First look: the headset design for PlayStation VR2

The inspiration behind the latest VR hardware design.

Today, I am especially pleased to reveal the stunning new design of our next generation VR headset, PlayStation VR2, together with an updated and final design image of our PlayStation VR2 Sense controller.

You’ll notice the PS VR2 headset has a similar shape as the PS VR2 Sense controller, taking on a matching “orb” look. The circular orb shape represents the 360-degree view that players feel when they enter the virtual reality world, so this shape captures it nicely.

The design of the PS VR2 headset was also inspired by the look of the PS5 family of products. When our design team created the PS5 console, they also had the next generation VR headset in mind so you’ll notice some similarities in the look and feel. The PS5 console has flat edges as it is meant to be displayed on a flat surface, while there was more emphasis on adding roundness to the design of PS VR2 headset since it is meant to have constant human contact, similar to the rounded edges of the DualSense controller and Pulse 3D headset.

Our goal is to create a headset that will not only become an attractive part of your living room decor, but will also keep you immersed in your game world, to the point where you almost forget you are using a headset or controller. That’s why we paid very close attention to the ergonomics of the headset and conducted extensive testing to ensure a comfortable feel for a variety of head sizes. We already had a lot of positive feedback on the ergonomics of the first PS VR headset by carefully balancing the headset weight and having a simple headband that can be adjustable, so we kept the same concept for the PS VR2 headset. Other features such as the headset’s adjustable scope that places the scope area closer or further away from the face and placement of the stereo headphone jack also remain the same, so players will be familiar with it.

For the PS VR2 headset, we took comfort a few steps further by adding new features such as a lens adjustment dial, so users have an additional option to match the lens distance between their eyes to optimize their view. We also created a slimmer design with a slight weight reduction – even with the new added features such as the new built-in motor for the headset feedback. It was quite a challenge to create a slimmer design with new features added to improve upon our first headset, but our design and engineering teams proved this could be possible when we saw the final design!

Additionally, we’ve integrated a new vent design for the PS VR2 headset that we think users will enjoy. Yujin Morisawa, Senior Art Director at SIE led the headset design of PS VR2 and explains why this is his absolute favorite part of the design:

“When I started to work on the design for the PlayStation VR2 headset, one of the areas I wanted to focus on first was the idea of creating a vent in the headset to let air out, similar to the vents on the PS5 console that allows airflow. Our engineers came up with this idea as a good way to allow ventilation and avoid having the lens fog up while players are immersed in their VR games. I worked on many design concepts to achieve this, and in the final design, you can see there is a little space in between the top and front surface of the scope that contains the integrated ventilation. I am really proud of how this turned out and the positive feedback I have gotten so far. I hope our PlayStation fans will also agree, and I can’t wait for them to try it out.”

Another treat we wanted to share – similar to the thousands of tiny PlayStation symbols we added to the design of the PS5 console and DualSense controller, we also included tiny PlayStation symbols to the front and back bands of the PS VR2 headset to add a comfortable feel for players to enjoy.

When PS VR2 launches, it’ll take a giant leap forward in the way we play games in virtual reality.  There are plenty of exciting new features to look forward to in the PS VR2 system, including stunning visual fidelity in 4K HDR and state-of-art graphical rendering, enhanced tracking such as inside-out camera tracking, new PlayStation VR2 Sense Technology features such as headset feedback, and the new, intuitive PS VR2 Sense controller that creates an incredibly deep feeling of immersion. Additionally, the PS VR2 system comes in a simple, single cord set up so you can connect to your games immediately. PS VR2 development kits are already in the hands of game creators, and we are excited for what they’ll come up with to truly make virtual reality a remarkable experience for gamers. We look forward to sharing more details with you about PS VR2. Stay tuned!

  • So no adjusting the lenses sideways? I hope they are at a good distance. Always felt that my face/eyes were just a tiny bit too wide and moving the headset just a tiny bit to the right felt like it made right eye in focus but left eye blurry – and vice versa.

But yeah sounds fantastic. Especially one cord setup, 4K and new controllers!

  • It looks amazing!!! I can’t wait for the release.

  • Will this be compatible with Gran Turismo 7?

  • Still no VRR for PS5 yet I see.

  • I love everything about this, except the cord. My oculus is cordless, and I was hoping the psvr2 would follow suit. It’s gonna be hard to go back to being tethered, but it’s a sacrifice I’ll make of the visuals are going to be as striking as it seems, plus I’m sure the entry point will be about $500-600. At least that’s the max I would pay, and hopefully there’s some trade-in deals. Although, scalpers I’m sure are already prepping their bots. Such a selfish time we live in.

  • Looks Amazing!

  • Cool , make it so hard to order it will be Obsolete by the time I get one.

  • make it so hard to order it will be Obsolete by the time I get one.cool

  • Calling it right now 499$ USD.

  • I wanted the original,y now 14 year old son saw it, when he realized what it was, he was hooked, INSTANTLY. We bought it for his 14th B-day. At the time, I had just gone through a spinal fusion, so I unfortunately, didn’t have the strength in my neck and shoulders to support the weight of the VR headset.
Got my PS5 last January, so I ABSOLUTELY can’t wait for the PSVR2 to be launched!!

  • Now that they’ve implemented inside out tracking I really hope they’re working a boundary warning system similar to other VR headsets. I really enjoy that extra sense of knowing where you are in the room without taking the headset off.

  • Super psyched for this! hope it has back compat with psvr1

  • I would definitely like to get this. I do hope you can play psvr one games with this headset. All they upgrades sound nice. The controls with the joysticks would be my favorite upgrade.

  • I have a problem with the design. Where the cameras the located! Should have more considering if your hands are on the back left or back right IT’S GOING TO LOSE TRACKING

They should of put 2 more cameras on the left and right side of the headset . A game is not going to be able to track both left and right arm when doing certain movements like JUMPING JACKS! forget about behind head movement!

A game like Iron Man VR will not work, its a game that requires wrist tracking when flying as IRON MAN!
The design looks set, but i guess an easy fix is to allow the PS5 playstation camera to do additional tracking that the new headset could miss. Just a thought.

Tracking should be as 1 to 1 as possible

  • Will the new system come with the new ps5 camera? Is it needed or can the older ps4 2nd gen be used on this new vr system?

  • And I agree with the comment that it should be available to ps5 owners only with a limit. As with the ps5 console people bought them to sell them at ridiculous prices and hard to get one. It took me a long time to get my ps5 no stores ever had them as there was no limit on how many people could buy when they were available. I got mine on Facebook yard sale at a reasonable price Sealed brand new disk version for 600$ cash which wasn’t to bad as they are 499$plus tax. So out the door they are about 535$ after tax so I paid an extra 65$ to have one but that was the only time I seen it that low as I checked many sites daily for them. I was lucky. Some sites are over 1000$ which is ridiculous. I hope Sony addresses this issue with new vr system I would buy at the msrp I don’t want to pay double from someone that are making a profit
I am a long time PlayStation customer from the first PlayStation to the ps5. I deserve a chance to order at the set price from Sony

  • I’m hoping the inner head band will be better materials than the first gen because mine has deteriorated quite early on and it comes away in small peices and you can not replace it so they should use a leather as a suggestion but other than that I’m looking forward to seeing this and hoping they can do away with the motion sickness which I heard once on I’m sure this vr will deliver and be great fun

  • Does anyone know if the VR 2 will bring a life size personal cinema screen with chairs cause that would be amazing and add versatility you could watch all your 3d blu rays and normal blu rays I think sony would miss out if they don’t use this feature

  • Love the design and the idea about the vents

  • Can’t wait!!!

  • PSVR2 will be a day one purchase here :))

  • Sources that correctly leaked insider information which has been proven 100% accurate now indicate that this headset is launching in Quarter 1, 2023.

    Quarter 1, 2023. Seriously?

The people who will buy this in it’s first availability/year are enthusiasts. They have already secured PS5s in spite of shortages.

The PS VR2 is getting older my the minute as it should have been out a while ago – No diopter, no Micro-OLED displays (which is why it’s still HUGE), no significant weight reduction.

Not to mention THE WIRE. Which even if you’re like me and don’t mind – it is BAD PR all round.

Is Sony Interactive Entertainment happy for Meta to take an even greater market share this holiday period with it’s new/existing Quest(s)/Cambria headsets?

Also, stop confining significant PS VR news pieces to the remit of PS blog posts only – it’s insulting to fans and doesn’t leverage the best marketing tools available and used by SIE in other domains.

And you wonder why the platform hasn’t been more successful yet…

  • I appeal to the leaders of PlayStation

On February 24, the Russian federation attacked Ukraine.
Civilian are suffering. Army of Russian federation destroys civilian objects, kills civilians.

The propaganda of the aggressor state turned out to be so strong that ordinary people in Russia still do not believe or refuse to believe what is happening.

Those Russians who are currently playing must feel the changes caused by direct aggression against Ukraine.

Therefore, I urge you to limit the access of Russian players to all online PlayStation services during the war against Ukraine

    • That not the peoples fault thought, that is their president’s fault, that’s just rude to take access away from Russian refugees.

  • I hope Sony puts some kind of control in place for pre-orders, like requiring an active PS+ membership and one per account/household.

  • Dope!

  • Can I be one that tests it as a consumer?!?!
Please. Maybe only way I ever get use one

  • I hope they made the padding replaceable. The one on my PSVR is falling apart and there’s no way to reverse the degradation of the rubber — due to sweat and facial oils. You literally MUST be wiping this thing down from day one, else the rubber will degrade.

  • I’m getting this when it comes out.the look is breathtaking and I can only imagine the feel of the headset and the controllers. I can wait!

  • I hope the cable on PSVR2 is removable, it’ll suck when it breaks, a matter of time

  • This is a beautiful headset and it does stands out as a console VR set, but there is a problem, it is wired. A wireless PSVR has been a dream sense the original was released. But other then that it’s great.

  • Здравствуйте хочу узнать будет подерживать пс4 виар 2

  • Alright I like it. Picasso!
    Day one purchase for me!

  • Would you still be able to use the psvr on ps when the psvr 2 comes out.

  • so disappointed they didn’t publish the release date yet…i think i am gonna go for oculus quest 2…they may release it in 2024 due to pandemic i won’t sit and wait in “**black midnight”..if you know the realese date you can wait if you don’t know you can’t wait…

    **(proverb in Greece)

  • Wanted day 1: i can wait to get my hands on it. Is there a waitlist i can sign up?

  • Can’t wait! Hoping to nab one at launch. Been saving money and Sony rewards points to help!
