PlayStation Meeting 2013: PlayStation 4 is The Future of Gaming

PlayStation 4

Today is an exciting day for gamers everywhere. As you may have seen live with millions of others across the world, just moments ago we introduced PlayStation 4 (PS4), our next-generation console that will deliver breakthrough gaming experiences for our fans starting this holiday season.

PlayStation 4 is centered on all of you – the gamers. It redefines rich and immersive gameplay with powerful graphics and speed, intelligent personalization, deeply integrated social capabilities, and innovative second-screen features. When we designed PlayStation 4, we focused on building an architecture that will allow the greatest game developers in the industry to push boundaries and dig deep within their imaginations to create the most immersive and unique games for you to enjoy.

Killzone: Shadow Fall

The future of PlayStation is all about great games and entertainment, and at PlayStation Meeting 2013, we brought some of the brightest and most creative minds from the development community on stage to unveil the games that will define PS4. A partial initial lineup for PlayStation 4 includes first-party games from Guerilla Games (Killzone: Shadow Fall), Sucker Punch (inFamous Second Son), Evolution Studios (Driveclub), and Japan Studio (Knack), as well as titles from our partners such as Activision/Bungie (Destiny), Blizzard Entertainment (Diablo III), Capcom (Deep Down), and Ubisoft (Watch_Dogs). PlayStation also reinforced its commitment to self-publishing and the independent development community by having Jonathan Blow onstage who gave a sneak peek of his upcoming title The Witness. Finally, the incredible minds at Media Molecule and Quantic Dream gave glimpses of their conceptualization process and the future of gameplay with some remarkable footage. We only scratched the surface at the event, and will have many more exciting titles to come.

With so much amazing content in development for PlayStation 4, we want to give our fans every opportunity to check out virtually any PS4 game when it becomes available. In the future, when a gamer sees a title of interest in PlayStation Store, they can immediately start playing a portion of the actual game.

Knack

Our next generation console will change the way you interact with friends while you play. PlayStation 4 lets you instantly share images and videos of your favorite gameplay moments on Facebook with a single press on the DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s “share” button. You can also broadcast while you play in real-time through Ustream, allowing friends to comment or jump into your game in new ways. Be sure to check out the post from Shu Yoshida, WWS President, for his thoughts on DUALSHOCK 4 and the “share” features.

With PlayStation 4 we also want you to access your games quicker than ever before. PS4’s “suspend mode” eliminates the load time on your saved game and allows you to immediately return to where you left off by pressing the power button. PlayStation 4’s background downloading and updating capability also allows you to immediately play digital titles as they download, or update the system when the hardware is powered off.

Leveraging PlayStation Network with Gaikai technology, PS4 will make it easier for you to play your favorite games and access content wherever you are. We see PS Vita as the ultimate companion device for PS4 and it’s our long-term vision to make most PS4 games playable on PS Vita, so you can bring your favorite games from the big-screen TV to your PS Vita over Wi-Fi. We’re also introducing a “PlayStation App” for iPhone, iPad, and Android devices that acts as a second screen, allowing for unique gameplay possibilities such as viewing maps during an adventure game or remotely watching friends play during an epic battle—right from a smartphone or tablet.

With so much to look forward to in 2013, I want to take a moment to thank you for following PlayStation through our incredible journey and allowing us to bring the most advanced hardware, software and networked gaming experiences into millions of homes around the world. We’re excited about this next chapter, and will continue to provide you with more details about PlayStation 4 and the broader PlayStation ecosystem, as we get closer to launch this holiday season.

  • If it is NOT Backwards Compatible (PS, PS2 &PS3) Than I don’t care what it can do… I am sick of buying and enjoying games only to learn that I basically just wasted my money on a White PS3 500gb System to find out PS4 is here… Fine I can deal with the systems but If i can’t play and enjoy the games I already have too, thats so much money out the f**king window… and lets face it GAMESTOP sucks when it comes to value of trades.

  • This is Awesome! I Can’t wait for this perfect console “YET” to come out!
PS: pleace don’t change that much on the controller. It was Perfect made on Ps3.

  • Meeting? More like a kick the door down and barge a 100 people into a 1 room apartment.
Not everything was super impressive, but over this left a lasting impression. It seems Sony wants to really get out there now, even though the PS3 has about 3-4 years to go(10 year life), but they don’t wanna play catch up. Overall I gave this a 8.75/10 and would’ve given more if I saw the system. But that’ll have to wait till E3.

  • Isn`t The Old One Good Enough?

  • Get your bodies ready peoples!

  • Love the meeting, loved the games especially Killzone and Infamous. If the PS4 is region free then you definitley have a loyal Playstation customer

  • I am super impressed with PS4 …been with PlayStation since the beginning, yes I strayed to the other guys for a bit but I always came back home. After being burned by M$ not once but twice I am through with them forever I don’t care how awesome people tell me their new system will be…I am PlayStation through and through :)
The only thing I hope is that we don’t have to start over with our trophies, hopefully the PS4 will work in seamlessly much like the PS Vita did with our PSN accounts.

I am sooooo looking forward to the future with PS4!!
    Awesome job Sony!

    Day 1 PlayStation 4 owner :)
now can we fast forward to November?

  • Architecture sounds decent but what happens when the “enhanced GPU” becomes outdated in 2 years? GPU changes boost gaming and without the ability to upgrade, “enhanced” just means “we will try and get a 6 month old GPU architecture but it will probably be a year old”

No PS3 backward compatibility – FAIL on a major scale. Don’t feed me the crap about streaming PS3 games unless you have it working. I am not a 15 year old who will believe that until I actually see it. Also, how much will those games cost even though we already own them?

Sony screwed PS2 people when they removed the PS2 compatibility for no reason, now they are screwing the PS3 people too. What a joke. Oh and what about the blu-ray?

I think it is time for developer’s to move back to the PC for gaming and just port things to the consoles since PC gaming seems to be the way of the future with junk like this being called “next-gen”

Fanbois will be lining up to buy 1st day because they just have no clue but I bet the PS4 will go over as well as the Vita has, not at all. Deeply disappointed in Sony and I think people will agree with that statement by not buying.

  • i was sold at Killzone: Shadow Fall, then i saw inFAMOUS: Second Son, THEN I SAW DIABLO III… i’ve been waiting AND WAITING to see if Diablo was ever coming back to Playstation and im just in tears that it’s finally coming back :)

  • Absolutely can not wait looking spectacular so far.
I hope that the PS3’s home idea is re-used as a proper persistant world where you can meet friends, buy games, post challenges and show off achievements, as I believe with the network Sony is promising this should be relatively easy and would far surpass Nintendo.
Also great to see Blizzard on board am hoping against hope that “project titan” is also a PS4 title.

I do have one question though with its awesome connectivity with the PSVita is it worth buying one now or will there be a special PS4 version made that takes greater advantage of the new tech?

PS. I have a suggestion for those who are worried about the online streaming and hitting your download caps, boycott isp’s who do not offer unlimited it is as simple as that if enough people do this the big Telcos will realise that their poor limits are losing them customers and they will improve.

  • Sadly i missed the whole show due to local weather and a temp power outage……but reading up on it i have a few things. Jack i know your skimming this comments section as it is giving you feedback and a general idea of how the world is taking the news. Sorry for splitting this into a few post but you limit me

if it isnt going to be BC then the only way i can even justify buying one in the current economy is if its no more then $400…….more then that and itll be at least a year before i grab one.

New features sound amazing cept for the easy one step share to facebook, how much longer do you really think facebook is gonna be the go to social media? its just like myspace was at the ps3 launch,on its way out and already starting to fail.

  • Sony should read the comments. Most gamers including myself don’t want motion sensors, ability to share photos, etc. We just want Awesome games. If we wanted motion play we would get a Wii. Leave off all this crap and lower the price. This way you can focus on making just games and not any of this social media. One of the main reasons for playing a game is to get away from social media.

  • Controller……sounds nice….hate the design…..it looks like frankenstein got bored and decided to make an even uglier monster out of dead ps3 and xbox controllers.

Vita play……. having all games on vita as well, sounds good…..unless you actually think about it,bad move,it’ll cause the same problems xbox caused for us this gen…Devs will have to tone back the game, give it worse graphics then it could have and make it shorter due to the limited size and power of the vita…..it would be like putting a ps3 game on the psp….you didn’t do it and you were right not to.

  • Id also like to see better Qa this round, Stop with the “we’ll fix it after launch style that is killing gaming now….you have a Qa team, make them do their job or clean house and get new Qa people. I Qa for [adult swim] games where the games are more of a joke then anything and we test better then the stuff on consoles lately. Honestly if your Qa team is this bad hire me, not kidding i will guarantee you vast improvement. You know my email and contact info thru my psn jack so look up my res and give me a call. Its actually same as my psn’s email minus the 2, yes a shameless self plug but also the truth, Id even be willing to do some free work just to prove to you how big of an asset i will be.

Regardless this looks amazing and i cant wait to see how the future goes.

  • Now on to the PS4, I will say I’m happy for it and at the same time feeling uneasy about it. I looked at the videos and those really did impress me! I’m excited for some of the games and otehrs didn’t interest me but to each their own. Two things concern me for getting one: backwards compatability and blu-ray capability.

Backwards compatability: This has been a staple of Sony’s since the ps2. While the history on this feature has been rocky at best, I feel it is important especially with the PS4 because all of us have spent a good deal of money on the PSN and what not to enhance and enjoy the games we want and have. To lose this would be a death knell to this system if only on that fact alone!

  • continued…

Blu-Ray capability: When this was introduced, people thought this media would not catch on and now it is everywhere to the point where you can get cheap blu-ray players for lower than 50 bucks. I hope the PS4 does not lose this function on the fact which partly goes back to backwards compatability but also the fact people use this as a means to watch dvds and the like as well as gaming!

All in all, I can’t wait for it to come out and be revealed at E3! I want to see a lot more this system can do and as long as they can keep the price down on it, it will be well worth the money!! Now only if I can get my wife to sign off on it!!

  • I still can’t believe there was no appearance of the actual device. Imagine a new iPhone coming out, and they don’t even show you!

My biggest question though is whether or not there’ll be used games available. I REALLY hope we don’t have to pay full price for every single game and can’t resell. If so, I (and millions of others) are going to boycott it completely.

I could potentially see some kind of hybrid model where you can get used to play single-player and have to buy it in full for online, though.

    Any word on that?

  • I will only buy a ps4 when The Last Guardian arrives, it will be the most ambitious and advanced game ever created mark my words. All the other games I couldn’t give a toss about, apart from Watchdogs.

Sony please show off the design of the ps4 at e3.

Show The Last Guardian ( Top Priority )
    Show Agent by Rockstar North
    Show Final Fantasy versus

You will then win e3 2013

  • Jack, I was worried when we didn’t see you yesterday! Very amped for PS4, lots of features that sound super smart to me :)

    Long live play!

  • I didn’t think I would be this excited for next gen. Congrats Sony!

  • I’m glad to see people excited, but I personally am waiting to see more and hear more.. I won’t be an early adopter, that much I am certain of.. I’ve always taken care of my consoles but my first PS1, PS2 and PS3 all broke.. I will not go through that again..
Frankly, I am happy with the PS3 at this time.. Still plenty of good titles coming out for it, so no real need to be an early adopter of the PS4 anyhow.. I’m not interested in sharing game videos or whatever, I don’t care for motion controls(yes, i had Move, there weren’t enough games to take good advantage of it)… i don’t care for streaming or backwards compatibility(still have a PS2 and all my PS1 and PS2 games)…

In all fairness, there wasn’t much that was unexpected at this Meeting.. No Last Guardian.. No FFXIII Versus.. No showing of the console.. no actual price point… I’ll hold my enthusiasm until i see what it can really do in terms of gameplay and AI…

on the plus side, i will say Watch Dogs looks good..

  • Just sold my wii u, worst purchase EVER, will learn from my mistakes and get back on on the playstation train since the PS1

  • Sony, in order for you to reveal something you have to show it and I’m pretty sure no one saw an actual PS4 so that means you only announced a PS4. You did, however, reveal a controller.

  • Hot Damn what a show, talk about knocking it out of the park. This is by far the best conference I have seen and I have seen a lot…

The PS4 looks like a great piece of kit and I can’t wait to get one… you can be god damn sure I will be getting this day.

Sony you listened to what the gamers and developers wanted and that is making the ps4 10 times better than the ps3.

Making it easier for developers was the best move you have done for next gen.

The Ram is next… 8GB of DDR5 is just awesome paired with an APU was a brilliant move… Eliminating the bus between the GPU and CPU will allow for wicked fast super charged loading… loading times will be so minimal it is going to be great for gamers.

God damn you made me happy as a gamer. Awesome…

I love so much that you Kept the media services and apps to a minimum… I am glad you are putting gaming first… That is why we buy your products… for the games everything else is a plus but if your gaming act is not together than forget…

You have your stuff wired and it looks fantastic….

    COME ON FALL PS4 PS4 PS4 PS4

  • And hopefully it comes bundled with an hdmi wire finally lol

  • Will the full Show be on PSN soon? In 1080p to would be cool! :P I NEED IT!!! :D

  • I am so excited about this! Finally, some info! I <3 PlayStation! My hubby had better get me this!!!

  • Thank you SONY , You did it. Im sorry let me wipe my tears of joy and excitement away, You will allways be the best, Proven again. WOW what a launch title punch. You have killed the competition . GAME OVER for Nintendo/xbox/everyone. Long Live Game. It Just Does Everything and more Playstation 4 Entertainment Complete The Future of Gameing is NOW. Thank you From your Customer Ambassador to the Playstation Network online id:bombbreath any ? or comment leave them at Playstation community forum for me.

  • Centered around gamers! HA!

Developers sure. Throwing x86 in there will sure make it familar.

But centered around gamers? No. No backwards compatibilty is lame. Streaming backwards compatibility in the “future”(Hint:Once you forget about it or we can figure out how to make money on it”) is a lame copout. Rebuying stuff you already own is lame.

You didn’t even show the box or annouce if it can even play PS1 games.

  • How about a PS3 (maybe even PS2?) disc to digital program similar to Vudu’s? $2-3 to have the game on PS4 would be awesome!

  • Great show!! Can’t wait till the system comes out! Great news about Vita playing PS4 games!

  • did they already show the console ps4

  • Did anyone see Bethesda on that screen full of developers? Curious to see what they pull together for us

  • I hope there’s a fantastic explanation as to why our PSN purchases won’t transfer to PS4.

  • Cant wait to see what Tekken and Grand theft Autos Look Like on this bad boy!!

  • I am really excited for the PS4!

The only thing I am disappointed about is the lack of backwards compatibility. The thing is, I always guessed that the PS4 would not be backwards compatible because adding the chips inside the PS3 would increase the cost of the system, but would it be possible to release an add-on that can enable the PS4 to be backwards compatible? This way, I would not have to worry if my PS3 breaks down and I am already on my second PS3 so I just want to make sure I can play games I already own if my second PS3 breaks.

Also, how many USB port will the PS4 have? I want the PS4 to have at least 4 USB ports.

When will we get more information on the PS4? And when will the console itself be shown?

  • @276: You must have missed the part where the PS4 will play PS3 Blu-Ray discs, and that you can essentially try out any game (PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP, PS Vita and PSN) from the playstation store free of charge. “You only pay for what you like.” We are coming up on a turning point in the gaming industry. Four years ago I was able to go and buy a random PC game in disc format. Now, the chances of finding a disc based PC game without preordering it is slim to none. Thanks to Steam, GameStop PC App and other clients, we can download practically any game we want, and with 1TB+ hard drives available, space isn’t an issue. It’s not better or worse, it’s just different. I have a few PS1 and PS2 games currently, and I will never get rid of them. But do I play them on a regular basis? No. Why? Because I have PS3 games. It’s a simple fact that with new systems comes new technology and new games. Is it sad that the great games of the past get left in the dust? Sure. But the fact that they are available on the PS Store shows Sony’s commitment to remembering the past while embracing the future.

  • The meeting was SO EXCITING! This new system sounds like it will be THE console to own in this upcoming generation. I can’t wait to have it in my house!

  • Wasn’t really interested in the next gen of consoles just yet but can’t deny this all sounds amazing…..

  • this will be my christmas gift now show us the 4K bravia tv and console

  • Simply put ….WOW! cant wait for the release date got some money already put back.

  • Will GRAND THEFT AUTO 5 BE ON THE PS4 ALSO?

  • Dear Sony

You need to talk to Gearbox and get exclusive rights to Borderlands 3. Or whatever they name the next chapter in the series for the PS4.

But for what I seen last night … I Sooooo Ready !

  • No PlayStation App for Windows 8/RT and Windows Phone 8?

  • it’s important to know whether PS3 games will be compatible with the PS4 and if dualshock 3 will be compatible with it, but for some reason this kind of thing is never mentioned upfront. will they be compatible?

  • 1. Can’t wait to see it in action, obviously the graphics can only get better but I’m worried the gaming physics and fluid motion of characters and cameras still won’t be much better. For many of the games I’ve played the character movement just hasn’t seen the same great strides as the graphics. Likely because developers still haven’t spent enough research and time on this element of their games (with the exception of racing games).

    2. I have a PS Vita and have no interest in using it to stream games back and forth between a PS4 or PS3 three at this time. From what I saw in the presentation this is the only change when PS4 comes out. RIM did the same with their Playbook tablet and Phones, it was a colossal failure and I see the same here. Apple does it with their Phones/Tablets/Apple TV/Computers – I have them all and don’t care for the feature much either. Honestly these companies make a big deal out of something that is basically the same as using your laptop with a projector – who cares? I (and it appears many others) just want the same game on both the PS4 and PS Vita, it doesn’t have to be complete with every single story line but give me the same game.

  • @284

Your right that we can download whatever we want to the new system. What you left out is that your purchases via the PSN on the PS3 don’t transfer to the PS4 ergot you have to re buy anything you may want to play again or have. Sony confirmed this this morning to Engadget. This is another reason why I don’t like the move to all digital – you never truly own your purchases and are stuck dealing with the whims of a company deciding what you can do with your purchases.

Simple solution of course is to keep your PS3 alive and well. :)

  • I will NOT buy the new ps4. It sounds like how the ps3 was suposse to be.

  • Loved everything about the conference and the PS4 until info started coming in after the fact. This for instance, http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/21/psn-transfers-ps4/ is pretty upsetting. If we want the new console, we have to basically give up all games and content we bought and own digitally? It seriously can’t just be downloaded and installed onto the PS4?
