Introducing DualSense, the New Wireless Game Controller for PlayStation 5

See the first images of DualSense, which will bring the sense of touch to PS5 gameplay.

We’ve reached an exciting milestone with PlayStation 5, as we’re starting to ship our new controller in its final design to developers who are implementing its unique features into their games. But first, we wanted everyone in the PlayStation community to get a first look at the DualSense™ wireless controller, and hear our vision for how the new controller will captivate more of your senses as you interact with the virtual worlds in PS5 games. The features of DualSense, along with PS5’s Tempest 3D AudioTech, will deliver a new feeling of immersion to players.

When PS4 launched in 2013, the DualShock 4 wireless controller garnered a lot of positive feedback from gamers and developers for being the best PlayStation controller yet, and for introducing forward-looking features like the Share button. This brought us to the next question – how do we build upon that success?

After thoughtful consideration, we decided to keep much of what gamers love about DualShock 4 intact, while also adding new functionality and refining the design. Based on our discussions with developers, we concluded that the sense of touch within gameplay, much like audio, hasn’t been a big focus for many games. We had a great opportunity with PS5 to innovate by offering game creators the ability to explore how they can heighten that feeling of immersion through our new controller. This is why we adopted haptic feedback, which adds a variety of powerful sensations you’ll feel when you play, such as the slow grittiness of driving a car through mud. We also incorporated adaptive triggers into the L2 and R2 buttons of DualSense so you can truly feel the tension of your actions, like when drawing a bow to shoot an arrow.

This provided us with an exciting challenge to design a new controller that builds off of the current generation, while taking into account the new features we were adding. For example, with adaptive triggers, we had to consider how the components would fit into the hardware, without giving it a bulky feeling. Our design team worked closely with our hardware engineers to place the triggers and actuators. The designers were then able to draw the lines of how the exterior of the controller would look and feel, with a challenge of making the controller feel smaller than it really looks. In the end, we changed the angle of the hand triggers and also made some subtle updates to the grip. We also took thoughtful consideration into ways to maintain a strong battery life for DualSense’s rechargeable battery, and to lessen the weight of the controller as much as possible as new features were added.

For the buttons, you’ll notice there is no longer a “Share” button as we had with DualShock 4. Don’t worry – it’s not going away. In fact, we’ve built upon the success of our industry-first Share button to bring you a new “Create” button feature. With Create, we’re once again pioneering new ways for players to create epic gameplay content to share with the world, or just to enjoy for themselves. We’ll have more details on this feature as we get closer to launch.

DualSense also adds a built-in microphone array, which will enable players to easily chat with friends without a headset – ideal for jumping into a quick conversation. But of course, if you are planning to chat for a longer period, it’s good to have that headset handy.

Now, let’s talk about the colors. Traditionally our base controllers have a single color. As you can see, we went a different direction this time around, and decided on a two-toned design. Additionally, we changed the position of the light bar that will give it an extra pop. On DualShock 4, it sat on the top of the controller; now it sits at each side of the touch pad, giving it a slightly larger look and feel.

In all, we went through several concepts and hundreds of mockups over the last few years before we settled on this final design. DualSense has been tested by a wide range of gamers with a variety of hand sizes, in order for us to achieve the comfort level we wanted, with great ergonomics. Our goal with DualSense is to give gamers the feeling of being transported into the game world as soon as they open the box. We want gamers to feel like the controller is an extension of themselves when they’re playing – so much so that they forget that it’s even in their hands!

We are thrilled about sharing the final look of the DualSense controller with our fans, and we can’t wait for everyone to get their hands on it! I’d like to close with a message from SIE President & CEO Jim Ryan to the community:

“DualSense marks a radical departure from our previous controller offerings and captures just how strongly we feel about making a generational leap with PS5. The new controller, along with the many innovative features in PS5, will be transformative for games – continuing our mission at PlayStation to push the boundaries of play, now and in the future. To the PlayStation community, I truly want to thank you for sharing this exciting journey with us as we head toward PS5’s launch in Holiday 2020. We look forward to sharing more information about PS5, including the console design, in the coming months.”

  • I really do like this design please have a design for the ps5 to match I think it would look great also is there any confirmed overheating problems to the PS5?

  • The main part im not liking is the curve on top of the controller, towards the triggers, i like the flat shape on all previous controllers.
    Please fix this major issue.

  • I don’t like it. The shape doesn’t look as comfortable as older generations. Show us more pictures please of the back and inside grip. On pc I went from using the an Xbox controller to using a PS4 controller because the grip wasn’t as good as PlayStation controllers and it began hurting my hands. The PlayStation controller is one big reason I want to stay with PlayStation but if you are aiming to make it close to Xbox controllers you are asking to trade fans. It would be nice ask us fans what we want in a controller.

  • Now I think we will have a white console at launch, I am still wandering about back buttons, and I wander, even more, if I will be able to get a back button for my actual ds4
This dualsense, looks pretty neat, can’t wait to take it for a test drive : )

  • It would have been nice if it came with the 2 back buttons instead of having to buy an adapter..

  • I like the design, it looks futuristic. If we can get it in different colors that would be awesome.

  • Yo pls add extra back paddles like scuf

  • Cool design,

However very worried about the buttons, i dont want to accidentally press a wrong button with playing, it would be cool if the symbols could light up along with the trackpad, and it would be pretty cool if we could manage the controller brightness, it would be handy for dark spaces since not much light is needed just enough to see where the buttons are and all.

overall great but could use more work on the symbols in my opinion

  • No backbuttons or anything? So will the late backbuttons that you made will it also work? Like if you add those backbuttons with this new controller it will look ugly and bulky as ****

  • Ok, so its safe o say the Playstation is also a 2 tone color possibility? And probably majority on it is..white.

  • Looks very comfortable. Thats what matters the most to me.

  • Please make them either all black or all white. The clash doesn’t really work for me. Also, can you release an edition that’s more traditional? I’m not really looking forward to that re-design

  • Best controller design I seen in awhile that’s official and not third party. The color sets the perfect tone for the PS5 as it’s trying to advance the future of gaming technical and creatively. Also For people talking about battery life there are these devices called power banks which are very portable. I can’t wait to see what the console looks like.

  • It’s really beautiful indeed!! It has a very smooth looking design and the colors fit so perfect as they are!! White is a great choice but I really hope there’s another “color set” for both Console and DualSense… Like Black controller with red lines!!

  • Looks nice and the upgrades sound good. Surprised you’re still going with the giant touchpad button though considering how little used that touchpad ended up being except as another standard button.

  • I hope they add custome colours were we get to customize the colors on our controller if we order online

  • All that I want was removable batteries Sony. This controller sucks

    • Ew. I don’t want to shove AAs or buy plug n play kits that always BREAK. Screw Xbox’s greedy methods i dropped Xbox controllers after 360. No thanks. I have long USBs and multiple controllers i’m good on charge. Internal all the way.

    • What is this 2002? Lol

  • The controller looks great but I’ve heard there might be built-in back buttons, and that would be a great thing to add especially because claw is a useful way to hold a controller, instead of practicing claw people can easily do more multitasking in games with back buttons. I know we can by back buttons from PlayStation, but having them already in the controller will surely give it a more steady feel and people can do things without moving their thumb with both back buttons, and I think it would also be a good way to outdo competition with Luther consoles (you know what I mean) but anyway, I think it would just be a great addition, thank you!

  • Hope the light bar beside those button won’t blind us when we play in the dark.
Make the analog more rough so that the analogy won’t become slippery after some weeks.
Hope the function buttons on top of the dualsense will be easier to reach when the game become intense.
Finally, bring out different colors; I’m a sucker for red, black and purple.

  • Are you planning on keeping the iconic colours for the buttons (ie. Square, Circle, Triangle and Cross)? It looks a bit bare with the whole controller looking just white and grey?

  • People are over here complaining about the joysticks. I personally loved the Dualshock4 joysticks, so I’m really excited to see how the next ones feel.

  • Excited/scared to try the new controller as a disabled gamer. Absolutely gutted with the decision to have the controller white and no colour on the face buttons. I really dislike white electronics for showing dirt. Please, add a darker alternative for launch

  • Looks very nice. Can’t wait

  • Looks awesome! Well done! By the way can we say other photos angles? As we want to see the back, below etc…?? Thanks

  • It’s a fresh look BUT!!! The curved looks of controller is great but the colour tone is somehow not so appealing. The white has its drawbacks – it become pale after 1 yr use and looks ugly with dust and sweat, already seen in Xbox 360 controllers. Trackpad is somehow not needed as 90% games don’t use it the way its been designed only used by Sony’s in-house game development studios by Naughty Games and Santa Monica Studio. Joystick texture feel is much better on Xbox controllers than PS. I have to put a rubber skin on top on for those unmet needs.

  • It look amazing and beautiful, I had and have psone PS3 ps4 but I only buy ps5 that no exclusive PlayStation release for pc or Xbox .

  • It looks good, and looks to have a more refined shape of the PS4, but it’s a shame that you kept the Share… uhhh…. Create… button and touch pad. Those are features not everybody need. Using the trackpad as a Select button just feels like a waste of effort.

  • am so hyped this look so good it looks like the Xbox one pad but that doesn’t matter because it’s bigger and it’s 100% going to be easier to hold and more comfortable for people with big hands :) put one improvement is make it just one colour so like one black one white not mixed I think that looks ugly either way good work :)

  • I love it can’t wait to try it out.

  • will there be a built in mic or still the same with all the playstation in which you have to plug in a headset or earphones?

  • Amazing reveal and great details. Looking forward to using this!

  • Need it but I’m broke 😭

  • Sony makes gorgeous hardware unlike any other console developer. This design is stunning and the features are incredible. PS5 is going to dominate next gen and i’m there day 1. Ride or die PlayStation.

  • Ahhhh .. I confirmed you Sony you already win controller war … Thanks …

We hope you also win Console war too. INSHALLAH ❤️ LOVE FROM PAKISTAN

  • I love it.

  • Amazing design and worked with dul5 controller .. I very much like it.

  • Wow!!!!You guys at playstation always nail it man!!! Love the design❤️❤️
    Looks so sick!!!

  • Looks really cool and futuristic, I hope that dpad is as good as psvita dpad 😃

  • Even the name sounds nice DualSense

  • Will there be other colors stock? And if so what options will be available on release?

  • Fantastico futuristico ed elegante! Complimenti sony, non mi deludi mai! Da quel fantastico 1997! 🔝

  • It looks great!! I personally love the design. The mostly white with the little bit of black provides a good contrast and just makes the controller look clean. IMO, I don’t really care about the colorless buttons bc the colored buttons would look too tacky with the black and white aesthetic of the rest of the controller. I also never had any problems with the DS4’s analog sticks, light bar, or battery life, so as long as those aspects remain at the same level of quality, then I don’t see any downsides from this picture so far. A simple picture is a far cry from actually using the controller and feeling it in your hands though, but all in all, I can’t wait to get my hands on one!

  • will there be ‘under buttons’ or an attachment for them like the ps4 controller. (i hate pushing the stcks for l3 r3, i use the programable ps4 attachment for that)
    ???

  • The PS5 is amazing if we see it. it is a game-changer. Almost all of us prefer PS over xbox but not specifically for their feature but rather the game which are available. but this kills it. we might require better colour and i am hoping for them to change the basic colour. it has a good upgrade and of course better be good cause it been 7 years for them to do this. thanks to the playstation. it is honestly breathtaking. supporting you.

  • Can i use the controller of ps5 onto ps4 pro controller? Thanks..

  • I love most about the design but I do want to be heard. I see some people saying they want those classic colours on the X O ∆ 🔲 buttons and I have to agree. I would also like to keep a similar shape to the classic style even if it is just a hint of it. Where the D Pad and other buttons sit I’d like top see that clean round edge. I wish I could test the controller out some how to better understand why the shape has change so much. Also if you intend to offer colour variants I really really hope you offer them at intial release and don’t make us wait past that to get a different colour so we can all start out experiencing the new PlayStation together! Also I did try tweet you about the share button and adding some additional features to sharing our videos and streams! I am glad to hear that you guys are making an effort to improve on that feature! Take your time guys I will always be a guaranteed customer.

  • I have 2 questions
1.Will DualSense work with the PS4?
2.How are we going to play vr games which track the controller?

  • What about back buttons for us fps players? Will there be an attachment, will it come standard with them? Please give us back buttons! :D

  • I like the new design and the ideas for a better immersion. I hope there are settings like deactivating the microphone and the light on the controller.

  • Looks dope, but can we disable built in microphone if I don’t want someone to hear me or something.
