First look: the headset design for PlayStation VR2

The inspiration behind the latest VR hardware design.

Today, I am especially pleased to reveal the stunning new design of our next generation VR headset, PlayStation VR2, together with an updated and final design image of our PlayStation VR2 Sense controller.

Youā€™ll notice the PS VR2 headset has a similar shape as the PS VR2 Sense controller, taking on a matching ā€œorbā€ look. The circular orb shape represents the 360-degree view that players feel when they enter the virtual reality world, so this shape captures it nicely.

The design of the PS VR2 headset was also inspired by the look of the PS5 family of products. When our design team created the PS5 console, they also had the next generation VR headset in mind so youā€™ll notice some similarities in the look and feel. The PS5 console has flat edges as it is meant to be displayed on a flat surface, while there was more emphasis on adding roundness to the design of PS VR2 headset since it is meant to have constant human contact, similar to the rounded edges of the DualSense controller and Pulse 3D headset.

Our goal is to create a headset that will not only become an attractive part of your living room decor, but will also keep you immersed in your game world, to the point where you almost forget you are using a headset or controller. Thatā€™s why we paid very close attention to the ergonomics of the headset and conducted extensive testing to ensure a comfortable feel for a variety of head sizes. We already had a lot of positive feedback on the ergonomics of the first PS VR headset by carefully balancing the headset weight and having a simple headband that can be adjustable, so we kept the same concept for the PS VR2 headset. Other features such as the headsetā€™s adjustable scope that places the scope area closer or further away from the face and placement of the stereo headphone jack also remain the same, so players will be familiar with it.

For the PS VR2 headset, we took comfort a few steps further by adding new features such as a lens adjustment dial, so users have an additional option to match the lens distance between their eyes to optimize their view. We also created a slimmer design with a slight weight reduction – even with the new added features such as the new built-in motor for the headset feedback. It was quite a challenge to create a slimmer design with new features added to improve upon our first headset, but our design and engineering teams proved this could be possible when we saw the final design!

Additionally, weā€™ve integrated a new vent design for the PS VR2 headset that we think users will enjoy. Yujin Morisawa, Senior Art Director at SIE led the headset design of PS VR2 and explains why this is his absolute favorite part of the design:

ā€œWhen I started to work on the design for the PlayStation VR2 headset, one of the areas I wanted to focus on first was the idea of creating a vent in the headset to let air out, similar to the vents on the PS5 console that allows airflow. Our engineers came up with this idea as a good way to allow ventilation and avoid having the lens fog up while players are immersed in their VR games. I worked on many design concepts to achieve this, and in the final design, you can see there is a little space in between the top and front surface of the scope that contains the integrated ventilation. I am really proud of how this turned out and the positive feedback I have gotten so far. I hope our PlayStation fans will also agree, and I canā€™t wait for them to try it out.ā€

Yujin Morisawa, Senior Art Director, SIE

Another treat we wanted to share – similar to the thousands of tiny PlayStation symbols we added to the design of the PS5 console and DualSense controller, we also included tiny PlayStation symbols to the front and back bands of the PS VR2 headset to add a comfortable feel for players to enjoy.

When PS VR2 launches, itā€™ll take a giant leap forward in the way we play games in virtual reality.  There are plenty of exciting new features to look forward to in the PS VR2 system, including stunning visual fidelity in 4K HDR and state-of-art graphical rendering, enhanced tracking such as inside-out camera tracking, new PlayStation VR2 Sense Technology features such as headset feedback, and the new, intuitive PS VR2 Sense controller that creates an incredibly deep feeling of immersion. Additionally, the PS VR2 system comes in a simple, single cord set up so you can connect to your games immediately. PS VR2 development kits are already in the hands of game creators, and we are excited for what theyā€™ll come up with to truly make virtual reality a remarkable experience for gamers. We look forward to sharing more details with you about PS VR2. Stay tuned!

  • looks gorgeous i cant wait to get my hands in one, and common SONY please bring a new gen handheld playstation that can run ps4/ps5 games, no matter the price people wants a powerful machine that can run everything!

  • Sorry last thing can you make it steam VR compatible?!?

  • Man, this looks so cool!!! I wish I had a PS5 :(

  • Ready to preorderā€¦maybe March like the original? 03/29/16

  • Shut up and take my money!

  • When will the PS VR2 launch?

  • Awesome Sony, love it

  • I’m hyped for PSVR2 but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE design this headset so that the lenses can be replaced if needed. my PSVR headset has all kinds of scratches on the lenses. I doubt this will happen but I hope it does

  • Looks pretty good.

  • i did not get a chance to own the first one but I tried it once, how Would someone with Glasses feel wearing it? I feel this should be considered since i think 64% of people wear them and as do I i would love to know.

  • As a person with only one eye, I know it’s unrealistic to expect a single eye w/ lower cost version, but please at least make it possible to be able to enable eyesight tracking with left/right eye only. Apple face ID has the same issue. You can disable eye tracking for good, but can’t enable it for only one eye, which makes it very painful for me to use, or I just disable it and anyone can use my face to unlock my phone while I’m sleeping.

Being a one-eye person is the worst. You lost a lot of things in your life, and you can’t part in the special parking zone. I’d rather trade one eye with one leg.

  • It looks great! I do have to wonder, though, if it will be backwards compatible with games on the first PS VR. It would be extremely beneficial if it did have backwards compatibility, but looking at the controllers makes me wonder. I sure hope it does feature backwards compatibility, but otherwise it looks really nice and I hope to try it in the future!

  • I Am Ready For PSVR2

  • Wow amazing! It is really looking good but why donā€™t you change it black so it doesnā€™t get dirty easily.

  • Is no one questioning the fact that other VR headsets are able to function without a cable and this has one?

I assume it is to ensure extended gameplay and delivery necessary power to provide 4K but still would have preferred no cable.

  • Hi! I’m new here, and ironically don’t have a PlayStation (yet), but I’m interested in what Sony has been developing here, so expect to see me comment occasionally.

Just a quick question on this VR headset: Will it work with Steam? I’ve been considering getting a Steam VR kit for some time, and I have heard that the previous PSVR headset would work.

  • Just worried for that cable. On the previous model, some people torn the cables and since they couldn’t be detached, there was no repair. They had to buy a new headset.
I believe with the freedom the new version will bring, this could happen more frequently. It’d be nice if that was a detachable cord.

  • !!! PLEASE TAKE MY MONEY !!!

  • I Wonder how many upcoming first person horror will be censored on Playstation VR2?

I wanted to play Martha Is Dead. However many scenes had to be censored due to Sony being triggered and giving into the Pandering Woke. Absolutely Pathetic I say.

    Stop censoring Games Sony

  • Waiting for pre-order :-)

However, why did I sign-up to get PSVR2 updates (bottom of that PSVR2 page) when this major news was not sent to my email address?

Luckily my Google knows everything about me and suggested this to me :-)

  • pls add good games the old psvr didnt have any..except for blood and truth, that game is badass

  • Christmas 2022 confirmed? Psvr2 Launch title Wishlist.
    Fallout4 vr
    Bioshock collection vr
    Deathloop vr
Ported Resident Evil 4 vr with all content
    Deadspace vr
    Resident evil 8 vr
Take your pick and make it happen sony we need games to make the psvr2 launch a success.

  • Looks cool. My only concern is if theyā€™ve improved motion sickness. This is the one thing that keeps me from using my current psvr. The sickness lingers well after the headset is removed.

    • It would be nice if it turned regular 2D games into stereoscopic automatically for 3D gaming like NVidiaā€™s 3dvision.

  • Please let there be the choice between the hand controllers or DualSense controller.

  • Is it wireless?

  • Awesome, I love the design of the headset, looks really comfortable.

I wonder if the headset will come with the sense controllers.
Expecting a similar price to the PS5, at least the digital model, but I wouldn’t be shocked if it comes in at Ā£449.99 like the disc model.

  • Adding a scent card to the venting system would be the cherry on top, looks a lot less bulky and easier to set up then the first, a fake head and top of shoulders (store mannequin) display stand for storage and display could be a winner as an extra purchase, Iā€™ll wait and keep enjoying/exploring the ps5 for now, but it looks like another win for the ā€œgamersā€

  • This is a great step in the right direction – however, it amounts to very little if tripple-A quality games are kept for non-VR/’flat’ gaming on PS5.

This headset must be supported with tripple-A games from launch day and throughout its life-cycle, otherwise I will not be buying a next-gen VR headset from SIE.

I already have a PS VR1 headset, and this new iteration needs to deliver better in the gaming software department, as opposed to only having a few excellent tripple-A titles like the PS VR1.

  • Just a plea that you remember large people. I can only wear XL gloves in some brands, so those circle-enclosed controllers make me anxious. My head has fit in VR goggles to date, so I’m less worried about that.

  • Iā€™m gona get this probably as I gif the last one but what worries me is the last one you got hot and the lenses got cloudy because of the rubber eye seal , I donā€™t think it should be rubber but sone type of foam or something else , it really ruined it fir me as I kept of having to wipe , Iā€™ve heard many others say the same and now they have done the same design agsin ??

  • Very cool! I don’t agree however that the PS5 looks good. It’s one of the ugliest consoles ever made but at least it gets the job done. The PSVR2 however I’m concerned about that cable. Is it easily replaceable because if not, it will become an expensive ordeal and make the headset useless if it starts messing up.

  • To be honest i wasnt a big fan of the original playsation vr and the oculus was a better choice for a couple reasons (and yes i understand the oculus is newer than the ps vr) but a few big things that would improve this one is not needing a ps camera it made the controllers very buggy another is not needing a cord attached to you so you can turn freely instead if have to click a button to rotate

  • Thick headband again sigh..
Say bye bye to using, watching PSVR2 while laid down on bed, damn really wish they made headband thin

  • I’m so incredibly excited about this new headset. Waiting as patiently as humanly possible for its price, release date, availability and most of all, games, beautiful, fully optimized games. Please have mercy on our wallets lol. Can’t wait…

  • Cześć,a od kiedy będzie można kupić cały ten zestaw jest już jakaś data?Jestem trochę nie w temacie na ten temat /nowy/.A jest już gra DEAD
    SPACE na ps5?

  • I’m REALLY excited about this PSVR2! When I was deciding on a game console brand I went w Sony because of the VR. I’m glad they didn’t give up on it w the PS5! Eagerly awaiting the release date and hopefully it won’t be as difficult to obtain like my PS5 was! Lol

  • Aah now that looks good! Canā€™t wait to try it on! Is there any estimates release date?

  • definitely getting day one!!!

  • VR is already Niche (i.e PSVR2 headsets wont be nearly as hard to find or sell out as fast as the PS5 is), one of their whole advertising campaigns for the PS5 is how the PS5 and 4 have BC and are integrated with playing your ps4 game son PS5, with things like free upgrades from the Ps4 version to the PS5 version of games etc etc, yet with them refusing to answer the question of PSVR2 BC suggests that it wont have BC thus killling tha intergration. so I can play all my ps4 game son PS5 but if i wanna play PS4 VR games on my PS5 id need to keep TWO bulky headsets taking up space plus the PSVR breakout box and all the wires associated with it (and cameras). Like they talk about how PSVR2 is only one wire and doesnt need all that extra stuff (cause they listnened to complaints) but at the same time youre gonna have to keep that old model to play all the old stuff? That kinda defeats the purpose of clearing the clutter with the new headset if i still need the old one, thatll just be adding TO the clutter.

If the PSVR2 were gonna be BC why not announce that on day one to build hype? Didnt they tell us PS5 was BC with PS4 on day one of the PS5 reveal (correct me if im wrong)? (cause they knew that was a selling point) they didnt wait til the launch date announcement or some later showcase to give up that vital piece of information right? SO the fact that they wont tell us about PSVR2 BC means it wont have it (which is just gonna turn off most adopters who have psvr already.. I mean I doubt the PSVR2 is gonna have a killer library on day one to justify it… what AAA FULL games did we get at launch on PSVR1? How many total do we have now? like 5 and its already what 5 years old? Why would PSVR 2 be different?)

So if it turns out to NOT be BC I hope NO one buys it so they can learn they dropped the ball with lack of BC, just like how NO one bought an Xbox One, when MS announced how DRM, and playing used games would work, sure they backpedaled and course corrected on that and changed it before launch but by that time the damage had already been done and they shot themselves in the foot with the original reveal/announcement. Lets see if Sony is smarter if they dont want PSVR2 to be the next Vita

  • Really hope this works well with SteamVR when someone eventually makes a driver for it, not that my PC can handle most VR games anyways. Modding is a game-changer.

  • So when is it coming out canā€™t wait to try it šŸ˜ also how much will it be ?

  • Another product Sony will abandoned just like the first VR headset.

  • if it will be expensive, i will be sad, i just recently spent months of allowance to get the psvr headset, and a couple weeks later they are releacing a new and improved headset, i feel really bad about the original, and the lenses keep fogging up, but i cant fix it unless i get this new one

  • I’m ready but will it be for par and 5 or just the ps5

  • canā€™t wait to get this

  • More support for racing games please. I want to see this with Test Drive Solar Crown, WRC, Project CARS, Assetto Corsa, Gran Turismo 7 (IN MULTIPLAYER MODE, NOT JUST SOME BS IN-GAME VR DEMO), DiRT, GRiD, and if the physics are decent, even the new NFS.

  • Very exciting, I can’t wait to get my hands on this new kit. But I must say that I am very disappointed by the attached cable. I currently use a ceiling attached pulley system for the cable on my PSVR to avoid tripping on the cable. I see that the cable on the new headset is still pointing downwards, like on the current headset. It means that there is a kink in the cable when I attach it to my pulley system. Why couldn’t they have a cable that comes out horizontally, like on the Valve Index headset?

  • Lets hope Sony has made the lining of the headset cushions from a sturdier rubber like material than the ZVR1. Mine is disintegrating after being used a lot and its out of warranty. I have to pay 150 euro’s to have the cushion lening fixed??
I want this thing but makes me think about durability a bit….
