The Drop: Week of April 30th 2012 New Releases

This week’s The Drop returns with a gangbuster lineup of games on PS Vita, PSN and PS3 — including PSone and PS2 classic gems. Mortal Kombat on PS Vita brings the full PS3 experience and uppercuts it straight into the palm of yours hands courtesy of developer NetherRealm Studios. Packed with the full content of the PS3 game, plus an exclusive PS Vita Challenge Tower, new retro character costumes, all four DLC kombatants, touchscreen fatalities and more.

Hardcore FPS fans will be served with a three main entrees of destruction with Battlefield 2: Bad Company, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops. Both Call of Duty titles come fully packaged with DLC content, and all three FPS juggernauts are PS3 digital downloads. On a special note, make sure to return tomorrow morning at 8 AM PST, and join God of War: Ascension game director Todd Papy, and our very own Jeff Rubenstein for a special live-stream event, straight from Sony Santa Monica Studios.

Enjoy this week’s The Drop.

  • Wow, Rayman 2: Revolution….

That was the first game I bought when I got a PS2. Awesome, awesome game. I think I’ll be picking that one up just for nostalgia’s sake :D

  • I’ve ordered a vita and should get it this week, but I wanna know something. WHERE’S ALL THE EXTRA FEATURES U GUYS PROMISED US!?
    Such as:
    PS1 classics support
More games in the PSP and minis downloadables
Disc game transfer ability from PSP discs to PS Vita system
    and many more

We would just really like to know

  • So does this mean that you can get Black Ops?

  • LEGEND OF DRAGOON

  • Other than that, this week looks pretty good!(Especially Mortal Kombat for Vita)

P.S. Will Mortal Kombat for Vita have cross play with the PS3 version?

  • Might catch up on the Max Payne games before the 3rd but other than that, Starhawk and Max Payne 3, as well as another controller….got it made in that department. Don’t know how long it will be before I pick up Mortal Kombat for the Vita

  • @KwietStorm Hmm. A few months ago, Xbox & Steam got both Max Paynes. I have both on disc for PC from years back.

  • This is a sick Drop, and great PSN+ bonuses coming right around the corner to boot. Great way to start the summer once my finals are over this week.

  • Rabble rabble rabble.

  • I’m thrilled that you guys are adding more PS2 classic but I been wondering ever since the last dropped which involve Persona 3 FES well you guys be adding Persona 4 to Finsh up the series?

  • I don’t own any PS1/PS2 digital games for the PS3 yet; my question is does it display on the “Friends” list that you are playing one? :?

Anyways, Max Payne & Awesomenauts looks great!

  • Will Max Payne 2 have trophy support???

  • How is GT academy a Demo? I was expecting a video… Can someone explain to me!

  • buying Legend of Dragoon as soon as it goes live :D

  • Good drop imho albeit a bit on the FPS overkill mindset in regards to full digital games but still nice to see any games going digital, its a good thing. Hopefully more rpg games get digital releases as that is sorely lacking atm.

BUT!! More PS2, can’t ever get enough of those and with SCEA holding publishing rights to so many PS2 gems I’m hopeful this library continues to grow weekly!!
Now hurry up May 15th, I can’t wait to get Batman AC and Assassins Creed Revelations FINALLY in digital format. Good stuff on the horizon for the PSN, and if I may, its about time. Thanks.

  • @#60 sadly no, you are signed out during PS1/PS2 gaming. Shame since (at least in regards to PS1) its not a memory intensive process to enable the xmb/stay signed in. PS2 I’m not so sure about although it seems to tax the PS3 a good bit playing PS2 games.

  • I cant wait to get my hands on Awesomenauts just hope it doesnt get pulled due to the publisher filing for bankrupt

  • good stuff this week….im getting Mortal Kombat for my Vita for sure :D! cant wait!

and too all planing to get Max Payne 3 when it comes out….you should play the first two….the game is REALLY good.

  • Will we ever get GTA San Andreas? It’s only the best GTA game to date. Top 5 or better PS2 game as well. Might be one of the best (top 10 at least) video games ever made. I guarantee it’ll outsell every ps2 game in the PSN store.

  • Tots picking up MK Vita and The Legend of Dragoon. Also Probably Max Payne 2. Now get Max Payne 1 up there!

  • mr. Rey Gutierrez,

  • Shoot. I don’t need a digital download of ‘Legend of Dragoon.’ I still have it for my PSOne. Its not like its all that hard to find to have an actual physical collectors copy. I mean really, what’s a digital download of a game going to be work in twenty more years. Uh… Nothing. What’s the advantage to having physical media? In as many years, you get a lot of money because they become rare. Discs that aren’t cared for and scratched get thrown away and those that take care of them have them and they become fewer and fewer and collectors items. I’ve got an EXCELLENT condition Dragons Force from the Sega Saturn and my brother still has mint Panzer Dragoon Saga. There are more benifits to having actual physical copies of things. You what Panzer Dragoon Saga is going for in excellent condition? Its worth $500. What would it be worth if it were a digital copy…. Absolutely nothing. Buy the physical media while you can because soon they’ll become mint condition antiques.

  • except for, the part that digital media is also an original game and only who bought can have access…you got a point though….

  • i am sad only with the actual situation of ps vitas online store, so little releases, few psp games, is that hard to maintain at least 80% of the classic of psp, this could make me wait a little more, since the releases for ps vita are coming with a LONG space between them…

    ^^

    tks all of you

    TERRAPHOX

  • Looks like more people want to play Ps2 and Ps1 games more than Ps3 games! Thats sad! Lets release more PS3 games on PSN please! If I wanted to play old games I would have an old system hooked up! I don’t care about last gen! The past is the past, please focus on this gen!

  • Legend of Dragoon, I’m sold.

  • Nice drop but i cant help but find it odd that Max Payne 2 finds its way to the PSN before the first one. Oh well. Now just get Wing Commander 3 on there and ill be happy as boobies

  • Alright seriously; What in the hell is going on with Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock? Is ANYONE at all going to say a word on this? It was supposed to come out in March and then got pushed for an April release. Now April is just about done and we’re going into May and still no release. Can we get some sort of update on wtf is going on instead of just pretending you don’t see the comments about the game every week? Come on already.

  • The Legend of Dragoon!!!!!! freaking awesome :D

can Sony release past PS2/PS1 games that were exclusive on other regions??

i want to play Shinobido Way of the Ninja for the PS2 which the EU exclusive had back then.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nE3xLOdnLhw

i really really love the atmosphere and music in this game.

while the release of Shinobido 2 for the PS Vita gives me more hope for the franchise next step, i definitely want to play their past games just to experience it at the beginning.

i mean the PSN store had a Japanese PS1 classic import section, why can’t the PS2 classics have one too??

plus this will also give other games that never came to the US a chance to shine like KOF 2002UM, Michigan: Report From Hell, Melty Blood games and etc.

  • Here is the thing. We are happy with this update especially PS2 classics and LEGEND OF DRAGOON finally. The problem lies in one thing and one thing only……..When can we play PSONE CLASSICS ON OUR VITAS? Seriously, our gorgeous oleds need to show the amazing art and colours of Legend of dragoon, Crash, Spyro, FFs, MGS and the like. Why wait till E3? You know that there are minimal hacks with the PS1 games that had no online capabilities at the time. Mr Yoshida did shut down the PS2 classics dream on the Vita but CONFIRMED the PS1 games and EU.Blog said that it was coming soon. A game leaked onto PS Vita EU store recently aswell. To coincide with this fantastic RPG Legend of Dragoon that Sony should do a franchise reboot because the idea is too cool we should have this feature ASAP. Love the update. Legend of Dragoon day 1 and MK Vita is day one. Awesomenauts looks interesting aswell.

  • Sid and Morgan said on Twitter that it should be Max Payne 1, not 2. Although I hope we get both. And I agree more PS3 digital full releases but PS1 and PS2 have their digital wants as well. Besides when you’re stuck in the throes (sp?) of a digital collection the tendenancy is to go all out.. (No I’m not googling that exact phrase! F&Lin LV)

  • Ahh forgive that link, didn’t notice the 3rd down reply..sorry.

  • Awesome that is some great drops :) Especially Legend of Dragoon i never beat the second disc on because it was scratched or something but finally i can beat it all the way through besides beating one disc lol

  • @42: The likelihood of an app developer making games is slim and vise versa. Them making apps for the PSVita isn’t stopping games from being made.

I bought a PSVita for all the things it can do in the future. Which includes applications. You may not want them, but may do. And it makes the PSVita a lot more appealing overall to have as many possible features as possible via applications.

Deal. Games take time, and we’ve gotten some almost every week since the PSVita launched. Which is good.

  • There should be more PS3 Full Games on PSN like Skyrim, Dark Souls, Batman …

PS One Classics for Vita should be live already, please.

  • I really REALLY hope the issues with Awesomenauts publisher don’t prevent it from releasing. That makes me sad. I really really REALLY want this game.

I will gladly buy it if I have to. I don’t need it free. I just need it. D:

  • @#83 Batman Arkham City is coming May 15th to PSN, unless it gets changed.

Link: (I promise an age appropriate one this time ;))

  • it is about time legend of dragoon is released now i just hope its not over priced on the psn 9.99 i can deal with :)

  • I’m sorry i can’t read with all the blood on the screen here let me clean it!! FATALITY!!!!!! MORTAL KOMBAT ON THE GO!!! HELL YEAH! ANYONE WILLING TO TAKE A FATALITY ADD ME ON PSN and on the message please indicate that you saw my ID on this blog. i get a lot of friend requests. thank you! :D

  • sevyne, the developer for the Dr. who game is Supermassive games. You can check their site for info. They talk about a limited retail release whatever that means.

“New Doctor Who game The Eternity Clock will be getting a limited retail release on PS3.

Amazon are taking pre-orders for the game with a price point of £17.99. The official box art for the game has also been revealed.

The game will still be digitally released on the PlayStation Store.

There is still no word on the actual release date. The PlayStation exclusive was originally set for March, but later delayed until sometime in April.

There is only next week left for a release on the store now. Could another delay be on the cards?”

Now, as for a NA release, who knows, but I seriously doubt it will be retail, more likely a download only.

  • Max Payne and Rayman 2 are perfect examples of games that should be getting recompiled code with re-encoded assets, not emulated releases. The original Max Payne on iPad will look/sound better than the emulated sequel, which is, quite frankly, embarrassing for Sony. Rayman 3 HD looked/sounded great and supposedly sold well due to great reviews — why cheap out on Rayman 2 with emulation? Shame on Ubisoft for this one. Choosing emulation wouldn’t be as big of a deal if Sony’s own PS2 emulator did upscaling and MLAA like the open source PS2 and Xbox1 emulators. The result is mostly free advertising for people to purchase better looking versions on other platforms, or to pirate game images and play them under a better emulator.

If Rockstar is paying attention, I’d love to see a proper recompile/re-encode of The Warriors. My husband and I loved playing it in 720p on our Xbox1, and an “HD” version that played in 1080p with 320kbps Ogg, uncompressed/true color textures, and MxAA would be awesome. I’d gladly pay $15 for that! Also, still waiting on Bully HD with Move support :)

  • PS2 classic I want to see is The Bards Tale. That was a fun game!!

  • @Sid, how much will Battlefield: Bad Company 2 cost?

  • Legend of Dragoon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @65, thanks for the info!

  • Hmm never played the console version of MK, not really a big fan of the series, but its something for the Vita so im happy. LEGEND OF DRAGOON. this game has finally come out and all i can say is that its about time. Getting it and playing it on my ps3. About the only thing that would make this update perfect is to have ps1 support on the Vita. I hate to be rude but is there any reason why this still hasnt been released? i assume something bad must have happen? i mean this has been worked on since before the Vita has been officially release so i would think it would have been done by now since psp had it.

Its just Sony claim “soon” and that has past at least in my book.

  • Can we have more PlayStation 2 Classics quicker pleaseeeeeeeeeee;)

  • It never fails, EVERY post there are a bunch of people freaking out about what little content is available for the Vita. It honestly isn’t that hard to figure things out…If you want a ton of content, DON’T buy a recently released console of any sort. If you want the newest and “greatest” thing, suck it up and wait until they release the content you want…it will take awhile, it isn’t something people can just create in five minutes.

As for this weeks releases…hoping that Sniper Elite gets a download…rather not pick it up from the store. Great demo and what not, but the amount of content that looks to be available in it simply isn’t worth buying the entire disc.

Also might have to pick up Legend of Dragoon since I really haven’t heard anything bad about it, but I’ve heard a ton of great things about it even to this day.

  • Why doesn’t Sony pick up publishing rights for Awesomenauts or approach Romino to self publish on PSN in exchange for timed exclusivity? This is the problem with the people at PSN, you have no mettle, no enterprise. Strike while the iron is hot!

Also check out my list on the forums of the great indie games Sony should get on PSN before the competition gobbles them up.
