Firmware v2.40 status

2,454 0

As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.

We’ll provide further information as necessary here on the Blog.

  • I just wont the function so that I can go to the XMB in game and send game requests there. also I would like the function to join other peoples game from the XMB in game. Because its so much easier to jump online and join one of your friends games. those features shouldn’t be that hard to implicate. Come on Sony !

  • @497

    You might have a problem seeing as it was bought in another country, I am not sure on SCEE’s policy is with foreign PS3’s.

  • I havent encountered any problems with 2.40.
    Except for few odd PSN errors (account logged off psn for some reason, might have been a lagspike with my network systems too)

    Other than that it has been working fine.

    Good to see quick reaction tough, if it really might brick some Ps3 its more than good to see the update fixed before its too late (unlike in some companies that I shall not name, who waited a year saying there where no problems when there clearly was)

  • If my PS3 stop work what should i do then??? Send it to Playstation and get a new???

  • It’s all lies. xBox players say these things to bring down the PlayStation brand :-/ Never have i had a problem or friends with a update. Hope you know that SONY??????

  • I’ll probably not get answered bur here it goes.

    You said in your 2.40 FAQ that it would be possible to change the sound settings… but well… it’s not!!

    It was for me the main reason to update because I use 5.1 headphones and I need to switch from analog output to optical output many times, or I just forget to change the settings when entering a game and then I need to leave the game immediately next just to change this.

    Again, you said it would be possible, but it’s NOT.

    Do you have plans to implement this feature or not?? It would be greatly appreciated…

    Thanks.

  • Is the issue with the failed download/install or the firmware itself. I successfully installed, am I going to have problems?

  • @497
    Thats really your own problem and the risk of buying imports. You can of course get it fixed in the country it came from.

    @360 Templars.
    I don’t know what you guys are doing here. Its pretty obvious that every PS3 user wants a PS3 and wouldn’t swap it for a 360. Its also pretty obvious that it would be a bad choise to do so anyway, since you 360 users obviously have time left to troll this blog instead of playing games: makes you wonder if you should prolong your XBL Gold fee again (something most of us wouldn’t want to do anyway). I also find it strange to read comment from MS Templars stating that their machine is better and MS doesn’t make mistakes. You should google on the term ‘RROD’ or ‘unable to login to XBL for 2 months’.

    @ Playstation Blog:
    2.40 worked for me, but I have something strange going on with the fan of my 40GB: after a while in the game it goes into warp speed and it sounds like on the youtube movies when people do a fantest. Has anyone got this behaviour also? My PS3 has always been quiet but now it makes noise like Boeing 360.

  • since I installed the 2.40 update… I’ve had it a couple of times that while playing, the game froze and I had to hold the powerbutton until it beeped and reboot the ps3.. it has happenned with a couple of games. (skate,GTAIV,bad company (demo), superstardustHD).. anyone else having this since they installed 2.40?

  • I honestly do NOT think it is a problem with the actual firmware at all, that is corrupting peoples hard drives, but the installation/downloading process.

    Because SO many people were downloading at the same time, many were getting spat out when trying to download it. Eventually it works after they keep trying, and they get squeezed in, so part of the actual firmware gets malfunctioned, or corrupted, and this causes the PS3 to brick.

    Similar to when downloading a file (video for example) on your computer, while using a crappy connection, it sometimes gets squeezed in and says its complete, when really part of the download got chipped, so because so many people were on at once, this caused it to go slow and push everyone together, eventually popping a few people out to make space.

    Get what im saying? Thats what I think it is anyways, since its not happening on mass scale.

  • Downloaded 2.40 on my 40 gigger and its working great.

    Trat my PS3 did the same im pretty certain its just the system getting hot.
    I moved mine to a more open area it does it rarly now

  • Ive got a 60GB model and installed just fine….thank god!!!

    it could be tht the servers were under sooo much pressure for the download that data was lost causing the curruption. imagine how many ps3 owners were downloading at the same time…millions!! or sony just fuked up becos ppl have been b*tchin about them not sticking to deadlines lol….good luck to tho’s who are effected btw.

  • Obviously there is a file integrity check after the download..

  • So you can add me to your list of “limited reports of PS3 crashes from Update 2.40”.

    Thanks SONY.

  • @512
    Would be strange if it wasn’t the case: so you are right.

    @510
    But it never did this before 2.40. Same for you?

    @509
    I see what you mean, but why did this happen so much with 2.4 and not with <2.4 updates?

  • @ All
    Its looking like alot of people are reporting that if you take the hard drive out of your ps3, reformat it with your computer, and then put it back in the ps3 it will start working again, hope this helps some people.

  • 515 , thats basically all you have to do but people are dumb and wont do this , instead they call up Sony .

    the FW works fine for me and if it did brick my system, i would have fixed it on my own by now.

  • @Trat:

    Yea it was doing it befor 2.40 i was looking in the PS3 instruction manual it explains That some games play at higher disk speeds then others which creates more heat thus enabling the fan to sound like a jet plane.
    It seems to only do it on certain games like GTA 4
    Hope this helps

  • Btw, is all this system of updating via internet have some check sum protection, I mean md5 for example? Couse connection with packets loss may damage your .pkg files, maybe it’s not a problem right now, but for firmwares — must have feature I think.

  • @ 514

    Well maybe because not everyone was download 2.4 as much as they were with this update. thousands were waiting for this, all at the same time, imagine the strain, especially if many people have below average internet?..

  • My system logs me off-line a lot now that I have 2.40 update… The in-game music player doesn’t work.. The Trophies for Pixel Monsters don’t nor does PAIN… This should have been Beta tested FIRST.. Thats what beta is for. not only games!!!!!!!!!

  • You know people just love a bad news story when it comes to Sony don’t they? Blogs are just dying to report on Sony having a RROD scale epidemic – there must be a least 10 times more news/blog stories about them pulling the update than there were about the features it added when announced! To be honest I take what people say on blogs with a pinch of salt, there clearly are some problems (otherwise Sony wouldn’t have taken it down) but no one has the information to speculate on the scale – I would only count a call to their Service Desk as a genuine error, because people with a genuinely broken PS3 ring Sony first – they don’t post it on some fanboy blog or other.

    As for me I have a UK 60GB model with a 160GB HDD upgrade and I installed the update without issue, has have everyone I know with a PS3. People who claim to have this problem have said if they format their HDD it will fix the problem – firmware is not stored on the HDD – when they reformat it will format it as 2.4 – in other words the problem is NOT with the firmware, but rather a file present on a select few HDD’s that appears to become corrupted after the update.

    In other words Sony would have been unlikely to spot this during testing, and I’m not sure how they’re going to figure out which file is the problem unless they gather enough information from the genuine people with problems that call up. Stop being a bunch of moaning b*st*rds and just be glad that Sony acted quickly to nip it in the bud. For all we know at this point the file present on the HDD’s that causes this could be anything from malware installed from a website visit to a dodgy save file from a pirated game to a poorly made custom theme!

    At least your PS3 isn’t permanently damaged, and if the data you lose from formatting the HDD is that important perhaps it will teach you to perform a backup before installing major updates (that goes for all computer equipment, not just the PS3)… it warns you as much on the firmware agreement…

    It makes me laugh when people make out like this is the end of the World, it wasn’t so long ago that I recall a certain Spring 360 update that completely killed your 360 with a RROD (requiring a full return/repurchase and not just a HDD format), you don’t hear people still going on about that do you…

  • No.22
    Damn you dirty troll, go home and play with your banned RRoD console.

  • … and why we can’t reinstall firmware again and again? I remembered — old firmware was about 100+mb in package, now its about 130mb… New versions are more complicated, I guess, we must have ability to ensure downloading process was correct allways, or it just don’t installing after this.

  • @516
    You are right, I read like 5 messages from the same guy stating that in game music is broken and Sony should answer his question. I mean, he didn’t even read what the feature was and how it worked and he posts 5 messages on this board. I think most people are to stupid to install FW updates, sorry to say but Sony does a great job at keeping it low maintenance: its very difficult to mess up an update, unless you plug out the power or something. Yet, most comments here really make me laugh: such techn00bs. They sound like Kodak camera users, camera’s for people who get lost in the menu, the minute they turn it on.

    @517
    Well, mine never did this before. I installed 2.4 and wanted to see if the DVD/BD section had new features. I popped in a DVD and the machine’s fan went crazy. It als did in GTA4 yesterday: never happend before. Then again, it was a tropical day yesterday. Will see if the fan still kicks in. Hell, I even cleaned the HDD bay for dust bunnies (where almost none).

    @519
    I doubt this is the case; many peope on my list didn’t download it yesterday. I don’t think it got download that substancially more then usual.

  • I was in the middle of watching a cutscene in MGS4 when my 60GB PS3 suddenly turned off and the red power indictator started blinking. The manual says overheating causes this problem but it was cool (unless keeping it in standby overheats it). It seems to be ok when I’m not playing a game. Is this related to the firmware? I never had this problem before. What should I do? Restore the system or wait for the next update?

  • Good update!

    We now need multiple PSN logins and in game chat

  • @520.

    Idiot, the ingame music player only works with patched games. Read!

  • @521 “it wasn’t so long ago that I recall a certain Spring 360 update that completely killed your 360 with a RROD (requiring a full return/repurchase and not just a HDD format), you don’t hear people still going on about that do you…”

    No, the MS Templars made sure that story got burried with the rest. ;-)

    @525
    I have a strong feeling that my 40GB also gets to hot after the 2.40 update, but it could just be the weather was tropical yesterday.

    @526
    No… we don’t need multiple PSN logins. What made you think we want that? You can have as many logins as you want already, but not be logged in at the same time. I don’t know how you came up with this insane idea: I couldn’t have dreamd it up, thats for sure.

  • @ 520

    Wow you didnt read ANYTHING about 2.4 did you. Games have to be patched to support trophies, they dont just MAGICALLY appear.

  • im leaving this blog and deleting this account becuase one person on this entire blog has been answerd its insulting were just cattle swirling around passing speculation and best guesses its pathetic, the offical statement is what “2.40 is currently offline” …… the end, i want an official answer from a member of sony on why we dont have a universal music player for in game purposes, and voice chat.

  • @43 yeah, pretty much. it is unbelievable sometimes. i do wonder if these are grown folk or all little kids.

    however if you are in a situation where you are out of warranty and something seriously went wrong… you shouldn’t have to pay a dime in order to get it fixed.

  • @517
    I can confirm the speeding fan is due to the 2.40 update. This never happend before: I fired up F@H and after a minute the fan goes Boeing 360. Again, I never had any troubles with overheating or anything. I guess this is either a new feature (don’t like it then ;-) or its a bug, or the 2.40 install got messed up on my system, overheating the Cell.

    @530
    You want an official answer? How the heck are you? The official answer is that those things wheren’t targeted in this 2.40 update. They are for future updates (if possible).

    @531
    Word, but if warranty is over anyway: I would tray to format the HDD myself first, before I ship out to Sony. Its perfectly safe anyway. I guess you lose your safe games either way.

  • my ps3 works perfectly with 2.40, I am sorry for those who have problems….I feel bad for sony…I dont envy their jobs right now….

    good luck to everyone and sony, just thought you should know that the update is perfect on my end!!! thank you sony !

  • @501- Fair point, but again it’s a SONY product, same company wherever they are. I bought it as I was working away, and have since came back. Would YOU then buy another when you got back home if it was you?

    Just wondering what their stance would be…..

  • @ 530

    You REALLY think they will come in here and answer questions, when they dont know the answers and are too busy FINDING out those answers? Seriously, your acting like a spoiler child.

    PS- Guys I dont know what all these problems you all are reporting about, like speeding fan, glitches, freezing etc, I dont have them at all. Is that because I dont have online where I am at? Is this related to 2.4 + PSN? Who knows…

  • Sony, why did you pull the upgrade when almost no one is experiencing any problem with it?

  • I did the fantest on my 40GB (turn off power switch, hold eject button and turn on power switch again): fan doesn’t go wild anymore in F@H. I put the PS3 in horizontal possition now and can confirm that when I put it back vertically, the fan starts going wild again. Still strange, never had this before. Is anyone else experiencing this erratic behaviour?

  • I agree with you #489. That was well said. These things do happen. People get on as if this was meant to be so utterly perfect that it should have no problems at all. What matters is that Sony works on this problem and get 2.4 back up.

  • #530, delete your account. Just don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

    You know what I find that’s so amusing? People are shouting orders and what Sony should do instead of allowing them TO FIX THE DAMN PROBLEM!

    Goodbye and good riddance.

  • here PS3 60 GB with 250 Gb hard drive and 2.40 works perfec but, I miss cross ingame invites and ingame voice chat.

    thank and regards
    vanace

  • I have it installed… But everything is going so much slower…When trying to change the network settings it just goes in a loop… And never lets me change it… This didn’t happen before the firmware. Also the XMB tends to be slower at certain places after this firmware. Great job Sony with this update, but please fix theese issues.

    Thanks.

  • Hurry up and fix this!
    I paid 1,000 AUD for your product. SHOW ME THE MONEYS WORTH!

    Also, add something else to make us happy.

  • #536, I guess problem is deeper, because with all of this updates before never was such thing as a game xmb, when Sony needs separate os memory even more and more precise. Add to this problems with servers in days of firmware release and 130mb of system files in one archive, and that one describes all our systems, all versions of hdd and ect.

  • mine makes it lag quite a bit. Anyone else get that?

  • @542
    Do you really think your comment makes the difference? Hurry up? And then something goes wrong (again)? You sound like a acne covered pancake. Think and add something constructive to this topic please. Everyone paid their dimes, so everyone wants it quick.

    P.S. Of course its always nice from them to add something else ;-)

    @541
    Is XMB slower in game, you mean? Cause that is actualy much expected. Overal, I must say I thought XMB would be much slower in game.

    Did anyone else see that the PSN Store now loads much, much faster?

    @543
    True, but also, Sony isn’t affraid of pulling it. Gives me much trust in them.

  • @ 544
    You mean lag during online play? I saw that yesterday when I played GTA4, but it was a 16 player match and the lag wasn’t so different from what I experienced in other matches I played with 16 players. If the host has slow internet, it will lag.

  • Mine installed fine, no problems ever since. Just let us know when some of the game companies will be sendin out trophy support patches! freakin pumped!

  • Guys calm down , the good folks at SCEA are working to get the problem fixed.

    It would be nice to have some news ,but well… im cool because i know that they are working hard so we can have 2.40
    Cheers guys

  • So…

    Define “an issue”…

    That means..problem installing..it cripples the system..download errors…

    I assume it cripples the system since it has been taking offline.

    That’s bad news.
