SOCOM 4: It’s Official!

I wanted to drop in and deliver some truly exciting news – on behalf of everyone here at Zipper Interactive, I’m pleased to announce that SOCOM 4 is indeed in development and is slated for release exclusively on PlayStation 3 this fall.

Of course, as with any new announcement, what you really want to know are the details: Who’s in your squad? Where have they been deployed? What kind of threat are they up against? Though we’ll be revealing the answers to all these questions and plenty more throughout 2010, we don’t want to leave you completely in the dark, so what we will tell you is that a militant revolutionary has unexpectedly seized control in an important South Asian country. As the Ops Com, your mission is to command an elite five-man squad charged with stopping his aggressive agenda before it’s too late. In only six days, you must lead your team through a hostile jungle and urban environments against an army of well-armed rebel insurgents that completely outnumber you.

If that setup doesn’t whet your appetite enough, you should also be pleased to know that in addition to the SOCOM’s single-player operation, players will also be able to enjoy a 32-person multiplayer mode that boasts more Special Forces units than ever before!

If you crave even more information, then the guys at IGN have you covered with their exclusive first-look preview at what we’ve shown so far. Editor and shooting game fanatic, Ryan Geddes, dropped by our studio earlier in the week to check out SOCOM 4 for himself, so be sure to read the full IGN article to find out what he thinks.

But wait! There’s more! As part of our continued announcement celebration, the folks at GameTrailers TV will air the world premiere trailer for SOCOM 4 tonight at 12:30 am EST/PST. All you have to do is tune in to Spike TV when the time is right and let your eyes and ears do the rest. Don’t miss it!

Oh, and before we let you go, we wanted to send a message to our SOCOM and MAG fans all over the world. First, if you play MAG and wonder what this means for the game’s future, wonder no more – we’re still fully committed to supporting MAG for a long, long time and the addition of another game in our lineup doesn’t change that. Second, it’s been great to hear from SOCOM fanatics located in every corner of the globe as we led into today’s announcement. We’re extremely excited to be attached to this beloved franchise again and knowing that so many people wanted us to return to something that already meant so much to us has been both inspiring and touching – so thank you to all of you who wanted it to happen! We look forward to living up to your expectations.

  • Ok, Zipper! I’m so glad to hear this. With the bad experience I and many others had with Confrontation, I sugest you come with 8×8 rooms and more maps than just half the maps from Socom 2 like Slant 6 did. Other than that, I’m sure you know Socom a lot better and you’ll deliver.

Regarding MAG, it’s the only game that has satisfied me and my clan in a long time. It has escalated our recruitment process and we are really growing. So I don’t see Socom interfering with MAG. On the contrary, it’ll help our clan spread out to other games.

Thanx for the great news, Z!

  • Wow I see a Zipper dev is sneaking around here! Maybe I’ll catch his eye!

    HEY JEREMY!!!

……This is awesome. SOCOM 1/2 remain some of my fondest gaming memories (how appropriate this news comes on the 10th anniversary of the PS2!), but SOCOM 3 and CA made me sad, mainly because I highly disliked the vehicles.
Is there anything you can say about vehicles in MP right now? Is it for sure in? Being considered? etc.

Glad to see a return of SOCOM to the guys who know how to do it right, too! Here’s hoping I spend many many hours with this as I did with SOCOM 1/2.

    plutoknight
P.S. BRING BACK CROSSROADS, and BLIZZARD AND FROSTFIRE! And The Ruins! XD.

  • C’ mon guys why would zipper really abandon a game based strictly around multiplayer that has only just recently been released? It doesn’t make sense really. I don’t think zipper would go all EA on us (;! Love mag!! Can’t wait for socom 4 either!!

  • This is gonna be awesome!

  • cool
I’m just hoping they stick with MAG also

  • I AM SO PUMPED!!!! Please Zipper listen to the fans this time and take their ideas into consideration please. If you just revamped the Socom II machanics and did the HD touch to all the old maps you would HONESTLY make 95% of the true fans happy. New players wont know if their rehashed maps so no loss there, but to the die hards like myself it would make all the difference. I can not wait for this game!

  • another ps3 exclusive!

  • What is going on?

  • i love the socom series, except for confrontation..

and zipper did an outstanding job with M.A.G.

but i’m confused, i hope there will be more in depth discussions about the decisions made around this..

    why make mag at all?
why not make mag a socom spin off until the official socom sequel?
2 zipper shooters in one year?
will jester be making a come back? i’d like to shoot him before each mission again LOL

its a bit much IMO, i’m having a hard time balancing M.A.G., battlefield 2 to the point that i had to drop killzone 2 and pretty much skipped uncharted 2’s multiplayer..

you guys are great developers and i love your work but so many questions i have.. i’m glad the title is back in the hands of its originators…

in either case, thank you zipper for M.A.G., it truly is an awesome game..

i hope there will be a proper single player campaign as well.. i love the socom campaigns..

i really wish socom confrontation was never made though.. its a black eye in the franchise (and in sony’s) eye..

but i will be looking forward to socom 4..

    500 vs 500 multiplayer? LOL

  • Awesome, this is great news. Take as long as you need on it. Don’t rush it or else IGN and GI will smack you with a 6/10 rating like last time. I’m going to admit I myself alng with many other SOCOM fans will be disappointed if there are no classic maps for online play. I’m talkin’ Sandstorm, Fishhook, Enowapi, Night Stalker, Crossroads. They were all great maps from SOCOM I and II. Unlike Call of Duty, they can’t make great maps like Zipper did. Bring the Map Packs (DLC) because that’s what will make people bite the line. Looking forward to it, and hope my review helped.

  • wow, this is weird… For somereason I’m logged in as MaryMyFantasy…., but thats not my account….. wierd…

  • PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make it more like SOCOM 1 and SOCOM 2!!!! That is all.

  • Focus on the Multiplayer…..

    16 maps minimum

    50 guns minimum

    5000 character customization options minimum

Clan War Support…post war, accept war, war! simple really

  • Zipper, you guys rock and I trust you will support MAG. Please make Socom 4 everything that Socom:Confrontation was supposed to be.

  • SOCOM BAYBEE!

  • i hope zipper realizes before starting to develope for this game that the socom franchise has gone downhill since S3,quality wise and sales wise….mainly because the gameplay was so drastically changed…anyway this is my first comment on any blog, and i only did it because i love socom, and ive dedicated many years as a teen playing such masterpieces as S1,S2 were and id hate s4 to be bad after all this time waiting for a real socom game that takes skill.

  • i’m stupid LOL

  • Woohooo! can’t wait. nice going zipper

  • wtf this is not my psn name. sony plz f

  • FINALLY PLEASE MAKE IT LIKE SOCOM 3 & CA. NO RUN BUTTON PLEASE .ZIPPER

  • Female avatars???

So many customization options… but none for gender. :(

  • i hope is better than SC

  • single player Voice command, will it return?

  • Why is this not my psn name? How did I get signed into another account?? All I did was click on the link to the blog from my favorites and it says that I’m signed in as MaryMyFantasy? this is very freaky…

  • this is not my psn name?

  • Love MAG an Socom! Sick!

  • Will you have voice recognition for AI team mates like in previous games?

    looking forward to this!

  • since you guys been working on this for awhile i hope its better then expected because killzone 3 well it doesnt even need an intro its killzone 3 i like socom 4 but i mean if it has killzone graphics with gameplay like killzone 2 did then were talking about a good game plz dont disappoint zipper

  • Sounds good. add co-op and it’s day 1 for me!

  • i meant to say i was hopping this announcement was for killzone 3

  • To the following users who are thinking about leaving a comment. If you…

Don’t like this game or care for it,

Don’t know anything about the SOCOM franchise,

Are Modern Warfare 2 (or any opposing kind of) fanboys to this game,

Expecting MW2 or Uncharted gameplay style in a military squad-based third person shooter,

    or are graphics whining F00LS

Do NOT COMMENT, as there is no tolerance for ignorance and stupidity.
SOCOM is a great series that just fell into the hands of some inexperienced developers. Now that it’s back where it belongs in Zipper’s hands, expect to see the SOCOM series deliver what fans have been yearning for since Zipper’s last SOCOM game.

  • phoenix_mourning wants YOU, SOCOM 4. :)

  • all these whining kids, letting 1 bad experience with a franchise title ruin the rest for u? thats redundantly idiotic, thats like sayin, i tasted onion once and didnt like it, so i’ll never eat onion ever again, lol, such childish behavior/comments…I think it looks pretty good, i passed on Confrontation, and honestly never really played a Socom game, but I bet u this will be the first and I hope it plays as good as it looks in its development thus far.

    Pc,
    Syt

And just in time of its 10th birthday, you go and announce such an awesomely awesome thing that is Socom 4!!! THANK YOU!!!! I swear im still in shock!!
