643 0

Hi everyone! We know you’re all patiently waiting for the next PS3 firmware update, v2.40, which includes XMB access in-game and Trophy support. The good news is that it’s coming soon, and you can now see how accessing the XMB from in-game will work in this video demo.

Shortly, we’ll be posting another video here on the PlayStation.Blog that shows the Trophy feature in action for the first time. At that time we’ll provide even more details on how firmware v2.40 will enhance your PLAYSTATION 3 experience.

  • amazing great job

  • @ VenomX:

You are right. Popular games will probably be updated if Sony decides to use this feature. If the developers feel like it, that is.. :P

  • All I can say is THANK YOU!

  • Will 2.4 have in-game chat support?

  • I actually got up at 7:00 on a summer weekday to see this, and you did not disappoint me. THANK YOU SONY!!!

  • Great update. Please add a sleep timer though. Great idea. I don’t like to wake up in a suana of a room to hear my 60GB still whirring away after I fell asleep to a film.

  • WOO!!!!

I hope you smooth out the loading of all the thumbnails. it looks annoying, thanks!!!

  • Thank you Sony! Please give it to us before E3!!! After all…wouldn’t you want us to try it out first?

  • I got to admit, this was way better than I thought

  • @403, could you think of anything more trivial to complain about?

  • great news! finally:)

  • Alright!, good job Sony!

A lot of gamers are overly excited, and happy at the moment, just a few solid questions though…

Will in game xmb work in it’s entirety(ie. custom music) during disk based gameplay (ie. MGS4/ps2 compatability)etc, only installable/downloadable games were displayed in the video… This worries me, please if you have any spare time whatsoever, answer ASAP. As it is detrimental to my current gaming decisions.

  • Thank you to all the members at sony who made this possible and for putting up with all of our nagging about having these features, thank you can twait for the next video

  • at last some official info! , am eager for the ingame music option more than anything, cheers for the video!

  • Yeah. This is good news
this is godzilla size good news!
Not only that, but all the whinning and crying for ingame xmb is over !!!

  • Lol, patiently waiting? There was nearly a riot over here.

But anyway, XMB is looking fantastic so far. I especially love the fact you guys added the date/time as well. Sometimes I get carried away with my PS3 at night so I don’t usually know how late it is.

    Excellent job Sony!

  • Yeah Boy!

  • Thanks Eric. I believe the the video is everything and more that we requested. :)

  • OMG WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • Eric will this update let us remain signed into the PSN with PS2 games? Also will we be able to send messages with PS2 and PSOne games from the XMB? Really annoying that I’m isolated from the PSN because I decide to go back and play an old game.

Thanks for the Video! I can’t wait to get my hands on 2.4

  • yessssss

  • This is by far the most comments I’ve seen this early in the morning! Anyway, this is really nice. Should make a ton of people happy.

Like a few people asked, will it work with PS2/ps1 games? Nice touch on the clock. I’ve personally been wanting that in there.

  • I was wondering, when is the flash player on the ps3 browser going to be updated higher than Flash 7?

  • Kaze that’s a good question. I believe it should work with PSOne games but for PS2 games, the PS3 disconnects from the PSN and I believe it emulates PS2 hardware. That’s the way it is now. Maybe this update fixed that.

    Hopefully Eric will answer that.

  • Thank you so much Eric. Greatly appreciated. Can’t wait for the update and thank you for the time upon pressing the PS button. :)

  • Awesome ^^, just out of curiousity (or however you spell it), how many programmers worked on the 2.4 FW update?

  • @ 419 Lanhamkidd
The browser is NetFront from Access and Adobe doesnt want to upgrade the flash player…. so….

  • Oh yea I’m overjoyed about this update, It seems to lump together all of the things that should have been there from the very start with ps3, but were not…

For example, I had boughten my psp a year or two prior to ps3’s release, I wasn’t an early adopter, but I still managed to obtain the stronger, and louder, more custom-friendly psp-1000, and had rather gotten use to not only being able to see the time from it’s desktop* ‘figuratively speaking’ (*xmb) but also being able to follow the channels certain game companies(ie. rockstar games via’ the psp GTA’s) provided for gamers to utilize custom soundtracks during gameplay, This was a huge burden on both Sony, and it’s biggest fans, as it’s pretty much one of the only real serious negatives about the system at all…

This takes the list of things xbox fanboys poke fun at ps3 fanboys for, and tears it to slivers of unrecognizable scraps of paper…

Keep up the great work Sony…

    BAm BAm BAm BAm!…

Looks like you finally decided it was time to start trying again. I think you’ve proven your point with this, and you’ll see your lifelong fans follow the rest of us, when it comes time to upgrade to current gen.

  • @408
I entirely agree with you. Is the hard drive based games only available to play custom music? Lets hope for the best anyway

  • YESSSSSSSSS

  • AWESOME! The PS3 is blowing away the competition! oh wait thats right the PS3 has no competition! Keep up the GREAT working Jeff,Eric, Grace and all of Sony!

  • Update the browser! Throw some money at Mozilla and get Firefox cranking please!

  • @425 hijacker77

Yea it would be almost pointless if you can not access the custom music during disk based/online play. I know this would be one of the most trying times for the system to have custom music playing, but it’s pretty much the most practical use of custom music, and something I’ve done with my pc for many years, and also something I had modded my ps2 to do.

  • GREAT STUFF GUYS!!!!!!!
    Update is looking sweet!!!!

  • i wasnt expecting in-game music, when i saw that i almost [DELETED] my self. in-game game launching is kool

  • Thanks for the great walkthrough. The anticipation is killing me.

  • Can we voice chat with a friend regardless of what game we’re playing like on Xbox Live? Can the in-game XMB be pulled up during a PS2 game or PS1 game? I would hope – no, I expect – for that to be the case.

  • Best Blog posts ever :D

  • good, i hope it gets release soon.

  • ERIC..you are the man.

    Thanks SONY

  • Great news!
is there a “shuffle” button to play random song in all our music or we have to make a playlist?

  • Hello Eric,
Is Sony going to ever incorporate the LocationFree application in the PS3? I’d like to use my system as a DVR. I know that playtv will most likely allow for this however, I’d like to be able to use my existing equipment.

  • Nice….now i will watch the trophy video as that is what i am looking forward to the most.

  • 2 questions Eric:

    1) Is there in-game private chat?
    2) Are there cross game invites?

Hopefully I’ll find out on July 2nd.

  • Nice use of The Go Team in the music demo ;)

  • Still no word on multiple PSN login’s. I share a PS3 with some other people and It would suck if we were playing a game with trophies and those people who were just using the same account but logged in as a guest (your PSN with a (1) or whatever next to it)would have to replay the game later with thier login just to get thier own trophies. Warhawk allows 4 players online on a local machine allow us to have 4 PSN Id’s logged in too. That would be great.

  • Very nice… good work on the clock. Easily overlooked, but extremely useful. Hopefully I can stream music while playing a game, as I don’t keep it on my PS3 HDD. Hmm, and it’s funny how much influence Google has these days.

  • Awesome, I’ve been waiting for in-game xmb messaging forever. Great to see that’s going to be delivered soon, thanks Eric. >:3

  • oh wow, its as if they are trying to introduce something new to the world. nice one sony, lets make the customers look like they dont know about in-game interfaces from the 360. also, why would i be looking forward to ANOTHER 250 MB download?? do they seriously think that i want to wait 20 mins to download an update when they could just release a patch and get it done in 30 seconds!

  • NIIICE!
I can’t wait for the chat and the music. That is totally awesome!
