It’s confirmed! The PlayStation 3 is now available for $299. Yes, NOW! Today, Kaz Hirai also announced a new, slimmer form factor 120 GB PS3 (available September 1st). SCEA President and CEO Jack Tretton shows off the new hardware in this video.

@Mvdav, no its confirmed by John Koller (who always puts words nicely)… “PS2 BC is off the table”. Who ever threw the comment into the world saying “PS2 BC coming soon” I’ll personally kick his behind.
But taking measures like Diablo above me… that’s really going too far… I for one own a PS2 (make that 2, US / EU) so as long as they function I have nothing to worry, besides I play more on the PS3 more anyway and it’ll be an easier step for those who’re still stuck in the last generation.
This is great, I deploy all the time to the middle east and always take my PS3, now I can get one that won’t take up so much space and be so heavy, either way Congrats. One question will we be able to transfer all data from the main PS3 to the slim if we have both?

For those of us that want to buy the new model, will you be giving us an option to transfer our game saves, purchases, photos, music, videos, singstore purchases etc to the new model, kinda like how the 360 had a transfer cable… If you can make this happen we have a deal :)

I only hope that the Slim will be able to stay cool with all the gaming it will likely be getting.. that was always my first thought when hearing of a new PS3 slim… but glad this makes it a tad bit more affordable for the non-PS3 gaming masses to go out and join up…
At VGC they still believe the PS3 won’t get any close to Wii sales even with FFXIII coming out… hah, fanboys (and girls)… so blind and foolish… *whistles*

To answer LokeSTL question…to my knowledge there will be a backwards compatiblities on the slim PS3(my answer isn’t official, so keep on reseaching). Ultimately, that’s how it is everybody rushes out there to get first console, then 2 1/2 years later there’s a new and improved on console. If you’re the lucky ones like me have the Multimeda slots, 4 USBs ports, reverse compatibilites, then you have the golden console. You can always, buy new 2.5 SATA Hard drive for less than $100, and have lots of storage. Other than that! I like the slim console

23 million PS3 units sold worldwide so far? Let’s double that! Now with the new price point of the Playstation 3, along with a newer slimmer look, I’m expecting Sony to reach 65 million units sold by this time next year. People want the PS3 console but couldn’t afford it – now they can. And with the expansion of units sold Sony is going to need to expand Home as well to accomodate the amount of people online. Can’t Wait!

They would be smart to bundle it with LBP and possibly another game. If they did that, they would ruin nintendo and microsoft for the holiday season.

great! i might get one since im tired of my 80gb motorstorm pack ps3’s fan getting so loud when playing a bluray disc movie or game. (this happen the second the game starts 2 load) i also have been getting signed out of the playstation network since ive goten my ps3 on release. plz can any tell me how to make the fan less loud?!?

But the only thing I’d really get the Slim for is something I’d like to see available as a service if we send in our current models. Which is the matte finish of the system. Also, the touch-sensitive panels get too expensive? I noticed they’re actual tactile buttons this time.
hey, are there any ways Sony can provide me with a voucher or coupon i can use to trade in my old, bulky, $500 PS3 for a slimer one that weighs 10 pounds less, has WAY more GB size and only cost $300? i don’t care about the $200 lost, i just want a ps3 slim w/o feeling left out.
i love Sony and the ps3 but this feels like I married a woman for 15 years and found out there is a woman out there who is 10x hotter and is deeply pashionate for me but I’m stuck with the old wife.

This is Great I’ve been saving up to get a ps3 and bam now i have $200 to spare and im getting a better product. Tho I think I will wait longer and stay with my old systems. Why buy the ps3 if i can’t play all my favorite ps2 games? Seems like such a waste really personally I think the Ps team needs a big slap to the face for not doing BC. Shame Shame you’d double your Sales at least
