Firmware (v.2.40) Walkthrough Part 1: the XMB

643 0

Hi everyone! We know you’re all patiently waiting for the next PS3 firmware update, v2.40, which includes XMB access in-game and Trophy support. The good news is that it’s coming soon, and you can now see how accessing the XMB from in-game will work in this video demo.

Shortly, we’ll be posting another video here on the PlayStation.Blog that shows the Trophy feature in action for the first time. At that time we’ll provide even more details on how firmware v2.40 will enhance your PLAYSTATION 3 experience.

  • Great work guys!

FWIW, I think the reason he said it would work with “most” games is that they probably did not try it with EVERY game in the ps3 library, and cannot say for sure that they all play nice with it. I have a feeling that most of the big titles will work with it, even something older like say, Uncharted (I hope :)).

I for one, and just happy to be able to play my own music. In your face Rockstar! Don’t letting me have my custom radio stations… *grumble grumble*

  • Hey yuffiek133 shut the f up Xbox fan boy!

Sony is doing the best they can!

  • Just happy about being able to play my own music instead of the game’s orginal music. Still a cool firmware update.

  • Sony please add more Codec support!

.MOV and better Xvid and WMV support!

Also please update the browser and Flash Player to version 9!

AWESOME! The PS3 is blowing away the competition! oh wait thats right the PS3 has no competition! Keep up the GREAT working Jeff,Eric, Grace and all of Sony!

how is it blowing away “the competition” when its STEALING ideas from “the competition” just goes to show that fanboys only know what the commercials tell them, not what the general concensus is. sony is good, but not THAT good. btw, cant wait for the IG-XMB. its about darn time.

I hope you are listening Sony :)

  • This looks awesome! Thanks, Eric!

  • Thank you guys! I’ve been waiting for this since I got my PS3 at launch!

    Eric,

You got me almost crying when at the end of the vid you had the internet browser open and said “I know you been waiting long for this” and I thought you were about to say that the Flash Player had been upgraded!!! BUT NO…

Hopefully soon… BUT THANK YOU FOR HELPING PUT ALL THE RUMORS TO REST!

  • @ ScarSlasher [20]

LMAO!! Same here man, same here. XD

    @ Modus [53]

Multiple PSPs using remote play at once? Lol, I doubt that’s possible, and even it it was why would you really need that? :P

Sony is truly getting closer and closer to XBL, even though one is free and one costs. This is great, this time next year, we will have even more sweet features!

  • Yes!!!

  • Any updates on if there will be voice messaging?

  • lol, he as a smirk on his face like you knows what the reaction is going to be once on the net.

All I can say is, it’s about time. I consider the second video the real video because it will be Sony’s answer to XBOX 360 Achievements.

  • Eric,

Will the In Game Music feature be able to reproduce music from an external storage device?

    PS. Nice!!!

  • oh and one more question, what is it with sony’s COMPLETE aversion to adding flash to their browser?? i think i, and a great many others, want that more than IG-XMB… and for that matter, their fantasically numerous amount of updates…

  • This is very much Appreciated :D, now not having a hedset isn’t a problem any more!

  • Bring that s*&# on already!!! Thank You!

  • can we send game invites 2 our friends through the xmb and or follow our friends from our friend lists??

  • YES!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE YOU ERIC!!!

  • awww damn. the way you were talking made it sound like u could play two games at a time. One from the PSN and the other from the blu-ray disc. until u said, that ain’t possible. damn you. u raise peoples hopes up only to lay it down on them hard with the bad news. damn. u fail.

two years late. but at least its finally here. congrats.

now. u need to update the flash player on PSP, so we can watch videos and youtube. we should also have the opportunity to stream videos on the RSS channel, so we wouldn’t have to download them all and save them to our memory stick.

¡¡get that done for the PSP pronto!!

  • Eric, you had my heart stop for a second when I saw it Internet Icon in the in-game XMB. Ahh well, such wishful thinking…

You guys should add ‘game-hibernation’; which, would allow you to save the contents of the system ram to the hard-drive, so you can use applications that require additional ram; or, even take out the disc and put in a movie.

  • @464

Are you retarded? Why on Earth would you want to play 2 games at once? And 2 years late? I think you mean 18 months.

  • Cool, But waht about the PSN CARDS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @459: I believe that’s an Adobe problem, not a Sony thing. I think the PS3 browser’s plugin is running Flash 7.

  • OMG!!! now i can play 24 hours a day instead of my normal 23 THANK YOU

  • you should be able to view photos while you play a game on the PSN or on Blu-ray. I thought the PS3 can handle tis type of stuff. WHat about the cell processor Sony touted as the main attraction of getting this console over the Xbox 360. And the little 8 SPEs it has to back up the power of the cell processor. I mean come on, Get to work! You should be working 7 days a week. Work your ass off like them developers at EA on them football games or whatever. Work all day and night. Get into crunch mode and tweak the hell out of the PS3 XMB and PSP. Work on the streaming videos on PSP’s browser.

I mean its understandable on the PSP if you can’t do that while playing a game (even though it should already be happening) but if u can’t do simple things like viewing your photos or use the slideshow feature or use the internet browser while you paused a game on the PSN, then what the hell are you doing over there. Playing around with monkeys. taking lunch breaks. playing MGS4. get to work u mofos.

  • i like that change game feature

  • Nice, that will rocks for sure.

    @monkeyisland

LOL at you, you actually said you have a 2 years old daughter and still acting like a little girl???

    Hahaha, xbot so much???

  • the trophie vid is up.

  • I like the new stuff! With the addition of the new friends limit of 100 can we get a new sorting feature. Kind of like the folders for Videos, music, games columns. Some way to categories 100 friends by what games we share in common or groups. Thanks again

  • Thats great….but no in-game chat? That was one of the things I was most looking forward to. Its a real disappointment that it isn’t included in 2.40. Hopefully we will get it next update…

  • Aweesome thanks Eric

  • @475

In-game chat will probably come soon, but until then IN-GAME XMB FTMFW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Custom Soundtracks… ME DREAMS HAS COME TRUE!.

    THANKS GOD, SONY!

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT* YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

  • OMG This is going to rock! And shut up those In Game XMB whiners!

  • Awesome! I cant wait for the new Update.
Do we have a confirmed release date?

  • Cool In game Music, XMB, and Google search! yeah!

  • damn, this will be a sweet update.

there’s really nothing better about live compared to the PSN. shazammm

  • Man, sometime just sit down and think about how much better the PS3 is today then when it launched. Systems don’t stay the same anymore do they?
I tell you, this is going to be the longest 48 hours of my life..

  • I am glad pressing the PS button in single player games does not pause the game by itself. You have to manually press pause in the game first if you want that to happen. During single player games I usually want to go out to the XMB because I am at a point where I am waiting for something so the XMB can be used to pass time doing something. Obviously pressing pause in multiplayer can not pause the game because you could get disconnected… so no worries there.

  • Eric this is amazing news and thank you guys at sony for making this happen.

I just have one question about the update, can my friend and i play to different games and still have a voice chat? If you guys already thought of that is great but if u havent maybe next that we be nice also.

Thanks again keep up the good work!

    ALL PRAISES TO THE PLAYSTATION

  • Heckz ya. I can’t wait for 2.40. Good stuff Sony.

I do question one thing, and its not a big deal, but why not have the game enter its pause state automatically when you hit the PS button instead of having the user execute it?

Personally I can see the benefit from having the user do it but I’m sure it might confuse some people.

  • One of the new in-game xmb features is to view your DOWNLOADING. can we now download things while playing an online game or is downloading still limited to offline?

  • A-W-E-S-O-M-E!!! Seeing as how you announced this BEFORE E3, I’m excited to see what your big announcements turn out to be!

  • We need Voice chat as a feature of in-game XMB!!

And also make it so that we can use the Internet Browser in game also.

  • Sweet I love how they’ve done this, Awesome Can’t wait, though my Friends list(lack thereof) looks pretty sad lol

    PSN= Tparsons5150

  • I love sony!

  • A clock, thank you :-)

  • Not bad Sony, keep up the good work.

  • Oh, I forgot hahahaha. I got some PSN friends but with the new tap of 100 PSN friends I need some more isn’t ^__^

Add me if u want guys.
