Upcoming PS3 Firmware (v2.60) Update

1,717 0

Hi, everyone, we have a system software updates for PS3 coming soon, and I wanted to provide you with a sneak peak at the details.

The PS3 firmware update (v2.60) is designed primarily to enhance the system’s media capabilities. The key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection. Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria, including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured. You can also create slideshows set to music and build photo playlists with an easy-to-use interface. The Photo Gallery application will need to be installed separately from the XMB after you update your PS3’s firmware. To install the Photo Gallery application, go to the Photo section on the XMB, select Photo Gallery and press the X button.

The 2.60 update also includes:

  • Guest access to PlayStation Store – This enables non-PlayStation Network members to browse through the storefront to check out the latest games, demos, videos, etc.
  • DivX 3.11 support – Videos in this format can now be played on PS3.

Here’s a video walk-through of firmware 2.60 that shows off some of what the Photo Gallery can do.

As always, we look forward to hearing your feedback.

  • A couple things that would be great for Photo:

-an easier way to multi-select individual photos and moving them to a certain album (right now I’m going under info and changing Album names on each pic)

    -In this new “Photo Gallery”…A way to change the way a Pic is Grouped {i.e. Age group (babies getting put with adult group)}

    Great Work though…Keep it up

  • WOW i gotta say u did it agen sony!!! i wud also like to have in game chat if possible because xbox 360 sucks microsoft rip u off!!! and there console crap any way is there no stopping the ps3 find out next week *coff* or when they post more stuff *coff*

  • Its a nice update but from 2.53 to 2.60 just for a new photo gallery. Come on its 2009 I would have expected something bigger.

  • so no one cares about throwing away money on games that end up being region locked thats crazy or maybe i’m the only one that plays with a huge amount of people over seas.
hack some times i can’t play with some of my freinds in Canada CRRRRRAAAAAZZY I till yah.

just tell were to go to find out if the game i want is regional or not.
Although I have tried going to some games web sites and they all say region open.
I buy the game then find that is a bunch of crap.

So how can I beleive any one?
I Love Sony but I HATE feeling like i’m being
cheated and right now thats how I feel, please don’t hurt my feelings and HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • It really frustrates the hell out of me that I MUST download the newest update to get online….I don’t CARE about stupid photo uploading software, I much rather HAVE A CHOICE on which software to download and still be able to get online if I choose to skip the newest update….if the update has some error fixing software I will need inorder to get the proper online gaming experience then by all means make it mandatory….If not then forget it.

  • PS3 update. Time to jump on that soapbox.

When will they learn that people hate new features and stability? Oh when will they learn?

  • Here I sit after 20 mins with barely anything even downloaded…….How about an update for COD4 so I don’t have to automatically get thrown back into the same game I just exited out of online 5 times in a row????? I’m mainly mad because this time I’m waiting through the forever long downloads for some stupid photo software.

…or maybe the features you kiddies are whining about would drive away more customers than attract?

Jeez, never considered that. Yah, having features like cross-game chat and custom music has really hurt XBOX sales, so you’re probably right.

It would suck if PS3 sales were to drop to XBOX levels.

  • The photo app is interesting, but it would be even better if it could grab the photos of my NAS like the built in photo viewer can.

  • Gotta agree with #1455, it’s really annoying if you’re just trying to sit down for a quick online game or checking out the store to get a mandatory firmware update that always seems to take 10-15 minutes to download.

It seems like a 1-2 week grace period, with the exception of a critical security update, would be a much better system. Especially with the occasional tendency for firmware updates to brick systems. I hate not being able to go online for a few days until I make sure no major problems are reported with firmware. Either that, or Sony needs to allow bricked systems out of warranty to be repaired for free. (and don’t use “Microsoft is the same thing!!!” as an excuse, as it’s equally lame, but they have fewer upgrades so it doesn’t happen as often)

  • Microsoft software isn’t any good….if I spent all kinds of money on an xbox360 just to have something way better come out a year later I would be upset to….so people either praise the 360 because they really think it’s better…or they praise it because they don’t want to feel like a fool because spending all that money didn’t get them the best console out…..if xbox made a shoe those people would trash nike saying the new xbox shoe was better while ignoring the fact that nike has been making them for years.

  • I’ts great to have the option to download upgrades from PCs (then install them via USB thumb drive into the PS3), but… why not other stuff too?, like this new photo organizer thing, or demos?

I’m pretty sure there should be a lot of people that, due our jobs, we can access the internet during the work day and download this stuff, then at night in our homes we can install it faster and have more time to play instead of “wasting” time downloading this things.

    keep the good work!

  • Great update for photos BUT :
i’ve a DLNA device with about 250 gigs of photos…. and i can’t access them with the gallery :-(
    please do something ;-)
    regards

  • Yea it feels like Sony’s update ghestapo knocks on the door about every week with some kind of life improving software that will do promising things like “new menu buttons that look like houses” and “now you can upload your favorite song to play in the menu while you wait for the next hour long download” Thanks for hearing the rant it made the time go by faster an now I’m off to little big planet.

  • my question is when is someone with some authority going to drop a comment to reflect on all thats been said…..not being mean but ……if we get a little info i think there would be less frustration..

  • Who gives a [DELETED] about in-game music & cross-game chat??? There is a MAJOR, MAJOR issue that needs to be focused on before they start adding additional garbage.

The ONLY thing at this point that shou;ld be addressed in a new firmware update is the ability to upscale PS3 games to 1080p/i. 95% of LCD HDTVs have a significant amount of lag, and running the PS3 in the televisions PC Mode reduces that lag to 10ms or under. The only problem is that PC Mode on LCDs only works when a 1080p signal is being sent to the television… removing the option to GREATLY reduce gaming lag in 720p only titles.

The other (and more widely known) issue this presents is that the PS3 downscales everything to 420p for people with HDTVs that do not support 720p and/or 1080p/i. Over 40% of PS3 owners are affected by this!

This is a PS3 issue & Sony are WELL aware of it & have even stated (way back in Nov. of 2006) that it would be fixed, but have done absolutely nothing about it.

The 360 can do it, why not the PS3?

If this were not a MAJOR issue, there wouldn’t be a 500+ page thread about it. http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&thread.id=1543693&view=by_date_ascending&page=1

  • Eric, any idea if the battery indicator overlapping the clock bug is going to be fixed in a future update?

Also are we going to get any more PSN avatar options and a party chat feature?

I’m sure you’ve been asked about this a billion times before but it would be nice to know if we can expect any of these in the future.

    Cheers!

I think someone needs to replace their 28K baud modem with high speed Internet. It took me less than ten minutes for the update to download and install.

  • A lot of in-game chat wanted. Few of us do not want nor need this feature most of the games allow chat that i play(undercover, cod4, r2) and want to hear someone in my ear anyway.
Custom music through the system, could swear the M$ has a lock on patent and is not sharing, hence why Sony has to have the developers work on this feature individually. The patent is pretty.
    1. Fix battery and clock issue
    2. More Avatars
    3. Categorize Friends
    4. Stay Online but alerts off during blu ray but on for ps1 or ps2 game play.
Projects that need work or we just need
    5. Life with playstation
Allow users to choose a website for their town and store it into a online database and when a user clicks on the city the local news station pops up
    6. Allow users to forward/send old messages and stored videos. Nothing like a 1 gb or even a 500 mb file but video message to friends ALL at once.
    7. Home Online radio station where we can make request or just bring ASOT there and that will win everyone over
    8. In-game chat not really interested in this feature but many gamers seem to want it. Like playing my racing and rpgs and in most casts fps in peace. When team play comes up for an fps i understand but anything else

  • NEW AVATARS AND BE ABLE TO LISTEN TO MUSIC WHILE PLAYING GAMES PLZ THANKS SONY. YOU WILL ALWAYS OWN MICROSOFT.

  • Hey are you ever going to come out with a update that lets us watch youtube videos on psp?

  • Hey the PSN id thing works sweetly.

Umm yay for the DivX support! and I think Im gonna start using my ps3 to show off the pics more often now…

But where’s the cross-game voice chat???? Correct me if I’m wrong but I think this is a feature that has been desired for a good while by many many PS3 users..

anyhow, thanks Jeff and the PS team :]

  • WHOEVER WAS THE GUY WHO FIXED 80022D11 error- GET THAT GUY A RAISE … its about time

  • The picture application is obviously as well thought-out as anything I’ve seen from Apple, MS, or Google.

Next needed is something similar for music and video. In fact, while I love the PS3 as a gaming console, the only thing keeping it in the living room is the media capabilities.

Introduce a similar music app and some apps (no browser-based things please) for Hulu, etc. and I’ll keep the PS3 right where it is instead of opting for a boxie-based HTPC.

  • Thanks a lot for the continual support of firmware updates as well as web based content like this PSN ID merger!

I’ve been a long time reader and never really felt like signing up, now I have a reason to comment, ha!

  • Ohhh I love the FW updates, it’s just great to see your console being constantly supported! Thanks!

    #1435:

    Agreed.

Sony needs to step up to the plate and either provide the features we’re asking for, or be honest and tell us that they’re developers aren’t skilled enough (or their hardware platform isn’t robust enough) to deliver these features. Or worse: that they just don’t care about their customers.

    ******************
..perfect…. just HONESTY… you can’t ignore wath we’re asking for… private in-game chat is in your plan..?? ..only this..

  • For all of you complaining about having to get the Photo gallery software just to play an online game, well, the photo program IS optional, you download it AFTER the firmware upgrade, only if you want it. Didn’t you watch the video?

  • I posted earlier about me probably not using it as the XMB is so much quicker. After trying it, it loads very fast, so I take it all back.

  • Seems like everything went alright. Not a bad update :)

  • Thats kool great job sony,

  • That is pretty cool. I have found myself actually using the media aspect of the PS3 more and more lately so this is going to be a pretty interesting feature to tinker with.

  • Cool update, and even COOLER is the PSN sign in here!!

  • what ever happened to the old crash bandicoot platformers for ps1? those were the best games ever! now all we have is racing and jumping on the backs of random animals and saying ‘giddeyup!’. blech.

  • I guess it’s ok if you have pictures on you playstation 3. Presonally i don’t but this makes me want to put some on my PS3.

  • Is it possible for playstation to add the busy or appear offline function on the ps3 please

  • Good work on the update…. THOUGH what I’d really like to see instead of improving these slightly less used functions:

    1. VOICE MAIL! Is it so hard to implement a voice mail system rather than having to type everything?

    2. THE MUTE FUNCTION – Especially in games where annoying little kids get their hands on a mic (COD4 for example).

    3. Quicker friend online recognition and add up system. XBOX can do it, I’m sure our superior Playstation guys n gals can too.

  • Of course, makes me wonder if any of these suggestions will actually slip through to developers seeing’s how there’s over 1400 posts. Maybe if we had the ability to start our own threads? Like one specific thread for PSN Improvement Suggestions?

  • in game access to the internet browser would be nice.

  • Hey anyone who recognises me plz say something my console is banned not my account ;(

  • “Of course, makes me wonder if any of these suggestions will actually slip through to developers seeing’s how there’s over 1400 posts. Maybe if we had the ability to start our own threads? Like one specific thread for PSN Improvement Suggestions?”

That’s what the offical PlayStation boards are for. You can log in via PSN there as well.

  • I agree with Stargatefreak. You should make categories into the friends menu. That would be pretty cool.

Nice features, but i want a better friend list!
I have much friends and i want to group my friends in own categories, for example:
    – Clan
    – SOCOM friends
    – etc.
This make the PS3 friend list more useful and friendlier!

  • I haven’t fully engaged the “multi-media” functionality of my PS3, due to not having a particular interest in doing so, but I must say that I am pleased with Sony’s continued support with the firmware upgrades.

Oh, and yes, the migration was seamless for me.

  • I am currently downloading this update as I type this and I can’t wait to try this new feature inside and out. I use my PS3 to show off pictures from vacation trips to all my family when they come over. With a new 52′ HDTV these pictures just look soo amazing! Thanks Eric!

  • This update no longer allows me to view my media server photos in a slide show. Any fix planned?

  • vince_the_biker | January 20th, 2009 at 9:19 am
Please, give us the PS2 backward compatibility in a future firmware !!!

    I agree !

  • maybe a coincidence, but my PS3 (60GB) has always worked perfectly. I keep it well dusted, it never gets bumped, I even avoid it being on for longer periods of time, 3 hrs tops.

Anyway seen there was an update available and wanted to play COD:WAW online so I had to update.
So I did the update, and played 1 or 2 matches, then during one of the matches my PS3 froze, then shut itself down. Not just that but it will no longer power on for more than 1/2 a second, I can’t even get it to eject my game. It won’t even stay powered on long enough to reset the system, by holding the power button when turning on

  • Here is a link to other people having the same problem, seemingly from a previous
    FW update

Can a Sony rep tell me what I should do.
There is no way I see myself sending it in if it costs… well, anything(let alone the $150 or so I hear is the common price Sony charges for fixing PS3’s) for something that is not fault of my own

especially since I bought a extended warranty for $120, that just expired 10 days ago

    $600 for PS3
    +$120 for replacement plan
    +$150 to fix

I don’t think I could stomach $870 on just one console.
So someone please tell me this is fixable
