PS Plus: Preview August’s Free Game Lineup

This month our PlayStation Plus members will receive two games free the day they release on PlayStation StoreRoad Not Taken on PS4 and Metrico on PS Vita. In addition to these titles, members will receive other popular games like Fez on PS4, Crysis 3 and Proteus on PS3 and Dragon’s Crown on PS Vita.

PS4 owners can enjoy two puzzle games with very different mechanics. First up, there’s Road Not Taken, where you’ll aim to strategically maneuver through a forest as efficiently as possible with only a limited amount of stamina, all while saving lost children. Then you can don a fancy hat in Fez, as you jump around pixelated 2D levels housed in a 3D world. Shift your view of the landscape with the hit of a button and journey to find the pieces of a Hexahedron.

On PlayStation 3, Crysis 3 offers the sandbox first-person shooter world that made the franchise famous and there’s a new toy to play with – the Predator Bow. If you enjoy multiplayer, there’s a new mode here called Hunter where two players are pitted against a team of CELL agents with the goal of slowly turning all of them into fellow Hunters. Then, there’s the soothing experience of Proteus, where you’ll explore procedurally generated islands with a dynamic soundtrack.

Finally, PlayStation Vita owners will get their hands on the highly-anticipated puzzle-platformer Metrico and critically-acclaimed action RPG Dragon’s Crown. Traverse a world filled with infographics in Metrico, but don’t be fooled by the clean presentation – proceeding through these charts isn’t as straightforward as it might seem. Invite up to three friends to join you in the dungeons of Dragon’s Crown, and thanks to Cross-Play you can even go adventuring with your buddies who have PS3s.

All of these games will be free for Plus members starting August 5th. If you want to see these titles in action, check out the video below.

  • @544 what do you mean DC “again”? I’ve had Plus since the IGC was launched and DC has *never* been offered on it, I assume you. Try harder when trolling.

Sony, overall a decent month for once. DC is the first good Vita game I’m interested in for months on end and Crysis 3 is good for those who haven’t played it yet. But we really need a take a focus off of Indies for once. I, and many others, are kinda sick of you guys at Sony shoving them down our throats as If you expect us to like them no matter what.

  • Really excited for Dragon’s Crown!

  • I should have saved the money. The ps4 gets the shaft again.

  • + Mando44646: To be fair, Dragon’s Crown was free to Plus for EU in June of this year. Not everyone makes that distinction when posting, or even knows the 2 regions have different setups. (Well, much less different now.) So perhaps that guy just got confused.

Anyway, I agree somewhat about Proteus. If you like exploring randomly generated pixel-y islands that all look the same, you’ll love this. Though I’d be up for a game where exploring was the sole purpose, but there was more to see and maybe better graphics. But then it probably wouldn’t be $5 (more or less what I paid for it.)

  • when is dragons crow coming out again? like the end of themonth. cause it’s not cool to make us wait alost a whole nother month justcause u said it wasin august doesn’t mean i want to wat three more weeks to playit… it’s the fourth now. so yeah…

  • “All of these games will be free for [NA] Plus members starting August 5th.”

  • Too bad that the far cry 3 blood dragon rumor was fake, but at least is a great month for my vita :), also cany wait for road not taken and crysis 3, thanks for a good month ;)

  • No interest in any of these. Skipping again.

  • I can’t wait to dig into these, especially Dragon’s Crown.

  • When will the game be available for download

  • Would it be possible for me to get Dragons crown and Fez for free with my PS+ membership on my PS3?

  • @559 cfeather90 Yes, Fez is cross-buy and even though Dragon’s Crown isn’t, Plus is giving out both versions on the 5th. Unless they’ve changed the store layout it might be hard to find the games from your PS3, however. The store’s “poster” layout made things clunkier, they then made it worse by not allowing you to move past the posters to select the classic layout, which shows all PS3 and PSV games together. You can find it, sort of, by going to games and then sorting by price (I think). I personally just use the web-store, (store(dot)sonyentertainmentnetwork(dot)com) which was required to reserve the PS4 game anyway. After “purchasing” from you web-browser (pc, the console browsers don’t work right) the games are added to your respective download lists.

  • I’m so sick of these damn indie games we ps4 members are getting. It’s BS, Sony you need to get it together and put some real games for us members. I didn’t upgrade from my ps3 to ps4 to play these stupid games you keep putting out to us. Quit being cheap bastards and do something worth while to us plus members or else I’m out the door with Sony for good. Damn shame how dumb and cheap a company can be. Smh Sony Smh..

  • @MR_BEATHERCHEEKS I’m sick of idiots like you begging for AAA games. The PS4 is still new the market and we didn’t get real games on the PS3 until few years later. You don’t speak for all of us. Quit being a cheap bastard yourself and actually buy the real games. Leave and don’t come back then, I won’t miss you. In fact, good riddance because you’re a plague to the gaming industry.

  • Glad I held out on Dragon’s Crown.

  • Super Awesome Month! Yet some people don’t realize why PlayStation is so much better than Xbox. I have my ps3 for about five years now and never once had to replace it while in the meantime I’ve went through 15 different xbox 360’s.

  • Also for those who are complaining about the Indie Games for ps4, apparently there were a lot off complaints about how there aren’t enough indie games so Sony is doing their best on getting a lot of indie games for ps4 and since its their largest collection of games at the moment it’s what we get for free. Also I for one am just happy that ps+ gets all these free games each month. Also they don’t charge us ps+ to play online for ps3 or psvita so in my opinion they are more than generous.

  • @560 Rpm2878. Thank you for the information. It is greatly appreciated.

  • Dragon’s CROWN, YES! I haven’t heard much about the others like road not taken but still excited to see this games!

  • So let me get this straight: Sony wants to make PS4 more popular and boost sales. I spend 400 something euros on a brand new PS4 and dish out an extra 50 each year to enjoy the benefit of playing 15 bucks worth of steam content ? If PS+ would at least include free acess to music and movies as well or at least a free album and and 2 free movies I wouldn’t feel like I was being robbed blindly, but this is just absolute bull. The PS3 is old and still gets the best titles around the shop ? That’s how Sony is making the PS4 more popular ? Wow. Whichever marketing genious they are using should be fired because he doesn’t know the first thing about promotion. Really. And btw: This was my first and will be my last year of PS+ sub. Why ? Because paying for something that is supposed to come WITH the console in the first place (network play) is not something I’m willing to pay for. As for the free games ? I’m ok with not getting any of the indie showelware titles i can buy for 5 bucks on Steam (if I wanted to).

  • @PrimeroIncognito: I’m not going to bother speculating if Cradda fits the scenario I’m about to describe, but…

There are people around here who seem to believe AAA titles should flow like water from the IGC. If they did, people would then complain about huge file sizes and long downloads (a complaint which is inevitable anyway going forward with digital full games on PS4 and beyond). They would also complain (as many do already) that they don’t have time to play them. And they already have them. Or they aren’t from a genre that person enjoys.

But more than anything, it simply wouldn’t make sense financially. They give us indies via the IGC because they can, and because millions of us are happy to have them. They supplement our purchases, and are frankly a bonus since many of us have Plus for cloud saves and discounts anyway.

I’m not sure if there is a way for people unhappy with the IGC to “improve” it. I’m quite sure Sony can’t please everyone no matter what they do. So I guess one’s only options are: asking for specific games/genres here, not downloading games you don’t want them to think you desire, and not resubscribing (or at least waiting a bit and/or choosing shorter terms).

  • When can these be downloaded?

  • If the evergreen titles setup had been maintained, or even returns, by the time “full games” could be supported for the PS4 selection, a triple-A, retail title could just squat in the Free Games section so that such a presence exists, staying around to entice Plus newcomers and not be easily missed by current subscribers, with PS4 digital-only games cycling out more frequently for the variety. There’d be complaints from those either already owners of the trip-A or tired of waiting for the next such, but it’d be /something/ of [substance/bloat] for those inclined.

  • @TJF588: Now that you mention it, I agree. The “evergreen” setup did nothing for those of us who will (probably) keep Plus regardless of what the IGC brings, and/or who grab the newest games ASAP. But they did entice newcomers, and a few AAAs for PS4 might keep some folks busy for a while. Either the games are still selling despite what we may think…or something else is going on. I just believe that if they could give away AAAs right now and entice more subscribers, they would. So we all wait until they do.

Personally, I think it’ll be a few months from now at most. Closer to the 1-year mark. And I’m curious to see how Drveclub (and the corresponding Plus version) will be received once it actually launches.

  • I haven’t visited the blog in awhile and its still a bunch of spoiled brats complaining about “free” games.

  • @LUCIFERrilo If you think they’re free you haven’t been been paying attention. You’re paying for them with your PSPlus account.

  • I’ve thought about it for a few days and I honestly think that this is the best lineup of 2014 thus far.

  • Ps3 gets better games than ps4

  • I’m really missing RPGs on PS+. I know Dragon’s Crown has RPGs elements, but it’s a beat ’em up after all. I’d love to see games like Two Worlds 2, Arcania, Risen 2, Dark Souls and even Bethesda’s games (very unlikely, though).

  • I have the same problem with Crysis 3 this month that I had with Dead Space 3 last month:

    I haven’t played the other 2.

And after making the mistake of playing the heck out of the Uncharted 2 Demo before Uncharted 1 (it made 1 feel soooooo borrrrrring) and Halo 3 before any other Halo (I had absolutely no idea what the heck was going on), I don’t plan on doing the same with Crysis.

Of course, that means I need to find some way to cough up $20 to get Crysis 1 somehow…

  • why aren’t the ps plus games out yet? don’t they all come out on the first

  • “All of these games will be free for Plus members starting August 5th.”

  • why does ps3 get better games? these games you guys give ps4 are pure trash and should be on the vita. playstation needs to step their game u, we pay all this money for these garbage 2D games? you guys can’t be serious and this playstation now is completely useless offering games you can’t even buy or even find in a store

  • Its August and my ps4 and ps3 still have the July line up in the ps+ instant game selection? whats going on?

  • Oh my bad -_- August 5th.

  • @LUCIFERrillo

Yep. Still a buttload of whiners

  • This month sucks with all the indie games no one cares about i love my PS4 since i switched from xbox 360 but at least they offered good games

  • I’m about to trade my ps4 for an XBOX ONE not a Big fan of indies at all yosheda said he doesn’t get Gamers who only want Triple A Games well I don’t get him but Microsoft seems like they understand what Gamers want they didn’t last year but this year and the future looks good for Microsoft wheil sony seems to want to push VR and Game streaming Microsoft looks like they want to push Games Big Budget Games.not indie trash

  • The creator of Fez Phil fish is a Bigit and ass whole I would never saport Fez

  • @ThumbsOfSteel74

Yep. Exactly. What are all these idiots expecting for $50 per year?

As long as indies exist, they’ll be part of the IGC. Period. Why? Two BIG reasons:

    1. Financially. Because indies represent the smaller investment pieces that Sony needs to support the model without going over budget. And they need to stay within budget if they want to maintain the attractive $50 entry fee, which itself was settled on because it falls directly in the middle of the comfort zone for subscription services, established by consumers themselves over the years. Constant AAAs would not enable this to continue. Themes, avatars, and minis used to be in the spot that indies now occupy.

    2. Diversity. Believe it or not, whiners, PS+ wasn’t designed around you, specifically. (GASP!) Since Sony is a massive corporation with millions of potential customers in their target audience, they need to offer a variety of flavors to keep EVERYONE happy/interested. Being a Sony customer is NOT like being a member of an elite club. You WON’T always get what you want. Get used to it, or get out.

  • I think that dragon’s crown should be cross buy their is no reason it shouldn’t be. But other than that not a bad month although i think on the PS4 we should get one retail game and one indie title but i see why they are going for indie. I would like to see either killzone or knack on the list cause they are launch titles and have already sold enough.

  • I almost bought Dragons Crown. GEEKED!!!

  • The only reason I’m not happy with this month’s offerings is because I wanted to actually buy Road Not Taken. Other than that I’m perfectly happy with this month.

  • i wish we could get the games ps3 is having for the ps4 the arcade games are kinda getting tiresome :/

  • Just so I’m 100% clear; Dragon’s Crown is available for PS3 owners, right?

  • Uhhh….you guys do realize that the store (including PS Plus free games) always updates on Tuesday, right? It’s ALWAYS been that way. Sheesh, little children, stop your whining. It is really quite unbecoming, and makes us PlayStation fans look bad.

  • Another month, another set of complains from people who complain they aren’t getting their $50(and in some cases lower) worth of value from games over a year due to a selection’s month of games. People complain about how they usually have the games offered through Plus, but when Sony offers 2 games on Plus that are debuting in Plus on Plus the same date they are released, people complaining is ridiculous!

I was a happy subscriber when you offered 1 PSN, 1 PSX, and 2 Minis per month free, and I’m happier now! Love the AAA & Indie games offered! A great game is a great game No matter the budget or size of the development team!

Sony you are doing a FANTASTIC job in variety of free content in each month and last month’s discounts were even better! My only request is to work with your retail partners and lower the price of the Vita Memory Cards. Also please bring the 64GB Vita card to America.

  • Frankly, I wouldn’t mind a return to the Plus of old: PS1 Classics, themes, avatars, minis, etc. They’re never going to please everyone anyway, though maybe the current setup pleases more than the old one did? Who knows.

Oddly, I think this blog could do with a bit *more* complaining…though it’s probably not what you think: NA IGC is now almost identical to EU IGC. Not everyone was unhappy with the old setup. To whatever extent the changes were due to pleas found here, perhaps those who liked what they got before should have been more vocal.

Maybe I’m just making a call for specifics: At the very least, we should all state exactly what we like/don’t like and what should reasonably be done about it. Otherwise it’s all a lot of mindless complaining (and mindless praise) signifying nothing.

  • PS1 and PS2 classics on the Plus line-up would be really cool…. I am loving what they give out so far (at least on the Big Picture scheme of things) but one or 2 ps classics every other month wolud be a great adition

  • The survey has a different list of games, apparently from last month, according to some of the above commenters. But for the life of me I don’t remember Trine 2: The Complete Story being a PS Plus freebie. I download every PS Plus game I’m entitled to every month and I don’t recall that being on the list. Maybe it was a freebie in a different region (I’m in Canada). If I did indeed miss out, that really sucks, don’t know how I let that one get by me.

It’s August 5th now, so I suppose the new goodies will drop on Wednesday…
