First look: the headset design for PlayStation VR2

The inspiration behind the latest VR hardware design.

Today, I am especially pleased to reveal the stunning new design of our next generation VR headset, PlayStation VR2, together with an updated and final design image of our PlayStation VR2 Sense controller.

You’ll notice the PS VR2 headset has a similar shape as the PS VR2 Sense controller, taking on a matching “orb” look. The circular orb shape represents the 360-degree view that players feel when they enter the virtual reality world, so this shape captures it nicely.

The design of the PS VR2 headset was also inspired by the look of the PS5 family of products. When our design team created the PS5 console, they also had the next generation VR headset in mind so you’ll notice some similarities in the look and feel. The PS5 console has flat edges as it is meant to be displayed on a flat surface, while there was more emphasis on adding roundness to the design of PS VR2 headset since it is meant to have constant human contact, similar to the rounded edges of the DualSense controller and Pulse 3D headset.

Our goal is to create a headset that will not only become an attractive part of your living room decor, but will also keep you immersed in your game world, to the point where you almost forget you are using a headset or controller. That’s why we paid very close attention to the ergonomics of the headset and conducted extensive testing to ensure a comfortable feel for a variety of head sizes. We already had a lot of positive feedback on the ergonomics of the first PS VR headset by carefully balancing the headset weight and having a simple headband that can be adjustable, so we kept the same concept for the PS VR2 headset. Other features such as the headset’s adjustable scope that places the scope area closer or further away from the face and placement of the stereo headphone jack also remain the same, so players will be familiar with it.

For the PS VR2 headset, we took comfort a few steps further by adding new features such as a lens adjustment dial, so users have an additional option to match the lens distance between their eyes to optimize their view. We also created a slimmer design with a slight weight reduction – even with the new added features such as the new built-in motor for the headset feedback. It was quite a challenge to create a slimmer design with new features added to improve upon our first headset, but our design and engineering teams proved this could be possible when we saw the final design!

Additionally, we’ve integrated a new vent design for the PS VR2 headset that we think users will enjoy. Yujin Morisawa, Senior Art Director at SIE led the headset design of PS VR2 and explains why this is his absolute favorite part of the design:

“When I started to work on the design for the PlayStation VR2 headset, one of the areas I wanted to focus on first was the idea of creating a vent in the headset to let air out, similar to the vents on the PS5 console that allows airflow. Our engineers came up with this idea as a good way to allow ventilation and avoid having the lens fog up while players are immersed in their VR games. I worked on many design concepts to achieve this, and in the final design, you can see there is a little space in between the top and front surface of the scope that contains the integrated ventilation. I am really proud of how this turned out and the positive feedback I have gotten so far. I hope our PlayStation fans will also agree, and I can’t wait for them to try it out.”

Yujin Morisawa, Senior Art Director, SIE

Another treat we wanted to share – similar to the thousands of tiny PlayStation symbols we added to the design of the PS5 console and DualSense controller, we also included tiny PlayStation symbols to the front and back bands of the PS VR2 headset to add a comfortable feel for players to enjoy.

When PS VR2 launches, it’ll take a giant leap forward in the way we play games in virtual reality.  There are plenty of exciting new features to look forward to in the PS VR2 system, including stunning visual fidelity in 4K HDR and state-of-art graphical rendering, enhanced tracking such as inside-out camera tracking, new PlayStation VR2 Sense Technology features such as headset feedback, and the new, intuitive PS VR2 Sense controller that creates an incredibly deep feeling of immersion. Additionally, the PS VR2 system comes in a simple, single cord set up so you can connect to your games immediately. PS VR2 development kits are already in the hands of game creators, and we are excited for what they’ll come up with to truly make virtual reality a remarkable experience for gamers. We look forward to sharing more details with you about PS VR2. Stay tuned!

  • Great design! I’m very excited about all the new features.. But – really wanted this one to be wireless. My friend has an oculus and it’s so nice not worrying about a cord. Why have they not getting rid of it?

  • Looks great! I’m very glad they stuck with the halo strap design of PSVR 1 for PSVR 2.

I’ve just got one HUGE complaint: It looks like the cable isn’t removable! WHY SONY?! I’ve talked to a lot of people who have had their PSVR 1 cable break (stepped on, chewed by pets, etc.), which required them to replace THE WHOLE HEADSET! Not only is this stupid, it’s incredibly wasteful! How hard would it be to have a replaceable cable?!

I’m fine with Sony’s decision of having a cable instead of wireless, but making it impossible to remove/replace the cable is RIDICULOUS! Really hoping this changes before launch. It’ll be very disappointing if it doesn’t. Seems very anti-consumer to me.

    • Look, we have brandished the term ‘anti consumer’ around these parts so often as to be blue in the face. However, this design oversight is indeed anti the consumer.

Sony, you can’t release this without a detachable cable. Not only is replacing it an issue, but just moving the helmet from place to place would also be easier with a removable cable.

Add some magnetic face plates while you’re at it to make it customisable.

  • I hope Sony is not serious with that cable attachment. Not only it looks permanently connected (exchanging it when it breaks is going to be PITA), but it also sticks out like a sore thumb. This will be pretty annoying whenever you turn your head, it will be pressing against your shoulder.

I still hope you will also make a wireless adapter. Cables in VR are pretty annoying, restrict distance between play space and console location, are prone to breaks tugging and breaks.

    • The cable doesn’t bother me so much, but it should absolutely be replaceable! I don’t know how many horror stories I’ve heard of people having to replace their PSVR 1’s because the cable broke. Such a waste.

  • I can’t wait for this. RE 7 VR convinced me this is the future of gaming. Moss, where is so believable that you’re in a library, Astro bot using spacial relativity to hide secret items. It’s just so much more immersive than regular gaming, i can’t wait to see what PSVR 2 brings.

  • Day one for me. Can’t wait!

  • How will corrective vision lenses be supported for the majority of you users that need them? The original PSVR had no simple way to add them. Other headsets allow for third parties to supply lenses that snap on. 75% of adults need some form of corrective vision lenses so this has to be considered when a VR headset is designed. Please speak about it. Let us know that the solution will be affordable, work well and wont require us to wear glasses or contact lenses.

  • I love the look of this headset, and I’m really glad they stuck with the halo strap design!

My one big complaint is that it looks like the cable won’t be removable! Why Sony?! I’ve talked to a bunch of people who had to replace their entire PSVR 1 headset because the cable broke (accidentally stepped on, chewed by pets, etc.). It seems ridiculous, wasteful, and anti-consumer to not have a removable cable on PSVR 2.

I really hope that this changes before launch. It would be very disappointing if it doesn’t.

    • Appologies for the double post. I thought my original post hadn’t shown up, but I guess it was just on a different page of comments.

    • Yeah, this is a huge issue imo. I’m fine with it using a cable but comeon, they fail. Let us replac them without huge expense or buy a new one alltogether.

  • So happy you added hardware IPD adjustment! This was the major drawback for PSVR1 for me, the lenses were just too close together and I never got a focused clear picture. I want to say this is going to be a day 1 purchase, but I have yet to find a PS5, and PSVR2 will probably be just as difficult to find.

  • I cannot wait I had so much fun when I got the first one at launch, also blood and truth sequel on this plzz fingers crossed.. I cannot wait buying day one!!!

  • So I’m sold already when is the purchase pre order date !!!

  • Kinda wishing this had a detachable USB-C cord, so in the future Sony could release a $100 external battery pack and WiFI6 dongle to convert it to wireless…

  • I’m hoping this will have generous IPD coverage like the Rift S has (up to 78mm). If PSVR2 doesn’t go up to 72mm I won’t be able to enjoy it properly and won’t buy it.

I really want to buy this thing though as I’ve been holding out for an easy to use, mainstream high quality vr headset and am desperate to finally start enjoying some VR gaming!

  • How much does it weigh?

  • To me Virtually Reality is when your immersed in that world, like you are in real life.

Can anyone tell me will this have noticeable black borders? Also its still to big and wired?

  • It looks better then the last one though.

  • When will Sony announce the price point?

  • Thank you Sony! I can not wait to have one.. :)

  • Definitely pre-ordering as soon as its available. Gran Turismo 7 full support please!

  • This looks 🔥

  • Why is this being revealed quietly on a blog post? Don’t you want people to buy this? Please stop sending out your good ideas to die.

    • It’s being revealed here because the product is already out there and they want to avoid leaks. They’ll do a bigger showcase with games later.

  • Looking forward to it. Do you remember 3d TV’s? I think all games on the PS5 should include a psvr version that lets you play on a big screen inside of PSVR2, but when you move your head, it acts like a real window frame into the game, and of course it would be in 3d. This would totally lure in gammers who are sensitive to motion sickness, and add value to their experience. Possibly even allowing the screen size to be changed so that players get their “VR legs”. I loved playing duck hunt and house of the dead with the gun that shot the CRT TV’s… This could be a more interactive version of that for some games. Thank you all at playstation for the experiences. Oh, and the original boot up screen on the PS1, that sound was burned into my head starting in 95 and I still love it…. One more thing, let everyone experience creating something, not just playing, in Dreams. Creative mode in that game is worth the psvr alone.

  • Great to see the single cord and the 4K resolution. One question I have is that this will take up one of the only 2 USB ports and so, making it impossible to use the camera, headset and a gaming wheel. I I’ll there be any options to upgrade to more USB slots?

  • I’ve had multiple psvr headsets do to my cable breaking etc. But I’m exited hope it goes great

  • Super excited about this!

I just don’t like that we’ll still have the same cable issues as with the original PSVR. It’s super anoying to have a cable dangle on your body and get tangled in it while playing.

  • Can i play psvr1 games on psvr2?

  • And a new handheld please

  • I love the new design it looks so futureistick

  • what are the chances for a wireless version? my current ps5 setup involves the ps5 behind the tv in a different room.

would be pretty sweet to keep it wireless

  • This will quite possibly be my first VR set. Stoked!

  • Looking forward to this.
Hoping it’s built without semi conductors lol

  • Real bummer sony didn’t make the USB-C cable removable. If that cable breaks your unit is dead.
I’d pay an extra $50 for fully removable cable.
    Sigh.

  • I hope y’all considered the disability people POV requirement’s too

  • This looks amazing and I am super excited. Day 1 build. However, it appears the cable can’t be detatched from the headset. This is a huge issue for me, as my PSVR1 Headset cable is fraying. We need to be able to swap out the cable without having to buy an all new headset!

  • But can I play my PSVR 1 games on it?

  • Looks gorgeous! Took me a year to get my hands on a PS5. Here’s hoping PSVR 2 will be easier to get. Will be trying from day 1!

  • Beam me up Scotty.
    I’m READY!!

  • Hope to se GT7 in VR. It Will be out of this World

  • Please please please POLYPHONY

  • Will the PSVR 2 play original PSVR game on the PlayStation 5?

  • This looks epic 😌👌

  • Does it support backwards compatibility with PS4 titles? This is really important to me, and I imagine a lot of the Playstation community but nothing’s been said around this.

  • I want this so bad

  • First of all, well done. This looks great as part of the PlayStation 5 family.

Secondly, a feature request. Can I use this headset to play normal, non 3D games in a ‘personal cinema’ style? If so, day one buy.

Third, could you use removable magnetic face covers for this headset so that customising it is as easy as on the PS5?

Fourth, can you please create a suspend mode on PS5 just for VR content? So that I could suspend a VR game, and go to a regular game while keeping the other one suspended?

Fifth, can you implement a quick resume feature on the PS5?

Sixth, buying a PS4 disc when there is a PS5 version available can grant you access to both versions (even if there is an upgrade path). So could you make it possible to insert a PS5 disc into a ps4 console to act as a key for unlocking the PS4 version of the game if that exists?

    Seventh, thank you once more.

    Kindly.

  • Can’t wait! Going to be amazing.

  • beautiful design Sony

  • What’s the length of the cable to connect it to the PS5?

  • This is all very interesting. But for those of us who haven’t even been able to buy a PS5 yet, news of the VR2 doesn’t really help. If I’m ever able to own a PS5, then I’ll be interested in the availability of VR2. Perhaps there will be a bundle deal for those still waiting on PS5, once VR2 is released? That might be some compensation for the long console availability wait. :)

  • This is so Awesome! I can’t wait!

  • So excited! I’m concerned that it will sell out fast though.

    • ussualy length of cable on this vr headsets are really long, anyways since this is a simple usb-c cable you can also replace by your own cable with the size you need
