PlayStation’s first Remote Play dedicated device, PlayStation Portal remote player, to launch starting Nov 15 at $199.99

Since launching PS5, we’ve been amazed to see how players around the world have embraced the generational leaps we made in the gaming experience, such as the heightened feeling of immersion delivered by the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers in the DualSense wireless controller. Our PlayStation community continues to give us a reason to challenge ourselves to bring new innovations to the market for all players to enjoy. That’s why today, we are especially pleased to share new updates about our upcoming hardware products.

In May, we gave a quick peek at our dedicated PS5 remote play device – now called PlayStation Portal remote player, and our first wireless earbuds, called Pulse Explore. Today we’re pleased to share more details about these products and reveal a new PlayStation over-the-ear wireless headset, Pulse Elite. Both Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore deliver low latency lossless audio from PS5 and PlayStation Portal using our new PlayStation Link wireless technology.

Here are the details.

PlayStation Portal remote player

PlayStation Portal remote player brings the PS5 experience to the palm of your hand. It includes the key features of the DualSense wireless controller, including adaptive triggers and haptic feedback*. The vibrant 8-inch LCD screen is capable of 1080p resolution at 60fps, providing a high definition visual experience that’s expected from the high quality games created by world-class developers.

PlayStation Portal is the perfect device for gamers in households where they might need to share their living room TV or simply want to play PS5 games in another room of the house. PlayStation Portal will connect remotely to your PS5 over Wi-Fi**, so you’ll be able to swiftly jump from playing on your PS5 to your PlayStation Portal. PlayStation Portal can play supported games that are installed on your PS5 console and use the Dualsense controller. It also includes a 3.5mm audio jack for wired audio. PS VR2 games, which require the headset, and games that are streamed through PlayStation Plus Premium’s cloud streaming, are not supported.***

PlayStation Portal remote player will launch later this year for 199.99 USD | 219.99 EURO | 199.99 GBP | 29,980 YEN. We’ll have more details soon on when pre-orders begin for PlayStation Portal.

Pulse Elite wireless headset & Pulse Explore wireless earbuds

Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore are the latest PlayStation wireless headset and earbuds, bringing next level audio performance to the gaming experience.

  • Pulse Elite is our new wireless headset that offers lossless audio and includes a retractable boom mic with AI-enhanced noise rejection capable of filtering background sounds. A charging hanger is also included with the product for a convenient charging and storage option.
  • Pulse Explore is our first set of wireless earbuds, providing a premium portable audio experience that includes dual microphones with AI-enhanced noise rejection capable of filtering background sounds. It also offers lossless audio and comes with a charging case.

Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore will be the first PlayStation audio devices to use custom-designed  planar magnetic drivers for an audiophile-level listening experience normally found in premium headphones for professional sound engineers. With Pulse Explore, we’re pleased to be one of the first companies to provide wireless earbuds to the mass consumer market using planar magnetic driver technology.

Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore are part of our ongoing efforts to amplify the audio experience in gaming and make the gameplay experience more immersive through enhanced sound. Pulse Elite will be available for 149.99 USD | 149.99 EURO | 129.99 GBP | 18,980 YEN and Pulse Explore will be available for 199.99 USD | 219.99 EURO | 199.99 GBP | 29,980 YEN. We’ll have more details to share soon, including when pre-orders begin and launch dates.

PlayStation Link, PlayStation’s new wireless audio technology

Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore connect directly with PlayStation Portal by leveraging this new wireless audio technology, PlayStation Link. This innovation delivers low latency, lossless audio and easy switching between multiple PlayStation Link hosts such as PS5 with the USB adapter and PlayStation Portal.

When using Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore with PS5, the USB adapter that’s included with each headset and earbuds is required for PlayStation Link. The PlayStation Link USB adapter will also be sold separately as a standalone item, and can be used on PC and Mac, so players can connect Pulse Elite or Pulse Explore to experience the same lossless and low latency audio.

Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore can simultaneously connect to a PlayStation Link supported device (PS5, PC, Mac, or PlayStation Portal) and a Bluetooth supported device. For example, Pulse Explore can be connected to PS5 (via the USB adapter) using PlayStation Link and also to a mobile phone through Bluetooth at the same time. While playing on PS5, gamers can instantly answer a call and hear it through the same Pulse Explore earbuds.

We can’t wait to launch our new line of products for PS5, so players can play longer and  experience its heightened immersiveness. We want to thank all our fans for being part of the PlayStation family and for embracing PS5, and we look forward to continuing to come up with new ways to enhance the player experience.

*Haptic feedback and adaptive trigger features are only available when those features are supported by the game being played.

**Requires broadband internet Wi-Fi with at least 5Mbps for use. For a better play experience, a high-speed connection of at least 15Mbps is recommended.

***Games that require a VR headset (PlayStation VR or PlayStation VR2) or additional peripherals (other than a DUALSHOCK 4, DualSense, or DualSense Edge wireless controller) are not compatible. Games that must be streamed on PS5 using a PS Plus Premium membership are not compatible.

  • While I don’t have a use for it personally, the Portal seems like a nice device. But if it doesn’t support the upcoming PS Plus cloud streaming directly, that would be a huge fail by Sony.

Might eventually pick up the Pulse Elite since my Platinum headset is beginning to show its age.

With PlayStation Link being built in to the Portal, I hope this means future PS5 models will have the tech included as well, so that the USB adapter is no longer needed.

It’s interesting that the USB adapter is being sold separately. Why would anyone need to purchase one when it’s included with the headset/earbuds? Does this mean it could be used to connect Dualsense to PC? That would be great to finally have that option.

    • Dualsense can already connect to a PC.
The reason for selling the usb adapter as a stand-alone item is so you can buy multiples and have it on your pc, iMac, MacBook etc as the headsets/buds can have multiple profiles. So no need to pair each and every tine.

  • If it’s only the glorified remote play device, this is a bad joke, shouldn’t exist and I and I’m sure 99% of players won’t want it!

And if it’s $200, it’ll surely be a least €200, nearly as much as a Vita which is a proper (much too poorly supported) console!

IF it was a new PSP or Vita, however, I’d be first in the queue! 😯😂🩲😀🤘🤞

  • The minimum they could’ve done was to add cloud streaming with ps plus… This will likely not sell that much since it only does remote play.

  • Not interested in the slightest in the handheld streamer. I was interested in the earbuds but not for $200. Razor has some PlayStation licensed buds for $150 which I think is still too much for me. Oh well, Guess I’ll keep waiting.

  • It’s gonna depend on the latency. I would only consider buying a PSPortal if there’s practically zero latency. Otherwise, I’d rather just buy a second PS5 to use in another room.

  • I use my IPad. This whole device seems pointless to me…

  • Having support for Playstation cloud streamed games would have gone a LONG way to making this more widely useful. Even a premium model for $50 more with cloud streaming support would have been great.

  • I’m just gonna say it. Streaming games will never be a thing. No serious gamer will play a streamed version of Elden Ring. Enough already.

    • I think you’d be surprised at how well it works. I’ve been playing more and more games via Xbox Cloud so that I don’t need to be installing ~100 gb games all the time, particularly on devices like the Steam Deck and ROG Ally. I was also very surprised at how well PS Remote Play worked over my home network. For single player games, remote play/streaming is at a place where you have a hard time realizing you aren’t playing it locally on the hardware.

Lastly I tried Steam’s remote play streaming Elden Ring from my PC to my Steam Deck. It was super smooth and I thought the response time was better than playing it locally on the Steam Deck. I had better timing on rolls etc.

    • @feisty_
Then you’ve had better luck than me. I’ve streamed games on PS Plus, Xbox Cloud, and Nintendo Switch. Despite having a fiber connection, the lag made the games unplayable.

    • Never say never

  • Amazing

  • This is DOA. It’s not what people wanted (which was a way to play their library on dedicated Vita like console).

  • Just give us an actual handheld we can use without being tethered to internet

  • I’m sorry Sony, $199.99? That’s an L.

  • Let’s be honest.
This device is perfect for Sony.
If they make another PSP or Vita sooner or later, it would be hack, and piracy was the beginning of the end of those consoles. With this new hardware, they assure that ever buyer has a PS5, and that is a point for developers who can obtain benefits for their work, make games.
Once all this said I am gonna buy one.
I am very interested. I have a 4K LG OLED 55″ and sometimes I prefer to play in other places of the house.
I use my PS Vita and an iPad with Remote Play and I can say none of then satisfied my exigencies and I think if this device connects quickly, have no lag and with the Haptics it will be good for me.
With Oled screen, 1440p and a redefine design it would be 10 over 10 but, the price (unless for me)compensates that. I prefer 199$ 1080 LCD than 299$ 1440 Oled.

Sony won’t make another handheld because of piracy. This device is the best we can get.
    Let’s be greatful.

  • Definitely excited to check the pulse elites out the design for the ear cup on the 3d just did not work for my ears which I was sad about because I enjoyed this sound these ear cups look to be a little different which I’m hoping for can’t wait to check these out.

  • Seriously, what is wrong with Sony? If I need to play in another room of the house I can just buy a 40 inch 4k tv for 200 bucks and put it in that room. Or better yet, 4 x 20′ HDTVs (1080p just like the portal) at 50 bucks each and then I can just play in every room of the house.

  • I can’t wait to preorder! I’ve been wanting a Playstation Portal like device since I picked up my PS5. Currently solutions for remote play are just not “it”. A dualsense controller with a built in screen is perfect! Very interested in the new audio gear too.

And I COMPLETELY agree with the decision to not release a PSP/PS Vita like device. That either forces Playstation to develop bespoke games for this device, which is a huge effort and takes away from PS5 games, or would require even more development time for PS5 games to also work on a handheld.

  • I just wish they would have partnered with Nintendo and brought Remote Play to the Switch.

  • Sorry, I won’t be buying this. Very disappointed. I’m looking for something that my daughter can take with her to play her games at another house, she doesn’t need to play games in a separate room! Total waste of money for me.

  • That’s the PlayStation Portal? You know that the Steam Deck lets you use remote play on any gaming controller. You could link it to your PC or your TV. And for around $200 less? Sorry, but hardcore gamers like myself just love Steam Deck. I just hope that Portal thing will be another failure of the PS graveyard of failures: PlayStation TV, Home.

  • kinda lame, just give us a playstation steamdeck lol

  • For this to shine this really needs the cloud games to be able to work. If the cloud was a standalone app next to remote play( meaning I don’t need my PS5 on/rest mode) that would be awesome.

  • Was hoping for a streaming device or at least have the capability to access ps plus premium. This is such a niche of niche market, console to handheld to streaming to remote play only. Man, this feels like the gamecube where you needed the GBAs to play multiplayer for some games.

  • I’d pay 300 for a version that lets me play my vita and psp library but this Looks good .

  • I do have the Backbone PlayStation for Android but I could use a bigger screen. tempting. I defiantly want to check out the Explore earbuds. I bought the $299 Audeze Penrose for my PlayStation so I don’t need the Elite but I do want to try them to see how they sound, probably a great recommendation for half the price of the Penrose.

  • $200 for basically a Wii U game pad. Sorry to say that this will most likely be a huge flop because most will not bother with something like this. I’m a huge PlayStation fan and I just don’t see the point of this with all the other options that are already out there. You need to step up and make another true handheld gaming device!

  • If it had cost a bit more and let me stream games I would’ve picked it up. Being an accessory for a ps5 is rubbish. Good price point for what it is, no rush to get one though.

  • Do it have to be on the same WiFi as the ps5 in order to use it?

  • Let us play our entire digital playstation library on ps4 and ps5.

Looking forward to the playstation porral. Day 1 buy 4 me

  • Hope it does not have drift, this looks cool and i would love this device!

  • I’m the target market for this and it would be fantastic to have it for traveling and being able to use my ps5 outside of a local network. Even if I have to tether I don’t care as much.

I do have a major concern about the sticks though. I play so much I need a new controller every year because the stick drift kicks in or one of the triggers eventually breaks. It doesn’t look like there’s an easy way to replace the sticks on the handheld, and it’s up to 4x more expensive than replacing a controller every year depending if I get the controllers on sale.

  • It’s sort of like a single-function tablet. The price fits the hardware, but it’s a very specific thing to spend $200 on. I’ll just be glad I have a Steam Deck to run remote play on.

  • Looking great. But feels weird to require internet connection to use Remote Play in PS Portal, when I’d say it would be more optimal to stream directly from PS5 to PS Portal with no internet connection or router required. Or well, at least it would be great to have the option.

In addition to this, also feels weird to see that a streaming device doesn’t support the cloud gaming content. I was expecting the opposite: to use the PS+ cloud gaming streamed directly from the PS+ servers to PS Portal, and also without requiring to use a PS5.

Everything else sounds fine. I’d have prefered an OLED screen like the Vita one for PS Portal, but I understand that it was more important to keep the price that low and that an OLED screen would have increased the price too much.

  • I love all your stuff and want all of his, where do I sign up to preorder or even purchase right now? I’ll give you all my credit card numbers right now if you want, as long as I can get all of it. I have all the consoles and both VR’s sets, headphones and controllers, but they are lonely without all these items you just presented. Do I come off as desperate and most likely codependent on your products, with a dash of compulsiveness that probably is unhealthy or financially irresponsible? Have I just skimmed all the articles, most likely overlooking any information regarding preordering or purchasing these products and rushed to leave a comment in order to get attention or answers without doing the work? Yes, to both, and I am owning these faults in public right now, which I consider brave and heroic. And what does Sony need to do in reaction to this act of bravery? Well, may I suggest a small gesture of providing me with some information on how to pre order these products so I can work on my shortcomings while using those gorgeous products you just announced. I will go ahead and assume you have accepted my suggestion and thank you in advance for the information.

  • This looks horrible

  • Why don’t you launch a portable PS that allow you to continue your PS games while your out of home?
The saved games are in a cloud, it only needed that the game be installed in your PS portable to continue the same game when you are on vacations or in a trip.
Having a PS portable to play at home while the PS5 is On, for me don’t make any sense and got a few % of people that will buy it.

  • With how long the battery last on the normal controller, don’t see this how portal makes much sense. Waste of money and ps5 engineers time.

  • With how long the battery last on the normal controller, dont see this how portal makes much sense. Waste of money and ps5 engineers time.

  • Question: Can the Portal be used as a controller while I play on my TV? It would be amazing to occasionally use this as a controller, perhaps with information (stats, party control, menu settings, etc.), while gaming on the TV.

  • As someone who doesn’t have room for a second TV, this is going to be perfect for me and my husband. He likes playing games with his Steam Link on the TV and this will allow me to play next to him or in another room. Not to mention I’ll be able to do all my walking without having to go without playing since I won’t have to stay stationary.

  • Why does the PS Portal not have PS+ Cloud Streaming available (without PS5)? Such a missed opportunity.

  • Wait, where’s the bluetooth? How come you announcing the “Portal” without bluetooth?

  • I think Sony knows this is going to be a niche product. They see the Switch and the Deck and the Ally and know this is not going to be a 100% portable device. It’s also limited in functionality. It connects to a PS5 ONLY via WiFi, and can ONLY stream games directly installed on the system. By designing a streaming handheld around these tight constraints, they can make a high functioning device for a niche use case. The value of this for you depends on how well you fit that niche.

For myself who already owns a Deck that has PS streaming functionality with 3rd party tools, this is not for me. This will probably be the exact same case for Ally owners that can set up PS streaming even easier than the Deck can.

Also, why no Bluetooth? This means the original Pulse headphones WILL NOT WORK with the PS Portal! Additionally, this means if you want a full wireless audio experience, you will need to invest more into proprietary PS products. It’s a very Apple way of keeping people locked in a closed ecosystem. Keep in mind that no Bluetooth also means that if those grips start to get stick drift or buttons become unresponsive, you cannot connect a different controller (even a PS DualSense controller) to properly use the device. Unlike the Deck that allows users to repair the device, I don’t see how users will be able to fix this thing if something goes wrong.

I’m sceptical of this device. I think we all would’ve liked something more akin to a Switch or Deck. Maybe next earnings call.

  • This looks amazing, I can’t wait to get one.
My only reservation is the analogue sticks do not look like the user replaceable version used in the DS Edge, and I am currently on my 5th dual sense controller as a result of a drifting left stick.

  • lol, a streaming only device, that can’t play streaming only games. great job sony. truly remarkable

  • so let me get this right. here we have a device that is limited to use in the house on the same wifi as the ps5 the same place the ps5 already is and the ps5 has top be on and set up to play the game to the remote device… um so what Is the point? you are gonna be literally playing the ps5 remotely in the same place the ps5 is already at so why not just play the ps5? I mean how may people are really gonna be like oh im so tired of sitting here playing my ps5 from the couch/bed/chair so let me instead pick up this device that is home bound so I can play the same exact thing on a smaller screen from the same spot. yall realize this thing does absolutely nothing but mirror the ps5 it dose nothing else it does not play any games on its own at all and its home bound you are not gonna take it on road trips or vacations or anywhere except gamestop or ebay once you realize the thing is useless. I might get one but ill wait a year and pick one up for 50 bucks or less at a yard sale.

  • wait, I got confuse…. I need an adapter to use the Elite or the Explorer with my PS5? Can’t they just connect directly over bluetooth?

  • I want to know my remote play has connection issue on all my devices. Will remote play app be improved or will it stay the same? This will determine is I get the PlayStation Portable.

  • I wanted a dedicated handheld, the vita had the best D-Pad ever.

Really disappointed in the direction Playstation has taken. Best of luck in the future, though!

  • Why buy the PlayStation Portal when you can use your phone? 😑

Heck, you can use a Fold phone to possibly get bigger picture and better picture as well.

The money for this should have been put into making a better device.
