Introducing DualSense, the New Wireless Game Controller for PlayStation 5

See the first images of DualSense, which will bring the sense of touch to PS5 gameplay.

Weā€™ve reached an exciting milestone with PlayStation 5, as weā€™re starting to ship our new controller in its final design to developers who are implementing its unique features into their games. But first, we wanted everyone in the PlayStation community to get a first look at the DualSenseā„¢ wireless controller, and hear our vision for how the new controller will captivate more of your senses as you interact with the virtual worlds in PS5 games. The features of DualSense, along with PS5ā€™s Tempest 3D AudioTech, will deliver a new feeling of immersion to players.

When PS4 launched in 2013, the DualShock 4 wireless controller garnered a lot of positive feedback from gamers and developers for being the best PlayStation controller yet, and for introducing forward-looking features like the Share button. This brought us to the next question ā€“ how do we build upon that success?

After thoughtful consideration, we decided to keep much of what gamers love about DualShock 4 intact, while also adding new functionality and refining the design. Based on our discussions with developers, we concluded that the sense of touch within gameplay, much like audio, hasnā€™t been a big focus for many games. We had a great opportunity with PS5 to innovate by offering game creators the ability to explore how they can heighten that feeling of immersion through our new controller. This is why we adopted haptic feedback, which adds a variety of powerful sensations youā€™ll feel when you play, such as the slow grittiness of driving a car through mud. We also incorporated adaptive triggers into the L2 and R2 buttons of DualSense so you can truly feel the tension of your actions, like when drawing a bow to shoot an arrow.

This provided us with an exciting challenge to design a new controller that builds off of the current generation, while taking into account the new features we were adding. For example, with adaptive triggers, we had to consider how the components would fit into the hardware, without giving it a bulky feeling. Our design team worked closely with our hardware engineers to place the triggers and actuators. The designers were then able to draw the lines of how the exterior of the controller would look and feel, with a challenge of making the controller feel smaller than it really looks. In the end, we changed the angle of the hand triggers and also made some subtle updates to the grip. We also took thoughtful consideration into ways to maintain a strong battery life for DualSenseā€™s rechargeable battery, and to lessen the weight of the controller as much as possible as new features were added.

For the buttons, youā€™ll notice there is no longer a ā€œShareā€ button as we had with DualShock 4. Donā€™t worry ā€“ itā€™s not going away. In fact, weā€™ve built upon the success of our industry-first Share button to bring you a new ā€œCreateā€ button feature. With Create, weā€™re once again pioneering new ways for players to create epic gameplay content to share with the world, or just to enjoy for themselves. Weā€™ll have more details on this feature as we get closer to launch.

DualSense also adds a built-in microphone array, which will enable players to easily chat with friends without a headset ā€“ ideal for jumping into a quick conversation. But of course, if you are planning to chat for a longer period, itā€™s good to have that headset handy.

Now, letā€™s talk about the colors. Traditionally our base controllers have a single color. As you can see, we went a different direction this time around, and decided on a two-toned design. Additionally, we changed the position of the light bar that will give it an extra pop. On DualShock 4, it sat on the top of the controller; now it sits at each side of the touch pad, giving it a slightly larger look and feel.

In all, we went through several concepts and hundreds of mockups over the last few years before we settled on this final design. DualSense has been tested by a wide range of gamers with a variety of hand sizes, in order for us to achieve the comfort level we wanted, with great ergonomics. Our goal with DualSense is to give gamers the feeling of being transported into the game world as soon as they open the box. We want gamers to feel like the controller is an extension of themselves when theyā€™re playing ā€“ so much so that they forget that itā€™s even in their hands!

We are thrilled about sharing the final look of the DualSense controller with our fans, and we canā€™t wait for everyone to get their hands on it! Iā€™d like to close with a message from SIE President & CEO Jim Ryan to the community:

ā€œDualSense marks a radical departure from our previous controller offerings and captures just how strongly we feel about making a generational leap with PS5. The new controller, along with the many innovative features in PS5, will be transformative for games ā€“ continuing our mission at PlayStation to push the boundaries of play, now and in the future. To the PlayStation community, I truly want to thank you for sharing this exciting journey with us as we head toward PS5ā€™s launch in Holiday 2020. We look forward to sharing more information about PS5, including the console design, in the coming months.ā€

  • I like the color scheme of the two tone design. Hopefully the lack of a mention of a heartbeat sensor means that technology isn’t included.

  • I hope they have Wireless charging, how easy would that be?

  • I donā€™t see any back paddles.

And the controller looks kinda bulky/thicc. The dpad seems to have gotten smaller and are there going to be trigger stops for rapid fire? Oh and yeah u finally switched to USB-C which I love.

  • So i just got myself a PS4 not so long ago. The console and dualshock 4 design had satisfied me alot as I didn’t know much about the modern consoles and controllers nowadays as Xbox 360 was my last console i played before I own a PS4. But this newly looking PS5 Dualsense controller already making me to feel and sense the powerful of futuristic gaming experience. YOU GUYS ARE SO GREAT AT DESIGNING THIS NEW GENERATION CONTROLLER! Keep it up, Sony.

  • My GOD!!! Beautiful!!!

  • So u are making a xbox controller smh. Way to beat the competition become them, and please dont say this white version is the stock version that’s a terrible choice in color the color that get dirty the easiest

  • So if there’s no front facing light bar, how does it work with current gen PSVR hardware?

  • Hate the monotone multicolor and what’s up with the 1 buttons? They look huge even compared to the 2 buttons.

  • Cool.. But it gives me Xbox vibes..

  • cant wait!!

  • greatnorthcoffee

Not a fan of this design. The lack of a headphone jack is a dealbreaker for me (easily my favorite feature on the DualShock 4) and the color scheme is beyond ugly. Taking the color out of the buttons was also a really questionable choice. I hope that the DS4 will be compatible with the PS5 because otherwise I may have to consider not buying the PS5.

    • it doesnt say there is no headphone jack. it says it has build in mic so you dont need the headset “But of course, if you are planning to chat for a longer period, itā€™s good to have that headset handy.” you can apparently see the jack in the front center of the controller (right next to the mute light i think it is)

  • The design is awesome!

  • Dislikes
    1) Where is the Battery Charging dock port on the bottom? Why are we doing away with this? Best part of the DS4
    2) That battery better be easily accessible. I’ve modded every DS4 I own for a larger capacity battery, I’m pretty sure that trend is going to continue unless Sony comes to terms with the fact that their base components need to be swappable for premium ones.
    3) No rear buttons?
    4) Create vs Share… ok…. not impressed this is silly what ever.
    5) White? Are you kidding me? Not liking the two tone look.
    6) PS Button looks cheap and tacky. Please go back to the PS button of the DS4.
    7) Please give us concave analog sticks instead of the slippy bubble in a crater thing you’re doing.
    8) Microphone -I didn’t ask for this, now I have to deal with little clicky noises from the buttons and background shouting in addition to my own voice. We have hte 3.5mm jack, this wasn’t needed.
    9) analog sticks needed more space between them.
    10) classic PS Button colors are gone. Please don’t do this.

    1) Form factor is good
    2) like the new name
    3) Triggers sound great
    4) Moving the light to be a controller accent is brilliant. Just hope it doesn’t break.

    Hopefully this isn’t final.

  • If the console looks this incredible I dont mind waiting a few months

  • Brabo plsy station sobre todo originalidad para nada es parecido al de xbox

  • Very cool PS5 controller! I definitely like it a lot! The two tone color makes it stand out a lot! Very futuristic design good job Sony design team really hope the PS5’s console console also has this two tone futuristic design too. Cannot wait for more information when it gets closer to it’s release! Yay! šŸ„³šŸ‘

  • So I wonder if this controller gives us an idea about the ps5 itself, eg will the console be two tone too?

  • It looks cool but is there going to be an all-black option?

  • That looks gorgeous, cannot wait to see how the colour scheme relates to the console. Love the built in microphone.

  • Why would you remove the button collors after 25 years since playstation?!?! This is not acceptable!!

  • So, seeing that those with a current PSVR will have to also use it on the 5 at release until they put out the PSVR2 for the 5,how is that light bar going to affect the camera tracking for the controller?

  • What colors are available?

  • wish it had paddles

  • Would love to see what other color combos will be available as I’m not a huge fan of white. I do love the form though. Can’t wait to see what the console looks like as well as the price for the system and individual controllers.

  • Kinda looks like a Microsoft controller but I’m a simp for play station so I love it

  • That looks great!

  • I am excited to feel the controller just make a video on it please waiting for months for this movement šŸ¤ŖšŸ¤ŖšŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜

  • Why the big boxy design it looks good but Iā€™m going to miss the DualShock design and I hope it comes in black too

  • Iā€™m not a fan.

    • I saw a picture of it just before I saw that Sony had made an official post, and actually laughed when I saw it. It looked like one of the most obviously fake “leaks” yet. Then I saw this page…

  • this looks really cool but having a choice over a more traditional style of controler would be really nice

  • I would rather get a refrigerator

  • Encantado por lo estĆ©tico, ahora hay que probarlo! Gracias por compartir siempre primero con nosotros, jugadores.

  • Interesting, hope theres an all black one later down the line.

  • Thats disgusting. if I wanted a gamepad like in xbox I would buy an xbox.
Why change something that already works?
DualShock is one of the things that I always chose the playstation for 10+ years. Now for the first time I thought about what kind of console to take in the next generation. This is not a DualShock, this is a children’s toy like in xbox.

    • Agreed. DualShock, particularly DualShock 2, is one of the main reasons why PlayStation has been at the top since its inception. Sixaxis/DualShock 3 was still excellent, even though I have a few problems with it, and I really don’t like DualShock 4. I’m very disheartened to see this trend continue.

  • If I wanted a controller like that, Iā€™d play Xbox….. šŸ™„

  • Will it have buttons in the back for advanced gaming or to ease some functions in FPS? Or will you let that feature to be made by other controller companies?

  • She’s beautiful

  • it looks goooooddddšŸ”„šŸ”„

  • Mine Please

  • I like it, hope they do a version that has the coloured buttons though, Triangle just doesn’t look right unless it’s green!

  • Its so cute šŸ˜

  • Not a fan looks and will probably feel like an xbox controller, and this is why I alway liked playstation because of the controller…šŸ˜„šŸ˜¢šŸ˜šŸ˜¤sad days coming my friends

  • Hopefully it’s not huge and bulky like the xbox controller…

  • To be honest shouldā€™ve added paddles but nice controller

  • I hope it doesn’t have the same problems like dualshock 4 at launch (even though it got the improved version later on). Although the built-in microphone is a good thing. It looks futuristic and the colour scheme is good, makes the controller unique.

    • Microphone is a terrible idea. I don’t know why people keep asking for this. Every button press you make, every analog stick move you make, every rumble applied, will be picked up by this microphone. That isn’t even getting into the fact that its going to be pointed at your face towards the ceiling so we’ll be hearing way more than just you talking. This will give the false impression that you can use it open air which means feed back loop hell. The Mute button might help, but most gamers these days do not and will not use push to talk.

  • Bruh that ps5 controller is debatable like I like it but I don’t like its just different well like how everyone says it’s always good to try new things.

  • I love it. No additional comments. <3

  • that looks legendary!!!

  • Hurry up and release the console!

  • Wow it looks beautiful and damn it’s so different can’t wait touch it. Love the fact it has a stormtrooper color going for it.
