The Drop: Week of February 6th 2012 New Releases

Sports! Apparently there’s a huge sporting event happening today? I’m not sure, something about Giants from New York? Anywho, I’m rooting for Mecha Godzilla.

The Drop this week is nearly as big as Super Bowl XLVI, with a massive blow-out of PS3 Blu-rays, PSN digital releases and a PS2 classic. Speaking of classics, the Jak and Daxter Collection arrives this week on Blu-ray as a full packaged HD triple-combo, or single jabs as individual purchases on PSN.

Also, it was a pleasure joining the stage with David Jaffe and members of Eat Sleep Play last Thursday at the Twisted Metal community event, where we raffled tons of prizes and booed each winner onto the stage. A big thank you to PlayStation fans that made it out and turned it into an amazing experience!

Hit the jump and bask in the glory of over ten PlayStation games on this week’s The Drop.

PlayStation 3

The Jak and Daxter Collection — The Jak and Daxter Collection features all three best-selling PlayStation 2 classic hits — Jak and Daxter, Jak II and Jak 3 — fully remastered in high definition and stereoscopic 3D. This collection follows fan-favorite Jak and his sidekick Daxter through a series of action-packed adventures. The Jak and Daxter Collection blends action, shooting, driving, and platforming into one complete PS3 package.

  • JAK AND DAXTER: (Available on PSN) While exploring some ancient ruins on a forbidden island off the coast, Jak’s best friend, Daxter, is knocked into a vat of Dark Eco–a terrifying and deadly substance that could corrupt the world forever — transforming him into a weasel-like rodent. The village sage, Samos Hagai, tells Jak that there’s only one person who holds the secrets to transforming Daxter back. Now the pair must set out on a quest in search of a wise old sage who has the power to restore Daxter to his former self.
  • JAK II: (Available on PSN) In this darker themed follow-up to Jak and Daxter, hero Jak tries to control the dark eco injected into his system and, with his sidekick Daxter, attempts to thwart the tyrannical powers ruining Haven City. Players earn the chance to wield four heavy-duty weapons, they can jack any vehicle in the massive open city, and they have a chance to use a jetboard to navigate special platform levels.
  • JAK III: (Available on PSN) Jak and his faithful companion Daxter are exiled to the unforgiving wasteland, where survival of the fittest is the law of the land. But deadly lands and dangerous creatures are only the beginning. Soon, the worst nightmare imaginable finds Jak’s world, threatening to annihilate all life with eternal darkness… This third chapter offers an exciting new open world that stretches from the farthest reaches of the wasteland to the strife-torn heart of the city.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning — An open-world action RPG, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is set in Amalur, a rich and deeply immersive world underpinned by 10,000 years history, created by 22 time New York Times bestselling author, R.A. Salvatore. Immersing players in a rich, living, breathing open-world dripping with magic and rife with danger, underpinned by strong storytelling, Reckoning lets players define their destiny as they engage in intense action combat while exploring the huge, vibrant and varied world of Amalur as envisioned by the visionary creator of Spawn and acclaimed artist, Todd McFarlane.

Designed by open-world RPG legend Ken Rolston, Reckoning offers players unparalleled choice in a world of infinite possibility. Together, the visionaries and development team behind Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning are creating a game that aims to forever change the RPG genre.

The Darkness II — The Darkness II takes players down a brutal and personal path as Jackie Estacado, wielder of The Darkness — an ancient and ruthless force of chaos and destruction. Based on the supernatural horror comic book series created by Top Cow Productions, Inc., The Darkness II breaks out of the sea of conventional first-person shooters with its fervid Quad-Wielding gameplay, which will allow players to slash, grab, and throw objects and enemies with their Demon Arms while simultaneously firing two weapons. The game is layered with the use of dark versus light, steeped in deep and twisted storytelling, and engulfed in stylistic violence that is visualized through a hand-painted graphic noir technique that stays true to its comic book origins.

It’s been two years since Jackie Estacado, now the Don of the Franchetti crime family, used The Darkness to kill the men responsible for his girlfriend’s murder. He’s been unable to shake the memory of Jenny’s death since bottling up his supernatural power, and now The Darkness wants out. A sudden, unprovoked attack on Jackie’s life heralds the start of a full-scale mob war, which has clearly been orchestrated by some outside force. The botched attempt opens the door for The Darkness to reemerge, and sets Jackie on a journey to hell and worse, as he unravels the mystery behind the attack and the motivations of The Darkness itself.

  • You know what I want to see is Kingdom Hearts Series for the PS2 Classics category. That means 1,2, and Re: Chain of Memories. PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Stop the Killzone and Legend of Dragoon b***hing please. There are many PS2 games I want too but they can’t please everyone. I wanted Godhand and Odin Sphere and I got Godhand and Odin Sphere. i also want Okami, Psychonauts, Dark Cloud and Viewtiful Joe but you don’t see me whining about it .

  • Sooooooo, We gonna be getting any confirmation on the following PS1 Classics?

    Legend of Legaia
    Brave Fencer Musashi
    Azure Dreams
    Legend of Dragoon
    Megaman Legends 1-2
    Megaman X 4-6

Also considering how weak the Anniversery Box of 3DS Kingdom hearts announcement, how about we get some confirmation on a possible Final Mix versions HD Remastering Kingdom Hearts 1 + 2?

Plus sorry about 10 bucks for a 30 minute out dated over a decade old arcade game? No maybe 3 bucks, but not for 10 sorry.

  • This Tuesday will be glorious. Jak Collection, Darkness II, and Fallout: NV Ultimate Edition….

  • Sports? Whats that? Probably nothing that would interest me.

So moving right along, this weeks lineup looks avoidable. I don’t mind though since I have a huge backlog of games. Nice to see a PS2 legacy game coming but still nothing for PS1 or PS1 Imports? That gap between the JP PS Stores PS1 section and ours isn’t getting any smaller.

Here’s to hoping the last(?) Motorstorm Apocalypse DLC making its way out this week.

  • My first and hopefully last complaint. Please do something about the playstation 3d display blanking problem. I bought one 7 days ago and I am taking it back Monday.

  • Where’s twisted metal 1? I’ve been waiting for that ps1 classic since it was rated on esrb months ago. Tekken 3 would be killer, too.

  • any updates on new future upgrades for the ps3 firmware? let us know! were still waiting on other big new sony exclusives!

  • Will we be able to play the Jak and Daxter games on Vita when it comes out?

Also, is there a reason as to why Sony doesn’t just come out with a firmware update to make it so their consoles can play PS2 games? Not trying to harp or flame or anything I’m just wondering. Thanks.

  • Guys, what happened to Killzone PS2 and why didn’t it release on 1/24?

  • I want Croc: Legend of Gobbos, if only

  • Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven in PS2 Classics PLS PLS PLS!!!!!

  • I am curious, has Sony ever thought about maybe giving PS Plus subscribers discounts on movies as well as games?

  • Why are people complaining about Legend of Dragoon. When did that become a great game that people are like I REALLY WANT THAT GAME? I mean of the metacritic The SpongeBob SquarePants: Movie is BETTER then Legend of Dragoon by 1 point. So, There it average not great.

Probably get that get the The Jak and Daxter Collection, Shank 2 and the Simpsons Game on the PSN store (I’m lazy and fused with my couch to change disc) since I’m getting the other two retail games on the other system (SORRY SONY)

If I was to complain is that every retail game should be downloads but, I’ll doubt that happen since there’s music CD’s. Wait there really are places that sell those? I really don’t understand why this can’t come true

  • Hiya, Rey!
Since you mentioned Catherine, lemme ask you something nice:
Try talking to the Atlus guys about releasing Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne in the PS2 Classics section. It doesn’t even need to be remade in HD or anything. This game is a blast! I’d buy it for $20 given the chance, since my original disk got all scratched up and I couldn’t finish the game…
If they like the idea, maybe it will serve as inspiration for both Digital Devil Saga titles. An HD collection for them would be SOOOO good!
Also, ask Level-5 if they are interested in releasing their titles on PSN too. HD versions of Dragon Quest VIII or Rogue Galaxy would be an AMAZING feat given their magnitude and their reputation sets a precedent for bajillions of sales.

  • Rayman Origins on the american psn PLEASE…any news about that?

  • Rey any chance we can get Dragon quest 8 on PSN??

  • Ray I gotta say your the best! “No Homo” Wished I could of went to austins social club!

  • Sorry guys, I don’t think Jak and Dexter will be playable on the PSVita. Too different an engine for it too work I’d say.
One day they’ll get it to work, same with the engine for Tomba and Dragoon(albet I never got the “hype”some felt for it).

As for The Simpsons video game, I’m waiting in anticipation for the Tuesday update to go up.
For those who’ve never stepped into an arcade you’ve possibly missed out on what is the best Simpsons game to date. The full on beat em up was worth the quarters then and hopefully has held up reasonably well.

  • All three Fatal Frame games.
    Ape Escape PSone Classic.
    Metal Gear Solid VR Missions.

    Come on, now.

  • You forgot to add Fallout New Vegas: Ultimate Edition

  • Are you guys going to make the new Twisted Metal available on the PS store?

  • Oh if you guys get Kingdom Hearts on the PSN store (Final Mix perferred) Then yeah, then and only then will I buy a PS2 classic. I know how much Square Enix loves pricing their PS1 games $10, so they shouldn’t have a problem putting Kingdom Hearts 1 + 2 on the store for $10 each.

  • I’ll take the liberty of answering DuffBeerLight. So @DuffBeerLight, this ones for you, though I don’t work at Sony but, its sort of a given. Chances are, I’m almost spot on. So here you go.

@DuffBeerLight I wouldn’t plan on it bro. The Uncharted games span nearly 25GB of single-layer disc space which means it crowds Sony’s space and your HDD space. They’re huge games. Heavy Rain could likely be a 50GB dual-layer disc. Have you any idea how long it would take to download a game that massive? We’re not talking about Xbox 360 ports of games that PS3 gamers are forced to suffer mediocrity with, with a tiny game being 8GB maybe 9GB max. You’re talking games that are twice or four times the size of those. It would take a long time to download those buddy. Sorry. I wouldn’t plan on it.

  • At least not on PlayStation 3.

  • Yay Jak and daxter !!!! and full Catherine :D fun week for me

  • If you guys want Killzone so much, go buy a PS2 and the game itself. As for me, I’m getting Jak and Daxter Collection then saving for the Vita

  • Hi, why won’t you guys from sony give us the choice of the game of the month for PSN Plus users like 3 or 4 chioces and we vote, the winner would be the game of the month in the PSN. I know it’s still not going to please everyone but it’s a good way for us to be at least participating to please de most users. (sorry my bad english)

  • I know the PS+ this month is going to be great, and the new releases look pretty good. However, I as well as a bunch of other people want to know where Killzone 1 is at. It seems you keep avoiding this question all together. You reply on other comments, but never on one that asks where Killzone 1 is at. Your community keeps you alive, so why not at least answer a question a lot of the community is asking?

  • I know the possibility of it is near 0% but HD PS3 remakes of Kingdom Hearts I and II would be pretty nice.

  • Excuse me, there seems to be a mistake. You put SpongeBob as a ps2 classic instead of something worth a crap like…… Killzone, GTA III, or GTA Vice City. You know one of the games people will actually buy and have already been rated by ESRB for release on PSN or should I SEN. Come on, SpongeBob? Really?

  • when will monster rancher 3 and 4 be on psn as PlayStation 2 Classics.

  • Still waiting on the MGS HD collection to hit the PSN… any word on that yet?

  • I would really wanna see the simpsons hit and run some time soon

  • yes when will monster rancher 3 and 4 be on psn as PlayStation 2 Classics.

  • Tony Hawk Project 8 and Duke Nukem Forever on Psn please :)

  • Hey Rey,

Thanks for letting my girl and I try out Gravity Rush at the TM event. Much respect man.

  • It’s Jak II and Jak 3, not Jak II and Jak III…

  • Any chance of Okami getting the HD treatment?

If not, please please please please PLEASE let Capcom know that a lot of people would love to see the series revived on consoles. An Okami sequel/prequel on PS3 or PS4 (and Xbox 360/Xbox? and WiiU if necessary) would be absolutely fantastic.

After seeing the gorgeous graphics of Rayman Origins, it made me want a new Okami even more than I already had.

  • I really enjoy reading all the comments and suggestions. I have a couple of good ones: Summoner and The Mark of Kri remade in HD ( trophy support would be nice for both games ). Think it over and you too will see where I am…….thanks for reading all our requests.

  • Sponge………;.Bob…… Way to zone in on ours wants and desires!!!!!….. >:C Im kinda thinking What the heck!!! I mean i know goo things come to those who wait but cmon!!!! you have like all the Final Fantasy’s(not 10 but i know itss getting an HD remake) yet the only Persona games are for PSP same with(LAME) I am in desperate need of a persona fix(without buying a new PS2 or a PSP) I mean i would even drop 30 bucks for one of those game HONEST i would. Legend of Legaia ,Legend of Dragoon would amazing, also im sure its not your guys decisions but the Dead risings would be spectacular. Also cool would be a residednt evil out break file one and two with the added help of the PSN online playing function tho i am content with that being a fantasy

  • I think the Spongebob release is absolutely hilarious, even if it isn’t exactly incredible or anything. I am absolutely THRILLED at the digital release of Catherine (I was actually just thinking about this earlier, even) and especially the Jak and Daxter collection, not to mention how awesome the Simpsons arcade game is just great. Everyone else is just mad that you guys were as master trolls with the PS2 classic.

  • @33
<3 The Koudelka and Shadow Hearts references <3
Though I am really hoping for a HD remake with Trophies. I still have all 4 on disc in mint condition. I really wish that would happen, or another title in the series too! Though since Aruze broke up, I doubt it will ever happen unless NISA, AKSYS, or maybe XSEED picked it up. I guess being able to play it on my Vita would be great though.

I don't want to complain though, We PS+ subscribers have good this week, so I am happy. Plus I still have Amalur, FFXIII-2 and SCV to keep me busy.

  • Does “Gotham City Impostors” have platinum trophy .

  • @61: 1) Legend of Dragoon is a PSone game.
    2) Scores don’t matter
    3) People have been wanting Legend of Dragoon on the PSN store for years.
    4) It’s a great game.
    5) It’s so popular that every time a rumor pops up about a “surprise” announcement it’s one of the go to games. (either remake or sequel)
    6) Shoo.

  • No need for a link to a forum post. Just google “playstation 3d display blanking problem” and you will see hundreds of complaints!! And don’t act like you havent heard of it there is a forum thread about 20 pages long in the psn forum!

  • can´t wait too play it. love jak <3 :) hop it well come to psn!

  • A R&C PS2 HD collection would be cool:P I hope that comes out 1 day(+ TimeSplitters HD collection to, i am sure someone can do it) (+ i won’t say ‘Bring back PS2 playback to a PS3…again x1 billion times now) LoL

  • @ morris1129

i have a ps 3D diplay monitor, and my monitor “blink” too since the first day i bought it
it loose signal turn completly black for like 1 second or 2, and got signal back right after.
it’s really annoying when im playing like black ops while killing zombies on round 39.
i tough i was the only one with that problem, now i know that’s a specific problem from this monitor.
