    Yes.
    Yes.

    And to everyone else…

YES, THE HDD IS SWAPPABLE. MANY SITES/BLOGS HAVE CONFIRMED THIS.

It is not currently able to play PS2 games, but Sony recently filed a patent for “Emotion Emulation”, so expect it in a future firmware update.

  • So if I have a 60gb ps3 and have downloaded psn games and rock band content. can i just log into my account on my new ps3 slim and download all my content or am i out that content?

  • oh my gosh!! this is so EPIC!! wow!!

    i might buy another ps3! i already have a launch $600 60gb ps3..

    wow!!! sony rocks!!

  • @402

You would have to deactivate your current PS3 from having the ability to play your PSN downloaded games, and then you can use all of your content again.

  • Awesome finally a price drop on the best system out there. I just wish that a playback feature would be standard on all of the ps3 systems but oh well still a great system.

  • I guess you just cant make people happy. I dont what the people expected – for Sony to give it away? It has great games, Blu Ray player, replaceable HDD, free online play, integrated Wifi, interesting non-game software and now its slimmer! at -$100. It is a definite buy at this price level.

  • @401- Ummm that “Emotion Emulation” patent was literally a way to understand emotion… If you were laughing it would sense that for the game.

Unless this is another patent that I don’t know of, but I am pretty sure that you are the confused one. :p

  • @384… that’s a good question. I wonder if it runs cooler too. Or do we have to look forward to the YLOD like the 60GB launch PS3s.

  • So what is the incentive for buying an 80GB after Sept 1st? Do you think Sony will bundle them to get them off the shelves? Or maybe a couple more bucks off? What do you think…

  • it looks good and at a very good price…but i dont think its backwards compatible

  • extremely cool beans.

  • I was happy spending $600 on my ps3. Hopefully people go ecstatic over this.

  • ***QUESTION***

Will the ps3 slim fix old problems that made u bring it in for repairs?

  • *claps* Wow I never thought the day would come that you guys would start being aggressive on the marketing for the ps3. I don’t know if the leaked footage from Philippines was really your planing or the first ever leaked shots of the ps3 slim first surfaced, but either way what a clever way to do it then just going the standard root of just making commercials. You’ve got me wanting a second ps3, the slim one that is!

  • ok, that’s cool….but where’s the software upgrade so I can play my PS2 games?

  • I love my 80gb PS3. I don’t see why people would buy this newer, slimmer, cheaper made model. It looks cheaply built, i guess for the cheap a$$ people that own a garbage Xbox 360. A kids system i might add. Anyways, why does Sony pack it with those cheap A/V cables, whoever still uses those with there PS3 needs to be put out of there misery for sure. I use with an HDMI ultra 120hz with a 42″ Lcd HDTV, but i’d like to know that I have components for back-up. Thats the only suggestion I have for Sony, oh and bring back my touch button, those made it feel and look real nice. The original PS3 is built awsome I thought. You can see, feel, smell and taste the quality of the console. This new version I don’t think puts off that same vibe. And for you people so worried about the backwards capability, give it up. Get some new games already or get a damn PS2. Thank You to all the dedicated Playstion fans since day 1 of the PS. Down with the XBOX, the Wii is cool with me though.

  • HOPE WE GET SOME ANSWERS IN the “Will the HDD be Replaceable??”

My IMPORTANT QUESTION.. WILL IT HAVE MORE RAM in the Graphics Card and RAM Itself??

Id like to know the Product Specs myself ;)

Im a Gooroo at Fine Details :D

  • GAMESPOT did a thing about the ps3 slim, it does have a replaceable HDD!!!

  • yes the hdd is replacable… read the interview with John Koller:
    http://www.gamepro.com/article/features/211673/ps3-slim-q-a-with-john-koller/

Its in the front with 2 scews

  • DUDE THAT NEW SLIM PS3 LOOKS LIKE A TOY MA LIL BRO CULD PLAY WIF AND BRAKE THEY GETTN BORED N RYNA MAKE MONEY LOL HUSTLIN

  • This is awesome!!! Gonna get a 2nd one for a second room in da house. Rock on SONY!

  • ha they turn every stystem into a slim
idk if i should just repair my 80GB ps3 disc reading problem for $150 or buy a new ps3 slim for $299.or wait for the new ps4 which is supposed to come out 2013.???

  • Sony’s John Koller think we don’t want BC.

lets express some feedback and claim .

    WE WANT BC!

    copy and paste this.

  • Great…
now I’ll never gonna get my Valor Medal trophy in Killzone 2

  • No PS2 B/C I see. A shame, a real shame.

  • Those slots look like Memory/SD card readers below the disc drive when it’s laying down flat. Are they those or are they only ventilation?

  • i wonder if it has a verticle stand it can come with or get seperately.

  • Man it’s kinda strpped and not that much smaller…
The ps1 slim and ps2 slim was a bigger size reduction compared to the old models.

Also no linux support anymore and no ps2 support huh?

I might have bought one but I think I rather keep my 60gb launch model with a 500gb Seagate Constellation drive it has more.

maybe if you shrink it again more than that and put ps2/linux support back sony then Ill buy another one.

  • AWESOME! …where can I buy a bumper sticker that says I buy SONY? :)

  • good job sony.

  • SHINEY SHINEY SHINEY!!! I WANT SHINEY!! Dude I HATEE the design come on sony if you want me to buy ur new toy make it at least look apealing. The matted look totally throws it off plus I have had no trouble with my regular PS3! and can u PLEASE answer our question about the HDD,,,

  • Cool now it will be easier to take it to friends house and play. I was wondering what do anyone know what are the 4 slots on the bottom right corner. I was wondering about trading my 80gig for the new 120gig slimmer look. Any Sugg………

  • how much will the other consoles cost??

  • Is anyone worried about this overheating? I already have a ps3 so i’m most likely not buying a slim but a few friends of mine don’t have ps3’s yet and are considering a slim but are worried about overheating and other stuff. It think it looks pretty slick though.

  • The New One is about $299. Im Really Want to do it.Let Me Think.

  • aww… hahaha i recently bought my ps3 too! oh well, :D

  • hey sorry for the off topic post here guys but i figured people would still be posting on this topic here… any1 know why the U2 beta code isn’t working? its supposed to start today i thought?

    thanks,
    Lh

  • I would like to call this a message to jack trenton Eeric Llempell and John Koller.
Backwards compatability isn’t being worked on because people who buy ps3’s are buying them for ps3 games. (And psone games personally. More so if you let me map buttons to analog stick like on psp)
Well yeah because the ps3 CAN NOT play ps2 games.
If it could then people would be getting it to play ps2 games and ps3 games (and psone games)
    Apply your logic here.

Also any game that is released for the xbox 360 as well as for the ps3 should be available for download. its dvd sized right.

  • wait has Sony totally written off the SD slot @+ others…. whats going on!!!!

  • Does The new 80 gig have a SD Slot????

  • well it looks nice, its like if Sony got desing tips from apple

  • Can Someone Help Me With this question. Why Doesnt the WORLD AT WAR

  • NICE JOB! DAMN SONY IS ON A ROLL!

I have an Original 60GB PS3 and if they put Emotion Emulation or slap on the Emotion Engine Chip in the PS3 Slim I’ll most definitely go and pick up one for myself.

I love it when they make portable versions of the consoles. The PSOne was quite successful and loved the whole PSOne, Battery pack, and portable tv. I didn’t get the PS2 Slim but probably will one day lol.

Keep up the good work Sony!

  • If I get YLoD again I’ll think about getting the slim. If I find out the slim still suffers from YLoD I’ll have to buy the green system.

  • ps3 slim creates less heat? Im tempted to buy another one just to fit it on top of the cable box.

  • Can Someone help me with this question. Why Doesnt the WORLD AT WAR let u play with anyone online. It only gives u options of invite or no one. whats up with that?????

  • I can careless for BC. To be honest, I didn’t pay $600+tax to play PS2 games. I do have a launch 60GB PS3 with full BC which I never use for any reason. When I made the purchase I thought it would’ve been something important but it wasn’t. The people on this blog and other sites are only complaining because they just want to know that their PS3 can play PS2 games.
BC was only a huge factor during the PS3’s infancy. When there wasn’t KZ2, Uncharted, iFamous, LBP, MotorStorm, MGS4, GT: Prologue, R2, Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Valkyria Chronycles etc. (this list doesn’t even include PSN titles)
If you guys are that obsessed about PS2 games just go out and buy a $99 PS2. JEEZZZZZ!!!
What PS3 really needs is a unified PSN experience. Something that rivals Live or surpass it. I’ve said this countless times before. I’m tired of figuring out how to invite a friend in each game I put in the console. PSN needs to be streamlined.

  • Woot IGN showed us the PS3 Slim can have its hard drive replaced. Screws off on the bottom.

  • the HDD in this model is also upgradeable
the slot is underneath the blu-ray disc slot with the power and eject buttons
