Major PS4 System Update Out Tomorrow, Updates for PS Vita and PS App

At PlayStation, we love hearing the great feedback we get from our passionate community of gamers. That’s why I’m excited to announce that our highly-anticipated system software update for PlayStation 4 (v1.70) will be released tomorrow, with a huge number of your demanded features, and expanding upon what we believe is the most socially connected console experience. One feature that I’m most excited about is SHAREfactory, our new rich video editing app. In addition, we’re launching updates for PlayStation Vita (v3.15) and PlayStation App (v1.70) that will deliver greater integration with your PS4 system.

Here’s a rundown of what you can expect with tomorrow’s software updates:

PlayStation 4 v1.70 Update

  • SHAREfactory: After you update your PS4 to v1.70, an icon to download our free SHAREfactory app will appear on your PS4 system’s home screen once it’s available. Once installed, SHAREfactory allows you to easily customize your gameplay videos with special effects, video commentary with picture-in-picture capability through PlayStation Camera, and custom soundtracks using the included audio tracks or your original music imported from a USB drive. You can then share your videos on Facebook or export them to an external USB storage device. The app is packed with plenty of cool, but accessible, tools. It’s simple enough to use for beginning editors, while functioning as a rich video editor for those with more creative aspirations. Check out our new SHAREfactory video that provides a walkthrough of what you can expect:

  • Automatic Pre-download: No more waiting until after a game is released to start downloading select pre-ordered games from PlayStation Store. This new feature allows you to get to your games faster by automatically downloading select pre-ordered games up to several days in advance of the release, so that it’s ready to play as soon as the game is released on launch day. There’s also a countdown timer prior to the release of the game so you’ll know how soon your game will be available for you to start playing.
  • Option to Disable HDCP for Games: This highly requested feature will allow you to have the option to turn off HDCP for games so you can capture longer gameplay sessions directly from your HDMI output and export them elsewhere.
  • USB Export Option for Captured Gameplay: It’s now even easier to show off your heroic gaming moments and the SHAREfactory videos you create with the world using this feature to export your videos and screenshots to a USB drive. Just click on the DUALSHOCK 4 SHARE button, save your gameplay on a USB drive, and then share your proudest achievements on other social networks and other video platforms.
  • Live Broadcasting in HD and Archiving Support: We’ve increased the resolution for live broadcasts so you and your friends can watch games livestreamed in 720p HD. You can also archive your broadcasts on Twitch or Ustream and watch them again later.
  • New SHARE Options: We’ve got a number of new SHARE settings that will give you better control of what you want to share with your friends. Here is what you can look forward to:
    • Change the default gameplay recording time in the SHARE menu under Video Clip Settings.
    • Save only the video clips and screenshots you want by selecting Upload Screenshots or Upload Video Clips for each capture. Also upload video clips and screenshots during your live gameplay broadcasts.
    • Select specific Facebook audiences to share each video or screenshot with.
  • New DUALSHOCK 4 Options: New light bar settings have been added for DUALSHOCK 4, allowing you to change it to Bright, Medium or Dim in the Settings menu. The touchpad has also been updated, allowing you to navigate the on-screen keyboard using the DUALSHOCK 4 touchpad.
  • New Friends Options: It’s now easier to find Friends and send requests with the ability to search Friends-of-Friends, view Mutual Friends on another user’s profile, and accept Friend requests directly from the Friends list.
  • New Trophies Sort Option: You can now sort Trophies by rarity in the Options menu.
  • PlayStation Store Payment Support: Similar to PS3, we’re introducing Alternative Payment Methods (APMs) for PS4 for content purchased on PS Store, starting with PayPal support.
  • More PlayStation Camera Commands: More voice commands are added to PlayStation Camera, allowing you to launch the apps installed on your PS4 with the sound of your voice.
  • New PlayStation Plus Icon: For Plus members, you’ll now have the PS Plus icon appear next to your SEN ID on the login screen, home screen and other areas across the PS4 system’s sleek user interface.
  • Music Unlimited SHARE Options: With a Music Unlimited subscription, you can easily share your favorite songs with your friends by pressing the SHARE button on your DUALSHOCK 4.

PlayStation Vita v3.15 Update

  • PS4 Link Update for Remote Play: Linking your PS4 and PS Vita together will now be easier with the 3.15 update for PS Vita. It’ll enable Automatic Device Registration, which will automatically detect and pair both systems when they’re both online and the same user is signed in to both devices. This makes it even quicker for you to get started on Remote Play or access other second screen features.

PlayStation App v1.70 Update

  • Push Notifications, Friend Requests and More: This new PlayStation app update will give you the option to receive Push Notifications for select PS4 updates you want to receive, such as gameplay Invitations, Game Alerts or Friend Requests. You can also receive Friend Requests via email or text messages with the app update. Also, it’s now easier to change your profile picture right from your mobile device by uploading an image from your photo library, or taking a photo using your in-device camera.

I’ve covered a lot of the key updates in the post, and additional details can be found here.

We can’t wait until the software updates are released so you can start enjoying all of these great features. In particular, I look forward to seeing your SHAREfactory videos and seeing all the creative ways you can make your gameplay moments memorable.

Let’s keep the conversation going – we love getting feedback from you and seeing what else we can come up with to continue making PlayStation 4 the best place to play. Please let us know and we’ll continue to always serve up great content and features to you – the gamer.

  • Loving this new update so far! Thank you Sony! Keep up the great work of listening to us and adding the features we ask for :)

  • Is the paypal payment u.s. only? Im in canada and im having trouble finding the option.

  • I would love for blu-ray 3D DVD playback so it can replace my PS3 as the family entertainment center.

  • Nobody gives an F about these system updates if it does not allow us to use our own music.

Whoever is in charge of these useless updates are mindless morons.

  • Keep up the GREAT WORK SONY!!!! Proud PS4 owner!!!! Can’t wait until next system update as this system will keep on getting better and better!!!!!

  • Sooo… can I play 3D blu ray any time soon? How about network media streaming? These were things i could do on my PS3… what gives?

  • Any news on a fix to the crashes/errors that people have been experiencing post update?

  • Still no DLNA and/or Media Player?

  • Share Factory is a good idea, but until Sony forces developers to be open about which games won’t record sound, I’m not going to shut up. I’ve already bought 2 games that I really looked forward to streaming but instead my friends were greeted with silent footage. It’s pointless to promote “sharing” as much as Sony does if half the titles can’t even be fully shared. Be open about this Sony!

  • It’s great to see an option to dim the light bar on the Dualshock 4. Also happy that Remote Play is being improved. Keep up the great work, Sony!

  • A gif maker could be a nifty idea :)

  • The new PlayStation App update made it so you can’t listen to music while the app is open. Can that be fixed please?

  • MP3 SUPPORT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I needed it yesterday on my PS4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    DLAN would be nice also!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Getting error WS-37504-9 and NW-31194-8 after 1.70 update. Can’t play any games correctly!

  • Yes me too getting the error WS-37504-9 on PS4
    Please sony fix this

  • hey, guys! c’mon! we deserve, at least, those 3 features:
    1: pause/resume
2: organizing games/apps as we wish
    3: friends on/offline notification

    any news on that?

  • Error on PS4 WS-37504-9
1.70update cause a lot problem”s now please sony look in to this thank you.

  • Love all the added features in the latest update and I love the new video editing application. It’s an exciting time to be a PS4, PS Vita owner. I can’t believe how good remote play is. Keep up the great work and thank you to all the team.

  • 3D Blu Ray Playback soon pleeeeease

  • Please:

    1. Let us have different backrounds, and themes, fonts, etc.
    2. The notification windows are ugly change that. ugh.
    3. Tapping the ‘PS’ button ONCE should show the controller battery level.
    4. I saw a video about how much battery this light consumes and I would like to turn it completely off. That is, unless it is barely consuming any power then this concern is irrelevant.

Fix these issues please Playstation I appreciate it!

  • Your heart was in the right place, Sony, but a manual HDCP toggle is still a significant inconvenience for people who use the same PS4 console for watching video apps and for capturing gameplay footage. It would be really nice if, in the next update, HDCP could be automatically enabled for things that require it (Netflix, Blu-Ray, etc) and disabled for everything else, without requiring user intervention.

Still, this is an improvement over how it was before, being entirely impossible to disable HDCP for games, so I can’t complain too much.

  • Have a better PS+ offering for PS4! One PS4 game for May? And let PS3 games play on PS4 on + and physical copies.

  • if you haven’t yet, can you please try and fix the playstation freezing in standby mode because when it happens the only way to turn my playstation on is to unplug the AC power cord. I am worried that i might wreck my playstation if this keeps happening to me so please try to fix this from happening. It happened when i put my playstation in standby mode over night while downloading a game, I’ve tried downloading a game over night a few times and my playstation has froze both those times… please help me with another software update that may fix this.

  • Will there be premium avatars for ps4 and PS Vita soon?

  • Awesome update! As you guys always say that you listen to our feedback, please try to add the following things asap:

    – YouTube app
    – YouTube share support
    – Media Playback from USB (music, photos, videos)
    – Folders/Sub-folders to organize apps and games
    – Notifications for friends going online and offline
    – Quick way to check the dualshock’s battery life (with time remaining
    – A list of our most visited/favourite apps and games
    – Ability to pause and stop downloads so I can download my preferred game/app first
    – Flash player on browser
    – Using touchpad an the ui and in the browser as a mouse

I know i’m not the only one who wants these features to come to the ps4, there are many more things to add. You guys have listened so far, so consider these as well! Thanks Sony!

  • My ps4 keeps having error problems after I installed the new update 1.70

  • So, you did this for the Ps4. How about us Ps3 guys? Can you give us the option to disable HDCP? Pretty please Sony, pretty please

  • First off, thank you so much for the updates and all of the hard work everyone put in to making the PS4 even better! I am VERY much enjoying my new PS4 and I can’t wait to see what else you guys have in store for us! I do have a few things I would like to see…hopefully sooner rather than later:

    1. YouTube app with 4k video support
    2. 4k movie downloads…Sony said they were going to offer them, but things have gotten VERY quiet lately. Are they still coming?
    3. DLNA would be nice :)
    4. MP3 support and the ability to play them within the games
    5. Touchpad should be able to control the cursor in the web browser
    6. Web browser should have a “smooth zoom” similar to the PS3’s zoom, not just 3 stages that it cycles through
    7. PS1 and PS2 emulation for disc based games and digital downloads (PS1 emulation should be easy with this much power, PS2 emulation would be nice, but not as important to me)

  • I did the update and now my ps4 can’t read my hdmi cable connection. WTF

  • Accidentally hit “post” before I was done! Was going to say that I feel 4k support for videos is EXTREMELY important! You guys made Blu-Ray a standard by including it in the PS3, adding 4k video support (in YouTube as well as PSN downloads) would get a LOT of sales from people buying the new TVs and will also gain you TV sales from PS4 owners! This should be a priority for you guys! I have been telling people that the first 4k players are probably going to be PS4s…please don’t keep us waiting for this! You have a VERY short window to make the PS4 the preferred 4k player, don’t wait too long!

  • Not sure if its already been mentioned but if possible it would be nice to allow those that are watching a live broadcast to hear the music that is being played through your music unlimited application instead of the games BGM and SFX.

  • Will you guys make an update that allows us to change our PSN names?

  • Viewing Friends List & Trophy Collection, along with PS+ Online Storage are all acting up ever since 1.70.

PS4 Feature Wishlist (From MOST to LEAST Wanted)

    – Custom Wallpaper/Backgrounds using our personal images(Just Like PS3)
+ Custom Profile picture straight from the PS4 with our images on the HDD like on the NEWEST firmware of the PlaySation App.
    – Media Storage(MP3, Images and Videos)
    – Email App(Like PS Vita, surely this wouldn’t be difficult to integrate)
    – Flash Player for the Internet Browser
    – YouTube App+ Upload/Share to YouTube

    Thank You Very Much

  • SCEA / Sony,

Remote play is broken in my eyes. I can no longer play PS4 games on my Vita anywhere near as efficiently as I once was able to.

I was very excited to get home and update my PS4 and Vita for a better remote play experience. Unfortunately, to my complete surprise the button mapping has changed to something more akin to a smart phone interface. Unhappy with the new default setting, I go to change the button mapping back to the original setup that utilizes the rear touch panel…yet that option is not there.

Why did you take away features? Why were users not notified of this change before updating? I hope this was an oversight and a fix to restore original default button mapping is on its way. My thumbs are now responsible for 4 additional buttons while I have 3 other fingers doing nothing.

Please allow us to decide which configuration works for us and don’t force this sort of change on your users.

Please, when adding new features, styles, configurations, do not discard old ones that your customers may actually be using.

    Thanks,

    Angry Customer.

  • Thanks for your work but that “Sharing thing” isn’t a big point for me.

    My PS4 wishlist:

    1. DLNA (both ways)
    2. Abillity to delete games in the Trophy-List
    3. Perhaps a MP3 Player

But … please give me DLNA ….

  • I just want an HDCP removal for the PS3, I can’t afford a ps4. Give me HDCP removal for the PS3 so that I can stream my gameplay with out a redneck set up.

  • If we’re talking about Vita updates, how about re-enabling PSP and PSOne Classic downloads and playability on ALL titles?

    Because we know it’s possible……

  • Really good update and I love that you can add pictures to your profile from your phone now. The one thing that I would want in another update is for the profile to be able to be a GIF. It would make the profiles a lot more creative!

  • lolz Sony = Sillys!!!

  • ///PLEASE READ SONY/// If you really value your customers please just give us the option to put our own music and videos from a usb onto our PS4 system. The PS3 which is older has this feature which makes the PS4 feel like **** sometimes when it doesn’t have features its predecessor has.

Please just give us this feature back and the system will be all-in-one machine!

Im sure all my fellow PS4 owners feel the same way about this.

    Thank You!

  • I’m loving this ps4 update. Man…. I love you sony… God knows I do!! I love you soo much!

  • This update has caused too many problems. After the update my screen flickered and went black continuously and the sound came in and out. Searching the forums showed that this has been a common problem after the update and can be resolved by disabling the Deep Color option under video (if you can see the screen for long enough to navigate to!) but we need all these bugs fixed now. A company like Sony should not be releasing new system software that renders the hardware unusable and forces the user to spend hours searching for a workaround. Never had this issue in all my years with the PS3..
