PlayStation Meeting 2013: PlayStation 4 is The Future of Gaming

PlayStation 4

Today is an exciting day for gamers everywhere. As you may have seen live with millions of others across the world, just moments ago we introduced PlayStation 4 (PS4), our next-generation console that will deliver breakthrough gaming experiences for our fans starting this holiday season.

PlayStation 4 is centered on all of you – the gamers. It redefines rich and immersive gameplay with powerful graphics and speed, intelligent personalization, deeply integrated social capabilities, and innovative second-screen features. When we designed PlayStation 4, we focused on building an architecture that will allow the greatest game developers in the industry to push boundaries and dig deep within their imaginations to create the most immersive and unique games for you to enjoy.

Killzone: Shadow Fall

The future of PlayStation is all about great games and entertainment, and at PlayStation Meeting 2013, we brought some of the brightest and most creative minds from the development community on stage to unveil the games that will define PS4. A partial initial lineup for PlayStation 4 includes first-party games from Guerilla Games (Killzone: Shadow Fall), Sucker Punch (inFamous Second Son), Evolution Studios (Driveclub), and Japan Studio (Knack), as well as titles from our partners such as Activision/Bungie (Destiny), Blizzard Entertainment (Diablo III), Capcom (Deep Down), and Ubisoft (Watch_Dogs). PlayStation also reinforced its commitment to self-publishing and the independent development community by having Jonathan Blow onstage who gave a sneak peek of his upcoming title The Witness. Finally, the incredible minds at Media Molecule and Quantic Dream gave glimpses of their conceptualization process and the future of gameplay with some remarkable footage. We only scratched the surface at the event, and will have many more exciting titles to come.

With so much amazing content in development for PlayStation 4, we want to give our fans every opportunity to check out virtually any PS4 game when it becomes available. In the future, when a gamer sees a title of interest in PlayStation Store, they can immediately start playing a portion of the actual game.

Our next generation console will change the way you interact with friends while you play. PlayStation 4 lets you instantly share images and videos of your favorite gameplay moments on Facebook with a single press on the DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s “share” button. You can also broadcast while you play in real-time through Ustream, allowing friends to comment or jump into your game in new ways. Be sure to check out the post from Shu Yoshida, WWS President, for his thoughts on DUALSHOCK 4 and the “share” features.

With PlayStation 4 we also want you to access your games quicker than ever before. PS4’s “suspend mode” eliminates the load time on your saved game and allows you to immediately return to where you left off by pressing the power button. PlayStation 4’s background downloading and updating capability also allows you to immediately play digital titles as they download, or update the system when the hardware is powered off.

Leveraging PlayStation Network with Gaikai technology, PS4 will make it easier for you to play your favorite games and access content wherever you are. We see PS Vita as the ultimate companion device for PS4 and it’s our long-term vision to make most PS4 games playable on PS Vita, so you can bring your favorite games from the big-screen TV to your PS Vita over Wi-Fi. We’re also introducing a “PlayStation App” for iPhone, iPad, and Android devices that acts as a second screen, allowing for unique gameplay possibilities such as viewing maps during an adventure game or remotely watching friends play during an epic battle—right from a smartphone or tablet.

With so much to look forward to in 2013, I want to take a moment to thank you for following PlayStation through our incredible journey and allowing us to bring the most advanced hardware, software and networked gaming experiences into millions of homes around the world. We’re excited about this next chapter, and will continue to provide you with more details about PlayStation 4 and the broader PlayStation ecosystem, as we get closer to launch this holiday season.

  • Don’t forget to pack a hdmi cable in the box when the ps4 is released. Hint

  • CANT TOUCH THIS. HA HA Nintendo/xbox/everyone . It Just Does Everything and more Playstation 4 Entertainment Complete .From your Customer Ambassador to the Playstation Network online id:bombbreath any ? or comment leave them at Playstation community forum .Thank You

  • Looks amazing! I love the controller and hope the design stays! I do hope we will get a few variations of the console colours at launch and not at the end of the console cycle. More fun and personalization that way.

I do hope that PS4 won’t take the digital only approach. I buy all my games new so it is not the used games that I am worried about, but the internet connection. Downloading games of that quality will be a massive hit on the bandwidth especially if it is uncapped. Also not sure if this is just a rumour, but I heard Microsoft wants to implement the function that you always have to be online even to play offline, I think that is a big no no and would be a massive turn off when deciding which console to buy. Internet is not reliable. No matter how good your service provider is, internet can go down. When that happens, people such as myself play offline, but if that won’t be an option then it will just be a big expensive box when you don’t have a connection.

Hope they keep the CD/DVD/Blu Ray drive! I use my PS3 to watch films all the time, it is more than just a console for me, it is like a little home entertainment box and would hate to see that go away.

  • Will the PSVita now become a truly cross-platform device?

If so, I will buy the PSVita Diablo III bundle!!

  • Everything is looking good. Only thing That I would like to see is the support of MULTI tv. I have seen many people over the years ask if it can be done for ps3. Honestly I dont give a damn about having 3 monitors for playing a single player game. But to have 2 tv’s hooked up for mult player games is what I would like to see. Even make it an adapter that I would buy after to hook 2 tv’s up.

  • Loved everything about the conference and the PS4 until info started coming in after the fact. The news from Engadget about PSN purchases not transferring to PS4 is pretty upsetting. If we want the new console, we have to basically give up all games and content we bought and own digitally? It seriously can’t just be downloaded and installed onto the PS4?

  • Is it true that PSN games will NOT transfer over to PS4??

If I can’t re-download PSN games onto PS4 or use Gaikai to play the digital games I already purchased on PSN then that is some sad news.

    Guess time will tell.

  • I’m shocked by how many ideas and features they have jammed into this hardware and how productive their game studios are. I’m most interested and skeptical in Media Molecule’s game. How can you take input from unskilled users and make it look good?

  • Also please bundle a charge cable in the ps4 box that is least 9 feet and not 3 feet. Not good for the eyes when your sitting 3 feet away from a 40 inch tv. Were not in japan sony.

  • Two things must be in place for me to even consider buying the PS4. Backwards compatibility with at least PS3, & even better if also PS2, and it must play discs of some sort. I will never buy a console that is all digital. If that’s the way they want to go then PS3 will be the last system I own. I don’t buy digital now other than some small PSN games and I’m not about to shell out $50-60 on a digital version of a retail game. Please don’t screw this up Sony.

  • About effin time… just pray that all the bugs are out of everything by launch time; dont want no network crash again! Looking foward to it!

  • The release mentioned Gaikai working on PS1/PS2/PS3 streaming on the PS4. However, i’m seeing news reports that our existing PSN purchases won’t transfer, i’m pensive until I know more about reverse compatibility and price point.

  • I like how they showed the new Playstaion Camera and never talked about it. The Games looked really good But I don’t know what they were running on. I got my $10 Thanks to PSN….. PS4 sounds good but I just hope it don’t end up being over $500 because we all know what will happen if it does..

  • Awe-freaken-some.

  • Just heard my PSN games won’t transfer over?? What the hell, this is a major disappointment, especially as a Plus member since the beginning. Please take some time to reconsider this, because between this and the major focus on freakin’ facebook updates I’m starting to get pretty disappointed over here…

  • So if the PS4 is centered on the gamers, and Sony skipped out on backwards compatibility (again), how much is it going to cost me to download the games I already have (PS1, 2, and 3) so I can play them on the new system? That is, assuming everything works like it’s supposed to… They didn’t block used games, but having to keep 2 old consoles around to play my favorite “old” games is really getting on my nerves, especially when Sony keeps claiming that the PS4 is supposed to fill “all your gaming, social, and entertainment needs”. Seems to me they left out a significant amount of stuff to make it the go-to platform…

  • What would I like to have seen in a PS4? That the Vita would be a central part of the PS4 system as a controller and remote. That the distinction between Vita games and PS4 games would evaporate, with all titles installed on your PS Cloud account and played from your PS4 at home and on your Vita (anywhere). That your Cloud games would be playable on your Vita from any wi-fi connection. That the PS4 would be a video/music/gaming server, able to connect to wireless speakers (up to 4 pair) so the PS4 could serve as your music server. That the PS4 would stream video and games wirelessly to all your TVs and have multiple people playing games at the same time on different TVs, using your Vita as a remote/game controller. That an UltraViolet app would be there from launch day to allow playing any UV titles you own through your PS4. I was looking for far more than a gaming console, and think that’s what Sony (and Microsoft) have to provide to keep the console alive. Hopefully that is what the PS4 will become.

  • I’m assuming the “instant streaming demos” are going to have a time limit or content limit, so I’m very disappointed they didn’t mention anything about simply renting games through the cloud. I don’t know why they wouldn’t do it. $5 for a couple days renting games would make them a killing.

I’m also disappointed that they are still being as vague as possible about remote play and timelines and long-term plans. It would be nice to hear that remote play will be universal, at least with ps4 games. Simple as that.

  • Don’t get me wrong, I’ll be getting a PS4 eventually. But if they continue to be vague about remote play and every ps4 game doesn’t work, and they don’t include our digital ps3 games, and they start saying something familliar like ps3 backwards compatibility streaming will arrive at some indeterminate date in the future — then I’ll just be waiting a year or two until the promises actually develop.

  • Knack is super cute.

  • Oh great. I just spent $400 (Vita system plus memory) on a remote control for a ~$500 system I will never buy.

    Just great.

So what can the Vita do by itself?

  • Why didn’t show Sony the PS4 console ???

  • @ AV-X14

You obviously bought the Vita with the intent of using it’s features and games that are currently available for it. Why does how it works with PS4 matter?

You should be happy in knowing that the Vita will be getting support well into next gen regardless if you have a PS4 or not.

The Vita is awesome, have fun with it! If you are not planning on buying a PS4, that doesn’t mean your Vita looses value.

  • WOW. F…ing AWESOME. Can’t wait. Not buying any new games for my PS3, saving to buy PS4.

  • I’m a little disappointed with Sony. I watched over 2hrs of it live with the 3.4 million people. however, you didn’t show the console. you didn’t show a video of the interface just stills and the games look great. however, what will the store look like? the other thing is. I have quite a few PS3 games and not being able to use it on the PS4 is a lost cause.

  • This actually looks pretty awesome so far. Tbh, I don’t really care that much about uploading to facebook or getting friends to drop health potions into my game (won’t be using those features), but the multi-device functionality, save-state power on/off, and simultaneous play while downloading is pretty sweet. If you do it right (i.e. making PS4 games playable on the Vita by default), I also suddenly have a huge reason to get a Vita.

  • I wish this allowing another person to help with a part was available now. I need help with one of the turret trophies from the original Dead Space HAHAHA damn.

  • This generation, we’ll be the dominant console! I’ll support you Playstation. Through thick and thin, until the very end, I’m with you :)

  • @ KidCommando

You have a point, and I do really like the Vita, but I can count the number of games coming out for it on one hand.

I really hope that changes, and it’s a shame they did absolutely nothing to alleviate those concerns.

  • Btw, for everyone complaining about not seeing the console, they can’t show EVERYTHING yet. E3 is still a few months away and they don’t wanna show all their cards before then. The competition hasn’t revealed their console yet and Sony is playing this VERY smartly. Just be happy you know what you know now. They could have made us wait until E3 to tell us anything at all. Be grateful guys, I am :)

  • AMAZING! I wonder if its gonna be expensive

  • im a huge sony fan but im sorry sony what are you doing the way your going now microsoft might just beat you your like a billion dollar company and you just want more money from people having to re-buy your entire collection of games what is that who wants to do that your going to lose quite a few customers it probably wont affect you but think about

  • “PlayStation 4 won’t be compatible with current-gen PSN titles”

after reading this news I’ve decided not to buy a PS4. unless Sony can make it play PS1 2 3 and PSN games in the future.

It seems like Sony doesn’t even try to do business.

  • Oh… and I’ll stop buying anything in PSN store too. why do I want to buy something that will not playable in the future?

  • @AV-X14

I hear ya, there are not many announced games in the immediate future for the Vita. As I said though, with Vita being a big part of PS4 you can rest assured that it WILL get much more content in the years to come.

I can almost guarantee Vita will have a big presence at E3 in June and hopefully that will give you a more positive outlook on the future of that $400 handheld.

Also, don’t forget about the streaming. Just because you won’t have a PS4 doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to take advantage of Gaikai and streaming games to your Vita in the future! ….or at least I don’t think owning a PS4 will be a requisite to have that option on the Vita. :)

  • I’ve heard that PS3 content will not be compatible with PS4, which will be sad. I was looking forward to trading my PS3 in for a PS4 but would miss PlayStation Home, LBP Karting, Dust 514, and other favorite PS3 offerings. I would like to know how PlayStation Plus will adjust the IGC when PS4 launches as that will help me overcome the loss of PS3 specific games.

  • if its in 400 range… day one purchase

  • how about some playstation vita love ,we need AAA games for psvita

  • I hate how Sony always releases near Christmas! I want one now!
& I’m sure 3 months after you”ll have a special deal with upgraded HD & included games!

Stop screwing with us! Bring it out early & do a special Christmas bundle!

  • Sorry Sony I Will Not be buying the New PS4, All the New features makes it sound like it will be very expensive and your existing customers will not be happy if they need to re buy games they already own because of compatability problems. Please make a console that would allow your customers to play their existing library and New titles. I have owned a PS1,PS2 and now the PS3, i have an large collection of games that i would love to be able to just put in 1 console. You have the ability to design Amazing hardware to play all sorts of media why can’t you design a gaming console that’s the Mother of all gaming systems and would have the ability to play your huge existing library of games as well as future titles.

  • If sony makes the ps4 a stream only console, it will loose a lot of sales in my location due to the fact of the low economy. many people in my area love sony but dont have internet to stream or even download games, causing a lot of my friends and people i talk to look down on the ps4. therefore ruining sales!!! it would only be smart if they keep a disc drive so games can still be bought, sold, or traded… we might be a poor economy but i guarentee that it will royaly ruin the sales of the hyped ps4…. dont get my wrong, i am a very huge sony fan and that is all i recomend to anyone, but if it is a stream only console like what i keep hearing then i feel that i will sadly see sony R.I.P. :(

  • team #playstation

  • I think this is a bit lame. Aside from the actual hardware capabilities, some of these features have been around for a while on xbox and instead of adding them to PS3 as updates like you should, you just decide to sprinkle them about on the next console premier to make it seem even more revolutionary. The controller looks like crap. That is to say that it’s barely changed in over ten years, and there IS a reason people prefer the 360 controller to the Dualshock.

I feel like I’ve just watched history repeat itself here, and last time it didn’t turn out so well for Sony.

  • No backwards compatibility killed any chance of me even thinking of buying this system. No wonder they’ve been skimpy with the PSOne Classics on their store. Sorry Sony, but I’m going back to Nintendo for my next gen console. The PS3 will be my last console I purchase from you.

  • You know with no backwards compatibility, especially on PSN downloads! I will never buy this which is a shame as until I head this I was 100% in. I mean I have over 1100 PSN downloads and 57 disc games that will be useless to me on ps4… That still uses blu ray…and the same account. To me that seems like step one to include forget taking over for a friend in game when they need help. I want my investment to retain worth. And I know the argument exists that you can keep the current console you have and still playa the games but as an owner of most consoles I know that I only have my PS3 and PC hooked up. >_>

  • This is SOOOOO COOOOOL 8D
Can’t wait for this, to be honest I didn’t think the PS3 was that awesome, I’m so glad they didn’t take long to release the PS4. This is excited about this :)

  • i want it now when i i preorder it

  • when can we preorder it

  • Hey, i didn’t watch that livestream yesterday, but does anyone know when i will be out? and is there going to be social things like playstation home ‘n stuff like that? and ive heard rhumors about gta v going to be released WITH the ps4 … by the way… I can’t wait… does someone have the answers?
