E3 2010: From the Stage

242 0

We have been blessed with the most dedicated fans in the business and I’d like to take a moment to thank our new members of PlayStation Nation for helping us to achieve nine consecutive months of growth on the PS3 platform. We are constantly looking for new and innovative ways to enhance your entertainment experience on the PS3 and we’re so excited this week to deliver on this promise once again. Today, your PS3 experience already includes Blu-ray games and movies, streamed TV shows and sporting events, and unique original programs, but as we showcased on the E3 stage today, it also delivers cutting edge 3D technology and the most ultra sensory and precise motion gaming solutions available.

Jack Tretton, CEO, SCEA

There is no denying that Sony is the undisputed leader in 3D technology today and we are the only ones to offer an end to end solution to consumers. With four stereoscopic 3D games available for download already, PlayStation is truly leading the effort to bring theater-like experiences into your living room. There are nearly 36 million PS3 units around the world that are 3D ready today and with demos on the show floor that range from Killzone 3 in 3D to Gran Turismo 5 in 3D, you can get a glimpse of what the future holds as we alter what immersive gameplay means with 3D technology.

We are also experiencing tremendous growth on the PS3 platform and have already started the year with huge releases such as MAG, Heavy Rain, God of War III, MLB 10: The Show, and ModNation Racers. Many would call this a blockbuster year, but for us it represents just the first half of what will surely be an onslaught of brand new experiences with the PlayStation Move controller, in addition to richer and deeper experiences from some of our most favorite characters and franchises like The Sly Collection, Twisted Metal, SOCOM 4, inFAMOUS 2, and LittleBigPlanet 2.

We’ve also been working hard to enhance our digital entertainment offerings, which comes packed today with access to live baseball games from MLB.tv, premium original content from HBO, and 23,000 movies and TV shows from all the major networks and studios. We also unveiled PlayStation Plus, an opt-in and add-on service package designed specifically for PlayStation Network’s most avid power users. PlayStation Plus will provide subscribers with added value, access and convenience to special features like discounts on PlayStation Store content, free and exclusive access to select games, full game trials, and much more – all for $49.99 a year. A tremendous value. In the first month alone, you’re getting $49.99 worth of content for free. Existing features and services you enjoy today and have come to expect from PlayStation Network as part of your daily experience, will remain unchanged and free to access.

We set an incredibly high bar last year and we expect to surpass it this year by reaching our goal of 15 million PS3 units worldwide. When we say ‘It Only Does Everything’ we know we’re also making a promise to you, that we will continue to deliver new experiences and entertainment options that you didn’t even know you wanted today and many years from now.

For those of you who were not able to join us at the Shrine auditorium this morning, you can download the full presentation on the PlayStation Network.

I also invite all of you to virtually attend E3 in PlayStation Home where you can view our full presentation an experience a virtual replica of our PlayStation booth.

Thanks,
Jack Tretton

  • I was praying to see Final Fantasy versus XIII, but that didn’t happened. Still, you did great guys. :)

  • Thanks for finally bringing the video service to Canada. I’ll shut up now.

    B.S.
That is unless they decide it should not have that feature anymore. That is what happened with my OtherOS which is why I still have a PS3 on FW 3.15.

  • Great job this year. I’m really excited for the next 12 months. PS+ sounds cool. Will probably sign up, but after getting a few more details.

    PS.
    @6 Agreed.

  • Jack,

Would you kindly explain why The Last Guardian didn’t make an appearance? Please?

  • Good work Jack, Sony was king of E3 bar none

  • Not sure if I heard it right. Did Jack Tretton say the video store was finally coming to Canada? Or did I hear it wrong?

  • What exactly is the PlayStation Blog Share for anyways? Just a distraction? None of the major feature requests from the community have been implemented.

  • And I would like to say thanks to you Mr. Tretton and all the other wonderful people at Sony and studios that work with Sony. As a long time PlayStation fan, I still remember running home from school in’99 and ripping my backpack off and seeing the PlayStation my mom got me and playing the hell out of Tekken 3. I really want to say congrats on another great year guys and the future is looking brighter and even more awesome. And I’m happy to be apart of the millions of other PlayStation gamers that are a part of gaming history. Again from a proud PlayStation fan to the awesome people at Sony, Thank You!!!!

  • Jack,

This was a good conference, but somehow disappointing. Not because of the content, but how you guys decide to show it. There has to be a complete overhaul on how you present your games. There were a lot of games that were “announced” in a software reel (Patapon 3, Echochrome 2, Eyepet PSP, Sly Collection, just to name a few). I thought that by announcing four games before E3, you would make space for new announcements, but instead we got to hear almost everything we had heard before. So in my opinion, announcing them before was a mistake.

The other thing is that there is not organization in the conference, there´s talk about PSN, then PS3 games, then back to PSN, etc. Killzone 3 was shown like 4 times in software reels.

I’m not going to make this longer, but please try to make the following E3’s conference better in substance, more game trailers, better announcements (give more time to games that matter instead of showing them in software reel or just mentioning them), better organization.

    Thanks

  • @53

QQ more about features you don’t use.

  • How… how is it possible for you guys not to release cross game chat?

  • Great conference Jack! It was very exciting. I am hoping to hear more about the subscription service (namely whether or not there will the ability to save games to the cloud) and am glad that movies will come to the Canadian PSN store.

It would have been nice to see some more 3rd party titles that were missing from your presentation (like Castlevania and perhaps Final Fantasy XIII Versus) though…

  • There should be a comma after Tekken 3 lol, but anyway Congratulations again Mr. Tretton and everyone at Sony!

  • Video store in Canada? Some people are going to be really happy around here!

  • @30

Your argument about Live fails, because M$ is charging you $50 a year to just be able to play online. Sony is giving everyone online play for free. The $50 a year is for additional content and features. HUGE difference.

  • no Starhawk… I am disappoint. :(

  • Sony won E3 by lightyears. This will go down in history. I can’t wait for Gran Turismo 5 finally got a relese date. Looking foward to Infamous 2,Portal 2,Metal Of Honor, Little Big Planet 2,Twisted Metal,Dead Space 2,ectect.

  • TheInfectedBy590

    Great show!!!
But the lack of The Last Guardian, Versus XIII and most important: announcement of PS2 Backwards Compatibility displeases me… :'(

  • Awesome E3 there Jack, you were outstanding as usual, I’m looking forward to getting all this great stuff.

Kevin Butler was awesome too, very funny.

  • SONY EPIC WINS THIS E3 SHOW! WAY TO PLEASE ALL THE FANS CAUSAL? HARDCORE? SONY’S GOT YOU COVERED!

  • I personally request more PSN improvements to compensate for Linux removal and a revamped browser.

    where is nintendo anyways? :P

  • Jack, I don’t know if you even see these comments, but I hope you do.

First of all, you guys were a lot better this year than you have been previously. Thanks for not showing charts and graphs and talking too much about numbers.

Second, you really DO need to let Kevin Butler emcee the show next year. The crowd seemed underwhelmed, and he got them energized.

Third, many of us would love it if Sony would stop showing montages and show games one at a time in a more dramatic fashion. Those montages are annoying, and the music is often bleh.

Otherwise, thanks for some cool announcements and neat demos. I’m psyched about PSN+ now.

  • Gaara_Of_TheFunk

Im Proud To Be A PS3 Owner! Jack, You Did An Awesome Job & Kevin Butler Was Hilarous!

  • One question about PSN+, if you subscribe and buy a PSN game with the discount or even if you don’t have a discount, will you still have that content if you end your subscription?

  • DEViLiSHWONDER67

epic wpic win , great show, im a true gamer, been one many many years, ps3 is definately the best GAMING system out of them all and just got better. thanx for removing that feature ya did , making it more safe. psn premium has me sold. as does ps3 3d as soon as i can get my hands on a 3dtv. ps3 just got even better and im excited for the future. thank you sony for making gaming the best it can be. keep up the great work.

  • You guys seriously need to retool how you conduct your E3 presentation. The first half was boring as all hell. It only became decent because you actually showed what little games you had. Also, the only game I’m looking forward to on the PS3, The Last Guardian, is not even in the montage? Yeah, I’m done with this console when I’m done finishing The Last Guardian.

  • There was like 5 minutes of screen time for the PSP…

    :'(

It’s like you’re not caring anymore.

  • Have no idea how the conference could be considered good, ot acceptable for Sony, at all. But glad to see some people enjoyed it. That’s nice.

  • any updates coming to PS3 OS interface?

and any changes coming to PSN that gives it more features like your competitors not just fees?

  • I say Sony won this E3. Finally Valve is making PS3 games and a new Twisted Metal game coming. Plus everything else.

  • the whole ps share site is pure bs. Not a single requested feature has been added yet. Whats the point? Forget ps plus

  • Amazing show guys! truly amazing

  • So Sony gets third parties back on board with the PS3 so much for the Xbox fanboys and their we get content first crap. Now we get Medal of Honor Content first, Mafia 2 content first, and exclusive PS3 only content for games like Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, ToyStory 3, and the like. What a major upset for Microsoft as they held that over our heads for so long.

Now I’m not giving up my PS3 till the bitter end! SONY WON THIS SO HARDCORE It’s not even worth explaining to fanboys. (Nintendo did great as well, but came up a bit short)

  • Excellent conference Jack!

  • Jack! do something with the singstar support in America. Please.

Thanks for everything Jack, and keep the good work. Great show, great games, expecting everything what you said come true (as always :) ).

    Regards!

  • Ummm so because I have a PS3 Eye I don’t get to have Sports Champions free…. thats not cool man.

  • Glad to see Steam Cloud is coming to the ps3. Where is my cross game chat? Im not buying the PSN Plus unless it cross game chat is included.

  • New XMB? social functions for psn+? in-game chat? resistance 3? ffvii remake? new psn services? where is all that? new games? bah…

  • The show was good and all, but the utter lack of The Last Guardian left me feeling bummed.

  • TH3_Hammer_29 first of all Jack wasn’t putting down Microsoft charging $50 bucks and secondly sony is not charging us to play online, but Microsoft charging you to play online. p.s. ppl they ran out of time

  • So Sony blatantly copies the Nintendo Wii controller and then says that they are innovative? I don’t think the word means what they think it means.

  • One more thing, good job *SONY*

  • Video store in Canada! This is what I’ve wanted for so long, and it’s finally here.

  • Wow, yeah… This E3 really blew me out of the water.

This has forced my enmity to flow from my body and fill with gooey love. No longer do I care about clinging to 3.15, Sign me up for 50 bucks a year of crap.

Phh right. Did I hear right that PSN+ also includes AUTOMATIC UPDATES? So I’d have to give up something valuable to me, plus money, and also the chance that Sony will automatically update something else away without my wishes? ****n’ heck.

Well, at least you’ve got Portal 2. So Nintendo didn’t annihilate you, it was just a decisive rout.

  • Thanks Jack I hope to be at Playstation one day. Thanks to everyone at Sony to making the Playstation Platform the way to go. You rock Jack Tretton, nice E3!

  • I had hopes for a PSP2 annoucement but no such thing yet. Twisted Metal stole the show even though we won’t get it till next year I’m still hyped about it. Hopefully bigger news during the Tokyo Game Show.

  • I’m a die hard playstation fan. No matter how mediocre it was I still love what Playstation has in store for us. I already have a list of games to but even though only 3 of them actually showcased at the conference. No matter what I’ll continue to support playstation because like you said Jack “We here at Playstation are all about genre defining kick-ass games”

    Thanks

  • please can i get a date on movie rental service in canada:) so i can finally throw away my xbox 360

  • I’m really pissed about buying Qore 2 months ago and now I have to pay full price for PSN plus…
