Introducing DualSense, the New Wireless Game Controller for PlayStation 5

See the first images of DualSense, which will bring the sense of touch to PS5 gameplay.

We’ve reached an exciting milestone with PlayStation 5, as we’re starting to ship our new controller in its final design to developers who are implementing its unique features into their games. But first, we wanted everyone in the PlayStation community to get a first look at the DualSense™ wireless controller, and hear our vision for how the new controller will captivate more of your senses as you interact with the virtual worlds in PS5 games. The features of DualSense, along with PS5’s Tempest 3D AudioTech, will deliver a new feeling of immersion to players.

When PS4 launched in 2013, the DualShock 4 wireless controller garnered a lot of positive feedback from gamers and developers for being the best PlayStation controller yet, and for introducing forward-looking features like the Share button. This brought us to the next question – how do we build upon that success?

After thoughtful consideration, we decided to keep much of what gamers love about DualShock 4 intact, while also adding new functionality and refining the design. Based on our discussions with developers, we concluded that the sense of touch within gameplay, much like audio, hasn’t been a big focus for many games. We had a great opportunity with PS5 to innovate by offering game creators the ability to explore how they can heighten that feeling of immersion through our new controller. This is why we adopted haptic feedback, which adds a variety of powerful sensations you’ll feel when you play, such as the slow grittiness of driving a car through mud. We also incorporated adaptive triggers into the L2 and R2 buttons of DualSense so you can truly feel the tension of your actions, like when drawing a bow to shoot an arrow.

This provided us with an exciting challenge to design a new controller that builds off of the current generation, while taking into account the new features we were adding. For example, with adaptive triggers, we had to consider how the components would fit into the hardware, without giving it a bulky feeling. Our design team worked closely with our hardware engineers to place the triggers and actuators. The designers were then able to draw the lines of how the exterior of the controller would look and feel, with a challenge of making the controller feel smaller than it really looks. In the end, we changed the angle of the hand triggers and also made some subtle updates to the grip. We also took thoughtful consideration into ways to maintain a strong battery life for DualSense’s rechargeable battery, and to lessen the weight of the controller as much as possible as new features were added.

For the buttons, you’ll notice there is no longer a “Share” button as we had with DualShock 4. Don’t worry – it’s not going away. In fact, we’ve built upon the success of our industry-first Share button to bring you a new “Create” button feature. With Create, we’re once again pioneering new ways for players to create epic gameplay content to share with the world, or just to enjoy for themselves. We’ll have more details on this feature as we get closer to launch.

DualSense also adds a built-in microphone array, which will enable players to easily chat with friends without a headset – ideal for jumping into a quick conversation. But of course, if you are planning to chat for a longer period, it’s good to have that headset handy.

Now, let’s talk about the colors. Traditionally our base controllers have a single color. As you can see, we went a different direction this time around, and decided on a two-toned design. Additionally, we changed the position of the light bar that will give it an extra pop. On DualShock 4, it sat on the top of the controller; now it sits at each side of the touch pad, giving it a slightly larger look and feel.

In all, we went through several concepts and hundreds of mockups over the last few years before we settled on this final design. DualSense has been tested by a wide range of gamers with a variety of hand sizes, in order for us to achieve the comfort level we wanted, with great ergonomics. Our goal with DualSense is to give gamers the feeling of being transported into the game world as soon as they open the box. We want gamers to feel like the controller is an extension of themselves when they’re playing – so much so that they forget that it’s even in their hands!

We are thrilled about sharing the final look of the DualSense controller with our fans, and we can’t wait for everyone to get their hands on it! I’d like to close with a message from SIE President & CEO Jim Ryan to the community:

“DualSense marks a radical departure from our previous controller offerings and captures just how strongly we feel about making a generational leap with PS5. The new controller, along with the many innovative features in PS5, will be transformative for games – continuing our mission at PlayStation to push the boundaries of play, now and in the future. To the PlayStation community, I truly want to thank you for sharing this exciting journey with us as we head toward PS5’s launch in Holiday 2020. We look forward to sharing more information about PS5, including the console design, in the coming months.”

  • Wowz.. I just can’t wait to see the PS5

  • If the console is half futuristic as this controller, so we will see a really different console as ever.

  • If the console is half futuristic as this controller, so we will see a really different console as ever. I already loved it.

  • Looking good.
Is that a Mic Mute on the bottom there? If so, nice.

  • Will the DS4 be usable on PS5?

  • It looks like it would be cool and handy. I’m excited to see the different color schemes that this controller will have down the road. I like that it has a built in microphone, that’s pretty rad and useful!

  • I think it looks dated, like a 90’s idea of futuristic. I really hope the ps4 controllers will work with ps5 games.

  • FARROCKGEEZWAY90

    PS5 TOUCH SCREEN CONTROLLER

  • So they went with an ugly two-tone design to ensure that many later purchase a single-tone design. That makes perfect $en$e.

  • I don’t really like where the light is placed.
I also don’t like the same crappy analog sticks,
    but I’m hella hyped.

  • I WILL say the PS button is lit. Good idea on that part. Just change back to the original sleek straight design that you’ve so elegantly delivered almost my entire life. I’ve been loyal since ps1 and have always taking so much pride in our controller

  • PhillyCdub_WestP

PS5 ins gonna be all that!!!

  • Too round on the top and sides

  • Work of art… Love It!!!
Really can’t wait to get my hands on it.
And can’t wait to see the dual tone on the PS5 too!

  • Loving the high contrast black & white, sci-fi lines and refreshed flow of external features visually. On DS4 everything was there as an individual piece with either abrupt sharp edges (dpad/shape buttons circle surround) or oddly shaped soft blends like around SHARE/OPTIONS which also influenced the unusual ripple shape on those buttons. Nice surface texture details on the analog stick edges and underside. While I miss the shape button colours, the PSP-style transparent buttons have an added visual depth and class. The symbolised CREATE and OPTIONS button labels should display better in game UIs than the pill button shape and squished text overlay PS4 games use.

Not covered here but I hope the internal SIXAXIS motion sensors are nicely upgraded for precision and minimising drift. The less you have to press R3 to re-centre the on-screen keyboard pointer or hold OPTIONS to recentre the imp in Dreams, the better. Hopefully the workable area on the touchpad’s a bit larger too.

‘built-in microphone array’ is mentioned, I wonder if there’s an invisible second mic separate to the hole visible under the PS button, for noise cancellation, or there’s a crossing twin (Sony dictaphone style) just under that hole. The hole looks a bit small for the latter.

The camera-facing light bar is missing, while I’m sure DS4 works fine on PS5 for games requiring it, hopefully there’s a cheap USB-C light bar attachment so you can get the best of new and old. And new tracking tech for future 3D positional tracking games.

  • I really liked it!

  • Not happy about the the base controller being white. IMO white is terrible for handheld devices its gets funky looking way quicker than any other colour. Should be optional in my opinion. Also kinda sad the iconic colours are now gone from the right side buttons. Those symbols and colours feel very PlayStation to me. Also not super keen on the new design of the hand grips, PS controller design has been a huge part of why i love the console so much and it kinda just feels like change for the sake of change. Besides that though the new touchpad looks better and reckon the light bar position is cooler looking but i hope the recess that is behind the touch bar isn’t as big as it looks because that just looks like another part of my controller ill have to clean all the time to stop hand gunk from building up.

    • the light is where the gunk will be down in the crack and can the PSVR camera even see it down there easily?

  • my biggest question: is the D-pad mechanical buttons or just a directional plate like the Dualshock 4?

  • Looks fine. Hope it can run awhile on a single charge.
The controller, the system, what they look like is fine but I’m waiting for the main event…
what the launch lineup looks like.

  • I think it looks awesome!!! I can’t wait to see what the PS5 is gonna look like! It kinda reminds me of the Avengers Endgame suits!

  • Those PSVita buttons look pretty. :) And the symmetry as well as distances to everything seem to be the same as DS4 despite the very different look, which is good.

The only thing I’d really wish for is a return to the PS3 style stick domes.

They rolled smoothly under the thumbs, and wore on them less than the hard DS4 domes edge pressed “down” at with any lengthier full movement.

  • Does the controller have a headphone jack?

  • Couple of small requests. There’s no shot of the full mic/mute button area to see if there’s an EXT. port for official dock charging or accessories but if there’s a dock, please make the controller self-align when placed on. I mostly got the hang of this on DS4 but it should be drop-n-charge easy like say, the 3DS dock charger. Also, if accessories plug into the USB-C port, they should have a USB-C pass-through so cable chargers don’t need to take the accessory off.

  • Looks awesome !

  • I’m really liking the Dpad. It looks really similar to the psp’s dpad which I really like

  • Does it work with PS4 as rumored?

  • This looks amazing though i would want it in a different color maybe a reverse color like black where the white is and white where the black is or like the color of the limited edition playstation 4 anniversary bundle with with the see through finish. i dig it now my mind is trying to figure out how the ps5 would look

  • Can I still use a headset/headphones with mic? Because I like to play with my headphones on. Too much TV noise makes my family go nuts about how in-game gunfight noise will damage their ears.

  • Looks awesome! Thanks for adding microphone into controller because for streamers its a must have.

  • Amazing can’t wait to get my hands on it

  • Seeing the color scheme of the controller has me wondering about the final look of the PS5. Now I’m actually interested in what the console looks like. The black square concept is finally over. This is truly a change from the norm.

  • BACK BUTTONS like the dualshock4 add on? sweat sensors? gyro? audio jack under the Mute sign? hope the rubber on the sticks doesn’t fall apart as quick

  • Gearhead_762x54R

I like the design, especially how the area around the analog sticks isn’t so chunky.

  • but….. does it have a headphone jack?

  • You have done great job for the new controller and the look and features awesome as expected, my concern is if have keep the standerd color as black it will be way better and it will get dirty very fast.the white color is really nice but if u have second options like totally black it will be easy to maintain, regeard

  • Please redesign home button away between analog sticks; bigger hands accidentally pressed home button on intense actions, always. Lastly, R3 analog stick must have choices enable/disable customizable button; same reason accidentally pressed R3 analog stick.

  • Really not feeling the color scheme..ion want it if it’s black and white

  • “I’d prefer removable batteries. I wouldn’t have to worry about the lifespan a controller being dependent on a built-in battery.”
So what will happen if the batteries come out of the when you accidentally drop the controller while playing a online game.

    • Well, first of all, I’m just gonna say, how clumsy are you that your primary concern is dropping the controller? and secondly, if your controller had batteries, you fumbled it, and they came out, I’d imagine you’d pick them up, put them back in, and keep playing.

  • Hope there’s a PS1 Grey color version in the future.

  • I like it. look futuristic. Hopefully there’s a all black and all white versions

  • Looks sexy, hopefully we will get a black version bundled with the console! Can’t wait to see how the console and the games looks like!

  • The led light facing me will be kinda distracting when playing some games, the home button is gonna hurt my fingers after a while and if it isnt it still wont be as do for table as dual shock 4, the joystick doesnt look like its gonna move alot so I will still suck at aiming, I wish it had brightness controls so I could adjust my brightness according to weather my light is on or off and depending on the content, we also need physical volume controls on the controller, when we getting buttons on the back of the controller for jumping or more controls, also would It have hurt to include a screen on the controller, this controller leaves alot to be desired. Hope someone who can fix these issues reads this and doesnt something about this.

  • It looks nice. I’d prefer a black controller though.

  • Will the PS5dual sense controller be compatible with PS4console?

  • I think there’s a reason the buttons are colorless. They added led so to it I think which is better than just paint. Also those complaining about the new ambient lighting around the touchpad always complained about the DS4’s light bar and will always complain. DS4 lightbar didn’t bother me and I played in the dark many times. This seems subdued, we’ll have to see. I would have been fine if they had placed it on the seams of the controller where the palms rest but I’m completely fine with this and I bet you when people get it hands on and place it next to a DS4 you’ll see how much more evolved this looks compared to DS4.

  • ماشاءالله.فتبارک الله الاحسن الخالقین

  • My HONEST reaction: the FIRST thing that went through my head was “it looks like an Xbox controller, not a PlayStation controller.” Sony abandoned their own brand and copied Microsoft’s aesthetics. The SECOND thing that went through my head was “I hope it ships in all-black” because I don’t like white stuff. It looks generic, cheap and uncomfortable. It doesn’t look friendly and inviting, like something I would want to pick up and hold for several hours. This dumb change reminds me of the controller shown with the PS3 reveal years ago, the controller that looked like a boomerang, not a PLAYSTATION controller. GET IT TOGETHER, SONY. CALM DOWN.

  • Look awesome!

  • Looks pretty cool. I want it.
