As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.
We’ll provide further information as necessary here on the Blog.
Also, I wanted to add that I just hope Sony doesn’t think that if they deliver this, we won’t be asking for something else.

Dude, Sony KNOWS requests will never stop, trust me. They will always be updating the PS3… TILL THE END OF TIME. Which is of course when PS4 comes out..

If someone was downloading the update and a few packets were lost in the transfer due to the hack then of course you would have a problem when that person tries to install it.
It would not install correctly and give people the impression that is the firmware is at fault when really its a server issue.
I wouldn’t be surprised if this was a corporate attack. Its not unheard of for companies to hire crackers to steal secrets from competitors or in this case try and lower peoples opinions of the competing company.
This has Microsoft written all over it, maybe they were pissed off at the trophy implementation….. Of course this is just theory and speculation but not as insane as some of you might think.

re: Waffles. I concur, I believe there is a level of industrial ‘sabotage’ occuring now and again. I posed a similar theory in relation to the GTA4 debacle as it affected me, and seem more like a virus targeting a specific ‘combination’ of variables as to make it ‘appear’ to effect both the 360 and the PS3; with a much higher chance of it being a PS3. It affected the older units almost exclusively [from wht I read] and those would have had been able to be ‘reverse enginneered’ the most. Sony has my GTA4 ‘affected’ PS3 now, and the 60GB they exchanged it for loaded/installed the 2.40 Update, and it works flawlessly thus far. [url]www.PS3GamerAlliance.com[/url]

I am using Firmware 2.40 and my PS3 froze when I tried to play a DVD. I just got a black screen. I had to pull the power plug out the back of the PS3.
I wonder if Firmware 2.40 caused this.
Note to SONY, do not release FW updates right before a long weekend in the US. If you brick a few PS3s, those ppl will be EXTRA pissed for ruining any extended gaming plans for the holiday.

Anyone else find it perplexing that 2.4 has issues yet there’s still people requesting new things in another firmware update? I’m not trying to start a fight with anyone I just don’t see the reasoning behind it.

Its NOT the same product and NOT the same corp, all over the world, support is different: you import something to get it cheaper (or outside your domestic product range). You pay for the console, but part of the price is support. Support costs Sony (and any other corporation) resources and allocating those resources can be cheaper in one country then in the other. You are demanding something that you have no right to. Why else do you think a PS3 is cheaper in Japan than in i.e. EU. Sony has got to make the difference. Its your risc, not Sony’s.
Also, the logic of importing something –> it brakes in your own country –> domestic support won’t repair it for free –> you will never buy something of that corporation again is really insane (but totally up to you). If you want domestic support, buy domestic stuff – its as simple as that. There are some corporations that let you buy products worldwide and they offer support worldwide. That’s their way of giving service and other corporations aren’t obligated to do so.
P.S. You can always try to reformat your HDD on your PC. Its a SATA connection so it will fit. Format it and put it back in. Very big chance that you will boot up again, I’ve read it on many boards already. You have nothing to lose (exept your save games – but you will lose those anyway, if Sony repaired it). This will take you one hour max.

My PS3’s fan went wild when I 1st popped in a DVD. Maybe the freeze is due to an overheath problem and then our problems look quiet similar.

Its the axiom of FW support with added functionality: people always want more. People even ask just because they can, and not because the functions sound logical (like that we need multiple logins… WTF?)
What is wrong with some of you? Sony has a problem with their FW update and some how you’ve convince yourselves that it was Microsoft’s doing? Are you insane? Are you really that dilusional?
So instead of accepting the most likely answer, which is Sony engineers missed some minor issue with the FW before release and are working out the kinks as we speak, some of you have concocted a wild tale of corporate espionage and tampering. It may be hard for some of you to accept but Sony isn’t infallible.

No problems from my end. Downloaded it yesterday, played through and successfully completed ‘Metal Gear Solid 4′(awww yeah), then watched two DVD’s and it was fine (knock on wood)!
I’ve noticed that when you change themes on the ps3 for some the icons (like the trophy) have either gone missing or are replaced with “?”. Sony released new themes on the europe psn sore today and even they have problems with icons. Has anyone else had this yet?

Unfortunately, that’s the nature of so many of the ridiculous fanboys that own these gaming consoles.
They’ll believe the most ridiculous things just to defend their own console (or the company who makes it).
They have so much importance wrapped up in their silly little gaming machine that they’ll literally believe ANYTHING to avoid the realization that their machine is far from perfect (or that the manufacturer made mistakes).
Man, their lives must be empty to care so much about such a silly little machine.

I lived there, bought one, and have since moved back. Different from importing it to get it cheaper.
Nothing’s happened yet anyway- I am just worried when I DO update it that it will go tits up. Thanks for the rather condescending replies, and the helpful part regarding the hard drive. Hopefully it wont come to that as all other updates have worked fine!

I hope somebody who works on the PS3 os reads this. I don`t know if it has been to your attention, but I think the most urgent correction you have to make is proper external srt subtitle support. Please, before releasing the stable 2.4 could somebody make this happen. It`s five minutes work, guys. Consider that you are doing this for the environment. You are forcing people to many hours of video transcoding just to incorporate subtitles. And at these hours the cpu of the computers work at 100%. Imagine how much energy is spent all over the world for processing video files and subtitles, just for making them viewable at the PS3. And all these without justifiable reason. No brand dvd players at 20$ read external subtitles without the need of tricks. If for some reason you don`t want to do this, at least do what you did for divx, for h264 too. So that the subtitles for avc files can be incorporated the same way for Divx files, in a few minutes, without the need of long transcoding.
Proper external srt subtitle file support now and at the next firmware update include more codecs for the video player. Most popular first …..
I really want this update because people who have the update have been mailing me while I was in a game and not being able to read the full message or reply got me really mad. Please release the updaate again!

Mines fine, other then the fact it tends to hang alot and has totally locked up my PS3 on 2 ocassions while using In-Game XMB while playing GTAIV
let me elaborate about my threat to switch to xbox.
I love my Sony products. I rate them highly as they are of high quality and perform better than most other rivals.
My PS3 is my first choice console and I have endured through countless game delays, and technical issues with help from my brand loyalty.
Its become increasingly clear however, that the PS3 is a broken product and it will continue to play catch up throughout most of its product life cycle.
I have 15 PS3 games compared to my 1 xbox360 game. over 100 hours of game time is now lost thanks to the release of a poorly tested firmware update. Its also my fault for thinking the PS3 was invincible.
So now what for me? I wont have a functioning PS3 for a month so I’ll be buying BFBC for the xbox instead.
Threatening to support a rival is far from childish ranting. Mature consumers are smart enough to look past the brand loyalty. They will ultimately protest by spending their dollars where they will receive better value. I’m not about to give up on Sony yet, but if this had happened to you, the strength of your brand loyalty would be wavering too.

hey i was playing warhawk for like 5 hours right after i got 2.40 and i didn’t get a single trophy… Is there gunna be a patch to download or what?
i downloaded 2.40 yesterday from my pc onto a memory stick but i didnt install it on my ps3 so are u saying that i shouldnt install it
No one cares if you switch to 360 buddy, its your choice, and you are the one missing out, and in the end it will be your loss, trust me.
So go ahead, ONE consumer threatening to switch to the competition isn’t going to do one bit in change.

I’m not threatening to leave the Sony camp because I’m a child. Far from it. I’m doing it because I’m an aware consumer and since Sony isn’t really responding to the insane amount of displeasure on their own blog, let alone around the internet, the only voice that I feel will be listened to, is my wallet. So, though I don’t have one yet, and my seething hatred for Microsoft’s business practices are large…slowly, day by day, I’m chipped away and one of these days I can see me walking home from Future Shop with an Elite to replace my PS3.
On top of that, I will go out and buy a Samsung Blu-Ray player to replace my current PS3 which doesn’t have a sleep timer. Yes, a sleep timer is THAT important to me.
BTW, is there a problem with the Blog and posting, or am I being moderated now ? Because it now takes forever for me to see my own post.
my ps3 almost works with the 2.40. I got one problem: it doesn’t connect my usb-harddisk anymore. the symbol in the upper right is working and working… but nothing. anyone with the same problem?
Ive never had any issues period..
it downloaded perfectly. 256gb hardrive recently installed so maybe thats why?

You know, you have a pretty poor attitude on here for anyone who expresses displeasure with Sony. It’s rather sickening.
You know who should care about people switching camps ? Sony should care, and thankfully you’re not in charge of their PR department or you would run them straight into the ground.
How many business tell consumers, “if you don’t like, go elsewhere then” ? I’ll give you a hint, no successful one. Not even Microsoft. In fact, Steve Ballmer said he’d rather you pirate Windows, than use something else. Know why ? Because you can’t treat the userbase like their opinions don’t matter.
Don’t you find it odd that, increasingly, there are more and more people coming here and complaining. And where better to complain ? The “Official-Unofficial US boards” ? Pfft, come on.
If you don’t like what someone says, fine, but you don’t have to get on your soapbox and shout at every person who shows anger towards Sony. After all, Sony messed up pretty big this time. And it’s not just gamesblow who thinks it.
Phew, am I glad I’m not experiencing “any” problems. Though why don’t you guys test it like a 100 times than 10 times before releasing it? I hear people complaining their entire PS3 has screwed up. That shouldn’t happen, especially not with a hardware update.
Though I wonder are people experiencing this with “older” PS3 versions, as I hear from people with a 60GB in Europe having this problem, but the ones with a 40GB (including me) don’t.

I am a male university graduate with a high paying job aged between 20-35. This is one of Sony’s key target markets. This technical issue won’t effect “ONE” consumer.

Funny how people see someone complaining, then get on the complain wagon. What is the big deal here? We got in-game XMB, we got trophies, we got great stuff here, and like Eric said this is only phase one.
What are people REALLY complaining about? What if rumors never came out about 2.4 coming in June and whatnot, then what would you be complaining about? If it had came out when it was ready rather then being forced, would you be complaining? I think you are just complaining for the sake of it. You wanted to have access to the friends section of the XMB while in-game, we got it, something you have been begging for for a year now, and then you complain about something else, and all of a sudden that feature means nothing?
Seriously, its like some people are whining over nothing at all.
