classic, remember that.

  • We need a 360 view xD but seriously I cant see if it comes with a attachment input to add backpedals like the dual shock 4 and I want to see the bottom

  • I’m sure it will be an okay controller (material looks just as cheap as the DS4), but the design looks awful. And you’re doubling down on touch after almost no game used the touchpad in any meaningful way? Wrong choice.

  • say_itz_ASH_bruh

Looks awesome ! My one question would be are the analogs going to be more durable than the 4’s ?

  • Love the design and look of the new PS5 controller, now let’s have a full console reveal please!

  • Its for sure not what I was expecting but I like it

  • GamerOnWheelz214

Idk if they did or not but I hope that they made the controller accessible for gamers who are disabled because I have a hard time sometimes pressing the L3 & R3 (sticks) so I hope they really considered disabled gamers when making the new controller.. love the design.

  • CaptinCrunch1992

At first I didn’t like the design but it’s growing on me and I hope they have other variations as I think a darker color would be easier on the eyes. Excited to see what we’ll see next!

  • whoa super la manette juste magnifique

  • That looks grotesque. There needs to be a black option.

  • Ummm no camera? How is this going to work with VR?

  • i hope it will offer different color options but cool

  • YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEW!

  • YES!

  • One big question as a fan for many years and loyal. where do I sign the divorce papers from PlayStation? <- its joke btw. XD Love the new design overall. Hope battery life is least 30 hours max. How much will it cost? $60 I Want color blue and will it work for PC as well for remote play?

  • no, it looks rlly ugly, the USB-C is nice but the Controller looks really big and fat…

  • Does it come in black?

  • Please please tell me there’s gonna be a black version cos that’s ghastly!!

  • Amazing design! Loving it!

  • science-fiction_

    Sieht stark aus

  • This is nice! The built in mic is a great idea. The haptic feedback awesome. Why can’t we see the bottom? Will there be paddles? I want more information.

  • The light bar on the ds4 had a purpose, though. To track the controller with the camera. I’m guessing this feature is going away moving forward. Why put battery draining lights in the controller at all? It looks interesting but if it doesn’t feel as good in hand as the ds4, I don’t know if I’ll like it.

  • No back buttons huh? Still looks elegant, Love it

  • Weird look, but if the Gamepad is smaller than it looks it might be okay. Please, give us the option to disable the lightbars! Blue lights are terrible. Especially on a Gamepad.

  • Is anyone else getting this huge Star Trek feel from this? Gorgeous, definitely,

  • It looks amazing, if only the white was the grey classic PS1 colour. That would make it even more amazing.

  • Will I be able to put this controller down without hitting the triggers?

    • I don’t understand why they switched to triggers in the first place, and I totally agree with this.

  • Dear Sony,

For the next PS3 update (4.87), besides adding support to this controller, discard the module checking (BT/WiFi/Blu-ray drive) to prevent consoles from bricking.
It has always been a pointless feature, but even more now that you no longer offer repair services to this platform.

    Best regards.

  • Can you put back paddles?

  • It looks awesome. Hope to get more info on ps5 soon. Kepp up the good work

  • Wow this looks horrible, I can not believe this is the PS5 controller. What a disappointment Sony. The PS4 controller was bad enough, now we have this xbox looking controller?? Get out of here… Bring back the real original DualShock back.

  • YOOO, This low key fireee. Now let’s wait for the ps5 Beauty to come out!. I feel like the ps5 probably come out white and black sense the controler is wite and black.

  • What type of USB is it??

  • So far I like the design alot even the two tones even though I kinda want the black and the white tones to switch places. The bumper triggers would look alot better white with the joysticks remaining as is. Also would of loved to see the original logo colors for the playstation on the controller instead of just the blacked out logo.

  • Please, please, please use higher quality internals for your analog sticks than the ones found in DualShock 4s. I’ve had so many issues with DS4 analog sticks (deadzone issues that make my characters move without any inputs, blind spots on certain directions so my characters can run in all directions but sometimes walk when fully tilted to the right etc.) I’ve purchased brand new DS4’s that have faults out of the box. My current DS4 is one I had to return using your support page, and it works fine, I just hope it lasts until PS5 comes out.

  • Sony, so there’s no back buttons? Are you planning to sell another 50 dollar **** again ?

  • Where are the extra buttons? WTF Sony?
