Update on PS3 Firmware 3.00

1,210 0

SCEA is aware of reports that PS3 owners are experiencing isolated issues with their PS3 system since installing the most recent system software update (v3.00). Rest assured that we are looking into the matter and will provide an update here as soon as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience, as it’s our mission to deliver the best consumer experience on all PlayStation platforms.

People that don’t mind or like are entitled to their opinions and should express it without bashing the ones who don’t period.

Personally I don’t, and I don’t like the idea of not having the option to revert it to something that I find pleasant to use. I do not use the PS3 solely to play games and the cosmetic changes made do bother me and have made certain things worst on a usability level.

I shouldn’t be obligated to bare with things that annoy me just because they don’t annoy you (in a general sense) since I own the same system as you do, and I have paid the same thing as you have or more depending when you have bought yours. So all this talk is about giving the users the required options to tweak the OS to their own taste.

For what it matters the PS3 looks and feel were also part of my considerations while buying it years ago. Not only the functional side of things. Form and function both important. And I would love to see the reaction of anyone that says the contrary if the PS3 came in a cheap brown box with pink joysticks and OS that reminded DOS or Win95.

  • Im gald im not the only one who thinks the gray bars in friends list is dumb and ugly.

  • @331: (continues)

Now this cheap tactics of using the users that haven’t voiced their opinion in any public channel as a way to justify things and diminish the value of feedback given by the ones who are complaining about it in public channels means nothing.

In the very same way that silent ones can be loving the new firmware they can also be hating it and simply didn’t bothered to voice their opinions.

And arguing that the cosmetic changes don’t change the game experience or movies/audio playback is probably one of the dumbest arguments one could use. They have absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with each other except having an impact on the overall feel of the whole thing on the OS level of things.

I won’t change my mind, I can’t stand the ticker so I still want a option to turn it off and I would love to see those grey boxes gone. And we should have a option to turn those additional PS Store icons off, specially since some countries don’t even have those services available and yet they still show up in there as useless ads.

  • gj btw change the friendlist…..

  • @255: Thank you for driving in my point about the typical maturity levels here.

@284-285: I don’t mean to say that people shouldn’t comment when they don’t like how something has changed. Rather it is the overly extreme and hostile nature of these comments I’m calling into question.

Many here seem to believe that their commentary is vital to the survival of PlayStation as a viable platform. And therefore, they aren’t merely justified in yelling and screaming about every little thing they have an opinion about… but that it is even their responsibility to do so.

What is really happening, however, is this channel is becoming so overwhelmingly flooded with self feeding psycho commentary that Sony may ultimately find the whole thing useless as a feedback mechanism.

They turned off comments on the last FW blog post when it got completely out of hand. And, with how much worse it seems to be getting over time, I wouldn’t be surprised if they simply disable the comment system entirely at some point.

When Sony never replies to these comments, it doesn’t mean they don’t care. Rather it means they’re avoiding feeding the mob of trolls.

  • Great I have not had any issues with the games and like the firmware. But the truth is most people do not. Sony, you should release another firmware update allowing us to “tweak” the following.

The fount size and icon size on the XMB

Add some profile info like our trophy info on the gray boxes under the friend’s icon.

On the info board thing in the upper right hand corner, make our avatar and friends online indicator bigger so we can see them better.

Start adding new online avatars some free and some premium.

Bring avatars to our user accounts, the ones available now are just slimy faces. I just Google http://www.my360stats.com/tags/gamerpics/ (copy and past link for access to same site I use) on my PS3’s internet browser and copy images, these are the pictures xbox 360 uses.

After these things are tweaked add… Cross game voice chat, multiple log ins, and in game music.

  • Unless there are security concerns/updates, can you guys (Sony people) not forcing people updating to the newest firmware? Hearing people having problem makes me wary about updating mine. But unless updating, I cannot access PSN stores nor do much that involves accessing PSN account with PS3. That is very annoying.

Besides, if system is bricked due to forced update, Sony will not take responsibility anyway.

  • @15
    agreed.

  • To SCEA: Many thanks for your continued efforts towards improving the Firmware and providing us with additional features… please know that it’s appreciated, even though it’s not stated often enough.

Life being what it is, occasional setbacks are inevitable, and much of the criticism here IS (unfortunately) valid this time around… but please don’t let this dissuade you from continuing to evolve the OS.

I have had no technical issues thus far under 3.00, and I am grateful for the larger XMB font which I can now easily see. Although I have a terrific 40″ WEGA HDTV, tiny onscreen text is becoming ever more difficult to read the older I become (46…), and I’m certain most other gamers in my age group have similar issues.

    However…

I also agree with much of the criticism already brought forth in this comment thread regarding the graphical alterations to the XMB under 3.00 — the mutated original SCEA startup logo/cue, the missing logo/chime upon game startup, the intrusive PS®Store icons, the Friend’s List boxes, etc.

    [cont. on #350]

  • [cont. from #349]

Thankfully, these issues can easily be remedied by providing user-selectable XMB options, perhaps under a new [Settings] > [XMB Settings] section. This would provide the user base with a method of fihe tuning the XMB (and system/game startups) to fit our own personal or specific needs and/or aesthetics.

Sony has already taken such a step with [Theme Settings] > [Background], where they provided both “Original” and “Classic” options. This is a perfect example of giving the user a way to choose between an old and new XMB design elements.

It should be relatively easy for Sony to expand upon this method of bridging other old and new XMB and system settings, such as:
    • SYSTEM STARTUP — [Classic] 2006 SCEA startup logo & orchestral music cue; [Original] new 2009 PS3 logo & mutated music cue
    • PS3 GAME BOOT — [Classic] PLAYSTATION® 3 boot screen & cue; [None] bypass boot screen (new 2009 default)
    • PLAYSTATION®STORE SHORTCUTS — [Show] Display Shortcut Icons; [Hide] Hide Shortcut Icons
    • FRIEND’S LIST — [Style] Box, Outline, None; [Color] various; [Opacity] various
    • XMB FONT SIZE — [Category Bar] Size; [Item Line 1] Size; [Item Line 2] Size

    [cont. on #351]

  • [cont. from #350]

Out of all the above, a way to choose the font sizes of ALL the XMB elements is especially important to me — this would includes the main “Category” (horizontal row), “Item (Line 1)” vertical row, 1st text line, and “Item (Line 2)” vertical row, 2nd text line. Font Size selection could be either a simple (Small, Medium, Large, Xtra Large), or a numerical scale. As it currently stands, although I love the new larger text size, I still cannot read the 2nd line of ANY items.

Font Size option are also desperately needed for HOME, where I am unable to read most onscreen text – the Chat Log, avatar names/messages, mini-game instructions, etc. *Ugh!* It’s incredibly frustrating…

Lastly, after three years, we STILL have not seen the deficiencies of [Game] > [Game Data Utility] addressed. [Game Data Utility] still cannot show us the specific Game Add-ons installed on our system, nor can it delete individual items. Instead of providing a list of the individual DLC you have for a specific game, [Game Data Utility] only offers up the total file size of that game’s DLC content. Useless.

    [cont. on #352]

  • i think you guys should leave everything the way it is i love the new firmware i don’t know wut everyone is whining about

  • [cont. from #351]

(The sole exception I’ve seen to this so far is NARUTO: Ultimate Ninja STORM – it features a unique “Update History” menu option that DOES list each individual Game Add-on pack installed…)

What if I want to delete a couple LittleBigPlanet DLC items? I have to first delete the entire file, then re-download each individual pack I want separately. This is a ludicrous way of handling data; nobody would stand for this on their computer. In comparison, both the Xbox and X360 utilize a simple file manager from day one that listed each Game Add-on individually by game, and provided a way to copy, delete and obtain info for each one.

A perfect and elegant way for the PS3 to handle Game Add-on data would be to treat it essentially like the data within [Message Box] > [Received] > “Message” – only arranged as [Game Data Utility] > [Game Title] > “Game Add-on”. Each Game Add-on could then be manipulated via the “Triangle” function, with options for Copy, Edit, Delete, and Information. Again, it should have been arranged this way from Day One, rather than continually ignored.

Again, thank you for the Firmware updates, and for taking our requests under consideration.

    Sorry for the length…

  • i personally hated the look of 2.80

  • Well I havent had my ps3 off for a week as I always just leave it on when I am not playing. So I am downloading it right now….as long as I can still sign in and play warhawk then all is good. We arent paying anything for this service so we arent entitled to anything….so maybe you guys should stop demanding things and be greatful even if some mistakes were made.

I havent seen it but personally the look doesnt mean anything to me and I could care less what they did with it…..I guess you guys are all just superficial when it comes to your xmb……lol

  • For the love of god, ditch the XMB and the sparkles.

Just drop us back to 2.80 please!

  • since uncharted was the first retail game to include trophies. You guys should look into the code they are using for that. Or perhaps some extra code snuck into the trophy update when they updated the game.

  • Yeah I think it would be great to let us undo some of the changes that happened. I could care less about the font or the PSN store icons but I HATE the new grey boxes behind the friendslist. Also hate the fact that the chat is now cut off. Just add a section to settings where you can change different aspects of the XMB. Would make everyone a lot happier.

  • you sound like a tool, you could change the background.

oh yea, you’re too tough to have a purple background so you complain about something that could be changed.

  • complain about something relevant.

  • The only thing that really bothers me with this new update, is the darn ticker.

I have purchased over $250 worth of downloads from the PlayStation network, which I’m sure is just average, but I swear that I will not purchase anything else until the ticker has an option to be turned off.

I hope that others will join my boycott of this forced advertising on our systems.

I am a huge fan and supporter of Sony. (also a member of G.A.P & R.L.S) but I will not stand for this sleazy ploy by the marketing division.

Thank you for your time in reading this.

  • i have this problem where the whole update sucks. its giving me clinical depression. im not even capitalizing letters anymore. i wanna die.

  • I have purchased over 20 games from playstation store and love it, but, I will never buy another till sony gets ride of the ad’s on the 3.00 update. screw you sony!

  • “Give us an opportunity to choose between Operating Environments Graphics User Interface Original (firmware 3.00) look and feel or Classic (firmware 2.80) look and feel while still providing the performance from the new firmware.”

I fully agree with this ;)

Now for the issues, what happend with my controller? Can´t get connected without cable – wireless function disabled or what?

Can´t connect to psn anymore – only per pc, what a crap!
The ticker freaks me off, same for the huge font size and grey boxes.
Don´t care about the startup screen ´n sound, but please reasign the ´pling´ before game start – even with the new logo!

So, most important for me the controller, psn and fontsize issue!

Btw: Thanks for the update that you agree that something went terribly wrong with your so called ´major update´

Hopefully the hotfix for this crap FW comes along asap!

  • Ya, i’m depressed now too. So much for the classy PS3, thanks for “horrin’ her out” who ever let that update go forward.

  • Plz fix the grey boxes around the friends list, thats the only thing i hate about the new 3.0 update… you don’t have to remove it but atleast make it transparent, 70% transparency! thank you

  • I doubt anyone from Sony even read past the first three pages, but it seems as if a reocurring number in this blog post is 2.80. Which I whole heartedly agree with. Everything was fine before 3.0.

  • damn that sux people are having problems… the firmware is running smooth for me… i love its so much faster grey boxes on friends are ok ive gotten used to it already

  • First of all the new clock is great.

But when are we getting cross game voice chat? Everybody want’s that, Sony making a big misstake if they not giving us that. So please Sony tell us how is going with cross game voice chatt. Or give us cross game in the next firmware.

And give us a new internet browser

  • Just fix uncharted crash issues & please bring back the spidey PS3 logo on game startup.

    That’s all i need.

  • – Give us new avatars as promised

    – Make the friends list’s “blocks” more transparent; and have it change accordingly to a theme’s color

    – The new XMB layout has the perfect size fonts now… for 1080i/p though
Make an option for a “zoomed-out” XMB layout for those unfortunate of high definition

    – Remove the PSN Store icon under PlayStation Network (So there would only be two icons- under video and game)

    – Make an option such as “always run plugin” for the internet browser

    – Fix the sign-in/out network issues and better in-game functionality

    – Continue to work on cross-game voice chat

Thank you for acknowledging our concerns and issues, Sony! :)

  • Out of everything with this last update. All I really want out is the boxes around the friends list.
Another couple of features I would love to see is the ability to delete trophies out of the system. For games we are not going to play again. I would also love to see the ability for XMB access during PSone classics or any PSone disc I have. I hate end up getting messages, then having to quit the game to answer them.
That’s all I would like to see.

  • Thanks. Also i dnt think the boxes are ugly. i think they make things look organized. theyre just pretty plain. jus thinkin maybe theyre face plates? maybe a option to change the color make them transparent or add designs on them? say for someone u play call of duty with u can make ur own face plate for that person with a cod theme, or jus a theme to go with their icon. and again if people feel its in the way of their dynamic theme they can make it transparent or remove it completly jus need a couple options on what we can do with them.maybe a way so each owner can customize the xmb to his or her liking. thnx again

  • After reading some of these complaints and user’s ideal fixes, is it possible to create a software update that we can download from the PS-Store? An update that will fix the problems as well as to let us change the PS3 the way we want it along with the suggestions we want?

  • i think the last update was fine its just the Grey bars are kinda much. the ability to make them smaller or make them go away would be nice. i haven’t run into any errors I’m guessing its cause i have an older model (the 60 gig)but other than the Grey bars i love the new layout, its great ^_^

  • If you really care about providing the best consumer experience then please listen to your consumers and remove those ghastly looking gray bars from the friends list and give us the option to revert back to the old font/icon sizes.

  • Just bought a ps3 slim, installed it, went to the options screen which had color and then after setting my internet options, i went to system update.

After system update, controller was not responding and only 2 color display, black and white.

I was really looking forward to play this weekend but now I’m really disappointed. I hope an update can come soon, as in this weekend.

  • Can we get the chime back when we boot up a game?
    Please and thank you.

  • sony, let me handle the updates. u tell me what the hell u all plan and ill tell u if there will be a backlash. but, hint! let users chose to keep the way things r no matter what gay things u try to add or boast in the background. i back up SairenjiMcKay, let him and me have the original (spidey) PS3 logo back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • While you’re at it. Can you add some decent features and take away at least some of your advertisement on every single tab on the PlayStation?

Cross game chat and in game music would be great and would make update 3.00 live up to its title. Oh and fix the friends list, it looks terrible.

I don’t hate update 3.00 but I just think it shouldn’t have been the update we’ve all been looking forward to because everything we were looking forward to never came. I know you can’t appease to everyone but I think from reading a lot of other people’s opinions of update 3.00, you guys didn’t do so well.

That’s my feedback, hope this helps you in any way.

  • Give us new avatars as promised

    – The new XMB layout has the perfect size fonts now… for 1080i/p though

Thank you for acknowledging our concerns and issues, Sony! :)
    __________

-And fix the f**king sound problem!!!!!
-Let us retune to 2.80 NOW!!!!

  • I just want to throw my hat in for the few simple changes: font size and, friend list customization.

I fo, howeverI demand as the immediate removal or addition of the ability to remove the blatant, intrusive advertising by way of the additional PSN icons and news ticker. This is beyond the expected and tolerable suggesting content on PSN- this is invasion of the game system I own. Is purchasing the $600 system, multiple games and peripherals not enough? This goes without counting purchases made on PSN to date. Sony, you have forced advertising- far beyond the acceptable limits- into my home and onto my family that I do not approve of or consent to. The ads are an unannounced addition that does not include an opt out and is an invasion of privacy. I will join the boycott of PSN until this corporate marketing scandal has been resolved.

  • Add me to the list of owners of a PS3 60GB that got screwed by the 3.0 upgrade. Unit shut down this morning while watching a movie and won’t turn back on. Got the dreaded blinking red light.

Is this Sony’s way of forcing owners of older units to buy the new slim model?

  • FW 3.00 completely trashed my Blu-ray drive. Seems that this is a common problem for older 60gb consoles. What are you doing about it Sony????

  • PS3 owners are experiencing isolated issues!!? Where have you been for the last three days? That’s not all we’ve been experiencing. Games not working properly is only one problem that PS3 owners have had since installing 3.00. Basically ALL OF IT. EVERYTHING with the exception of Dynamic Themes should be removed. Give us back our original startup logo/screen and get rid of the grey boxes around the friends list, the blurring when choosing and item and the hundred links to the Playstation Store. We need to have our PS3’s back to how they were before the update.

  • Generally, I’m not one to complain – it’s good to see progress is slowly being made, but there are two predominant issues for me (and for most others, I see).

    1) Font size – at least give us the option to reduce this. I’m not visually impaired, and I have no need to see the options from the other side of my house.

    2) Ugly grey background on the friends list – it actually reduces readability. Who thought this was a good idea?!

  • i love the new firmware i personally think it is 10 times better then 2.80 just fix the freezing and controller issues and all will be good

  • take out those gray bars out of the friends list at put the way they were before

  • The boxes are stupid and useless. It would have been better if you just didn’t have them, the font is ridiculous and you can’t even change it.

Also you should of added a charging mic indicator level bar that gives you the status on how much is left to charge till you can use it instead of having 2 clocks.

HAHAHAHAHA I personally like my idea of what should have been, much better than what you have giving us.

  • change it to 1080i only and then set back all resolutions that run on your tv and the font should be fine.
