PS Plus: Preview August’s Free Game Lineup

This month our PlayStation Plus members will receive two games free the day they release on PlayStation StoreRoad Not Taken on PS4 and Metrico on PS Vita. In addition to these titles, members will receive other popular games like Fez on PS4, Crysis 3 and Proteus on PS3 and Dragon’s Crown on PS Vita.

PS4 owners can enjoy two puzzle games with very different mechanics. First up, there’s Road Not Taken, where you’ll aim to strategically maneuver through a forest as efficiently as possible with only a limited amount of stamina, all while saving lost children. Then you can don a fancy hat in Fez, as you jump around pixelated 2D levels housed in a 3D world. Shift your view of the landscape with the hit of a button and journey to find the pieces of a Hexahedron.

On PlayStation 3, Crysis 3 offers the sandbox first-person shooter world that made the franchise famous and there’s a new toy to play with – the Predator Bow. If you enjoy multiplayer, there’s a new mode here called Hunter where two players are pitted against a team of CELL agents with the goal of slowly turning all of them into fellow Hunters. Then, there’s the soothing experience of Proteus, where you’ll explore procedurally generated islands with a dynamic soundtrack.

Finally, PlayStation Vita owners will get their hands on the highly-anticipated puzzle-platformer Metrico and critically-acclaimed action RPG Dragon’s Crown. Traverse a world filled with infographics in Metrico, but don’t be fooled by the clean presentation – proceeding through these charts isn’t as straightforward as it might seem. Invite up to three friends to join you in the dungeons of Dragon’s Crown, and thanks to Cross-Play you can even go adventuring with your buddies who have PS3s.

All of these games will be free for Plus members starting August 5th. If you want to see these titles in action, check out the video below.

  • Fantastic Month! Kudos!

  • If you have all three platforms, then there is something for all gaming tastes. Puzzle games take me awhile to get into, but I’ll get to them eventually. Cysis 3 will be a great title to play with friends. And all that Vita Crossbuy love is awesome. I can’t wait to pick up another Vita soon. Keep up the great work SCEA. Consider Monster Monpiece for next month’s\ September’s Plus IGC; I will be broke after attending Tokyo Game Show and exploring Japan, lol. Also please work with Konami on getting Suikoden 2-5 as digital classic for PS1\PS2.

  • Dragons Crown, Fez, and Crysis 3! Three games I’ve wanted! =)

  • Come on sony give me something worth my money for the ps4. These indies are not cutting it, they are short and boring. Kill zone or knack should be tossed on there one of these months. OR make ps now part of the plus and really interest me. It would be better if I could play my ps3 digital games that I own on ps now with out re-paying. Just an ideal you the tight a$$@$ in suites.

  • Yet another month of crap indie games, The only reason i even still have plus is so i can play online with my PS4 other then that it feels like the first year plus came out 98% retro indie games. seems like the days of AAA IGC are long gone.

  • I already have Crysis 3 and the other games don’t interest me in the slightest, but I just want to thank you guys for showing the Vita some love with all the cross-buy games that trickle down from the PS3 + PS4 IGC games. 4 games this month included in the plus subscription for Vita is pretty good no matter how you look at it

  • Can’t say I’m impressed at all with the PS4 titles…I know it’s early in the PS4 lifecycle but the recent games have disappointed me.

  • Unbelievably good lineup. Sony, you continue to surround me with great games and I thank you so very much for it.
Dragon’s Crown for PS3 is going to be so immaculate.

  • But yeah I will have to agree that the PS4 lineup needs at least one higher end game. It’s coming up on a year and we haven’t seen much of anything on the PS4 side. If a year passes without a single game on the IGC that wasn’t a 5/10/15 dollar game when it was brand new I think a lot of people will be reevaluating the need for PS Plus at all

  • And no, I’m not begging for free games. I wouldn’t even mind it if they put up a game that I already own on PS4 (which is most of the ones I want anyway). It’ll just make me feel like there is some value to be had in the subscription service when I don’t play online

  • FAIL

    INDIE FAIL PS4 FAIL

TECHNOLOGY WASTED ON 16 bit BS
    SIDE SCROLL LAME

  • @BajumatisBack – I feel the same way…I just want a title that has substantial substance. There are some indie games that I would be more than happy with. I think, at least for me, that the recent titles feel pretty bland.

  • is good to have a vita this month!

  • Oh yiss…

Road Not Taken — No PS4 yet, but yes.

Fez — Looks like I’ll be retreading my PC playthrough, as I do prefer running identical games on a console (see: Rogue Legacy).

    Crysis 3 — Eh. Prolly won’t bother.

Proteus — Have on PC, but still’ve yet to boot it up. Looks I’ll start it up in August.

Metrico — Dunno I’ve ever known of this’n, but yet another reason for me to want a Vita.

Dragon’s Crown — Again, on the backburner for eventual Vita-lization.

    Likin’ this month!

  • AWESOME!!! I just bought a Vita last month, thanks for making that a happy decision for me Sony! Bring on August!

  • Awesome! the only game I want here is Fez….which I purchased a couple of days ago…can I somehow get a refund? My plus subscription has been useless thus far.

  • So good!!! I am all in with this month, particularly with the Vita selections. Metrico AND Dragon’s Crown!

  • WTF is the problem with the PS4 lineup!!!! Every *ucking month some small, low budget, indie games. Just stop with it and deliver some quality games, worth the 50$ subscription!

  • Probably the best month of PS+ we’ve seen for Vita yet.

Please, ignore the myopic vitriol about indie games – please keep bringing the cool experimental and interesting stuff!

  • BLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASTOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOISEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Awesome month for VITA!

    #YesVitaYesBuy

  • Thanks for delivering cross platform titles. I have had a few times where a title of interest was made free on a platform I didn’t have (vita, ps4) and not on the one I do. I view this as a response to feedback on this issue that some of us have given. I’m glad to see my feedback was listened to. Nice job.

  • Already own Fez (just like Strider last month), but I will give Road Not Taken and Metrico a try.

When is NA going to get Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance?

Also, Mortal Kombat 9 for PS3 would be awesome.

  • PlayStation… Thank you. Four great looking games for my favorite system, the Vita :).

One thing though, why give away Metrico? I’m sure many people (myself included) were planning on actually purchasing it as soon as it dropped. Regardless of your crazy business practices though, thank you.

  • Cmon sony it’s bad enough that you still haven’t given ps4 owners any added functionality with fw updates but you force us to pay for ps+ to play online then you give us some of the worst games as freebies. Way to take a huge smelly dump on those of us who have supported you the most. Yes, people who buy new consoles during early release are your most fervent supporters but they are the one’s who get the short end of the stick. Just 1 example is nba 2k14, probably one of the best looking games to come out on ps4 and when ps+ offered it for free it was only to people who own a ps3. The only 2 free titles that have been worth a damn since the release of the ps4 8 months ago is resogun and mercenary kings. 2 worthy titles in 8 months? Disappointment is the only way to describe it.

  • I only have PS3, can I still download Dragon’s Crown for free?

  • Pretty solid lineup this month. I appreciate the crossbuy between platforms, and how this lineup includes recet titles. I already bought dragons crown when it was on sale for psn, so a little down about that but its still a great game to include.

Also, if you guys take recommendations, I’d like to see disgaea 3 (vita) and lbp vita in the future. Not sure if that’s asking for a lot, but i’d love to see it happen.

  • I have two Dragon’s Crown psvita cartridges lol

  • Are we going to get an Assassin’s creed sale anytime soon?

  • – First, great lineup of games. very cool stuff all around.

    – Second, the question everyone is asking: we get dragon’s crown for both systems? if so, EXCELLENT lineup of games.

    – Third, for all Ps4 complainers with the “give me free AAA games now!” attitude: Ps+ is for ALL USERS, and caters to a wide range of tastes and platforms, I mean, we are talking about a lot of content spread somewhat evenly between all three systems. The PS4 is still too new to be giving away games that are mostly in bundles and that people are still buying. just saying.

I am currently a ps3 only owner, and a very new adopter of the Ps+ subscription, and I already got more than twice my money’s with on titles, in barely 2 months. Even by just getting the Ps3 content. And it gives you the chance to try things you probably would pass otherwise because your budget won’t allow it or you did not even knew they existed in the first place… So, Great job Sony, keep it up.

  • I don’t really understand why anybody would expect big games to already hit Plus on PS4. Console hasn’t even been out a year yet and doesn’t have the library to support that. PS3 was well into it’s life-cycle when Plus started, so it had the catalog to deliver bigger games. Vita didn’t have Plus for a while too, and even then they had to dip a bit into the PSP library before the Vita has enough stuff to support it. You are out of your minds if you think PS4 is ready to deliver that kind of quality in Plus offerings yet.

That said, I’m not really a big fan of the PS4 games, but whatever. It’s still a decent month. Not terrible at least, and offering both versions of Dragon’s Crown is pretty sweet. Can’t really complain much.

  • Finally, a nice little revival of Crysis 3’s multiplayer xD Time to get some MP trophies! Add me if you want to play! PSN: DudeV300

  • Not mad about Dragon’s Crown for free. Vita definitely needs some more attention.

  • Awesome game lineup! Fez and Dragon’s Crown will definitely be getting lots of play time by me in August.

  • lol I remember paying 50 smackers for Dragon’s Crown on PS3. Lol, BUT I am still stoked that on vita plus the other freebies. We’ve got an awesome month ahead of us!

  • Crysis 3 is a bad FPS and Fez is one of the worst games ever created, but Dragon’s Crown make up for it I guess. The rest are games that everyone will drop after some hours (or minutes)… only if they come to even download them.

    Really bad month, again.

  • *Reposting*
You could offer classic games (PS1/PS2) for IGC. Instead of Vita and PS4 games nobody cares or overrated games of the “present”

    Ideas for IGC:
    Okami
    Arcana Heart 3
    Prince of Persia
    Devil May Cry
    Catherine
    Warp
    Hitman Collection

For PS2: God Hand, Siren series and that kinda’ games, Personas and SMT, Gitaroo Man ?,and… I don’t really know which other games there are…
For PS1: I don’t know… Silent Hill, MGS, for example.

  • LTSwordmastre360

I don’t have any of the games listed & am definitely interested in playing them, so this month seems better to me than last month, yay~!

I’m still a little unnerved by the amount of Indie games that are free on PS+.

I REEEEEEALLY want something along the lines of either a Dynasty Warriors game or some kind of JRPG like the Atelier series.

  • Holy crap, that’s 5 Vita games!

  • @Viewtiful_Gene

Fez is actually one of the best platforms/puzzle games every created.

  • Look like I don’t have to waste money on buying Crisis 3 and Dragons Crown after all !!

  • platformers* ever*

Really wish I could edit my posts.

  • Anyone thinking indies, being teams of only a couple of people with almost no budget, can compete with multi-million dollar studios with hundreds of employees and mocap studios and all that stuff, are completely ignorant about what it takes to create a videogame.

Sometimes, 8-bit style visuals are a choice. Sometimes, they’re not because the dev can’t afford to buy a licence to use an expensive 3d engine, or they don’t have the resources to operates one, or code their own 3D engine, whatever. It’s not always the case, of course, some indies are putting out some impressive work, visually speaking. But asking indies to compete with big developpers is just showing are ignorant someone actually is about game development.

New consoles can usually render better graphics. But everytime there’s a jump in graphic quality, there’s also a jump in development time, and costs. If there aren’t more triple-AAA superproductions available right now on PS4, it’s because those are a MASSIVE investment in money, manpower and development time. If there wasn’t any indie titles released, there would be a big pile of NOTHING.

Be glad there are some indies. At least there’s SOMETHING.

  • Very thanks! Awesome month! and… Happy Birthday to me! n_n

PD: Persona 4 Golden (PS Vita) for september? o_o

  • looks like another disappointing month for ps4 :(

  • I really can’t muster even the slightest bit of enthusiasm for this month’s indie-heavy lineup. Do not care at all about another 18-month-old FPS, either. I should know better than to get my hopes up, and I think from now on my expectations have been permanently lowered. Blerg.

  • Well from what I see this looks like a great line-up and I like this for the month of August.

  • Nothing good this month either. Not interested in Fez nor The road not taken. Not a fan of indie games at all :(

  • very good month thank you i really like how you guys are recently offering games on multiple platforms now instead of how you used to do it like releasing jet set radio on vita and a few months later giving it to ps3

  • Extremely disappointing month. Dragons Crown, and I guess Fez, are the only good games. Everything else suck. You guys need to start offering non indie games on ps4. Microsoft really made you guys look weak for August, and free games should be something you guys are great at.

  • I guess it’s time to play the copy of Crysis 2 that I’ve had on my computer for over two years now. Never got around to starting my copy of Fez or Proteus either. I’m looking forward to trying out Dragon’s Crown on the PS3. PS3 and Vita folks really lucked out this month with all the cross-play titles.
