PS5 update rolls out globally with new accessibility, audio, and social feature enhancements

PS Remote Play is now supported on more Android devices, providing new options to stream your favorite PlayStation games.

With the holiday season and a new wave of exciting game releases approaching, today we’re pleased to roll out an all-new PS5 system software update globally. Thanks to support from our beta participants, this update includes a number of features from the latest PS5 beta, including:

  • New accessibility features, such as using a second DualSense controller for assistance
  • New audio options that allow 3D Audio powered by Tempest 3D AudioTech to be enjoyed on compatible Dolby Atmos-enabled HDMI devices
  • New ways to connect with other players and customize your multiplayer sessions
  • Support for larger-capacity M.2 SSDs (up to 8TB).

Additionally, we’re also introducing new features like support for PS Remote Play on more Android devices alongside some new enhancements coming to PS App in the coming weeks.

Here are the highlights:

Newly announced features

PS Remote Play support on additional Android devices

  • PS Remote Play allows you to stream games from your PS5 or PS4 console to another device – including smartphones and tablets (iOS and Android), PCs and Mac – over the internet or through your home network. This provides you with more options to enjoy your favorite games even when you’re away from the living room.*
  • Starting today, the PS Remote Play app will be available on devices running Android TV OS 12.**
  • Here are the verified devices so far:
    • Chromecast with Google TV (4K model)
    • BRAVIA XR A95L model
  • To use Remote Play on these devices, search for the PS Remote Play app on your Android device to download and install the app.
  • To learn more about PS Remote Play, visit PlayStation.com.

New Voice Command options (U.S. and U.K. limited release)

  • Voice Command has been improved.
    • Say “Hey PlayStation, help” to activate Help content. You can now navigate between help content pages using Voice Command.
    • Say “Hey PlayStation, what’s new?” and you can now check for new PS5 voice commands and see the current PlayStation Plus monthly games lineup.
  • Note: Voice Command (Preview) is currently available in English for PS5 players with accounts registered to the U.S. and U.K.

New PS App enhancements

Later this month, we’ll also gradually roll out some new features for PS App globally, on iOS and Android. Just like the PS5 console updates, you’ll be able to react to messages with emojis and see a preview of someone’s Share Screen before joining the party on PS App.

PS5 Beta features rolling out globally today

Previously announced features that were part of the beta will also be included in the global release.

New accessibility features

  • Use a Second Controller for Assistance. You can now assign a second controller to one account as an assist controller, and use two controllers to operate your PS5 console as if you were using a single controller. This feature introduces a new way for you to enjoy games collaboratively with others or help a friend or child navigate a particularly challenging section of a game.
    • To use an assist controller, go to [Settings] > [Accessibility] > [Controllers] > [Use Second Controller for Assistance], and then turn on [Use Assist Controller].
    • You can use an assist controller when your main controller is a DualSense or DualSense Edge wireless controller, or a PS5-supported third-party controller.***

  • System UI Haptic Feedback. You now have the option to turn on haptic feedback effects while navigating your PS5 with your DualSense controller, DualSense Edge controller, or PS VR2 Sense controller.
    • When enabled, system sound effects for certain events will also be reflected physically through haptics, such as moving focus, reaching the end limit of a scrollable section, checking a box, or when you receive a notification or start up a game. This optional feature enhances immersion and is particularly useful for players with some level of sight or hearing disability, who appreciate the additional feedback on their inputs.
    • To turn on this feature, go to [Settings] > [Accessibility] > [Controllers], and then turn on [Haptic Feedback During Console Navigation].

Support for compatible Dolby Atmos-enabled audio devices

  • 3D Audio powered by Tempest 3D AudioTech can now be enjoyed by those who own compatible Dolby Atmos-enabled HDMI devices such as soundbars, TVs or home theater systems. Tempest 3D AudioTech specifically renders to the Dolby Atmos audio device in use – including overhead channels – allowing for even greater levels of immersion in the audioscapes of PS5 games. ****
    • To turn on Dolby Atmos, go to [Settings] > [Sound] > [Audio Output] > [Audio Format (Priority)], and then select [Dolby Atmos].

Social feature enhancements

  • Party UI update. You can now invite a player into a closed party without automatically adding the player into the group or creating a new group. Additionally, players can now send open or closed party invitations to groups instead of only individual players.

  • Share Screen Preview. When someone’s sharing their screen in a party that you can join, you’ll now see a preview image of their Share Screen, even before you enter the party.

  • Join friends’ game sessions easily. You can now easily see which of your friends are in an activity you can join under the [Friends] tab.
    • The Joinable icon will be displayed next to friends who are playing a game you can join.
    • You can join a friend’s game directly by pressing the options button and selecting [Join Game], or by selecting the ”Join” button on their profile card.
  • Game Hub tournaments tile. In the game hub, you can now see how many tournaments you’ve entered and the highest place you’ve achieved, as well as the start time for the next tournament. You can select the tile to see the full tournament list.

    • To adjust the beep sound volume, select [Volume].
    • To mute the beep sound, turn on [Mute Beep Sound].

Support for larger-capacity M.2 SSDs

  • You can now use an M.2 SSD with a maximum capacity of 8TB (up from the previous 4TB limit) to expand storage space on your PS5 console.
    • Important: M.2 SSDs must meet the requirements outlined on this page. Please read the page linked above carefully before purchasing any M.2 SSDs for use with your PS5.

We are truly grateful to our community for always providing us with valuable feedback. Let us know which updates you’re excited for!

*Remote Play requires broadband internet Wi-Fi with at least 5Mbps for use. For a better play experience, a high-speed connection of at least 15Mbps is recommended. The quality and connectivity of your play experience may vary depending on your network environment. Titles that require a VR headset (PlayStation VR or PlayStation VR2) or additional peripherals (other than a DUALSHOCK 4, DualSense, or DualSense Edge wireless controller) are not compatible with PS Remote Play.
**While the PS Remote Play app will be downloadable on devices running Android TV OS12, performance may vary depending on the device being used. We recommend setting your TV or monitor to low latency game mode. Depending on the signal conditions of Android TV built-in televisions or Chromecast with Google TV, you might experience input lag when using your wireless controller.
***A DualSense Edge wireless controller cannot be used as an assist controller. Some of the DualSense features, such as motion sensor, haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, will be automatically turned off when the controller is being used as an assist controller.
****Media app providers can update their apps on PS5 to support Dolby Atmos audio, giving users another way to experience immersive audio in movies, TV shows, and more in the future.
*****A PlayStation Plus subscription is required to use Game Help.

  • Can we raise the limit of hidden games in the library to 9999 instead of 999? Some of us are capped out and can’t hide any more

  • Please consider adding themes back on the PS5!!

  • I’m really excited about Sony adding Atmos to the PS5. I’m a huge home theater enthusiast and have an 11.2 Atmos/DTS-X set up. I was upmixing the sound but now I’ll have “native” audio output. Can’t wait to try this out

  • How can I turn off if I or friend joins party chat than I got party invite automatic?

  • How about just a basic web browser to watch streaming videos? But the
PS4 has it but the PS5 doesn’t? It’s like you guys took away more features than you added sometimes

  • Apparently this update changed how the messages menu works in the game base, but it’s not listed here?
Now you only have the pop-up menu for an individual chat and can’t go into a screen full version of said chat, makes screenshotting messages more annoying and am wondering if it’s a unintended change with the screen-sharing changes? Just very odd that it’s unmentioned in this blog.

    • Okay I’ve been wondering about this, I absolutely hate this change and hope the put how it was back

  • About time PS5 supports Dobly Atmos, I don’t understand why it took this long and the Xbox One seem to have support for it.

But whatever, happy but now my PS5 can take advantage of my surround sound system.

  • Please allow us to use the m.2 SSD as the default storage for media gallery/screen captures like videos and screenshots. I like to take pictures and videos of my games and the 1 TB internal memory is not enough. I am wasting time moving pictures and videos every time.

Also, allow us to back up saves to USB instead of cloud storage only.

    Thank you.

  • Could you please consider adding a volume accessibility option that will level the audio in reducing loud sounds?

Many TVs have this option to level volume so that the difference between loud sounds and quiet sounds can be leveled more evenly.

For example in movies where you have to raise the volume to be able to hear the dialog, but then action scenes become extrmely loud. There could be something to limit loud sounds to level the range of volume.

Those of us with hearing sensory issues would be extremely appreciative.

    Thank you

  • This is cool and all, but where are themes and folders which is all anybody and everybody has been asking for since launch?

  • Please bring back Activity Feed, I miss being able to check and interact with my friends gaming activities such as trophies, shared pictures… used to be a great way to socially bond.

  • I’m not a huge fan of the new party chat UI update, when I try to start a party with my friend it just shows it’s my party. Or when I try to start a group party with friends already in it it shows it as my party and not the group chat party. Please revert that change and keep it the same way it was before it’s really confusing

  • Don’t know why everytime you make updates to the party system you have to completely change how to do things. When I go to start a party it no longer shows the groups, it just starts a solo party. Why didn’t you just add the option but still show groups? And what is the sound that keeps happening when you try to scroll too far? Why can’t I turn it off?

  • Bring back custom background themes

  • Is there a fix for the controller Bluetooth issues?

  • Wallpapers and folders.

I want the wallpaper that I had on my ps4 on my ps5. And the gamelists just aren’t good enough. Folders are better. Please bring back folders.

  • Since you guys are adding emoji’s. Are we going to see GIF’s being introduced as well? Especially thru the Playstation App.

  • Can we get an update where games won’t crash or freeze?

Callisto Protocol always Errors for me, even after deleting and re downloading

And idk why but was online for fortnite and the playstaion totally froze, I couldn’t turn it off by button so I had to pull the plug (God forgive)

I Love my ps5 when I bought it, but as of lately there’s alot of errors and I got a fear everytime I play a game.it will error on me.

  • Thanks PS :)

  • Wait so how do the parties work now? Can I still start a party in a group with only one other person? And will people be able to see it or no?

    • I think it’s visible to all your friends on ps and you can’t really start an old party. Idk what they was thinking when they made these changes and I’d hope they change them back.

  • For media, videos, & movies on external hard drives, please add more controls like the PS3!
Please add a repeat video option & repeat all videos in folder option!
Please bring back the screen previews when fast forwarding & rewinding when searching for specific scenes for video & movies instead of the 10 sec fast forward & rewind! Also slow motion when paused! Also a better media/blu ray remote like the PS3! It would be very appreciated!

  • Hey PlayStation Team.

Would be great to bring back features that worked well on PS4:
    – Game Folders option on main screen (Games). Note: The gamelists are inconvenient and no usable.
    – Main Screen Wallpaper option. Let us customize the screen with wallpapers or themes.

Some new features which would be great to have:
    – Updates for the games, manually update the games with an update note on what was change before update and if we don’t agree to update to continue playing the games (I am referring to Single Player games) w/o the update. Since an update can introduce another bug or issue. Otherwise if we agree with update we install it.
Just add a toggle on system level in Settings.

    Thank you.

  • Could the ps5 blu-ray player possibly play 3D blu-ray
    discs at some point?

  • Could the ps5 blu-ray player possibly play 3D blu-ray discs at some point?

  • Add read receipt in messages please !

  • Hearing aid compatibility like apple iOS would be good for us older players thank you

  • I miss being able to have custom themes. It would be great….

  • Please bring back the ability to copy saves to a USB stick like you could on the PS4. 🧎🏽‍♀️I request on bended knee.

  • I appreciate the time and effort it takes to make these improvements. When my controller software updated with the most recent changes, the accent lights flash a few times during connection then go out. I switched to my backup controller and it is doing the same thing. I tried to see if it was something in the system settings but it was not. Is there another way to resolve this? It would be another great feature to have if we could turn it on or off by choice or preference. I used to always think that would have been great for the PS4.

  • I have updated my PS5 and carefully thought a lot about the start screen and specifically ease access to users Game Library.

Here are some minor wishes for future improvements:

    1. Start Screen: Move the Game Library icon on start screen from farmost right, to right next to PS Store. Or, even better, let users move all the icons on start screen freely.

    2. Start Screen top categories: Let users customise the quick links to Games and Media with L1 and R1 so that users can switch Media with Game Library. Or, even better, add Game Library as another main category/quick link placed between Games and Media.

  • Please revert back the old party chat this new way of you having to always create a new one is literal ass. Please stop snorting coke at the Sony HQ and revert the party changes🙏

  • Why can’t you guys give us communities back? It was the easiest way to find folks to jump into a game with or find help. Why is it so hard to bring back something we already had?

  • Why did my party’s name get censored ?

  • After this update, Gran Turismo 7 crashed while I was playing for more than an hour. Two error reports were sent to Sony so hopefully they fix the issue.

  • Here’s the problem. I asked specifically to be able to use the ds controller on my android and the button mapping is still wonky. When does it become more cost effective to just listen and do what is asked of your multi billion dollar corporation. Oh yeah that’s right. We pay for everything and you decide how the money is spent. Love the way WE get treated like mushrooms. Thanks QEYNOS.

  • Since the update rolled out only one of my 10 disk games are working on the PS5 I keep getting an unrecognized disk error Ive tried different Call of Duty games aswell as some Playstation exclusives. The only game that does work is Diablo 4. Can someone reach out to the email associated with my user?

  • Other than muting the beep sound these are features I hardly care about. At this point, I simply want to be able to filter (by price) my wishlist in the phone app.

  • Yay controller updates, but no way to turn it on remotely and have it make noise if it’s misplaced… priorities I guess…………

  • Since the update after 9:23 both of my controllers are reacting weird and my headset goes in and out didn’t have any of these problems before they update. Is there a way to address this. Or anyone else have these problems. Thank you for your time

  • Sony, please… for the love of god hide the “Remote Play connected”. Three years in no real fix from you the team and now you have a dedicated hardware coming just for remote play. This needs to be addressed !

  • Could you please make an option to turn off “Gameplay recording paused” notification on the PS5?
I don’t record any gameplay so the notification is nothing but an annoyance.

  • Hello I’ve made my way here to try to figure out how to fix a problem I’ve had since this update. Since the update my psn chats when I enter the game base have been small, instead of being full screen and having the players on the side they look like the chat was you just message somone by pressing the home button, is there anyway i can fix this?

  • Please add a way to remove the “remote play connected” message at the top of the screen. It gets in the way of critical UI information and is a general nuisance like ruining screenshots.
