The Drop: Week of February 6th 2012 New Releases

Sports! Apparently there’s a huge sporting event happening today? I’m not sure, something about Giants from New York? Anywho, I’m rooting for Mecha Godzilla.

The Drop this week is nearly as big as Super Bowl XLVI, with a massive blow-out of PS3 Blu-rays, PSN digital releases and a PS2 classic. Speaking of classics, the Jak and Daxter Collection arrives this week on Blu-ray as a full packaged HD triple-combo, or single jabs as individual purchases on PSN.

Also, it was a pleasure joining the stage with David Jaffe and members of Eat Sleep Play last Thursday at the Twisted Metal community event, where we raffled tons of prizes and booed each winner onto the stage. A big thank you to PlayStation fans that made it out and turned it into an amazing experience!

Hit the jump and bask in the glory of over ten PlayStation games on this week’s The Drop.

PlayStation 3

The Jak and Daxter Collection — The Jak and Daxter Collection features all three best-selling PlayStation 2 classic hits — Jak and Daxter, Jak II and Jak 3 — fully remastered in high definition and stereoscopic 3D. This collection follows fan-favorite Jak and his sidekick Daxter through a series of action-packed adventures. The Jak and Daxter Collection blends action, shooting, driving, and platforming into one complete PS3 package.

  • JAK AND DAXTER: (Available on PSN) While exploring some ancient ruins on a forbidden island off the coast, Jak’s best friend, Daxter, is knocked into a vat of Dark Eco–a terrifying and deadly substance that could corrupt the world forever — transforming him into a weasel-like rodent. The village sage, Samos Hagai, tells Jak that there’s only one person who holds the secrets to transforming Daxter back. Now the pair must set out on a quest in search of a wise old sage who has the power to restore Daxter to his former self.
  • JAK II: (Available on PSN) In this darker themed follow-up to Jak and Daxter, hero Jak tries to control the dark eco injected into his system and, with his sidekick Daxter, attempts to thwart the tyrannical powers ruining Haven City. Players earn the chance to wield four heavy-duty weapons, they can jack any vehicle in the massive open city, and they have a chance to use a jetboard to navigate special platform levels.
  • JAK III: (Available on PSN) Jak and his faithful companion Daxter are exiled to the unforgiving wasteland, where survival of the fittest is the law of the land. But deadly lands and dangerous creatures are only the beginning. Soon, the worst nightmare imaginable finds Jak’s world, threatening to annihilate all life with eternal darkness… This third chapter offers an exciting new open world that stretches from the farthest reaches of the wasteland to the strife-torn heart of the city.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning — An open-world action RPG, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is set in Amalur, a rich and deeply immersive world underpinned by 10,000 years history, created by 22 time New York Times bestselling author, R.A. Salvatore. Immersing players in a rich, living, breathing open-world dripping with magic and rife with danger, underpinned by strong storytelling, Reckoning lets players define their destiny as they engage in intense action combat while exploring the huge, vibrant and varied world of Amalur as envisioned by the visionary creator of Spawn and acclaimed artist, Todd McFarlane.

Designed by open-world RPG legend Ken Rolston, Reckoning offers players unparalleled choice in a world of infinite possibility. Together, the visionaries and development team behind Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning are creating a game that aims to forever change the RPG genre.

The Darkness II — The Darkness II takes players down a brutal and personal path as Jackie Estacado, wielder of The Darkness — an ancient and ruthless force of chaos and destruction. Based on the supernatural horror comic book series created by Top Cow Productions, Inc., The Darkness II breaks out of the sea of conventional first-person shooters with its fervid Quad-Wielding gameplay, which will allow players to slash, grab, and throw objects and enemies with their Demon Arms while simultaneously firing two weapons. The game is layered with the use of dark versus light, steeped in deep and twisted storytelling, and engulfed in stylistic violence that is visualized through a hand-painted graphic noir technique that stays true to its comic book origins.

It’s been two years since Jackie Estacado, now the Don of the Franchetti crime family, used The Darkness to kill the men responsible for his girlfriend’s murder. He’s been unable to shake the memory of Jenny’s death since bottling up his supernatural power, and now The Darkness wants out. A sudden, unprovoked attack on Jackie’s life heralds the start of a full-scale mob war, which has clearly been orchestrated by some outside force. The botched attempt opens the door for The Darkness to reemerge, and sets Jackie on a journey to hell and worse, as he unravels the mystery behind the attack and the motivations of The Darkness itself.

  • Noticed you imported sonicCD from the segaCD to PS3. How about taking the ultimate classic “Snatcher” from the segaCD to PS3. ;)

  • @97 Actually, that was SEGA, not Sony, but Kojima isn’t with them either, so while it might not be bad to go over and bark up SEGA’s tree, you should probably do the same for Kojima and Konami.

  • I want the vita already, tired of waiting for my pre-order.

  • Rey just wanted to say that i never had the opportunity to play The Bouncer and Legend of dragoon can u pls make this happen in the ps1 and ps2 classics? thanks.

BTW… im mad at sony never doing the update for the ps3 to emulate ps2 games…. i have a bunch of ps2 RPGs there with a broken ps2…. Ps3 has its full potential to emulate ps2 games… :(

  • Where is Brave Fencer Musashi? =(

  • Rey, is this weeks update on the PSN or SEN? The blog as a whole has been absent on this topic.

    Mecha Godzilla 1, 2 or 3?

  • I love the Jak games, them getting the HD treatment is good. As for the Legend of Dragoon talk, I don’t really understand why it isn’t on the ps store, as far as legal problems go the game was developed and published by Sony. What legal problems could they possible come across with a game they made and distributed? Also Spongebob as a PS2 Classic is obvious troll. I realize there are certain issues with re-releasing a game like I mentioned above about legal problems but if spongebob is the best you can do don’t even bother.

  • are you kidding me?! SPONGE BOB SQUARE PANTS!!!!!???

  • I still waiting BATTLEFIELD 3 for PSN.

  • I’m glad you guys at Sony continue to provide us with the experience players want! It all helps:D

  • When will House Of The Dead 4 coming out? I know HOD3 is supposed to come out this month, but more excited about the newest one.

  • Not a bad week, probably will pick up the simpsons for the memories. What sony and in fact all content makers / distributors need to realize is, that the longer they take to release the classic games that people love (and in turn can make a profit on) that more consumers will be turning to roms and emulators. Most any basic level PC can run PS1 and PS2 emulators and the roms are out there (or people can use their old discs as well). Now I am in no way advocating the illegal use of emulators and downloading of copyright protected material, but I am trying to make a point for the distributors. We are in an age where every(digital)thing we want is at our fingertips and most of us would like to pay for content, but the longer it takes to get that content legally, the more likely most will turn to illegal means and in the end the distributors (you sony) will see no capital from these classic games. I know there is all the legalese to take care of in getting the games on the psn and testing, but you guys gotta step it up, especially with the billion dollar loss you guys posted this year. My $.02

  • Spongebob, really? How about Dark Cloud?

I would also like to throw in my vote for Legend of Dragoon.

  • Something i think you guys just like to laugh at our face there’s so many ps1 and ps2 game peoples ask for and you guys give us SpongeBob…
I understand sometime it’s hard to get permission to release a game on psn from other publisher or any other reason but when like for Legend of Dragoon for example it’s a game developed by Sony what are the reason that they aren’t released on psn yet ?

  • SSX demo? Any idea when?

  • JAK X PLZ!!!! The collection is not completed without it.

  • @ 111
OMG i totally forgot about dark cloud.
i played that non stop b4 i started playing jak and daxter games.

  • Is there gonna be any difference between the physical and digital version of the Jak collection? Something like the Sly collection having the mini-games on disc, but not for digital. Something like that.

  • Hey Rey,

Please pass along to somebody on getting Shin Megami Tensei: Nocture (PS2) on PSN…………please

  • Hey Whatever Happened to Pixeljunk 4AM or the Portal 2 level creater DLC? also I saw that I am Alive is in xbox’s games promotion for whatever… are we still getting the game at the same time or are they getting some exclusivie time?

  • I’m getting Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning from Gamefly for a $15 discount but other than that the rest of the drop ehhh…

  • Some time ago I saw a post on joystiq teasing a Killzone release on January. I don’t mind when but I would like to know if it’s true? Are KZ1 coming to PSN?

  • hey didn’t you guys at sony already release a demo for cubixx already

  • is The Jak and Daxter Collection going to be in spanish like the ps2 version?

  • nothing for me except shank 2 and the catherine hour long trial

  • How about a votation, or petitions about what gamers want on PS1/PS2 Classics? I think that would be a very good way to release good games on PSN… Please! answer me!

  • You said Catherine will be $39.99. The wonderfully packaged, physical copy of Catherine is available for $39.99 from Amazon. Will you be offering a PS+ discount for it? I’d love to get it from the PSN but right now you’re offering me less for the same price.

  • Woot! Shank 2! That’s next on my list.

  • How about Super Bust a Move for PS2?? I would love to see that one.

  • I have had playstation plus for a year now and Im startin to think its not worth the money anymore. It seems like you guys have forgotten why we got it in the first place. For the free stuff.

  • I’m really really glad you guys are able to release J&D on the PSN at the same time as the retail version. I’m a fan of digital distribution and this is a step in the right direction. It can be frustrating having to wait for a digital version to show up much later than the retail release date. Keep ’em coming!

  • Any new DLC coming (hint….hint…….FF13-2)

  • What about the Level-5 developed “Ni No Kuni Wrath of the White Witch” for PS3. It’s available for pre-order. I want this game, make it happen. Its supposed to release early this year.

  • Glad to be getting the Simpsons arcade for PS+!

Also super excited for the J&D Collection and Gotham City Impostors. The beta for GCI was very fun and was the first time I had fun playing an FPS in a while.

    Thanks Sony!

  • Jak and Daxterrrrrrr :D :D :D :D :D :D:D :D :D :D :D woooohooo!!!!
Im glad catherines being made available digitally too, i was hoping for that to happen so others could enjoy the game as much as i did!

  • Sega CD games that NEED to come to PS3:

    Snatcher Sega CD
    Lunar Sega CD
    Gates of Thunder Sega CD

    Make it happen guys!

  • if you look at every comment could you please respond to me and tell me if you guys would consider putting the getaway 1and 2 on psn classics because i really loved those games and would buy both in a heartbeat

  • Glad to see more PS2 games on PSN even though I wouldn’t call The Sponge Bob Squarepants Movie a PS2 Classic by any means but it’s better than nothing. Also glad to see more PS3 titles offered on PSN. Will be getting Simpsons Arcade. Would love to see the following PS1 games on PSN: Vigilante 8, Vigilante 8 Second Offense and Rogue Trip Vacation 2012 as we really need more car combat games on PSN besides Twisted Metal 2.

  • I really want the Jak and Daxter HD Collection to end up on PS Vita. Pretty please?

  • I would like The Legend of Dragoon and Deception on the network. Heck even to see some sequels the games were awesome

  • First time comment, long time reader. Another amazing update. Also looking forward to this months PS+.
    Great work as always Rey!

  • I just wish I could finally get The Simpson’s arcade game for download. The demo isn’t even available. I question how on top of things the blog is syncing with what’s going on or if the time zones make it more a challenge.

  • Well… with everyone else throwing out completely unrelated requests and demands, let me throw one out that’s slightly more reasonable.

Can you look into working with Capcom to get the Sengoku Basara HD Collection released outside Japan once they release it later this year? I just recently picked up Samurai Heroes, and I love it. When I heard they plan an HD Collection, I thought “This is perfect!”

Please, go harass Capcom about this! More crazy Sengoku action on the PS3 would be much appreciated!

  • I’m definitely glad to be seeing PS2 Classics…but is Spongebob SquarePants REALLY a classic? I would definitely take Dark Cloud 1 and 2, the .hack//G.U. trilogy, the Xenosaga trilogy, Silent Hill 2 and 3, TimeSplitters 2 and so on. The choice for Spongebob is as silly as Nintendo opting to put up Donkey Kong Jr. Math and China Warrior over other games on the Wii’s Virtual Console such as Contra and Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island.

On another note, I definitely dig the $39.99 price for Catherine.

  • No need for the hate about Spongebob – Sony has always been about offering something for everyone, and if you look at this among the other PS2 classics, it rounds that out quite a bit. No need to worry everyone, more is to come!

Thanks for the updates, Rey! I get excited to see what Sony has to offer every week (and what I can take advantage of with my Plus subscription!)

I WOULD like to take this opportunity to put my vote in for the Tomba! games as PS One Classics, though! :)

  • It would just be nice if the new-releases on PSN had a price tag

  • Thanks so much for this update! I can’t wait to relive my youth by playing the Simpsons Arcade game all over again, but this time I’ll actually be able to beat it through the magic of unlimited quarters.

As for what I’d like to see from future releases, I’d really kill for the Zodiac Job System version of Final Fantasy XII. FFXII even already has a widescreen option, making it even more tantalizing for a PS3 release. Persona 3 FES and Persona 4 would also be great because my friends would be able to play these now classic games, which have become quite rare on the Playstation 2.

I appreciate all of the work you guys put into satisfying us each week.

  • I’m more than a little bit confused. So many good titles between the good PS systems. Some genuinely good titles for the PS3 side of it, but as for the others….No PS1 titles which is disappointing but hey whatever. PS2 though, so many good titles. Was beyond overjoyed to see PS2 classics when it arrived. Great titles to start wth but now….with Tak being the last one, and now Spongebob? With so many other amazing options, what is the thinking behind putting this out before so many other AAA games?

  • i finally figured out how to leave a comment . first i would like to say you guys do a great job. im sure its hard to pick from this massive collections of games. i would really like to see victorious boxers for ps2 its really hard to find and it is awesome. oh and onimusha as well great series. thanks.

  • can you plz put legend of legaia for the ps1 and legaia 2 duel saga for the ps2 on the psn
