PS Plus: Preview August’s Free Game Lineup

This month our PlayStation Plus members will receive two games free the day they release on PlayStation StoreRoad Not Taken on PS4 and Metrico on PS Vita. In addition to these titles, members will receive other popular games like Fez on PS4, Crysis 3 and Proteus on PS3 and Dragon’s Crown on PS Vita.

PS4 owners can enjoy two puzzle games with very different mechanics. First up, there’s Road Not Taken, where you’ll aim to strategically maneuver through a forest as efficiently as possible with only a limited amount of stamina, all while saving lost children. Then you can don a fancy hat in Fez, as you jump around pixelated 2D levels housed in a 3D world. Shift your view of the landscape with the hit of a button and journey to find the pieces of a Hexahedron.

On PlayStation 3, Crysis 3 offers the sandbox first-person shooter world that made the franchise famous and there’s a new toy to play with – the Predator Bow. If you enjoy multiplayer, there’s a new mode here called Hunter where two players are pitted against a team of CELL agents with the goal of slowly turning all of them into fellow Hunters. Then, there’s the soothing experience of Proteus, where you’ll explore procedurally generated islands with a dynamic soundtrack.

Finally, PlayStation Vita owners will get their hands on the highly-anticipated puzzle-platformer Metrico and critically-acclaimed action RPG Dragon’s Crown. Traverse a world filled with infographics in Metrico, but don’t be fooled by the clean presentation – proceeding through these charts isn’t as straightforward as it might seem. Invite up to three friends to join you in the dungeons of Dragon’s Crown, and thanks to Cross-Play you can even go adventuring with your buddies who have PS3s.

All of these games will be free for Plus members starting August 5th. If you want to see these titles in action, check out the video below.

  • OMG Dragon’s Crown….that’s sweet…I never expected that…anyway I didn’t even realized we were in the end of the month already…..August is already a great month…..cool games. My backlog will grow a lot because I don’t have any of these games.Although I want Crysis 3 in disc…..free is always valid ha.Thanks Sony.

  • Already have Dragon’s Crown on the Vita, but I’d been really thinking about grabbing it on PS3 as well, so that’s pretty awesome. Also, I’ve been meaning to grab Fez and Proteus for a while now, and both Metrico and Road Not Taken look very interesting. I’m not into the Crysis games too much, but I may give this one a try. Pretty great month, all things considered. Only downside is waiting a week to play the games. :)

  • I accidentally auto-renewed my subscription for another year (time for the philosophy master, less for gaming), and because I’ll be away from my ps3 for a long time decided to get a Vita in order to get the most out of the subscription and not waste it.

I can gladly say it was TOTALLY WORTH IT, both the Vita purchase combo-ed with the sub renewal.
Love the aaa’s, love the indies!

Now the only issue will be concentrating on the study and not get to swallowed by so much great games with my new Vita ;)

  • @snipe agreed. Lords of the fallen looks sick to. Waiting to play an RPG that plays like GOW!

  • Great month!
I was crazy to play Dragons Crown!
October i will get my PS4 and i already have a lot of games to play, thanks to IGC.

  • Only bull****, NO more indie game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i dont even have one game this is awesome its my best month thnk u sony specially fo metrico

  • YES DRAGONS CROWN ON VITA!

Not too interested in the rest of the lineup (Crysis would be decent if I had a PS3) but that alone makes up for it. Keep up the good work!

  • What has happened to PS+? It has become worse than it was when it first launched. We used to get 1-5 games just about every week. Now it’s a couple a month? How about putting games up that people actually REALLY want to play again and not just the garbage no one would pay for anymore? I wasn’t very satisfied with PS+ when I first subbed to it and when it was revamped with the “Instant Game Collection” it made me want to re-up. The line-ups of the last several months has really gone downhill. I blame a lot f it on Sony requiring PS+ to play online with PS4. Now that people need it for a basic service, the service has lost much of it’s luster. Don’t even get me started on the discounts. Discounts are useless if there isn’t much you want that is discounted.

  • Awesome. Been waiting for Dragon’s Crown to hit Vita after EU got it free. Excited!
Proteus and Road Not Taken are also awesome. Good month for plus!

  • 4 games playable on the PS3 and Vita? That’s great, considering that PS4 still gets 2. Proteus is the kind of game I just can’t understand (The PC version was ok to play for maybe 10 minutes) but the rest of the games all look really nice, considering how many we get.

  • This month I’m really proud of being a plus member!! So anxious for that dragons crown game on my vita.

  • I also think indie titles tend to be more difficult than today’s softened AAA titles which discourages some gamers. We see it in series like God of War and Gears of War where earlier games where tough even on easy and now their sequels can be swept through even with the difficulty turned up. There are three types of gamers now, gamers who seek challenge and gamers who just want to interact with a stunning experience and those who are both. If your looking for challenge indie is where it’s at, if you want coast through an interactive movie then trip A is all you’ll want.

  • Dragons Crown PS3!!! Makes this month awesome. :D

  • I’m so glad I held off on Fez. I’m gonna have a great time this month :)

  • WoW O_O. DC isn’t Cross Buy, yet you’r offering both versions. Cheers Sony and Thanks.

  • To all those saying they’re sick of indie games that look like 16-bit games… please stop assuming that because YOU don’t like something, everyone else in the world has to not like it either.

Sure, Sony may be relying a bit too much on indies right now, I agree, but saying that they’re not worth playing because of their graphics, is like saying a book is less interesting because there are less words in it.

Many of us are saying that games are an art form, like movies, but we all start screaming at Sony because we don’t have enough Michael Bay popcorn chompers with 3 gazzilion CGI special effect to watch. Weird.

“We didn’t buy PS4s to play indie games”. Well, first, no one forced you to buy one. If you bought a console that didn’t already have enough titles you wanted to play on it, you only have to blame yourself. Sure, it might be frustrating to see that Sony isn’t feeding its console with all the triple-AAA love it deserves, but then again, those games take time (and money) to develop, and moreso with each new generation.

Without indies, there would be a big NOTHING between major releases from big studios…

  • wow. I am thrilled. I have been waiting for metrico for months and I almost bought dragons crown for vita last week.

  • Oh sweet!! I will finally see what the Fez is all about!!! Hehe! #Crossbuy

  • Awesome lineup. Thanks, Sony!

  • I thought crysis 3 had already been free last year sometime? At least i already have it digitally downloaded unless it went on a major discount then? Other than that seems like a good time!

  • Guyz – the listed Feedback is for the wrong month, please change it. For the July update instead of June. Thanks.

  • @217 I can’t remember when but it did go on a major discount earlier this year. That’s when I got it.

  • Wow, an amazing month for Vita owners, but still really strong for PS3/PS4.

Thanks for all your hard work!

  • Whatever happen to PS2 games on Vita

  • What’s with 2 months in a row of getting the 3rd entry in a series? I feel like I can’t play Dead Space 3 because I haven’t played 1 or 2. Same with Crysis. These are also the lowest rated games in there respective series.

  • Another impressive month, I like how you guys keep mixing it up. I bought Dragon’s Crown but sold it quickly once I realized it wasn’t quite the game I thought it was going to be, but I will gladly download both versions of the game for free and give it another chance. That guy Fish is a ****** of an indie developer, but I will try his game Fez for free, regardless. And I’ll never complain about free PS4 games. I “purchase” everything free PS Plus offers so it’s in my queue and I download the games I actually want to play, so it works out for me. Keep up the quality and variety!

  • Another thing is people complaining about indies on ps4. You realize giving these other developers their time in the spotlight will bring more diverse games. This is what Sony wants as with them putting it on PS+ they know they will get reviews. Let’s let them stop recycling the same cod games and come out with something new. I say go Sony for making such a smart business move to be able to bring more exclusives to playstation thanks to the new developers that will make it for Sony for giving them their chance.

  • wow this is the great line up everybody was talking about? no interested bad games

  • PS4 gets the bad end of all this

  • I’m so tired of buying games that end up on PS Plus…

  • Been waiting to play Dragon’s Crown, another great month ahead!

  • The ps3 content look great. I’ve been wanting to try Crysis 3 for a while and a lot of my friends have been recommending it to me and Proteus was something I was eyeing just wasn’t sure if I wanted to pay for it or not. Good games to hold me over until Destiny.

  • Not really a great month for me.

Already bought the ones I wanted, though Metrico may be worth a look, and havng Dragons Crown on PS3 helps a little with the large price for the game, without it being CrossBuy.

I will be letting my Plus expire, for atleast a month, before I renew.
I will be watching for any good sales untill then.

I have to say this about PS Plus though, if you can’t afford games or the high cost of rentals, you guys are impressive to me on that end.
Sure, we may not get every game we want, or the releases are a little older, but, to me your value is close to me as Netflix.

You have been great for diversity to me, especially more recently, with a variety of games that seem more family oriented in the past (much like Netflix).

    Keep up the good work.

Now we need to get started on some of Sony’s or Sony Affiliates’ other problems.

  • Ooh my gosh, I’m puckering up my lips..making kissy sounds and heading for your cheek Sony for the Dragon’s Crown deal! I have had that on my list since it was first released and FINALLY going to get it! Thank you! And thank you Atlus!

  • Road Not Taken for me. Great list of games tho! Crysis 3 is pretty fun, Fez is great and Dragon’s Crown is superb!

  • thanks for putting dragons crown on plus right after you had it on sale i just wasted 40 bucks on both versions ! i will not be buying anymore games you put on sale this is not the first time you guys put games on sale just to turn around and give them away … sleeping dogs i got burned on that game too .. stop doing this. its not like dragons crown was on sale months ago but like last week !

  • the ps4 titles annoy me(indie games)

  • It seems like right now the choice you get for new-gen games are either high quality indies or low quality exclusives but I can understand.

The name power of the lineup isn’t great as the first one that caught my eye was Vita’s Dragon Crown (and how awesome that it is going to be for both versions even though it isn’t cross-buy?!?).

But on value side (which is what counts).. I wanted Fez and I was curious about Proteus and Road Not Taken. Ironically, the one I have the least interest in is Crysis 3 and that is the one retail title in the group. Lol. But I also have little interest in Metrico.

    All in all:
    PS4: B
    PS3: B
    PSVita: A+

    Solid month.

  • ThumbsOfSteel74 NOPE! I’m looking at my backlog right now of PS Plus games. Crysis 3 is on it.

  • So sick of crappie 8-16 bit indie games. It’s 2014 indie shouldn’t be bad retro graphics. Should be them showing big devs how to be creative with mechanics with out the rehashed over used style.

  • Hmmm…maybe I was wrong about Crysis 3. Maybe I picked it up on a sale?

  • Please let us know if we’ll get Road Not Taken on Vita as well when it’s released!

  • I really like this lineup, since not only are these games that interest me that I don’t have, but no one here is complaining about the indies here. Maybe people got the message that the console cycle just started? Maybe I’m being a bit too pessimistic, but oh well! Still really happy with this! Playstation Plus always seems to give me something to look forward to at the end of every month!

  • Wow, excellent selection of games! I already own Dragon’s Crown on PS Vita, but sounds like, from Kristine’s replies, that we’ll be getting the PS3 version as well! Proteus has been free once already, but aside from it and Dragon’s Crown, all of August’s free games will be new acquires. I’m stoked to try Fez, had fun with the demo, Road Not Taken and Metrico look excellent as well. I never finished Crysis, or played Crysis 2, but I won’t complain about a free AAA shooter from Crytek. I’ve loved all their other games. Thank you, Playstation! And thanks, Kristine!

  • Sweet. I wanted to try out Crysis 3. Dragon’s Crown for Vita is pretty sick too. PS4 offerings are pretty solid too. Looking forward to Secret Ponchos on PS4 soon.

  • I like the games this month and most of all the fact that we get versions of them for multiple consoles. Last week’s superhero sale was amazing so keep them coming. I also wish there were more sales on dlc’s and sales on older, less known games such as blue toad murder files. I want to build up my game collection but they are way too expensive on psn as it is.

  • @Nicklebag Preach! Great points I bought Rogue but I just need to get through a bit more of my backlog before I start it. Sad thing is other than Resogun I still haven’t touched because of it. I have cut down my list of backlog to must plays. (Diablo 3, Persona 4A, Fallout NV, and Dishonored)

  • AH-MAZE-ING. It’s like you read my mind.

  • No complaints here but the Monday posts we still need those. Make it a post about the weeks sales in general it was always one of the more popular posts for the month visit wise and comment wise. You gotta figure out a way to bring it back to us.
