Hi, everyone, we have a system software updates for PS3 coming soon, and I wanted to provide you with a sneak peak at the details.
The PS3 firmware update (v2.60) is designed primarily to enhance the system’s media capabilities. The key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection. Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria, including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured. You can also create slideshows set to music and build photo playlists with an easy-to-use interface. The Photo Gallery application will need to be installed separately from the XMB after you update your PS3’s firmware. To install the Photo Gallery application, go to the Photo section on the XMB, select Photo Gallery and press the X button.
The 2.60 update also includes:
- Guest access to PlayStation Store – This enables non-PlayStation Network members to browse through the storefront to check out the latest games, demos, videos, etc.
- DivX 3.11 support – Videos in this format can now be played on PS3.

DivX? Eh, ok . . . But honestly, if you’re going to focus on video, I’d have much preferred it if you had put the effort into making the Flash player functional. I was thrilled when I heard that you’d finally updated it to Flash 9 back at 2.50 (because it meant Hulu on my TV!), but then was quite disappointed when I saw how poorly it actually functioned. Just *try* watching a video on Hulu on it — the quality is awful, *so* much worse than I see on my computer! (and my PS3 has a wired connection to FiOS, so it’s definitely not a connection issue) Please fix this!
(that being said, no, I haven’t downloaded the update yet, so if you *have* fixed it, thanks :) )

somting wrong with FW 2.60.
when i start listening music ,ps3 just like lock up u can press any button on controller nothing happens u cant change song or quit listening only button what works is ps button and only thing u can do is turn of system…
sony fix it fast i use often my ps3 to listening music.and now i cant!
We so need this feature with Music.
Please please please add this, I want to be able to see all my album artowrk in one page that i can scroll along like with the pictures.

Umm, so does this include in-game chat, an optional smaller XMB to pop up when in a game displaying the stuff you can actually access when in-game and will you guys be forcing developers to in-game music from now on?
I think it’s great that Sony is doing lots of Improvements on their Firmware. I personally would love to hear all of my Music on any game at anytime. I know some of the games are able to but very few. I am a DJ and would love to hear Music while playing. I would also like to see in the Future A file transfer such as a Picture,Music,Video over the PS3 to a friend without strings attached! Oh and one more thing Ultimate Ghost and Goblins should be for sale for the PS3 (big fan here!!!).
How about being able to listen to your own music when playing games, I think that would be a great feature to put in an update.

but what happened to the ability to have clips (stored on the PS3) play in the background when you press the PS button? I mean, now they get paused as soon as you press the button. could we get that back please… I miss it.
it would also be cool if we could listen to music while in the PS Store or accessing user and friends profiles.
and by the way, since we’re talking about the new pictures features, how about this idea: the ability to take in-game screenshots for bragging rights that we can send to friends.
……oh, and I know this is a bit off topic but is there any chance that we may see Final Fantasy Dissidia made for the PS3?? anyone??
Ok great update but PLEASE CAN PSN JUST ADD THE FEATURE WHERE YOU CAN MUSIC AND GAMES AT THE SAME TIME?

Looks nice, but what I want is to be able to play my own music while playing games. The option is there but hardly any games support it. The only games I have that do are Warhawk and MotorStorm 2.
Also I want a better in-game XMB. The current one just takes far too long to load which can be a pain while playing online games.

Can we please stop with the forced updates. I was playing Super Stardust HD last night and was forced out of a high ranking game because I had to update my firmware to log into the PSN. The downloads from PSN are painfully slow, so I get the pleasure of waiting 30 minutes to download firmware just so I can play a PSN game when you do these updates. As one feature of the firmware I want to see implemented, is no more forced up dates please.
I like the Photo Album, though it doesn’t seem terribly intuitive when sorting by age group.
I have over 600 photos from my wedding. It was all adults. There wasn’t a child within 10 miles of the event (literally – it was on a boat). All those photos got sorted into “Other”.
And of the hundreds of photos of our sons, six got sorted into the “Babies” category. And those were of our oldest son during his 2nd birthday party. His baby photos and those of our youngest son who’s only 6 weeks old? “Other”.
WTF? I hope you guys find a workaround in future updates.
I need some help.
I downloaded the update and now I can’t sign in. It says to check my network settings. I did that and everything was ok. I chose easy settings and it gave me custom settings.
I did all of that but cnt connect.

I sometimes get disconnected from the PSN when doing something and then I have to Sign in again.
could we have a firmware that auto Signs in the user whenever disconnected, and if we have to re-sign-in manually at least have the process in the background instead of looking at the
“”Signing in.. Please wait.””
screen… like I simply select “Sign in” and while it does that I can continue with whatever and get a message like always when I’m signed in. should be simple to remove that screen right??
I can’t believe this pictures application is feature you have prioritized over other more important ones.
Getting content onto the PS3 still stinks. You need a real sync application, preferably one from Sony that provides the ability to sync and organize content for Mac and PC.
I wish the team would focus on features that people need or want.
thanks sony… LOVE the “media center” use of the PS3. Thank you for doing more with it than just gaming. There are people out here who do more with their PS3 than just game. Not everyone that owns a PS3 is a 14 year old gamer !!!

I really like this update,BUT when will we be able to find out wheather a game is region locked or not becuase I play with a lot of guys from all over the world.It just sucks to buy a game and can’t play with your buddies and cost to much not to be able to enjoy them with your M8’s YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah this looks good, But unless i missed something in the old updates all the musics i copy to my PS3 is sorted by genre and not artist like when i first bought it.
Please put it back to how it was so i only have to look for Kings Of Leon and not search the Rock directory to play what i want

No the migration did NOT go well.
Yet again my PS3 freezes whenever I try to log in on the PS3 browser. Seriously this is ridiculous. I mean this is the Playstation Blog yet my PS3 can’t log into it (ironic).
I’ll explain what happens. I click on the log in link then enter all my details and click on Log In. Suddenly nothing happens and the the browser freezes. None of the buttons would work other then the PS Button so I’m forcd to restart the PS3. Not once have I been able to log on to the blog on the PS3 browser. This blog is the ONLY place that causes it to freeze.
(in case you’re wondering I’m on a PC now)
Please get it sorted. I want to post comments when I’m casually browsing the blog in between games but I can’t.
ERIC, is there any way that the PS3 can be patched to output 7.1 audio to the fiber optic instead of just HDMI?

i totally agree about creating PSN features. This is a really cool looking feature but u should be creating features that people use more often like the internet.
Create two accounts that can be logged on at the same time also make a firmware where u can surf the internet and play games at the same time (like switch back and forth).

Why is there no update for a private chat? I’m tired of playing with people that leave their mic on and having to listen to annoying ambient noises, or having to listen to them scream and yell like little girls. If its possible to support multiple people in a private chat please implement that into the system update!
Instead of spending your time updating irrelevant things on the firmware, how about some GAMES Sony?
Pretty cool… although I suspect there are few people who use the PS3 as their primary photo storage device. Now, if I can use the new gallery tool to display photos stored in iPhoto over MediaLink’s UPNP connection… THAT would be useful.

MORE OR LESS 1050/1100 posts are asking you for PRIVATE IN-GAME CHAT… I think we NEED at least an ANSWER!! really.. a post.. a reply… something.. “yeah we’re working on it”.. “yeah in the next months”.. “in the next years”.. “never”.. just A N A N S W E R….. you’re “evaluating” that since last july.. any decision?
these are really all great feature.. seriously.. but only after you give us something to play.. for gaming.. please.. I’m going crazy for that

Sony needs to step up to the plate and either provide the features we’re asking for, or be honest and tell us that they’re developers aren’t skilled enough (or their hardware platform isn’t robust enough) to deliver these features. Or worse: that they just don’t care about their customers.
next frameware: listen music when u playing
I tried to load pictures onto my playstation with the 2.60 update using a flash drive, it said it could not recognise any pictures has anyone else found this problem any can fix it.

is there a problem with in-game chat, please try and fix this issue. we all payed alot of money for a playstation 3 in the belief that it cud do all of thee things and more, otherwise wemite as well hav just got an xbox 360, and i hate to say that!!!

Personally, I hope the TD of all the kiddies whining about music, chat, and home, has an annual income of < 20K, so Sony isn’t financially motivated to listen to them.
Nice PSN id migration. Went smooth for me. 2.60 went in without a hitch yesterday. I dig the photo gallery. Now I need to take some more pics. What would be really cool is if you could export the slideshow to a thumb drive as a AVI or other vid format to upload. If you wanted to brand the video with a PS logo that would only further get the word out of the PS3’s multimedia capabilities. Keep up the good work.
