PS Plus: Preview August’s Free Game Lineup

This month our PlayStation Plus members will receive two games free the day they release on PlayStation StoreRoad Not Taken on PS4 and Metrico on PS Vita. In addition to these titles, members will receive other popular games like Fez on PS4, Crysis 3 and Proteus on PS3 and Dragon’s Crown on PS Vita.

PS4 owners can enjoy two puzzle games with very different mechanics. First up, there’s Road Not Taken, where you’ll aim to strategically maneuver through a forest as efficiently as possible with only a limited amount of stamina, all while saving lost children. Then you can don a fancy hat in Fez, as you jump around pixelated 2D levels housed in a 3D world. Shift your view of the landscape with the hit of a button and journey to find the pieces of a Hexahedron.

On PlayStation 3, Crysis 3 offers the sandbox first-person shooter world that made the franchise famous and there’s a new toy to play with – the Predator Bow. If you enjoy multiplayer, there’s a new mode here called Hunter where two players are pitted against a team of CELL agents with the goal of slowly turning all of them into fellow Hunters. Then, there’s the soothing experience of Proteus, where you’ll explore procedurally generated islands with a dynamic soundtrack.

Finally, PlayStation Vita owners will get their hands on the highly-anticipated puzzle-platformer Metrico and critically-acclaimed action RPG Dragon’s Crown. Traverse a world filled with infographics in Metrico, but don’t be fooled by the clean presentation – proceeding through these charts isn’t as straightforward as it might seem. Invite up to three friends to join you in the dungeons of Dragon’s Crown, and thanks to Cross-Play you can even go adventuring with your buddies who have PS3s.

All of these games will be free for Plus members starting August 5th. If you want to see these titles in action, check out the video below.

  • Not one to complain especially since their free games but not happy with the ps4 selection .. Pretty happy bout the lot of vita games tho for my 2 week trip to Washington and Cali so that’s cool. Not happy with the announcement of ps1&2 games being tooken off ps NOW , some ps plus ideas ..killzone or knack would be cool

  • Good selection of games, even though I own everything that has been released so far.

Though it will be nice to have access to some of them on other platforms, assuming that Fex and Dragon’s Crown are errors.

  • I’ve been considering Dragon’s Crown for the past few weeks… Glad I didn’t buy it before knowing it will be free! Overall, it’s a great PS+ month for me!

  • omg yes!

i played the fez demo and instantly added it to my games list. i really wanted to buy it a couple weeks ago, but something told me to wait. i just cannot get over how cute that game is. very happy about that. i’m also happy that i’ll get to try out road not taken because that game has a neat art style as well. two beautiful ps4 games for august, thank you sony!

  • Bordering on a little too much indie love but Fez was great and Crysis 3 and Dragon’s Crown excellent choices. Keep up mixing up the genres and I’ll stay happy, even if not totally sold on some games. I just hate it when we get stagnant on the variety of games.
Will probably keep seeing indie PS4 titles until 1st anniversary. After that, retail titles should start creeping in every couple months, especially once the larger titles start showing up regularly. Maybe I’m optimistic but I could really see something like Knack show up around Christmas or maybe ACIV once Unity comes out.

  • Excellent month!

The games I get to play on my Vita are what I’m most excited for. Metrico, Dragon’s Crown, Fez, & Proteus!

  • When can we expect a non indie game on PS4? Since launch it seems that’s all we get from plus and were forced to have plus just to play online now so it’s not cool. Why do you keep trying to shove indie down our throats? Sorry, I’m not a big fan of indies and it’s getting overkill on PS4.

  • If I had a PS4 I would get Road Not Taken.

  • Atlus has balls putting DC on sale for two weeks prior to it going on PS+. I’m surprised at there being no backlash about this. I don’t care, but there always seem to be people that flip out over things like that.

  • Just looked at the EU summer sales list and I have to ask where are our sales. After that summer blast turned out to be a dud I want some great sales.

  • Great another month of NOT next-gen games for the ps4 really? What really gets me going. With all the Blu-ray updates they put in. They still haven’t released a Blu-ray remote controller. Instead we still have to use the ps4 controller. Which has to be recharged after two movies.

That clearly shows they deliberately put the worst battery they could find in it. So we would be forced to replace it in a much shorter time than the ps3 controller. So these petty decisions sony has made. Will guarantee them losing this console war to xbox. Keep doing what your doing sony you’re your own worst enemy…

  • @307

What AAA game could you reasonably ask for it hasn’t even been a year since the ps4 launched and the games we’ve gotten have been good even great most of the time.

  • Great lineup….getting ready to download and delete fivehundred times on my vita this month….with memory cards prices still being issued by satan.

  • Looks like this is another lame month …

  • Disappointing month.
In fact, the last months have been very bad, especially for owners of PS4.
Do not have imagined the PS4 as a console for indie games. For this I use my PC.
    Really disappointed.
What has saved my account PLUS is the content of the PS3.

  • This is a really great month! I have a couple of these selections on my PC, but they’re all awesome games.

On a side note, indie games are great. Too many people in the comment thread aren’t backing up your arguments with reasonable points. Have you ever tried these games? The older indies, like Braid, Limbo, and Fez, are outstanding. I only wish games like that had been around when I was playing my old NES as a kid. Additionally, Spelunky, Velocity, Thomas Was Alone, Lone Survivor, Hotline Miami, and Guacamelle are a lot of fun. And though some of the following indies haven’t been released on PS3 yet, The Swapper, Rogue Legacy, Gone Home, and the Amnesia games are really well made. Each of these games give gamers a unique experience by creating a refined atmosphere and great gameplay.

There are many AAA games that are horrible. AAA games often require a large time commitment that many people, like me, can’t give. Furthermore, I’d rather have a well made indie game that received positive reviews than a game like Murdered: Soul Suspect, which received poor reviews but was a AAA game.

Gaming is about a quality experience, not dollar value.

  • PHOENIXRISING_75

Totally stoked about Dragon’s Crown. Been wanting it for awhile, was hoping it would show up on PSPlus

  • Are we ever going to see any QUALITY games on the PS4 from PlayStation Plus? I have liked a few of the indie games, but for the most part they’ve really been garbage. I know there are many who agree with me. We’re not even necessarily looking for a AAA game but just a game with some actual substance that you can play more than once and not get board with it. Thanks PlayStation for all you do! Long Live Play!

  • Yeah, why’s everyone bashing Indie games? Seriously. Most Indie games are better than some AAA titles by a longshot. I guess gamers these days just don’t give games a chance anymore…

  • Damn, I got Crysis 3 when it was $5 in January, but looking forward to the other games

  • terrible month! :(

  • Look at mid January post blog when Bioshock Infinite was added for the week to the instant game list that included DMC: Devil May Cry, Borderlands 2, Uncharted 3, Binary Domain, XCOM and many others. Crysis 3 had discount price for $5 for PS+ users. I bought it then along with Puppeteer for $7. Those were the good old days. Now, Sony wants to double dip the Crysis 3 game. I HATE THIS NEW PS+ FORMAT. I think it has to do with Sony pushing Playstation Now (gaming subscription)…. and pretty much making PS+ (internet play and few discounts).

  • Awesome month!! Thank you guys.

  • Loved Dragon’s Crown on PS3, glad to be able to play it on my Vita now!

  • good stuff. already have the crysis when it was on sale for 5 bucks not too long ago. and picked up fez when it was on sale for 8 at its launch. otherwise solid stuff, especially considering metrico and road not taken are brand new to the platform

  • After being abused by Microsoft for seven years I bought a PS4 yesterday. I can already sense a greater customer appreciation on this side. Different games too than I would normally play, and for free. Membership is ten dollars cheaper too. I think I am in good hands.

  • Fantastic month of content! I can’t wait to finally play Dragon’s Crown!

  • This is an AMAZING lineup for this month. Since you made the changes in July, the PS+ games lineups have been OUTSTANDING!!!!!! I’d consider myself a subscriber for life at this point!

Anyways, two Day 1 games is Awesome! Road Not Taken and Metrico look great!

SO EXCITED we’re getting Dragon’s Crown, was super jealous of Euro PS+ members when they got it so thank you so much for bringing it over here as well! Also so awesome we’re getting it on PS3 too, just wish it had separate trophy lists.

Fez, Proteus, and Crysis 3 arent’ exactly my type of games, but I’ll check them out. I actually don’t own any of the 6 games this month, so it couldn’t be more perfect for me!

THANKS AGAIN and keep up the great work with PS+.

  • Absolutely superb lineup! Well worth the subscription fee, keep it up :)

  • Booohh, worst month of the year :( my bday’s month :(

  • Plus seems to have created some weird pretend universe in people’s minds where if you buy a console, that is the end of your financial outlay, and from there on you’re owed everything you want because you were “loyal” enough to buy the hardware (which Sony sells pretty much at cost, by the way). I don’t get it. If you’ve had your eye on a title for eight months and you really want to play it, buy the damn game. My goodness.

Also, if you ditched your PS3 completely and then expected the PS4 library to be as robust as that of the system that’s been out for seven or eight years years, you might have bigger problems than a disappointing month of the IGC. And all the “just give us your worst AAA game on PS4” complaints are even funnier. You’re begging for mediocre games while dismissing much better ones. More power to you, I guess.

Even with mostly indie games, the IGC seems too good be true. What you get for your money is ridiculous. I fear it will go away at some point, and I dread the day. Until then, I’m thankful for every “crappy indie game” I can get my hands on.

  • hollowheart-king

Definitely a better month than last months!!

  • Loved all the choices!! In special the cross-buy ones!!!

  • O.O Dragons Crown and FEZ? Sweet!!! I played a little of Dragons Crown, but never got the chance to really get into the game and I’ve been thinking about buying FEZ. Glad I waited on that one.

  • so when do you plan on giving us GOOD ps4 games? 90% of the ones you give out are complete trash.

no reason you cant give out a game like Knack yet, not like anyone is buying it anyways.

  • PrattleSnakeVenm

Ps4 only owner: The disappointment is real. Easily the most boring month yet.

  • More indie games for the PS4… so sick of those.

  • I’m glad Road Not Taken is part of this months PS+ update. Great lineup as always. Been a member since day one and the past year and a half of it blew me away! Keep up the great work Sony and your affiliates.

  • It looks like another good month.

I only added PSN+ in May when I got my Vita, so something I’d like to see is “catch up” free games — bring back some of the older PSN+ free titles as bonus games for latecomers like me.

  • @Everyone complaining about indies. You know, It wouldn’t hurt to actually play a few once in a while. Besides, they don’t have to give you the “free” games at all. PS+ is mainly about the discounts. The free stuff is just an added bonus.

  • yes indystation strikes again meh least we can play the ea games oh wait nope there not indy games.oh well bright side with play station now we can pay to play games we already own.and sadly i wouldnt even care cuz i could always just not pay for plus anymore.but since sony went the xterd rout by charging us to play games online i am forced to pay for it.least i can finally watch my 3d movies.

  • Although i love FEZ and Road not Taken looks interesting, i think it’s time for a big game for PS4 of Plus, Killzone: Shadow Fall would be great and if your’e feeling generous AC: Black Flag would be absolutely awesome (:

  • yay for dragon’s crown. i’m halfway through muramasa so by the time it hits, i should have more vanillaware goodness to look forward to

  • *Le Sigh* Gamers are such shallow people.

  • I had to come and sign in so I could post a comment saying how great of a month this is for me. Possibly the best month all year. Great work guys.

  • @315 Would you rather there be no games to play on PS4? The AAA titles are in development but aren’t ready yet. They will come. In the mean time I say enjoy the great indie games that are being made.

And how amazing do you expect the free game lineup to be for a console that’s not even a year old yet?

  • I’ve given this a lot of thought and would like some feedback as to what you guys think. As someone who grew up with a PS1 and has owned every Playstation console since, and currently owns every current gen platform (PS4, XB1, WiiU, PS Vita, 3DS, Gaming PC, and a Macbook Air). I do not like where the Playstation is headed as everything feels like they’re trying to milk as much as possible from customers as opposed to providing a clear value proposition.

If you think about it, this is the first console that feels like it isn’t launching with anything new of value.
    PS1 = CD player + games
    PS2 = DVD player + PS1 playability
    PS3 = Blu-Ray player + PS2 (launch version) and PS1 playability
PS4 = Blu-Ray (again) and is the FIRST system to not launch with any support for a previous gen.

  • It is clear that they just want to FORCE services like Music/Video unlimited by taking out CD/MP3/MP4 playback, which, okay…I bought a gaming system. But what exactly are we left with? You can’t play games online for free like PC or WiiU (clearly we know it’s possible to not charge), but then you have to say, “PS Plus is more about the services you get with it”. For $50 a year you get:
    -Online game saves
-IGC Indies (Which, I have a feeling, MOST gamers like myself wouldn’t even buy them for $2 on sale).

Instead of patching in support for PS1 games (which has been possible for over a decade on PC through emulation), they’d rather double dip on previous purchases by doing PS Now which is going to cost even more money.

  • I REALLY want to love the PS4 and I’m not regretful of my purchase, I just wish Sony would’ve put something out that felt more complete, or new, or bundled together PS+ sub and PS Now so it felt like I am valued as a customer of their products and this is the first time it feels like they’re just trying to squeeze more money out of me at every turn, instead of offering a true value to me and other supporters of their platforms. At the end of the day, an answer to these qualms would be “Well, sell your PS4 or don’t use PS+, PS Now then…” But is that really a good thing that for a company to have customers feeling this way towards their new system?

  • I wish I can beat some sense to some of these idiots. They are not honest with their opinions and does not explain why the month is awful. I think the month is fine. If they have a PS4 only, who in the right mind would own one just for PS+? You people must be pretty dumb to sell your PS3 if you think the value of PS+ would benefit the PS4 alone.

    @Remmy8199 You ain’t kidding…
