A Holiday Thank You

Hi Everyone,

Happy New Year! Since access to PlayStation Network was impacted during the holidays, we wanted to show our appreciation for your patience by offering all PlayStation Plus members that had an active membership or free trial on December 25th a membership extension of five days. The extension will be automatically applied, so no action is necessary to receive the extension. We will post additional information here on PlayStation.Blog when the extension becomes available. If your membership or trial ends before the extension is available, you will receive five days of Plus to enjoy once the extension becomes available (we will notify you when).

In addition, sometime this month we will announce that for a limited time, we will be offering a 10 percent discount code good for a one-time discount off a total cart purchase in the PlayStation Store as a thank you to all PSN members.

This discount can be used toward content available on PS Store including blockbuster new releases, award winning indie games, game add-ons and season passes, and an enormous selection of TV and Movies.

In case you missed it, click here to read about all the great games included in the January 2015 PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection lineup.

  • Thankyou Sony!

Personally even with 10% off i’ll stick to amazon. Agree with others that there should be an up/down vote on here, even knowing i’d get many downvotes over this:
stop whining! Many people were working throughout the days away from their friends and families while we sat on our asses eating chocolate, on break from normal lives. Not saying don’t feel annoyed, that can’t be helped. But aim your anger in the correct direction. Sony was attacked by cyber terrorists. Sony didn’t ask, want or need it. They hate that it happens. Terrorism is bad for business. But instead of yelling at the people who caused you to miss out on 3 days of killing stuff, you yell at the service provider who is suffering as much as you (if not more so) Where is the logic?! Is your brain on vacation too? Is the world becoming full of sociopaths?

Anyways thanks Sony for the gesture, i hope you continue to bring us more of the stuff we love in the year ahead

  • @194, ….boo hoo. The network was down for LESS than 5 days, so you get 5 days back. Get it? Get it? Get it? Get it? GET IT?

lol….. Really, where did some of you people get your education from?!? And if you REALLY want to ask “how can any of you see this as adequate recompense?” then I guess I really have to answer since you obviously need some help seeing the light – umm, because “some of us” aren’t spoiled little brats, that’s why ;) Any other kindergarten level questions?

Oh, and here’s a tip in life – just because the kid next door gets a ferrari from daddy, doesn’t mean you deserve one from your daddy too… maybe your daddy already gives you GREAT games for “free” with PS PLUS…be happy for what you’ve got, KIDDO.. or go cry to the neighbors daddy, I’m SURE he’ll LOVE your entitled whiney GREEDY attitude…………………… ;)

Oh and you have the audacity to talk about SONY’s “competency”… if you were “competent” AT ALL, you’d do some research and find out that DDOS attacks are not so easy to defend against – not at all.

Think before you speak / whine / cry…………………

  • Will the coupon have a expiration date? I not planning to buy anything until the end of the year.

  • “so those of us that wanted to play ps3 with our family online during the hoidays get nothing..”

Go on Twitter and search for Lizard Squad. Then rip into those creeps and demand they pay you a million dollars or you’ll sue.

  • What a joke.

  • Arigatou :) Love Sony & PlayStation.

  • It is simply amazing at the amount of bloggers who chant ludicrous replies about “too bad, soo sad”.
Keep in mind they do not speak for the general public, and hope it appears apparent to them all too soon why people are grieved.

I myself was hardly hindered and didn’t care.
    But many might be.

I am more concerned and appalled by the Customer Service, who has blatently hung up on me, when reporting that my account had been hacked.

Or the censorship that often happens with no violations , and yet these instigators go unaffected.

I am glad the compensation was initiated, but think a free month wouldn’t hurt.
The 10% is a nice touch, but hope the expiration isn’t too soon, or affect more digital sales.

Right now Sony has a major investment from me, so I am kinda stuck,
    but being a satisfied customer……?

On a positive side Resogun is working, and like it much better than Super Stardust Delta. THANKS!!!

And what about the potential compensation for PSN account information that was compromised during the breach? Any sort of compensation for that!

  • Is the network down. I live in Illinois.

  • Geez you people complaining need to stop. It may not seem like much but Sony was attacked. As a victim they are giving us something that we should be demanding of the attackers. Thank you for the good gesture Sony it’s appreciated =]

  • One more thing the only thing I ask is for PSN to protect our privacy and keep our information secure that is my new year wish! Thank you PSN!

  • UPDATE THE DAMN STORE. WORST SERVICE EVER.

  • The entitlement is strong in the comments.

  • This works. Thanks Sony. I bet you the ungrateful complainers will still take advantage of this.

  • @203 Lizard Squad or whoever really performed this, are not really to blame. They are highlighting yet again that the system is useless, the XBL system recovered in next to no time. The PSN came back, dropped off, came back and then disappeared for two more days.

  • LOL Reading these posts has made my day that much more enriching ;D

  • I wasn’t expecting that! I’ve noticed some people have got the discount code I’m in the uk and not got anything yet?

  • While I was not personally expecting any kind of compensation for the network issues, I think this is a nice gesture and a step in the right direction towards restoring a little trust and faith that Sony will try to do right by it’s customers in the end.

    Thank you, and Happy 2015!

  • @213 you can’t prevent a DDoS attack and even if you add more servers to increase infastructure, people like Lizard Squad can just easily increase the volume of their botnets and do even bigger scaled attacks. That’s the thing don’t be surprised if they keep getting worse and worse for both psn and live. So yes this is Lizard Squads fault, also DDoSing isn’t just a Sony issue its a internet issue.

  • Whaaaaaaa! Where’s my compensation?! Lol

Amazing. I don’t know how some of you brats, whinny entitled kids/ “Man” children live your sad lives with this way of thinking. I can’t think of any other hobby where this entitlement mentality is more prevalent.

Sony did the right thing and more. Added 5 extra days to plus subscribers and on top of that offered a 10% discount.
They didn’t have to offer a discount, But some of you entitled Losers want more… Failing to realize that they would be placing a big target on PSN they were to offer Big discounts, Free Games or instant Games collections ’cause the network will attacked more often by other entitled “Men” children losers with too much time on their hands.

Informed and Reasonable people don’t blame the weatherman for the weather. The way Internet traffic works, Ddos attacks can only mitigated, NOT 100% prevented.

    My .02

  • @ 201 Free isn’t the right word to describe PS+ games. You have to keep the subscription renewed to keep them. Since gamers can’t vote on the titles that interest them, random does work. Second, if there are any games through PS+ that interest me, chances are I already bought them new as discs. I’m not too worried about backing up save files if USB is not an option. Share Play has been blocked on about 14 games last time I checked, so I have to wonder about its future. However, its not like I’d use it myself. The whole PS+ requirement for online multiplayer is just low. Sony might as well say they have no faith in PS+’s ability to sell if they have to sink to MS’s level. Like you said, they can’t defend against DDOS attacks, so it’s not being used to make the network better.

  • People who are saying this is generous are naive. This is like me going up to a homeless man and giving him a 10% off coupon to burger king and giving him .68 cents.

  • I got gifted a game for the holidays and tried to renew my subscription but couldn’t..I think all of us deserved those 5 free days of PS+ Sony :/

  • @219 NO one can defend against a DDoS attack not even you at your computer.

There was no breach, there was no compromised data, there is nothing there to compensate for. The 5 days of lost time and the 10% dscount code are plenty generous, considering the circumstances of this issue.

  • 1. Why was live up before PSN?
***Lemmi see PSN is a global company maintaining servers accross the globe for years and Microsoft is US Primary.

  • 2. Compensation (10% and 5 days Plus) ?
***Internet is a power and wonderous creature that changes everyday. With more technology becomes that much harder to control. People who work in IT and programing Know there is always something new to learn. So why should anyone be at fault because people who spend their lives becoming weapons of cyber destruction can cause a couple days of down time. I don’t care for the compensation nor do I believe it should have been given out. “If you give a moose a muffin” RIGHT?
Think about everyone. We are moving closer and closer to a digital era only, right? Your info, life, everything is available for anyone to see and use to there pleasure. We live life on the daily risk that we can lose everything from one music download. So switch consoles. :D same danger applies. And honey when did anyone get their money’s worth for anything these days? Truth is we never its all based on personal opinion on wither or not we tolerate it.

  • @222 And that’s why I’m confident that the money is not being used to make the network better.

  • ***want compensation for security? it’s called live under a rock because security risks are everywhere :D! SUPRISE!

My true compensation is anyone who doesn’t understand that logic shouldn’t be using internet. O.O* harsh

I’m a gamer I play everything. I love all companies for what they do to keep my mind busy in a dream world. Sony isn’t an internet company. They are engineers of creation on the digital convas along with microsoft, steam, Nentendo, Sega, gosh alot more too.

So let’s stop being self entitled brats wasting time and get back to GAMING and living our lives. BOOM!

@218, 217 All hope is not lost!!! XD Smart People!

  • I don’t get people.

Sony did exactly the righ thing(i didn’t expect anything)
People who had their ps plus interrupted got their time back and everyone is getting 10% discount.

Those who complain about buying a ps4 on Christmas and not being able to play don’t really need to get anything but are getting the discount aswell. Yes Christmas was messed up for some but plus members had paid and lost days so they got them back. And i really wish people read more about what a hack is and what this was, people need to learn to take a breath before reacting like idiots. Yes a ddos can be.mitigated somewhat but increase in bandwidth above what is needed increases prices for the server costs even tho they wont be used and thus costing sony money and gues what those costs will be passed on to us.
    Amd

  • LOL comments like @227 make me happy.
Whiny brats can see their way out the door that way ->

You were compensated more than enough for the outage.
I didnt know we had so many network engineers on these blogs.

  • Does this include sale content?

  • @231 – there you go again, there was no SECURITY breach. This was a traffic attack and it can happen to anyone:
    http://www.circleid.com/images/uploads/8566b.jpg

  • “And what about the potential compensation for PSN account information that was compromised during the breach? Any sort of compensation for that!”

That’s what someone says who knows nothing about these attacks. They didn’t break into Sony’s network, they only did a DDoS attack which isn’t hard to do. They have thousands of computers on the Internet they infected with malware and tell them to attack a network. That just keeps everyone else from getting on. It’s impossible to stop hackers from doing that. All you can do is eventually block their IP addresses. You can’t do that in five minutes.

  • So, our compensation is spending more money on Sony? And you are ok with that? I cancelled my plus subscription after the downgrade on the quality of PS plus games, and the vulnerability of the service doesn’t make me want to come back.

  • But what about the long time ps4 customers that have playstation network what do we get just a 10 percent discount they should be ashamed they to give more what do you guys think

  • “I don’t know a single person who isn’t furious with sony right now.”

Therefore, everybody on the planet is mad at Sony, except the employees, obviously. This masterwork of logic is the only obvious conclusion. Everybody learn from this post, because it is posted by a god among men.

  • @226 their is no FIX you cannot prevent a DDoS (do you even know how it works and what it is), even if you add servers its pointless (50th time i’ve said this) why? look at Live. Lizard squad actually managed to bring it down (for a good while may i add) and the scale of these attacks from them keep getting bigger and bigger, and worse and worse. Also Sony hired Prolexic to deal with DDoS attacks, but since this was a large scale attack that it even managed to bring live down for a good while (i want you to imagine the scale of this attack) that it was even to big for them to handle. Like i said this is an internet issue as in there’s no Fix there’s nothing you can do to prevent it. If Lizard Squad somehow got a hold of your skype and started DDoSing you is that your fault? NO of course not only way you can deal with it is to pray that they’ll stop.

  • Happy New Year, and thanks for the PSN outage reimbursement

  • @ai11237

That avatar is so fitting for DuNda, considering the content he’s posting…

  • Thank you Sony.

  • I see that the offer is only for people who had an active psn+ on 25th or before. I had normal psn but couldn’t upgrade to the plus on Xmas when I had my ps4 because it wouldn’t let me sign in. Think every psn account should get the compensation as I wanted to go online but couldn’t. Let’s see if you answer here because you don’t answer anywhere else. Appalling customer services I must say

  • So how would i purchased and redeemed PS Plus on the 25th of december when all of that DDOS **** happened, it would had been nice if you would have given EVERYONE an voucher of PS Plus for 1 week, it’s not that hard to do Sony.

But 10% coupon to the people that could not buy or redeem PS Plus on the 25th, that is just the stupidest thing i’ve ever seen, at least make it an 25% or 30% and like i said throw in that voucher for PS Plus free for one week and mostly everyone will not complain.

Im complaining because i bought my PS4 on the 23th but opened it with my family on the 25th, and here i was for 5 days trying to login to PSN and also trying to redeem the “Four Games. One Pick.” deal thing, and since i was impatient with this situation i redeem the free $10 and used it on my PS3.

Now most of the games i own on the PS4 require PS Plus, so Sony can you please make your “Holiday Thanks” a little better? cause im not playing my PS4 games for a while, in fact im playing my PS3 games which are looking better than the ones i have on my PS4, i’ve been an long time user of the PlayStation products.

  • What do the people get if they rented a game from PSN on Christmas Eve
And didn’t get to play until Saturday and now the trial is over and I called PS and no answer.

  • Thank u Sony :)

  • Wow! The amount of uninformed and entitled idiots plaguing this comments section and the hobby as a whole is simply amazing.

Im actually embarrassed to be associated by default with some whinny and entitled “man” children and freeloaders who use this same services. At least there’s far more reasonable subscribers…So all hope is not lost.

  • 5 days -_- At least give me a month to procrastinate on paying my yearly $50. I also can’t wait to get $.50 off the Resogun DLC. This totally makes up for not being able to play my new games for Christmas and 2 other days.

  • If you wanna thank me for my patience or lack there of. Then please learn from these recent attacks Sony. I like many others understand DdoS attacks can’t be prevented. However it was the clean up after the attacks that was my problem.

On a side note: I do wanna thank server engineers for working during the holiday and listening to everyone’s *****ing on Twitter. I’ll admit I was on there ranting and raving once or twice. So I wanna thank the server engineers. Please learn from this Sony.

  • new and trying to redeem my gift card of 20 dollar can someone hell me

  • Thank you Sony for providing some compensation for something that wasnt your fault. I know, all these whiny, self entitled children seem to want to forget that part. You didnt shut your networks off at one of the busiest times of year, you were attacked.

However, I would like to offer an alternative solution. Instead of spending a million on these spoiled brats, take that money, invest it in a fantastic investigative service, find the names, address, parents, grand parents, aunts, uncles, 3rd cousins, bank account holders, creditors, and jobs of the people responsible for the attack, and publish them. Maybe if some accountability is thrown out there at least your dumber customers will have someone other than the victim to blame.
