The Drop: Week of April 30th 2012 New Releases

This week’s The Drop returns with a gangbuster lineup of games on PS Vita, PSN and PS3 — including PSone and PS2 classic gems. Mortal Kombat on PS Vita brings the full PS3 experience and uppercuts it straight into the palm of yours hands courtesy of developer NetherRealm Studios. Packed with the full content of the PS3 game, plus an exclusive PS Vita Challenge Tower, new retro character costumes, all four DLC kombatants, touchscreen fatalities and more.

Hardcore FPS fans will be served with a three main entrees of destruction with Battlefield 2: Bad Company, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops. Both Call of Duty titles come fully packaged with DLC content, and all three FPS juggernauts are PS3 digital downloads. On a special note, make sure to return tomorrow morning at 8 AM PST, and join God of War: Ascension game director Todd Papy, and our very own Jeff Rubenstein for a special live-stream event, straight from Sony Santa Monica Studios.

Enjoy this week’s The Drop.

PlayStation Vita

Mortal Kombat (Digital and GameCard) — After centuries of Mortal Kombat, Emperor Shao Kahn has finally defeated Raiden and his allies. Faced with extinction, Raiden has one last chance to save Earthrealm. To undo the Emperor’s victory, he must strike Shao Kahn where he is vulnerable…the Past.

Driven by an all new graphics engine, the fan favorite series is back and presented in more gory detail than ever before. Mortal Kombat (known as Mortal Kombat 9 by the fans) introduces a number of game-play features including tag team and the deepest story mode of any fighting game. Players can choose from an extensive lineup of the game’s iconic warriors and challenge their friends in traditional 1 vs. 1 matches, or take on several new game modes.

PlayStation 3

Sniper Elite V2 — With an emphasis on learning to handle the anticipation and pressure of the hunt, players are forced to use skill, patience and cunning to achieve their missions as they find themselves facing life-altering choices. The celebrated “bullet cam” from Sniper Elite makes its return and will be more gratifying than ever. Skillful shots are rewarded with a slow-motion sequence of the bullet running its full trajectory from barrel to target as well as featuring graphic detail of the effects of the bullet entering and destroying a target.

PlayStation Network

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 — The Bad Company crew again find themselves in the heart of the action, where they must use every weapon and vehicle at their disposal to survive. The action unfolds with unprecedented intensity, introducing a level of fervor to vehicular warfare never before experienced in a modern warfare action game.

Call of Duty: Black Ops w/ First Strike DLC — Hear the call of duty once again with this seventh entry in this blockbuster first-person shooter franchise. Call of Duty: Black Ops takes you deep behind enemy lines into the world of deniable operations as a member of an elite special forces unit engaging in covert warfare, classified operations, and explosive conflicts across the globe. With access to a variety of exclusive weaponry and equipment, your actions will tip the balance during the most dangerous time period mankind has ever known.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 w/ Stimulus Package — Return to today’s war front with the second chapter in the Modern Warfare series. Modern Warfare 2 continues the gripping and heart-racing action as players face off against a new threat dedicated to bringing the world to the brink of collapse. Playing as as Sgt. Gary “Roach” Sanderson, your international squad of elite soldiers battle through harrowing combat scenarios that range from snowy mountaintops in Siberia to the crowded streets of Rio de Janiero, Brazil and beyond, facing a terrorist force hellbent on redefining the boundary lines of today’s modern warfare.

Awesomenauts — Awesomenauts features the most awesome mercenaries in the galaxy in their fight for territorial supremacy. Awesomenauts brings Space frogs with mohawks, giant robots, and lots of other mighty aliens to the two-dimensional console battlefield. Combining classic platforming-action with modern online multiplayer functionality, the action-packed gameplay offers everything the 16-bit generation and modern gamers love.

Disney Universe — Disney Universe a fast-paced multiplayer action adventure game. In the game, players will experience non-stop action through a mix-up of worlds inspired by both animated and live action films from Disney.

Doc Clock: The Toasted Sandwich of Time — Lead kooky inventor Doc Clock and his contemptuous robot, Sack, on their first awesome adventure through time to save Doc’s beloved cat from a prickly fate. Test your creative ability by devising ingenious inventions to overcome improbable obstacles. Then push your piloting skills to the limit as you attempt to steer your crazy contraptions through an insane world of spiky pits, icy chasms and erupting volcanoes, all dominated by technophobic hippy robots.

Max Payne is a relentless story-driven shooter about a man on the edge, fighting for his justice while uncovering plot-twists and twisted thugs in the gritty bowels of New York during the century’s worst blizzard. *Update: Title information has been corrected above, apologies for the confusion.

Rayman 2: Revolution — Ubisoft’s personable and popular cartoon hero is back and more ambitious than ever in the PlayStation 2-exclusive re-imagining, Rayman 2: Revolution. Now in full 3D and blending humor, suspense, and blinding speed, Rayman must escape an intergalactic zoo by using the powers of his still-imprisoned friends to open the door to an even greater power to free them. Unique to the PS2 version of the game are a number of brand new stages, a harder difficulty level, and a progressive upgrade system that gives Rayman a number of abilities not found in other iterations.

  • Nice drop!!!!!!!!

  • so when will i be able to play legend of dragoon on my vita? thats when i will be buying it, and max pain 2 hell ya.

  • These some real ps2 classics! !!!!!!

  • Legend of Dragoon, nice =)

Any chance on a Mortal Kombat Vita demo?

Though anyone that wants Disney Universe should hit up bestbuy’s online store. $8 trumps a digital download (before they are sold out) =p

  • Yeah, seriously when will there be PSOne classic support on the vita? Asked many times by many people, but not even a “we’re working on it” or anything

  • Sexy drop. I like it. But where is my san andreas and vice city?

  • Wow! What a great week! PS2 Classics is going to be more interesting each week. Thanks!

  • Looks like Awesomenauts might not come out at all….. :(

  • thank you sony for more ps1 and ps2 classics but one day could you try to put dragon ball z games on psn

  • Please PS1 support for the psvita!!!!!!
thanks for the ps2 classics, seeing theres a rockstar game why dont put the ps2 gta’s in the store?
Anyone knows how much time left until the psstore updates?

  • Legend of Dragoon, we meet again. <3 You will be mine.

Awesomenauts <3 and I'll probably pick up Mortal Kombat for my PSVita.

  • Legend of Dragoon! Finally! My fourth disc has been broken for years, so THANK YOU SONY.

  • awesome drop! getting LoD for sure! :D. maybe BF: BC2 as well.

what about either as ps2 classics or HD remakes of the Suffering 1 & 2
i would loooooooooooooooove to see those come to the psn in some form!!!!

    keep it up!

  • Will Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning ever be downloadable on PSN?

  • No midnight release for MK? No wonder digital sales are low. I will just got pick it up from a store in the morning.

Still no mention of that Doctor who game. I complain to them on twitter daily. Its like the old saying. You can only polish the game so many times. It is either a turd or a gem.

Max Payne 2 is cool. Rockstar might get the ball rolling on some GTA rerelease too.

  • Nice week of Classics and demos.

I had no idea GT Aacademy would be a standalone PSN downloadable game. I never bought GT5 (the first GT game I didn’t get- didn’t feel like the grind) but I’ll definitely try the demo.

DIRT: Showdown probably should be a PSN title also. A lot of people have turned off the DIRT franchise because of Codemasters DLC shenanigans. But I’ll give the demo a shot.

Great week for PS+ users too. Free Awesomenauts!

Not so great week for Vita users. I don’t have one, but c’mon Sony, let the people play the Classics.

  • An article on IGN says that the publisher for Awesomenauts went bankrupt and the launch of the game is now in jeopardy.

Do you know for sure if Awesomenauts is still coming out this week after that news?

    • I read that. As far as I know — yes. Keep your eyes open for the official PSN store update post this week though.

  • Keep up the PS1 / PS2 goodness. Would love to see you focus on the obscure titles.

  • Glad to see Legend of Dragoon for PSOne Classic.

Would like to know the status of the Vita being able to play PSOne Classics, as I would appreciate being able to play Legend of Dragoon in between sessions of BlazBlue and Mortal Kombat.

Is there a time frame on that update, even if it is in development?

  • wow what about doctor who can someone at sony find out or was the game scrapped?

  • Whats this I hear about Awesomenauts may not be coming out this week because of financial issues? Hope those guys don’t get shut down.

  • PSOne Classics can be played through Remote Play with a PS3 atm, but yeah, I am going to have to agree that support would be lovely specially with Legend of Dragoon. Then again, I could just toss in the disc and remote play it as well.

  • Any news of the Gotham Imposters rodeo pirate DLC?

  • To everyone asking for PSone classic support, I remember reading somewhere that one PSone game in Europe could be played on the Vita, but performance was very subpar.

  • Very nice drop.

    LoD was way over due.

  • so awesomenauts is still coming out this week? i’ve heard the developer is in some trouble now and the game might never see digital shelves anymore.

  • Great drop this week. I’m definitely in for Legend of Dragoon. I’ll probably end up getting Mortal Kombat for the Vita as well. Speaking of the Vita, how about enabling PS1 support so you can quit lying to us like you have been since before launch. I want to play Legend of Dragoon on my Vita!

  • Max Payne 2 just in time for Max Payne 3 :)

Also, Legend of Dragoon! A great week for classics.

  • I thought Disney Universe was coming the 15th when it said it on the PS+ preview? Not interested but this has me worried about the Rayman Origins sale. Can you confirm that it’s the 29th of May as you corrected? Really want that game, just got myself a card but I past the $15 border to get some FFXIII-2 DLC, will be getting another card by the end of the month though =) I love FFXIII-2! Rayman Origins is going to make me smile a lot, can’t wait to have it in my hands. Well, not really since it’s digital, uh how about in front of my eyes? haha $15 is a steal!

  • Mortal Kombat, Legend of Dragoon, Max Payne 2!

  • wait has anyone managed to get remote play to work outside of their house with a great wifi connection? Just doesnt seem to work for me. I have autostart and autosign in on and everything. How do u get it work?

  • Max Payne 2? Damn I thought we were getting the first one. The good one.

  • how big will the Mortal Kombat ps vita digital version be? i only have the 8gb memory card so i want to see how big it is.

also if i buy two psn cards can i use that to buy Mortal Kombat off the ps store from the vita?

  • @KwietStorm I was hoping they have both Max Payne 1 & 2 despite 3 coming out soon.

  • Didn’t the Euro store get the first Max Payne, and for free with PS+? Wack.

  • Nice! Legend of the Dragoon knocks another classic RPG off of the need-on-PSN list. Suikoden II next please?

  • I truely hope Awesomenauts comes out on Tuesday that’s all i’ve been talking about to everyone and so excited seeing a MOBA game on the PS3 :D

  • The network’s gonna be crawling on Tuesday thanks to Dragoon coming out.

  • Wait. i heard that on the PlayStation Blogcast that it was Max Payne and not Max Payne 2

  • Please bring Rayman and the rabbids!!! :D

  • Great looking Drop! Here are a few things we VIta owners have been asking for for a VERY long time:

    1. PSOne support on Vita.
    2. MORE supported digital PSP games, there are HUNDREDS of them if only we can play them.
    3. PS3 titles that can be played on the Vita via Remote Play.
    4. MORE AAA Vita games, NOT APPS! If we wanted apps, we would have gotten an iPhone!

I almost bought myself a Nintendo 3DS this weekend because of frustration! Instead I just bought Unit 13. :)
Please forward this feedback Rey. Thanks! :)

  • hey Rey i wanna ask you a question , can we play psvita ad hoc games using adhoc party ? i’m trying to play modnation racers road trip ad hoc using adhoc party on the ps3 but i cant find a single person who owns the game lol

  • HECK YES for Max Payne 2. I really wanted to play that.

  • Let me guess…Like the Final Fantasies, LoD will be $9.99, right?

  • When will the TimeSplitters games be released as PS2 Classics?

  • HaHaa!!!! LOD you will be mine er…again, thanks Sony.
