The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the “Install Other OS” feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.
In addition, disabling the “Other OS” feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.
Consumers and organizations that currently use the “Other OS” feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available;
- Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
- Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
- Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
- Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later
For those PS3 users who are currently using the “Other OS” feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the “Other OS,” as they will not be able to access that data following the update.

If this fix truely fixes the hacking, i am all for it. I bought this machine to get away from pc hackers in gaming, Sony should be thoroughly disgraced if they did not do this.
The hacking on this game system has become so outrageous that it is ruining the gaming experience for everyone. Another operating system, Why? who really uses another operating system on a gaming console for anything less then hacking.
If you cant play the game with out a hack, do what the rest of us with out hacks do, play the game and increase your skills. anyone that would complain about fixing an issue like this, is obviously ticked they will no longer be able to lay the game with out being embarrassed.
Sony spends a lot of money developing the systems they do, and they dont want sale to drop because of hackers.

just successfully updated … negative effect on my PS3 expierience ? NONE . but any way I think i owe an apology to sony staff for getting a little terse yesterday at the playstation facebook page . i needed to use the knowledge center through my ps3 and text wasnt appearing . rendering the knowledge center useless . it kinda miffed me . I kinda got lost in my frustration and forgot that The entire site is going through a makeover and i need to be patient ., although i till believe upgrading the browser should have coincided and been priotized along with site changes . I see the knowledge center is working again and i can once again sign in to the blog . thank you all for your hardwork and from now on untill the browser gets revamped Im just going expect occasional probs and keep my mouth shut .
Seriously Sony, why couldnt this wait until the next actual update, then I wouldn’t mind downloading. I guess I will wait for the next update, assuming it is an update, not another downgrade.

The only game I really play online is GTA IV, since every other game whose online mp modes I’ve tried playing(Warhawk, Uncharted 2)is populated by nerds and geeks who spend 1000’s of hours practicing and playing it 24/7 who have no life otherwise.
I play games to have fun. Being trounced in a game within half a second of initially spawning is NOT fun.
That’s why I play GTA IV, since I can use a vehicle and run down opponents to make up for my lack of weapon skills. People try and kick me all the time because of how I play, yet in the game’s title is the word AUTO.
I suppose I’m supposed to NOT use a car in the game and just play it like COD4? F that. I’ll play my games how I want to.
But the fact that even slim owners(like me) have to update this useless f’n update has me re-thinking my gaming habits seriously.
Why do WE have to update the system Sony?
Personally, I hope Sony ends up as the next Sega and SOON, since they’ve been pounding consumers in the cornhole enough already this gen.

The only thing I feel they owe me is the full feature set I paid for when I bought the system.
People who have their basic needs fulfilled look to luxury and comfort. Those who cant make out certain basic needs use optimism to make the day go by without fear or heartache. Yes, it is unfortunate that some people can’t fulfill certain basic necessities in life, and it’s even worse that people complain about their luxury items, but being grateful doesn’t mean putting up with garbage. Being grateful means thanking every moment that you’re not worse off than you were 1 second ago. This is luxury, but I still feel things like this CAN be fought over. People thrive off of doing things they so desire. If they want Linux on their PS3’s, then so be it.
And I HATE people who just say Americans are ungrateful… what’s the point? I’m in Canada at the moment, but I get that too.

It’s the same for me its not like all my life is just playing video games so the casual update that improves absolutely nothing or screws up something I never truly cared for. Now that they taking away something I use frequently for purposes that are not for hacking and still aren’t used for hacking. At the same time I can’t deal without MW2, Killzone 2, Resistance 2, LBP, and other online games (yes MW2 is on XBOX but I’m not wasting $265 just to play a game I already own). So what am I left to do?

I was one of them until this year when I learned a bit about the massive amount of DRM abuse going on inside the PS3.
I’m putting 2 of my 3.15 PS3s up on Ebay tonight, 1 a 60gig fat and the other a new slim.
I’m going to keep a 3.15 fat with linux installed on it in the bedroom as a Bluray player and psuedo PC from now on, and I won’t be buying any Sony products at all, EVER… I was actually considering dropping a chunk on a Bravia for my father in law but it looks like I’ll be going elsewhere for my LCD.
I will also be installing the custom firmware if it is made available. Before I had no intent of even thinking about CFW but now, I want to get what I payed launch price for.

Regardless of any progress made with the simple hack thus far, surely you’ve heard of mod chips. They were common in previous generations of consoles and involved soldering.

People will beable to hack it now as Sony gave them a reason to do it because of the new upgrade. Remember one thing even with out the OS function the operating system the PS3 runs on is still using Linux. So this might be a temp fix for a few month but trust me someone will do a mod for it and Geohot is working on it right now.

Yes, of course I know of modchips, my point is that the hack involving linux was so hard to do that no normal end user would do it, and any hacker that could be possibly trying to create a modchip using the hack can just ignore the update and keep at it.
in other words, this will stop absolutely nothing, they could have just left it as it was.
