PAIN Update

114 3

It’s me, Travis, again. You know, the Senior Producer of PAIN. I want to thank everyone for responding so well to my first PLAYSTATION Blog post. It was the first time I had the opportunity to explain PAIN to more than a few people at a time. It’s always hard to describe a game that doesn’t play like anything currently on the market. That’s a good thing. No, it’s a GREAT thing. Now that we are close to releasing the first PAIN Theme (Downtown), I get to sit back and enjoy other PLAYSTATION 3 gamers bringing the PAIN. Wait… no I don’t.

PAIN is an evolving game and how it grows will largely depend on what people like you want to see (and play). I wish that I could tell you what plans we have for the next theme, but in the meantime, I can tell you that some of your responses to my first blog post made my arguments to management more “convincing.”

Imagine me screaming, “LOOK HOW MANY PEOPLE SAY WE SHOULD SHOOT (THIS PERSON) OUT OF A LAUNCHER! Please go make it happen!”

To know me is to know that this is totally something I would say. I’m really not well, you know. I am 6’3” and Super-Sized – this is sooo not a pretty picture.

ANYWAYS… I digress.

The reason I am posting now is because we made a new trailer for PAIN. We are close to the release date and it’s time I stopped talking about PAIN and started showing you PAIN. This video will show you the six modes of play available when we ship.

Single Player
PAINdemonium – This is your PAIN sandbox. Go nuts in this mode and collect points. The better you are in this mode, the harder you will be to beat in Multiplayer HORSE.
Mime Toss – Fly through the air and toss French Mimes through glass. (My fave single player mode). Do it in record time for trophies.
Spank The Monkey – Monkeys are taking over the city. Spank ‘em. You know you want to. This mode separates the kids from the adults in PAINful (the most difficult) mode.

Multiplayer
HORSE – All those smooth moves you perfected in PAINdemonium are worth points. Go head to head with your friends and see if they can make all the sweet launches you can.
Bowling – 10 Pins + Explosives + Cereal + Anvils – Common Sense X (1-4 Players) = The New Hotness
Fun With Explosives – Dude, it’s all about blowing yourself up as many times as you can. How can that possibly be ANYTHING but right?

So a common misconception people have when they see PAIN is to think it’s a 5 min experience. It’s so not that way. We’re shipping with six gameplay modes that keep you interested for a LONG time. You’ll see very soon. Until then watch the video.

And if you find yourself playing as Jarvis in PAIN and someone “doesn’t get it” press L2+X and tell them that “Team PAIN” has spoken.

So who would you like to see in PAIN? Vote in the poll on the right side of the blog.

  • Travis, I’m sure PAIN is going to be awesome, especially since the gamers are going to have so much input into the direction it takes.

I really like #62’s (epiphaniesarefun) idea for forts. This could be combined into a medieval theme featuring a village/castle. Each player could have certain “targets” to destroy, with each player taking turns trying to trash the other’s area. Of course the theme could include cool things like knights to toss, dragons that don’t explode, but breathe fire…

Another direction would be a PAIN World Tour; themes based on international “cities” (whether they’re real, or just composite cities featuring look-a-like landmarks). Then you could include character packs based on the locations (who wouldn’t want to toss an English guard, the queen, or a Bobby?). Maybe a Mountie, Beaver, and a Moose for Canada…..TONS of possibilities.

I also voted for the Sony Characters; it’s the most likely to happen. I’d like to see Celebs as well, but I think that could open you guys up to lawsuits, and we don’t want that, do we?

I look forward to downloading this in a few weeks. BTW, if anyone hasn’t read it already, IGN has a great preview for the game: http://ps3.ign.com/articles/834/834011p1.html

  • WOW! Does that look fun. I can’t wait. The music in the video is great. Is that song in the game? I would really like to be able to put other things in to the launcher just to see them smash into stuff…like a refrigerator, truck, or huge watermelon. Maybe this could be like a bonus round after scoring a certain amount of points or something. That would be fun.

  • buy it–download it–10 min.play it–delete it!!!

  • @ Travis
You are the freakin man and this game looks absolutely nuts… such a great idea

  • I have been salivating for this PSN game since gamers day in the summer and honestly i didn’t even think there were going to be more themes. that excites me even further. PAIN looks to be the best PSN title for the year but Rat Race is looking good too. it kills me how many great games are available on the PSN for reasonable prices. i think people miss out on knowledge of the PSN until they own a PS3, if more people who currently don’t own a PS3 knew about the advantages of a PSN account i think you’d find more people interested in the PS3. with games like PAIN, Rat Race and Super Star dust (which ROCKS and no that’s not a pun) to name a few i think people don’t know what they’re missing.

  • Can’t wait hehe this game is going to rule!!!

  • every thing look really cool, you can be sure i will buy this games. You do a amazing work cant wait to see the final product :) Keep going !!!!!!!

  • Thanks for the reply Travis :)

The downloadable content sounds terrific and something that’s really been lacking in downloadable games of late. Devs seem to release a budget game and forget about it.

Also glad to hear about the inclusion of Sony characters. Keep us posted :P

I know you won’t be able to put in people like Paris per-se, but can you atleast consider putting in look alikes with similarish names? Instead of Paris Hilton you could have some blonde chick by the name of ‘Maris Wilton’ or something that always says ‘That’s hot’. Espically like to see a Jack Thompson rip. You wouldn’t even have to give him a name, just call him ‘Idiot Lawyer’ or something.

Glad to see we’re having such a big input in the game :D Can’t wait until release Trav!

  • PSN cards please..

  • heh, I just can’t wait to spend some long-hours with “PAIN”!

though, Can’t help but notice something:
The billboards in the background of the downtown theme seem to really have ads in them. In one part, it features Buzz from BUZZ! The Mega Quiz on the PS2, and then in most of the other shots, there’s an ad for High Velocity Bowling, a fellow PSN title.

i guess what i’m trying to ask is:
Is this probably the first PSN game (or maybe even ps3 game in that matter) to feature changing in-game advertisements?

Not to say anything bad about it, just found that really interesting.

but enough of the ‘serious’ talk; I CAN’T WAIT TO GET MY “PAIN” ON!

  • i’m guessing from the lack of response to my question this will be another us only release that the eurotrash will be waiting months for once again?
or am i being needelessly cynical and we will in fact get it at the same time?
