Update: PS4 system software update 1.70 is confirmed to land in North America on April 30th.
As we mentioned last month during GDC, we’ll be releasing a major system software update for PS4 that will add some exciting new features that many of you have been asking for. Today, I’m pleased to announce a few of those features from PS4 system software update (v1.70) will be available soon, including features that were incorporated as a result of your great feedback. This will be a significant update, and today we’re excited to bring you a sneak peek of just a few things you can look forward to.
Introducing: SHAREfactory
The 1.70 update will enable SHAREfactory, our new rich video editor app for PS4 that makes it easy for you to customize your gameplay videos:
With SHAREfactory, you can now easily combine your captured video clips for editing, personalize them with special effects using filters, transitions, and themes, as well as share them with your friends and social networks. SHAREfactory also allows you to personalize your videos by adding text, stickers, and a set of included audio tracks, as well as video commentary with picture-in-picture capability with PlayStation Camera. It also allows you to import your original music to add to the custom soundtrack for your video.
Share With the World
Once you’re done with your masterpiece, you can easily share your SHAREfactory videos to Facebook, or export them to an external USB storage device to upload them elsewhere, another new feature coming as part of the 1.70 system software update. Other PS4 SHARE enhancements include the ability to change the recording time of your gameplay to shorter increments, the ability to change who you share your clips with on the SHARE screen, and the removal of default saves for screenshots and video clips. In addition to these SHARE enhancements, the 1.70 update will allow you switch off HDCP, enabling you to capture video directly from your HDMI output so you can record and share longer clips of your gameplay sessions — a feature I know many of you have been waiting for. We are excited to see what the PlayStation Nation does with these new social features, and cannot wait to get them into your hands!
Play as Soon as the Game is Released
Providing you with immediate access to your games is a priority designed into PS4, and something we will always strive to make better. We’ve had a great response from PS4 fans about the Play as You Download feature, the snappy load times when launching and playing games, and the general speed and responsiveness of the UI. The 1.70 update adds features to build on this idea and make it faster to play the games you pre-order with an auto pre-download capability, which allows you to pre-download your select pre-ordered game up to several days prior to release. If you have the auto-download feature enabled, it will automatically pre-download your pre-ordered game so you can play as soon as the game is unlocked on release day.
As I mentioned earlier, some of these features were a direct result of the great feedback we’ve been getting from you, our dedicated gamer community. We enjoy listening to your comments, and encourage you to continue sharing your thoughts with us. And this is just the beginning. We’ve got a lot more coming in PS4 system software update v1.70 and beyond. The PS4 experience will constantly evolve, and new innovative ideas can come from anywhere to ensure the platform continues to deliver the best in gaming and entertainment every time you turn it on.

Still no update regarding sub-accounts on the PS4?
Please give us the access to remove all the restrictions on sub-accounts or allow us to promote them to a master account.
Sucks that am over 18 years of age yet can’t use 90% of the feature of the PS4 because my sub-account in my primary account.

Improve the appearance of the Trophy list, the icons are far too small and please remove the lines between each game, it looks so bland n boring compared to PS3/Vita.
Give us ability to look at our Trophies offline and whether we WANT to sync or not, you have just assumed we want to sync every SINGLE time we open the trophy list.
PLEEEEEEEASE for the love of GOD fix the Store and Trophy list bug that exits me to the very top/1st game of the Trophy list/Store page so I have to scroll ALLLLLL the way back down to where I was.
It’s so annoying.
In a future PS4 update, I would like to see the ability to back up the PS4 to a external USB hard drive. Not just game saves, but the entire systems database.
Here’s what I would like to see added:
-Swap places for the “Send Name Request” and everything else currently under it when viewing a Friends Profile. I always accidentally hit that and it’s extremely annoying.
– A Pause option when Downloading or Updating games
– Customizable Controller Chime when a player logs on. Almost like a Ringtone you set specifically for someone, that way you know who it is. (So like my cousin Alex loves Uncharted, so maybe the beginning of the Uncharted theme for his chime/notification coming out of the controller.)
– Love the UI on PS4, doesn’t need to be heavily changed
– Ability to Manually move the image “blocks” in the Main UI to where you want them. (I would want all the game’s I play most first, but I sometimes use Netflix, but I don’t want that to be in front of everything because I used it, I want it to be after the games, the way I want it)
– Ability to see ScreenShots and Trophies when I’m Offline.
– Ability to Hide Trophies, some games I have say 0% or 1% and I don’t want to see them

This is kinda random, but for Remote Play PS4/VITA, is there any way there can be some sort of easy setup for home use in the future? I was thinking a Windows/Mac/Linux program that would make your router/home network Remote Play ready.
For ease of use of course. If not that, I wouldn’t mind a more hands on program that could test what was wrong, or give you feedback. Say, this is why Remote Play isn’t working…etc etc etc. Just a thought. Cause I know over the internet, getting your UPNP support and correct ports opened up on both ends is often a pain.
And I’m tech savy. I couldn’t imagine how frustrating this could be for other individuals that heard about this awesome feature. Cause it truly is awesome!
A way to add (Shortcut inputs) to ANY app or PS4 functionality (or at least 4 o 5 of the most frequented ones).
Say once I push home, and I’m on the Home screen, I can just push a button and bring up my friend’s list, or my inbox, stuff like that.
With all of the recent worldwide success of the PS4, I can’t wait for all the system update goodies (and not to mention games and peripherals) to come in the near future :) especially MP3/DLNA support and VR!! Keep up the great work Sony!
Im still waiting for word on other featured announced that we havent seen yet during the PS4 unveiling like being able to see what everyone on your friend list is laying live without them having to broadcast it on twitch and being able to take over your friends game from your own home/system or will these two features be features that were mentioned but never see the light of day?

Ooooh yeah, please allow us to copy the content of the ps4 whenever I want to upgrade my HDD to 2tb.
Also, please work in conjunction with any of those hdd seller companies to create a 2tb hdd for the ps4.

Not one to look a gift horse in the mouth or feel entitled, because of my consistent loyalty to the Playstation brand, BUT! It would really make the PS4 the greatest console of all time if these updates could be included in a future update:
1. Playstation One Disc support.
2. Playstation Two DVD support.
3. Transferring of PSone/Pstwo digital classics on PSN.
I regularly play my PSone/Two games to this day – I have a great library built up over the years. If PS4 gets native support for those two systems, it will become the dominant console in my living room space.
EVEN better
4. The ability to Remote Play PS2 classics to the Vita.

While it looks like many people are excited about added features, I’m not. I like it the way it is. Whil eyou look to add requested features, can I request that for every feature added, if possible add an ability to disable that feature. For example, Friends notification, I like that it doesn’t popup when friends come online, I like this on PS4 over PS3. If I could disable it, I would have it how I like t, and others could have ti how they like it.

Why do you all want all these non-gaming features? The PS4 is a games console. You all have different devices that can play music while you play a game etc.. I hope Sony focuses on adding GAMING related updates to the PS4, not all this non-gaming fluff.
PS1 emulator for discs and digital? Also a PS2 emulator for disc and digital.
Allow use of a dualshock 3, sure it won’t work on some games without the touchpad, but for games that don’t use it, it would be great for the two people in the world that prefers the dualshock 3.

Oh and this is very important to me, add an option for the PS4 to auto shutdown from standby mode once it’s done uploading save files and downloading stuff. My PS4 is in my bedroom and the standby light irks the **** out of me.

I moved to EU but i dont want to start a new PSN profile just to be able to buy stuff etc.
atm i am not able to use some DLC codes from EU bought games cause some are tied to the account that downloaded them.
Im also aving to play FFXIV on my EU created account because i cant use it on my american PSN.
i do hope we get DLNA . if there isnt MP3 playback i can atleast stream it from PC aswell as my videos.

Great so glad we’ll be able to download before the release date. Being on the East coast and games being available at midnight on the west coast sucks so it’ll be good to be able to download when the the servers aren’t getting hit so hard. Any word on Youtube and HBO GO?

Wishlist Part 1:
1. Organization for games and videos and whatnot. I have a ridiculous number of games and videos on my PS3, and it would be completely unmanageable without folders. My PS4 already has enough stuff that I’m starting to feel the pain. Maybe just like there’s a row of icons over the the main app-and-game row that’s used to access settings and trophies and the store and other things like that, there could be a row of user-defined tiles below the main row that open up like folders, or panels of tiles, and let us organize games into categories? Some kind of solution here is essential.
2. DLNA, other streaming, the ability to play media files off SD cards and external drives. This is one of the main things I use my PS3 for other than gaming, and I want it for my PS4.
3. Theming / dynamic themes. Microsoft did something interesting with their new Windows Phone update — you can replace the main default background color with a picture, and tiles look like they’re floating over the picture. But cooler and more interesting things should be possible on the PS4 without sacrificing usability. Animated tiles? Animated backgrounds? Tiles that look like elements appropriate to the theme?
Will it be possible to share screenshots and video clips with PSN Friends, without uploading to social media?
Wishlist Part 2:
4. Better voice control — more commands, more flexibility. (E.g. “Playstation, run Netflix”, “Playstation, start Netflix”, “Playstation, launch Netflix”, “Playstation, show me who’s online”, etc.)
5. Bluray remote. Either the PS3 remote or (ideally) a much better-designed, more ergonomic one. (Or both.) It would be great if it could control more types of equipment, too. Right now, the remote for my Panasonic TV is packed away because my Bluray remote can handle most of its functions, but I need to keep a separate remote for my sound bar around because the Bluray remote doesn’t support it. That’s a minor irritation, but it’s nonetheless one that irritates me every single day.
6. More comprehensive external and internal storage options. I’ve also read that 2TB internal drives aren’t working, but I want every shred of space I can get! I know the default 500GB isn’t going to last long.
Wishlist Part 3:
7. More built-in sharing options. The new SHAREfactory update looks AWESOME, but as essential as it is, “export to USB” is a workaround for YouTube uploading, not a solution in and of itself. If I can edit something right there on the PS4, I want to be able to post it right there on the PS4 too, and that means a lot more than just Facebook.
8. Some kind of friend organization feature, such as the ability to put a note on a friend’s profile (well, on the profile I see) mentioning where I met him or her, or the ability to tag friends (e.g. with where I met them, the clan(s) we’re in, etc.) and then see a list of friends with a given tag.
All that said, I’m really looking forward to seeing what else you guys do in the future! Keep up the great work!
This update sounds great! I hop 3D Blu-ray playback and external (USB) storage support are coming soon.
What about the limit of 15 min. videos? Is it still there, or is it possible to record from one end to another by pressing the share button?
the guy that’s been replying to comments has been curving all the questions about mp3’s. just tell us if its coming or not. stop beating around the bush like its a big surprise.

How about adding some filters or categories to Live from Playstation? It’s starting to get really cluttered in there.
– Maybe a sorting filter for Language, Genre, Camera/No Camera, New Releases, ESRB rating, etc.
– Perhaps a link from a game’s page in the PS Store to “Watch Current Livestreams”
– Search by game(and maybe a separate page for Playroom…)
– Events! I would love to see Sony and other developers start hosting events for things like:
– Showing off new games or official Launch Day streams
– Q&A sessions with developers, voice actors, execs like Shuhei, and other industry people
– Competitions(ie Fighting/Sports games, or other games that can be played on one screen)
– Celebrity ‘Lets Plays’, giveaways, and other various shenanigans
Lots of possibilities for the Live from PlayStation app – as I’m sure you know since you created it – and it’ll be interesting to see how it evolves. Honestly, I didn’t think I would use it much, but I have enjoyed watching streams and chatting a bit.
