Update: PS4 system software update 1.70 is confirmed to land in North America on April 30th.
As we mentioned last month during GDC, we’ll be releasing a major system software update for PS4 that will add some exciting new features that many of you have been asking for. Today, I’m pleased to announce a few of those features from PS4 system software update (v1.70) will be available soon, including features that were incorporated as a result of your great feedback. This will be a significant update, and today we’re excited to bring you a sneak peek of just a few things you can look forward to.
Introducing: SHAREfactory
The 1.70 update will enable SHAREfactory, our new rich video editor app for PS4 that makes it easy for you to customize your gameplay videos:
With SHAREfactory, you can now easily combine your captured video clips for editing, personalize them with special effects using filters, transitions, and themes, as well as share them with your friends and social networks. SHAREfactory also allows you to personalize your videos by adding text, stickers, and a set of included audio tracks, as well as video commentary with picture-in-picture capability with PlayStation Camera. It also allows you to import your original music to add to the custom soundtrack for your video.
Share With the World
Once you’re done with your masterpiece, you can easily share your SHAREfactory videos to Facebook, or export them to an external USB storage device to upload them elsewhere, another new feature coming as part of the 1.70 system software update. Other PS4 SHARE enhancements include the ability to change the recording time of your gameplay to shorter increments, the ability to change who you share your clips with on the SHARE screen, and the removal of default saves for screenshots and video clips. In addition to these SHARE enhancements, the 1.70 update will allow you switch off HDCP, enabling you to capture video directly from your HDMI output so you can record and share longer clips of your gameplay sessions — a feature I know many of you have been waiting for. We are excited to see what the PlayStation Nation does with these new social features, and cannot wait to get them into your hands!
Play as Soon as the Game is Released
Providing you with immediate access to your games is a priority designed into PS4, and something we will always strive to make better. We’ve had a great response from PS4 fans about the Play as You Download feature, the snappy load times when launching and playing games, and the general speed and responsiveness of the UI. The 1.70 update adds features to build on this idea and make it faster to play the games you pre-order with an auto pre-download capability, which allows you to pre-download your select pre-ordered game up to several days prior to release. If you have the auto-download feature enabled, it will automatically pre-download your pre-ordered game so you can play as soon as the game is unlocked on release day.
As I mentioned earlier, some of these features were a direct result of the great feedback we’ve been getting from you, our dedicated gamer community. We enjoy listening to your comments, and encourage you to continue sharing your thoughts with us. And this is just the beginning. We’ve got a lot more coming in PS4 system software update v1.70 and beyond. The PS4 experience will constantly evolve, and new innovative ideas can come from anywhere to ensure the platform continues to deliver the best in gaming and entertainment every time you turn it on.
We’ll have more information to share about new upcoming features for this major system software update as the release approaches, so stay tuned!
A few things I would like to see in no specific order:
1. Fix the share button so it works correctly. Half the time it does not record the last 15 minutes of gameplay and will just record some random footage instead.
2. Allow the user to set the amount of time it records from only 15 to 15, 10, 5 , 2 minutes. Most of the time when something cool happens that I want to share it only occurs in the last few minutes so I don’t need the entire 15 minutes of gameplay. I know users can trim the clip but it’s a hassle when users just want to immediately share something.
3. Having the controller make a sound when starting recording and a different sound when it ending recording. Also a small icon that stays on screen while recording. Right now it’s confusing to know when it is actually recording.
4. Allow direct uploading to YouTube. Users understand that they can save to a USB and then upload anywhere. The problem is that this is just one extra unnecessary step that users do not want to have to take.
5. Trophy sorting.
6. Automatically connect to previously used wifi networks. LAN PARTIES!
7. The option to pause/resume downloads and uploads. Do I really have to even ask this?
Will you guys be fixing the “Share” button issue where the playstation does not record the last 15 minutes of gameplay when pressed, but rather a random video clip (usually from earlier that day when the game was first loaded?)
Almost 100% of the people on my friends list are experiencing this.
For example:
When playing Call of Duty: Ghosts you have a great game that you want to share with friends so you press the “Share” button, it takes you to the videos folder for Call of Duty:Ghosts and lo’ and behold the most recent saved video in that folder is from some random game earlier that day.
The playstation manual specifically states “Press and release the share button to save a replay of the last 15 minutes of gameplay” so something isn’t right here. =(
I’ve lost many awesome double KEM strike videos because of this, and the only workaround I’ve found is to double press the share button to start a recording each and every map that loads, but this completely defeats the purpose of having a DVR feature built in.
I will like to see in a update some mp3 support with a CD or a USB. But this update is nice

So good you guys listen to the fans and users. I am happy with these changes and updates, but my biggest wish is to change just the color of the background, make it black or dark blue, so simple. I don’t even know why people begging to add dynamic themes (I didn’t really like any of them on PS3) but the simple customization is really important, at least changing the color of the background, fonts etc. Then the YouTube app, it should be there because the browser is not able to play 90% of those videos. And DLNA is so damn useful for me, it’s a pity that PS4 doesn’t have it and it keeps many people to stay with their PS3’s, just because of that. And finally, the notifications of your friends signing in, where they are? At first I thought that the favourite friends list is made especially to show you notes if they are online, but no and that’s strange. So you are great guys, love the PS4, sorry for my bad english (not my native language) and keep it up!

What about Blu-Ray 3D? I would say that’s much more important!
Really love the digital preload feature! That would be an amazing experience. A question though: when will you add an upcoming AAA titles to PS Store? Where is Watch Dogs? Wolfenstein? My only guess is that you’re having some troubles with third parties to add their titles in the store. And I do hope that it will be resolved soon and I would be able to preorder and then preload digital copies of amazing games instead of going to a store!

Pre-loading pre-orders is huge. I wish this was in place for Infamous.
I hope this applies to Child of Light so I don’t need to wait for the PS Store update to play my pre-purchased copy.
It baffles me that we keep getting these updates (which are great, don’t get me wrong) but we still don’t have something as basic as to be able to pause/resume downloads/updates…
Great update , whats missing that i want most is MP3 Playback , an option to save pics from the web browser, folder for images and notifications for when friends sign on.
I only use 2 out of the bunch of various video apps on PS4, but I have to wade through ALL of the video apps to get to the 2 I use every time I go to use them. Being able to prioritize that app list, or even delete unused apps, would be helpful.
Regarding the dynamic themes. A “previously on PS4” showing off in the background your individual recent adventures in games, activities in apps and so on. Of course one could choose to mute the whole endeavor if wanted. Nice!
Can you guys separate games and apps in their own section? Also some organization like alphabetic order and if i delete a demo then it should not stay in my library.
I don’t know if anyone at Sony will see this post but some features I was hoping to see in the future;
1. Custom voice commands; provide us with an app or system setting that allows us to program our own commands for the PS4’s interface and extend into PS Store. example; allow me to program my system to respond to “Sony” instead of “Playstation”… it’s easier and quicker to say “Sony”. This can extend as far as linking a Voice Pattern to each PS4 setting. Path of least resistance.
2. More voice commands; Send voice message to friend. View/Join a friend. Start Party Chat – invite friends, turn on/off PS camera, check for updates, Sign in/out PSN…
3 Voice command macros; When system hears the words; “Playstation”…”Infamous” – I would program it to automatically include the “Start” command then the game “Infamous: Second Son”. Maybe a player would like to tell his PS4 to start a party chat, invite is clan members to the chat room simply by saying; “Playstation”…”Clan Meeting”

What about the Bluetooth support we’ve all been asking for?
How was such a crucial and standard feature with most electronics nowadays left out with this “next-gen” console. A wireless Bluetooth headset is far more next-gen than plugging a wired headset into your controller.

4. Push to Talk option for the PS button – access system voice commands – I believe system voice commands should remain inactive while game or app is running. If the gamer presses the PS button and game or app is running in background, then voice commands should be active. There are functions for the PS button – tap and long press. introduce double tap allowing 3 functions tied to the one button.
5. Broader range of online status’ … Invisible – appear offline, busy, away, etc. – add voice command to change these status’
6. Sleep (standby) function – now that more and more people use their console for media streaming – ‘on the fly’ sleep function ala Sleep found on TVs. I would love to be able to tell (literally – via voice command) my PS4 to shut off after 90 mins one night while watching Netflix then 120 mins the next night.

Seriously though, this was something you were promising months ago. You said even before the system was launched you would add it via a FW update.
The PS4 is ranked as being the worst media playback system currently. Below the XBO, PS3, 360… there is no reason for this.
Stop pushing Music Unlimited so hard and let us listen to OUR music for a change. Thanks.

I bought my PS4 on launch day @midnight and it has ran flawlessly up but as of late I am getting these slight screen tears and temporary black screens (picture cuts but sounds stays). I checked all my cables and they are good and the HDMI goes into the back port all way so I am thinking could this be a software issue that could be patched?

I would like it if I could be able to change my PSN ID. and please add an update to the ps4 so if I pause my game and turn the system off I can pick up right where I left off with out having to reload the game back up. and I would like it if I could have the option to follow someone of there profile or be there friend.

Also, is Sony gonna include soon an option to PAUSE and RESUME (not just CANCEL) downloads and updates? I have a poor connection so this could be very helpful for me :(
Any word on output resolution for these videos? Would be really cool to get it up to HD resolutions.

I have a question, there were some details about this upcoming 1.7 firmware that were not specified on this thread, like DIM the lightbar, being able to record and share longer clips of our gameplay sessions, and beingle able to archive our twitch broadcasts. Are those new feature coming too on this update? Thanks!!

Any update on DLNA/UPnP streaming support? I mean I have a PS3 but it’s now in another room. Sort of annoying to have to use the browser to stream content from my own network.

We will we ever get the option to import our own music into the ps4? The musi unlimited app is semi ok nut i have a plethra of cds that arent in it and really dont wanna pay a subscription just to jam out, child support kinda hinders my cash a bit.

How about a section in the PlayStation store for psvita/ps3/ps4 cross buy? or maybe a downloads list again so as you guys add games that people have previously bought to ps4 you can just pop right in and download on ps4 like escape plan and hopefully future titles
Please allow us to change our PSN IDs I personally would use this feature sparingly only when I need it. In fact if you allow us to pay a charge to change our names everybody wins. Consumers/Gamers: will no longer need to add friends back on new account, will not need to sacrifice or split game purchases, lose save files and trophies, SONY: they would receive amazing consumer feedback and receive a profit for people paying to change their names. Please allow this feature to come into fruition since that is a huge feature that we as a community have been pleading you guys to add I very well know there are some people who made these accounts when they were younger unknowing of the consequences of not being able to change thier names now. However, I’m very cognizant that this is a must have feature at this modern age of gaming.

All these features sound pretty cool. I keep hoping for 3D blu ray support. The few games that support 3D on the PS4 look so astounding compared to the PS3. I really wish I could continue that experience with movies without having to use a separate player.

Sony: I know if you guys allow a PSN ID change service people will pay for it Sony. Do something like M$ did and make it $10 and people will pay for it. Hell 2 of my friends alone want to change their ID.
You had asked earlier how we would customize our themes.
I’m thinking I would want a variety of options for the sound and wallpaper
I would like to have wallpapers that change depending on the outside environment like weather or upcoming PlayStation events. For example- on PlayStation’s birthday, perhaps, there would be a birthday theme and links to free promotional stuff or celebratory tournaments.
I think it would also be good to have a variety of options for the organization of the main page- maybe, things are presented in bubbles or in the form of a 3-d pyramid with different options on each side. That’s really just a start- you’re the team whose job it is to be creative. Therefore- I trust your judgement as long as there is an opportunity to apply some individuality to our PS4 systems.
Here are some things I expect to see in the PS4:
– Play videos, display pictures and play music from USB, or store media from USB to the PS4 hard drive so I can play them on the PS4.
– A YouTube app and the ability to upload videos to YouTube directly from my PS4.
– DNLA support at least for playing media from my DNLA server in my home.
– Automatic updates that don’t require the user to stay away from the PS4 for more than 24-48 hours or whatever it is. We should be able to schedule this like we did on the PS3. The current system benefits only those who aren’t frequent gamers, which sounds like the opposite of what should happen. I hate waiting for downloads/updates and I play daily!
– Suspend/Fast resume
– I would love to see some Google Play apps on the PS4, such as Google Play Music and Google Play Movies & TV. I know that Sony has their own versions of these same services from Google, but they support other services with no issue. Why not support Google, who they partner with already for Android support?
– Better, more feature rich Playstation app for iOS and Android with native Playstation Store support.
Once these features get added, I will be one happy gamer.
– MP3
– Video Support
– DLNA
– Custom Wallpapers (possibly sliding when going through menus like on phones)
– Upload directly to Youtube
Sooooo…still nothing. We don’t care about Share Factory, we want the ability to play MP4 and MP3 files on our expensive console like every other playstation has done before. How have we waited this long for such a simple addition?
In fact, I’d LOVE the option to turn OFF the share feature. Use that processing power for games. I haven’t used Share nor will I. I don’t need it and would like for that extra power to go towards what I am using instead of it being wasted.
Since we can put our own music in the videos, does that mean we can play our own music in games!? :DD
So when are we going to get a Native Twitch App? I would love to watch other Twitch users/players on my PS4 besides “PS4 ONLY USERS”
