PS Plus: Preview September’s Free Game Lineup

There’s a little bit of déjà vu going on as our PlayStation Plus members will once again receive two games free the day they hit the PlayStation Store – Velocity 2X on PS4 and Joe Danger’s release on PS Vita. Of course, there are other great titles including Sportsfriends on PS4, PS All Stars Battle Royale and Hoard on PS3 and TxK on PS Vita.

On PS4, Plus members will be able to download Velocity 2X and Sportsfriends. Velocity 2X is the sequel to Velocity Ultra and features arcade shooting and puzzle platforming with a cool teleportation mechanic. Sportsfriends is the perfect title to complement your parties, as it features 4 mini-games – BaraBariBall, Hokra, Super Pole Riders and Johann Sebastian Joust– to bring out the competitive side in everyone.

For PlayStation 3 owners, you can nab PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale, the game where you can get together with friends and pit PlayStation characters like Sly Cooper and Kratos against each other. And Hoard, an action-strategy title where you’ll play as a dragon attempting to get as much gold as possible.

PlayStation Vita owners can pick up Joe Danger for the first time on the platform and enjoy some good old fashioned stunt racing, as well as TxK, a remake of the classic arcade shooter Tempest.

All of these games will be free for Plus members starting September 2nd. If you want to see these titles in action, check out the video below.

  • I’ve been a ps plus user for 2 years and this is the weakest month yet. the only game i’ll even download is Velocity but it’s still free games so i can’t complain too much.

  • Not a bad month but it looks like you guys are running out of ps3 games.

  • A really bad month for me… the only thing that I will enjoy from here is Velocity 2X, hope the sales on this month are good

  • Wow! I don’t know why people are complaining! I am for one SUPER excited for Velocity 2x!!! I didn’t know it was going to be on PS+! That’s crazy!

  • Freaking YES! Velocity 2X. Sports friends is crazy awesome too. Lots of Vita love again this next month. Well-played!

  • I have to agree with oooaznkid… It’s the first time that I’m fully disappointed with the PSN Plus update games this month…

  • The PS+ lineup on PS4 has been pretty solid so far, but this is by far the best month yet. Can’t believe Velocity 2X is free right away. Keep ’em coming guys!

  • Driveclub next month will also be a bummer since we are getting half a game. I wish we would be given the whole FULL game instead of half a game for plus members.

  • We all need to stop referring to IGC games as “free.” We are paying for the subscription, just like Netflix. No one calls Netflix movies free.

That said, this is a good lineup. I was going to buy Velocity 2X on day one since the first one was one of the best shmups ever made. Sportsfriends looks fun too. The other games aren’t particularly exciting to me, but if I play one or two games per month then I’m getting my money’s worth.

Thanks for all you do, Sony–PS+ is still the best deal out there!

  • Also, why not give away PS All-Stars Battle Royale’s DLC?

  • Absolutely awful month for those that don’t own a PS4. I was hoping for Metal Gear Rising since Europe got it some time back. I’m still going to renew my subscription in December since the main attraction for PS+ is the sales, at least for me, but I’ve been displeased with your game offerings since the format changed.

  • Can we please get some AAA titles for PS4 soon? Some of the indies have been surprisingly fun, but I would love to see some of the early AAA titles (AC4BF, Knack, etc).

  • This is disappointing, beside velocity 2x there are no game that I want this month :(

  • SERYOUSLY? I PAY 50$ A YEAR AND 400$ IN A PS4 TO GET INDIES THAT COULD RUN IN MY WINDOWS 98?
WHEN THIS WAS IN PS3 I GOT BORDERLANDS 2 JUST SOME MONTHS AFTER THE RELEASE. NOW I CAN’T GET A DECENT GAME FOR PS4 THAT IS A YEAR OLD LIKE KILLZONE OR ASSASSINS CREED 4? REALLY? FCK U SONY! YOU GONNA LOSE LOTS OF PS+ MEMBERS. LIKE ME.

  • Month of Meh.
Velocity 2X is the only thing I’ll give any real time to.

What where you thinking make every game for the month an arcadey score based game,I mean I like those kind of games but nothing here gets me excited.Where is the variety?

I own All-stars(and it sucks), I own Joe Danger 2 already so I don’t really care to play the lesser version.I have no friends to play Sports friends with.I’ve played the Hoard demo before and didn’t really think it was anything special.
I’ve heard good things about TxK but I’ve played plenty of Tempest so while I’m happy to get it,the whole month just leaves me bored.
Now what will I play to tide me over until Smash Bros. and Freedom Wars are out in October?

  • @83

PS All Stars is like Smash Bros. but the mechanics are worse in every conceivable way. If that’s what we wanted to play, we’d stick with Smash. The game in your avatar pic, on the other hand, is a seriously underrated game and easily one of my favorites this generation. I just wish it had offline multi player and online wasn’t laggy.

  • It looks like a good month for vita owners. Seriously, though, put out the 64 GB cards in the US. I don’t have room for all those games.

  • Two thumbs way way up for Velocity 2x on plus… I will enjoy that game for many hours on both platforms. I’ve wanted to try out PS All-Stars for a while too, happy to see that one on it’s way to my Vita. Maybe enough people will enjoy it to get a groundswell for a sequel.

  • The quality of Plus has significantly decreased after March. There also needs to be at least 1 AAA game on PS4 to give after the console has been out for 10 months. Even the quality of Vita/PS3 games has taken a severe hit.
What happened to games like BioShock Infinite, Tomb Raider, and Batman Arkham City?

  • more crappy indie games

  • Yeah thanks Sony for velocity 2X is awesome game ; ) I have PlayStation all stars before but is really good for others players

  • 3 months in a row with nothing for me. please stop adding games that were just on sale. plus used to be so much better, what happened? dont get me wrong, i like plus a lot but this summer has been disappointing. hopefully october will be better. just tired of seeing games for band wagon gamers. i thought last winter and most of spring were awesome, some of the indie games are cool, but most of them just try to be like retro games without the charm. oh well, guess they cant all be zingers.

  • I have to say that I’m pretty psyched with September’s IGC lineup! I already own PSABR (which is a criminally-underrated game), but don’t own the other five. So, for the value, I’m already happy. The real reason I’m stoked is the day-one freebies of Velocity 2X and Joe Danger for Vita! I was already really excited for V2X, as I believe that it’ll be the best indie game released this year, and one of the best overall games released as well. But getting it for free!? Holy smokes, that’s awesome! I have Joe Danger on my PS3, but never really played it, as I don’t play many indies on my PS3. I was excited when I heard they were porting the game to the Vita, as I knew I’d be more likely to play it on that beautiful hunk of machine. But free!? So unexpected, and so welcomed. I interested to try out Sportsfriends, as I hear it’s a fantastic couch co-op game. Never heard of Hoard, but I’m willing to try it. And then the highly-rated TxK?! On my Vita?!? FOR FREE?!?! Hell yeah! It may not be my favorite month for the IGC this year, but I love the day-one free content. Keep it up, Sony!

  • Well… this sucks

  • DISAPPOINTED.

  • Kind of underwhelming for PS4, imho… Third month in a row.

  • I sure hope they have exceptional super sales otherwise PS+ is starting to disappoint!

  • Hi Kristine,

Thanks for another batch of free games. Can you confirm that Velocity 2X, Sportsfriends, and Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale are all cross-buy? I assume since you listed multiple platforms after their names that they are, but just checking.

Also, would Hoard also be cross-buy for PSP? I remember playing a demo for the PSP version years ago. Anyway, that would be funny if it is, but no big deal. So hard to find the time to play all these games :)

I’m happy to get PASBR on Plus after skipping the multiple times it’s been on sale. It’s not my type of game (I tried the beta before the game was released), but I’m looking forward to at least trying out the different characters and seeing the levels based on different games.

  • Wow a bunch of spoiled little brats. There free games. And I love that fact Sony gave us not so many great games. A lot of people are going to be on Destiny anyway. Why do you think its not a kickass lineup. Me? I don’t really care what the free games are. There free. There games. And some of those indies be better then some AAA games. Stop looking at the graphics and give the game a chance.

  • @96 Dead Space, Kingdoms of Amalur

  • And to think people complained about last month (which was great with Dragon’s Crown alone)

This month is the biggest disappointment I’ve felt in a long time. I want none of those games.

  • @130

So if these are free games, when I let my PS Plus expire after this month, I’ll still get to keep all my old games I had got from PS Plus?

  • If you don’t like Indie games, you shouldn’t like ANY games…I had my 20 bucks saved up to buy Velocity 2x just in case, but it’s FREE! :D

  • With all the cross-buy, it’s crazy how many games we get for Vita these days. I agree, we need bigger memory cards.

  • i would recommend everyone to give playstation allstars a try, it’s so much fun. Also if u want, go check out supersonybros on youtube as they post great 1v1 matches for those interested in the competitive aspect of the game. https://www.youtube.com/user/SuperSonyBros/

  • Been a PS+ member for years now and this is the worst month by far. For anyone that says, “Don’t complain about FREE games!”, I would like to remind you that it is not free; it’s $50/year. Sure, a great value, but not this month.

  • I’m very happy with this list, I don’t have any of these games. Always wanted to try PS All Stars, and both Velocity and TxK are awesome Vita games. Lots of good stuff here. Two games for PS4, two for PS3, and four on Vita. Works out about 60 cents per game. Astonishing value.

And let’s not forget we get the free cross-buy version of Don’t Starve the same day, which is effectively a late PS+ bonus too.

    I love you too Sony.

  • @130. It’s “they’re”, as in “they are”. Also, they’re not free. You do pay for Plus, don’t you?

  • Isn’t Driveclub releasing this month?

  • Velocity 2X looks interesting, otherwise this is by far the worst month for PS+. If you’re going to give us more indie nonsense at least have better PS4 sales.

  • Vita games all look like fun. I already got TxK on sale, but that is fine with me.

I’ve heard Nick go on so much about Sportsfriends I feel I have to play it or suffer.

  • Well, at least Destiny is coming out next week.

  • I am growing tired of these indie titles, gimme something like Killzone, madden 2014, NFS, Knack, Tomb Raider, or any other aging title. Please do not make it a full year of free indie titles for the PS4.

  • to everyone complaining about the quality of games dropping what do you expect if sony is supposed to be using the money to improve the network

  • Are we actually getting the PS3 version of Sports friends? The game’s post on release day only indicates that you get the PS4 version when you buy the PS3 version but not vice-versa: https://blog.playstation.com/2014/05/06/sportsfriends-out-today-local-multiplayer-madness-on-ps4-ps3/

This could be like Zen Pinball 2 where the content you buy for PS4 does not carry over to other PlayStation systems. Or maybe it will be like last month’s Dragon’s Crown situation where we get both versions?

  • PS Vita is the best reason to have PS+. Since so many games are cross play, we pretty much always get more than 2 games each month. 4 games for Vita this month is awesome! If you don’t own a Vita, you need to buy one. NOW!

  • Sportsfriends is fantastic and I don’t get why people are being negative about this month’s free games.

  • Can Sportfriends played with 2 controllers DS3 and 2 Moves? or it has to be all the same type of controller?

  • I’d have to say, this is the first time since I got plus a few years ago that I am not interested in a single game. Really really poor month, for me.

That having been said, I realize that every game is not going to appeal to every player every month, and overall I am still immensely satisfied with PS Plus.
