  • Oh , i hope not to see anyone of you cheering for In-Game XMB on the next firmware

  • @246

Sure the total lack of worthwhile content on PSN has occured despite Sony doing absolutey nothing wrong.

Their performance and decision making have both been flawless and this is the result.

    /sarcasim

  • Now this is more like it!

Noel Silvia I love your comments I love the straight forwardness (if that’s a phrase)

It’s nice to see some off the “off the cuff” comments in here not some PR BS.

Personally I like to see “human” comments in here.

Means Sony does have a heart or at least people working there with a heart. =)

I don’t mind the store update(s) there is always next week and for everyone else think about it this way unless your independently wealthy you can save $ for the following week.

Really the PSN isn’t the problem there really isn’t a problem I mean realistically you can’t have super awesome content come out week in and week out there is going to be a break eventually.

Firmware is a different story and I can’t wait for Eric’s next Firmware post I can only hope I don’t have to declare him a tool again. lol

Frustration for the PSN update I could understand if perhaps the Xbox got something we didn’t that is not exclusive but then again I only own a PS3 and that’s all I care about I don’t look what Xbox gets.

Now onto the Avatars on the XMB … new ones are great but can or will the system ever support custom avatars? Is this a system limitation or an ethical one? As a graphic artist myself I would love to create my own avatar for use on my friends list and as a fellow graphic artist Noel I am sure you can understand that desire. I would like some light shed on that issue.

I can most definitely say we have gotten Sony’s attention with this blog post.

I would also like to say that although some people may make personal attacks on people I truly hope I speak for everyone when I say these comments are one made out of frustration and are good natured, we as gamers don’t mean any harm to anyone at Sony we are just very passionate or at least I am about the PS brand.

So to finalize this post I would like to thank you Noel Silvia for your comments and your ear eerr eyes and we all look forward to next week’s update and the continued support of the PS brand from Sony and the individuals that make this blog such a great place!

    Thank you!

  • Jeebus Cripes… No in-game XMB, STILL!? REALLY, SONY?!

A year after you’ve known well that it is ESSENTIAL to putting you on the same page as the 360 in versatility. (cross-game voice-chat, in-game messaging, full music library access and playback during gameplay)
What is wrong with you people?!

Also, GET OFF YOUR @#$&* and get us THESE games on the PS1/PSP downloads section of the PSN Store:

    1. Metal Gear Solid
    2. Tomba
    3. Einhander
    4. Ergheiz
    5. Resident Evil
    6. Resident Evil 2
    7. Final Fantasy VII
    8. Final Fantasy Chronicles
    9. Blood Omen: The Legacy of Kain

If I see one more *%^$ing racer, “extreme” sports game, or crappy platformer, I don’t know what I’ll do.

  • @ Noel

Thanks for your answers and your time. I think everyone here appreciates that you take some time answering us and trying to help us the best you can. Thanks again!

  • Man, that’s why i pointed out the two specific lines:

Sony claims that the developers have to initiate content.

The Developers say that Sony has to initiate contact.

So by their logic on those two posts, nothing will ever get put on the PSN store?

  • er.. that should say “initiate contact”.

  • What is going on with SCEA and SCEE? What have they done to scare away any 3rd party support? Most publishers /developers don’t even bother to put games on the network. Apparently if I read this right from the comments by Noel it’s up to the consumer to beg the 3rd party company to put their games on the network not the platform holder who should be serving the best interest of their consumers. Is the approval/certification process that big of a mess? Even internal Sony games like Dark Mist and now Afrika are shunned by the Sony European and American divisions that seem to forget that many people bought the system to play these types of Japanese games along with their Western games since the original playstation. Speaking of which where are the Japanese role playing games? This is getting ridiculous at this point. I was forgiving during the first year of the system since it was new ground but Microsoft had an already established model and even Nintendo’s model started out strong that Sony could have followed and improved upon not make one worse. Granted things have improved at a crawling pace after countless [DELETED] from everyone which is where alot of the frustration comes from by alot of the people who post here who ask for the same thing week after week. The Japanese division seems to update more than once a week at times something that is unheard of from the other two branches.

One major concern I have is that there has been literally next to squat from major 3rd party companies besides Capcom which just put out Super Puzzle Fighter after a damn near 9 month delay in Europe. Yes other territpries operate with different licensing rights and such but looking at the Japanese store with a lot of 3rd party PSone games it’s hard to believe all this certification and testing garbage. At least they can buy different stuff while waiting for more 1st party original games that more often than not lack a demo and/or are overpriced. I’ve resorted to Ebay at this point for my PSone games because by the looks of it nothing will come from waiting for SCEA and SCEE to do anything about it. At least someone is happy to be getting my money.

It’s obvious something is going on because I can’t believe this is all incompetence 1 year+ after the system launched. Especially with arrogant PR bullcrap comments from the likes of SCEA’s John Hight with his quality vs quantity or “flooding the store with content” nonsense. There has to be something happening behind the scenes that Sony or 3rd parties aren’t talking about. I appreciate that they sent someone out here to die by trying to calm down people who are rightfully frustrated week after week of nothing. I’m not even going to get into the deluge of broken promises, delays after delays, lack of features that should have been there in the first place, or mention spending $400-600+ on the system since I have lowered my expectations month after month thinking that these concerns will be addressed.

A while back someone posted that a global store with all kinds content was outside the realm of possibility because of “logistics”, “legal issues”, etc but this reeks of crap. I would be inclined to believe this if Microsoft wasn’t doing just that with little to no problems. It seems only Sony can’t get this sorted out for some magical reason. It’s very disappointing to see people try to be upbeat and cheerful about getting whatever happens to get updated weekly because it’s “free” and thus this invalidates any right as a consumer to complain.

  • WE want firware 2.40 and we want it now WIth that said BRING MORE CONTENT AND GAMES /DEMOS TO THE PSN >>>>your loseing brownie points every week

  • @ Noel Silvia

Although your comments were sarcastic, i found them to be very amusing. I would rather have those types of comments than
“when are psn cards coming out?”
    “yes they are.”
Also even though the Psn updates have been good lately they are still ok. i mean rock band tracks every week. Thats great and it could be worse they could just update the store once a month. i would rather have a few bad updates evry week then one semigood one evry month.

  • So, when should we expect an update that will make PSP games playable through the PS3? The white system is already working on an attachment to their console that will allow their portables system’s games to play, just as they have done with all of their past portable systems (GB, GBC, GBA). Is Sony going to step up to the competition? When will we be able to play PSP games in USB mode when the systems are attached?

  • @hobo-1..

Hobo, I’m in favor of the “quality over quantity” list… I’m not sure how many of us on here have seen the Wii-stuff that’s been put out, but a lot of those games (and the proposed games) are nothing but “shovelware”.. and I do NOT want to see that on the PS3.

Unfortunately, the quality games on the other hand, are few and far between for the NA market. I can even accept the games that are not “Superstar” quantity (Rocketman for instance).

But Sony has to realize that the droughts are frustrating their customer base… and there are ways to at least quell this by taking some very simple steps that they seem to refuse to do.

But on our end,as customers, we have to admit, we’ve been through droughts like this before for weeks at a time. And yes those droughts are frustrating.

  • @246

The break room at BK doesn’t count as an office. Whining about whiners is whining, you dolt.

  • @hobo-1

Actually, John Hight is the only one at SCEA doing his job well. He said he wanted to “protect us from too much content”, and it’s pretty bloody obvious he is going above and beyond the call of duty on that one. But in all seriousness, I find it hilarious how John spins crap third party support as “stressing quality over quantity” the same way nintendo did in the N64 days.

Except that the N64 actually did have quality. The PSN has neither quantity or quality, so stressing one or the other makes no sense, especially when the competition is doing both. Like I said before, the Xbox originals program on the 360 has long passed our “classic” PSone list in quality, and will sooner than later pass it in quantity as well. Considering that program updates very infrequently, and is half as old as the PSone feature, thats pretty pathetic.

Boy, if you had told me years ago the Xbox successor would be a bastion of Japanese content, while the PS3 would be americanized garbage, I would have laughed in your face.

  • What happened to the new MGS4 trailer??? I wanted to download that one to my PS3!.

And no new demos, or games!? Fail :(

  • Noel thanks for answering all of the questions that have come up on here. The issues with licensing are something that will continue to be worked out with time.

As far as everyone arguing about who to blame about the lack of content, I think it is a pointless argument. From what I’ve read, we just need to place the request with both parties. Companies aren’t going to release something that they don’t think is going to sell. Make it apparent to both parties that it will sell and then you’re good to go.

I look forward to seeing the continuing growth and development of the PS Store.

  • @173

PSN being free has nothing to do with the online store, as the other two companies allow free access to their owns tores, both of which are vastly superior to the playstation store in every way. Again, PSN being free has nothing to do with the sorry state of the North American online store, which by any standard at this point, is nothing short of a running joke.

    Hey, everyone.
Well, I promised to follow up with everyone and have a couple answers for you on some of the common questions that popped up:

Avatars: You’ll be happy to know that more avatars are currently in the works and should appear in the next few months. When the selection is updated, we’ll try to post something here as well as via the InfoBoard.

SingStar songs: New songs should be hitting the SingStore within the next few days. I’ll double-check and try to get a more solid date for y’all. We’ll also try to get the InfoBoard updated to let you know when there are new songs without having to go to the SingStore every time.

If I don’t have any more updates for you today, hope y’all have a good weekend! Stay safe!

  • @268

    Thanks you very much for all the answears ^^;

  • @noel Silvia

asked this last week but it was kinda late so not sure if u seen it. but when is the post coming out with tips to making PS3 themes? or did i miss it?

  • @Noel I think I like reading all the comments and your replies more than I like reading the actual blog post. haha. Course I never RTFA on Slashdot either. :) I couldn’t agree more with your replies and I appreciate everyones work at SCEA. I’ve been applying for jobs there so I hope to maybe be working with you all someday soon. Peace.
    PSN: Top_Shelf

  • @ Everone…

Is it me or does every employee of Sony promise everything? Why is it everything coming soon? Why even bother mention it

  • NO ONE but the most extreme of d i c k head would hate on Noel after today. He does FAR more than any other employee has ever done on any post

  • Instead of reading comments. TAKE ACTION. Get off the internet and work on the PSN, it really looks plain

  • Noel,
I think at this point, it would be in Sony’s best interest to at least release some of the major points of the next “Rumored” firmware update. As every time a new article comes out something else gets added on and soon expectations will reach epic proportions.
As for me I really would love to see the communications features vastly improve cross game text chat and voice is a must.
Hopefully there are no existing patents (gasp) that prevent this from happening with relative ease and success.
Thanks for answering some of our questions hope you don’t get abducted by a PR ninja.

  • Not only do there need to be more avatars, they need to be categorized. Its hard to find what you want in 29 pages.

It would also be an improvement if the account management wasn’t an internet page too but i’m assuming this will change eventually.

  • Kudos to Noel for braving this minefield and answering some questions :)

  • @Noel

Please tell the people there in charge of the avatar creation, to please make some Bionic Commando Rearmed/BC and Metal Gear Solid 4 avatar please? That would be awesome.

    @273

I think people who are pro Sony in their defense, feel that we are gaining up on Noel personally, which is not the case, I doubt anyone harbors in hostile feeling toward Noel, as he is the only one really answering questions helping us out. The only thing we have distaste for is PR Answers, and statements like the one Noel made such as the “Just remember that the next update is only a week away if you’re still unsatisfied!”, however its the same exact stuff we complained about last week. Thus was the reason for my response to Noel personally about this update, back in comment number 62. Hell he does more than Jeff Rubenstein, who was “Supposedly” the official comments and info bringer, which lasted for a couple of months before he became scarce (BTW still waiting for those answers from GDC, Jeff :|). Anyway I think some have to realize that we are angry at Sony as a company (As far as the PS Store aspect) not individuals.

  • PSPMAN

Agreed. I thought Jeff was gonna be the face of the blog but now I suppose his position is more of “Overlord”

Although me and Noel talk every now and then and apparently Jeff is a VERY busy man.

  • Hey, here’s a thought for the people whining!
Go sell your PS3’s and buy a 360! Because seriously, we’re not getting anything from Sony! They’re just sitting around and not caring about our needs!

Seriously, you guys act as if this is ridiculously easy.

  • @268

I’m happy to hear that you’ll soon be adding more avatars. However, is there a possibility that we’ll soon be able to customise our own avatar? I’d love to be able to show off the pictures and animations i’ve created.

I can understand if Sony don’t want to do this – I can imagine you’d need some sort of moderation system for offensive avatars. But it woulld still be cool nontheless, and i’m hoping to see it in the future.

  • And one more thing: could we possibly see more game soundtracks in future Store updates? I loved the PixelJunk Monsters soundtrack, and I would really like to own more of Sony’s fantastic music from God of War, Shadow of the Colossus and Uncharted.

  • Bring Dark Mist to the US!

  • thatsmartguywiththefro

Thank you, Noel, for all the great responses. Though this really isn’t a one man job. Especially and artist’s, when most of our questions are about the content. If you can’t get the “mechanics” to talk to us directly could you at least relay the info over to us?

Also, what happened to the blog post about creating your own theme, was it cancelled or delayed?

And could you please answer a point quite a few people made, of the contradicting responses from 3rd party developers and Sony, regarding who we need to go to to get PSOne games on the Store?

Thank you for turning this lackluster blog post into an interesting discussion between the consumer and the “pizza boy”.

  • FilliamHMuffman

Regarding it being third parties responsibility and not Sony’s to get more third party games on PSN, Sony has to be more proactive to encourage third parties to bring games to PSN, too.

None of us know all the ins and outs of what it’s like to get a game published for PSN, but what third parties have said off the record is not good. Currently third parties have to submit their game separately for each territory, whereas for Xbox Live Arcade, a single submission covers all territories. The small developers who create these sort of games don’t have offices in three continents to be dealing with three branches of Sony and different ratings boards, etc. Even for a major publisher like Capcom, it took 9 WHOLE MONTHS to get Super Puzzle Fighter II released in Europe. It seems to me this is a turf issue and petty managers are protecting their little fiefdoms, and it’s hurting the platform and its customers. I thought Howard Stringer was brought in to break down these sort of institutional barriers? At any rate, I can’t blame other developers for not wanting to deal with that if even Capcom is struggling so much with it.

And secondly, there are a lot of PSOne titles for PSN that have been rated by the ESRB. Off the top of my head, Rayman, Street Fighter Alpha, Castlevania Chronicles, Buster Brothers Collection, Suikoden, and Legacy of Kain have been rated. Some of those games like Castlevania Chronicles were rated by the ESRB in the summer of 2007. What’s taking so long? It’s not like these games have licensed soundtracks.

I have nothing against you personally Noel, since it’s not your job to secure content for PSN. Unfortunately, the people that are aren’t listening to us or reading these threads, and frankly, I doubt they’re listening to the Sony employees who are posting in these threads either. For the longest time I gave SCEA the benefit of the doubt that they were trying to secure more content, but when “a,” they refuse to release a fully translated game that’s had positive word of mouth because it’s “too Japanese,” “b,” brag in interviews about how PSN is better than XBLA because XBLA has too many games and they don’t want more games for PSN, and “c,” also talk in interviews about how they look at over 20 games a month and reject so much stuff they can barely manage releasing 1 game a month, it is impossible for me not to place the blame at SCEA’s feet. It’s reached the point that PSN is so bad compared to XBLA and WiiWare that I think the people who are responsible for getting content should be fired or resign.

  • My wonder about avatars is… do you think we could get to a point where if you have like the PS Eye you can take a picture and make that a avatar, or possibly have like a running feed from your cam as a avatar when you’re logged on and with the camera running?

  • A couple month to release avatars? I can make a 100 of them in the day if you want, but that’s not my major complaint.

I think the biggest issue is that Sony is working as 3 separate entities; SCEA, SCEE, and SCEI (or J). Once one region gets content, the other two must wait. Compared to competition, they have the same content released on the same day across all regions, but with some exceptions of course. Take Everyday shooter for example. It took 4 MONTH for Sony to release the game on European store, 4 bloody month. Also Fatal Inertia just got released on the Japanese store, and EVERYTHING is in English. I think that would have saved this blog from all the complaints this week.
Also I wouldn’t mind games from other regions, hell I used to play Japanese and English games back when I used to live in Europe, and RE2 was one of them (all in Japanese).

  • @ Noel

Hey thanks first of for answering some of our questions even when you are not in the office. That takes diligence and a work ethic alot of us here dont have.

My question is, Will it ever be possible to have all of the stores combined as one entity? Perhaps when you log into the store you would choose either EU, NA, or JP and go from there? I wonder if that would help with the licensing problems at all…If there was a way to get around that, the PSN would fare off much better. What do you think “pizza guy?”

  • Avatar photo

    Hey, folks.
A lot of you have been asking about the “How To Make Your Own PS3 Theme” post that I promised some time ago.
Bad news is, you know what? That’s totally my bad that it slipped.
Good news is, I’ll have it all set to go for late next week.
Have a good weekend, everyone, and if you see me online in COD4, Warhawk, or GTA IV (PSN: NoelPS), please don’t all gang up on me. ;-)
    See you next week!

  • @Noel I noticed with your last comments to answer the questions you stated you would get more info on, there was still nothing about Dark Mist.

I guess it still falls under the trend I previously posted about.

  • @31, prove your the biggest? from the way it sounds, you surely are not.

meek update, only bright spot for me was the ever funny ETQW video projectile dysfunction. Stroyent video was funny, and with the website and actual phone number, interestingly viral. otherwise, yawn……

  • @280

Considering you yourself are whining about people who are whining, you’d have to sell your own as well, as you are a whiner, genius.

Believe it or not, a lot of the people in these comments are happy with the PS3 overall, but they are responsible adults with the correct perspective on gaming as a hobby only, and are not afraid to speak up when a feature of the console sucks as badly and blatantly as this one does, because unlike you they have not developed an emotional attachment to a black plastic box full of wires that you must feign is perfect in every way because any failing on it’s part would be seen by you as a failing of your own.

Thats a problem on your end pal, some of us are actual gamers, not free Sony PR agents posting from the mancave.

  • Noel, seeing as you mentioned working on the art for the store in a previous comment.

Couldn’t do us Europeans a favour could you, go over to SCEE and show them how to organise the store better.
Not only the way the menus are listed are silly, but the US store also has better icons too. :D

*is still waiting for the PixelJunk Monsters music on the EU store*

  • I’m just glad that people at Sony (in some capacity) are reading these posts – even if they’re giving somewhat inappropriately snarky responses. There are very clear problems with the PS3 and PSN the largest of which is game selection. Fact: There isn’t much. I want to praise Sony up and down, but I also want to use my PlayStation to well…. Play something.

I realize that a number of A-list titles are on their way, that’s great. But the PSN is the easiest way Sony could attempt to start filling in their own genre-gaps, and it’s just somewhat disheartening to see what would appear to be (though I’m sure it’s not in actuality) a total lack of effort.

I mean, it’s nice to see all these blog posts and articles and analysts talking about how Sony might pull ahead in 2012, but in reality I don’t think any gamer, certainly not a Sony fan, wants to wait another 4 years for the system to start to shine and strides in the content available on PSN could certainly help the system do exactly that.

People *want* to love their PS3s, I know I do. That’s why it’s even more frustrating when Sony can’t even give me a reason to want to turn the system on, on Thursdays. I think that’s where a lot of the frustration in other people’s comments comes from too :\ Free content is lovely. Good content I have to pay for? LoveliER.

  • Cute #292 but no.

“Considering you yourself are whining about people who are whining, you’d have to sell your own as well, as you are a whiner, genius.”

I am not *whining* about the whiners. I am trying to be rational and a bit reasonable. If people keep complaining and complaining, AND complaining about this stuff, it won’t make it go any faster. Sony=hardware company. MS=software company. Get it through your thick head. This is the first time Sony is doing something like this. These things take time.

There’s a difference between being rational and whining about the whiners.

“Believe it or not, a lot of the people in these comments are happy with the PS3 overall, but they are responsible adults with the correct perspective on gaming as a hobby only, and are not afraid to speak up when a feature of the console sucks as badly and blatantly as this one does, because unlike you they have not developed an emotional attachment to a black plastic box full of wires that you must feign is perfect in every way because any failing on it’s part would be seen by you as a failing of your own.”

I never said they don’t have a right to complain but they’re acting as if this is an easy task. Sony has been through hell since 2006/2007. They’ve come a long way since then. We as gamers/PS3 owners should realize this by now. I remembered feeling terrible about buying a PS3 back in 2007 because the only game I had was Ninja Gaiden Sigma. Things have changed, and they will ONLY get better. May I remind you that this is a marathon and not a sprint. Things *will* get better. People have to count on this instead of constantly bickering as if Sony is sitting on their asses and doing nothing.

“Thats a problem on your end pal, some of us are actual gamers, not free Sony PR agents posting from the mancave.”

Don’t call me a *pal*. I am a gamer as well. I didn’t buy my PS3 for bluray. I bought it for games, and the games *will* deliver.

    Patience is a virtue.

And like I said, if people don’t know what patience is, then they might as well get a 360 and watch the damn thing break on them within a month. I have heard people saying that to them the 360 looks better and better each day just because Sony isn’t filling in on the promises. Well, that’s why I said what I said.

OMG!!! We go from talking about the problems of the network and PlayStation Store to how to make PS3 themes??

That’s one huge subject change in order to get out of talking about the issues.

    Thanks for nothing!

Actually your point is moot from the beginning, because we are all consumers, thus we have a right to voice an opinion, when we feel that something is lacking, especially when its been promised, and yet not delivered. Essentially what you like to call “Whining” isn’t whining at all, but voice what we feel is a letdown. This is no different when you buy a product from a Dept. Store and it doesn’t work as its supposed to. Quite naturally you’re going to be upset as you’ve wasted time and money and voice your opinion, as well as trying to get a refund from the malfunctioned product, its the same here, minus the refund aspect, PSN (the PS Store in particular) is the broken product in this scenario, as it was pitched to have all these glorious things but it has yet to fulfill that entirely, yes we’ve gotten great content, but it is not on a consistant basis.

In any case, I’ll give the pro Sony defense debates, something to think about. If you guys constantly have to defend Sony week in week out, does this not show a discrepancy? Really think about that, if you guys have to say things like “Patience is a Virtue” etc. then it proves our entire point from the get go, does it not?

I know I’ve asked this a few times already, but since I haven’t heard any REAL news on it I’ll ask again. When will the Store have games based on the PS Eye Tech Demos we first heard about in Nov. 07 and then at GDC ’08??? This added to Eye of Judgement and LittleBigPlanet would really show that the PS3 has some really AWESOME innovative games.

At the bare minimum could any Sony staff reading this please pass this on or try to see what needs to be done for this to happen.

    Thanks!

I have not seen *opinions* here at all. I have heard people cussing out Sony as if it’ll make things much better. If you’re going to complain, then complain but do it in a reasonable manner. Every time I come here to hear about updates, it sounds like a freakin’ riot that just broke out. That’s why I’m barely here most of the time. I
m not saying ‘stay quiet and not say a word’. I’m saying to take it DOWN a notch.

I am not defending Sony. I believe that they should get moving with this stuff as well but I am not losing sleep over it. They gave me a system that’s reliable and I can play PS2 games I have never played because I only had a PS1 at the time. Sony acknowledges that they have much more work to do and it will get done.

    Let me ask you this.

Do you think that if YOU were a developer, you can get all of this stuff done RIGHT on the dot? Could you get tons of demos out and PSOne games out every other Thursday without breaking a sweat?

Be reasonable. The PS3 is a complex system and once again, like I’ve been saying all along, it takes TIME.

  • It’s nothing personal… but if everyone complains about your PS3 updates and other stuff, why you bought the PS3 console on first place, many people said…”that the X-BOX Live (X-BOX 360)experience both online games and in other things like updates and other stuff are better than PSN” …SCEA put your engineers and other employees to work more efficiently I am a PS3 FAN and I demanded, thanks.
