Bungie is Joining PlayStation

Legendary developer to join PlayStation as independent, multi-platform studio and publisher.

Today I am happy to announce Bungie will be joining the PlayStation family.

First off, I want to be very clear to the community that Bungie will remain an independent and multi-platform studio and publisher. As such, we believe it makes sense for it to sit alongside the PlayStation Studios organization, and we are incredibly excited about the opportunities for synergies and collaboration between these two world-class groups. I have spent a lot of time with Pete Parsons, Jason Jones, and the Bungie management team to develop the right relationships where they will be fully backed and supported by Sony Interactive Entertainment and enabled to do what they do best — build incredible worlds that captivate millions of people.

Bungie’s world-class expertise in multi-platform development and live game services will help us deliver on our vision of expanding PlayStation to hundreds of millions of gamers. Bungie is a great innovator and has developed incredible proprietary tools that will help PlayStation Studios achieve new heights under Hermen Hulst’s leadership.

Here are a few words from Hermen about this exciting acquisition and what it means for gamers.

I am absolutely thrilled to announce a new member will be joining the PlayStation family!

I’ve been a fan of Bungie for many years. I have admired and enjoyed the games that they create – and have great respect for their skill in building worlds that gamers want to explore again and again.

Bungie makes games with outstanding technology that are enormously fun to play. They also have unmatched dedication to the communities that play their games, and everyone at PlayStation, and PlayStation Studios, will be excited about what we can share and learn from them.

I have spent a great deal of time with the senior team at Bungie and it is clear their experience and skills are highly complementary to our own.We will be ready to welcome and support Bungie as they continue to grow, and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for this incredible team.

– Hermen Hulst, Head of PlayStation Studios

Here are a few words from Pete Parsons, CEO of Bungie.

We believe games have limitless potential, and that to do anything worthwhile in entertainment, we must bet big on our vision, on our studio, and on our incredible team of trusted creators who build unforgettable worlds that truly matter to people.

In Sony, we have found a partner who unconditionally supports us in all we are and who wants to accelerate our vision to create generation-spanning entertainment, all while preserving the creative independence that beats in Bungie’s heart. Like us, Sony believes that game worlds are only the beginning of what our IPs can become. Together, we share a dream of creating and fostering iconic franchises that unite friends around the world, families across generations, and fans across multiple platforms and entertainment mediums.

Today, Bungie begins our journey to become a global multi-media entertainment company.

CREATIVE FREEDOM

Since taking flight in 1991, Bungie has always charted the future with our own star map – a path that is driven by our people and for our community. We are continuing that journey with new worlds in development, and we can’t wait to share them with you.

With Sony, the potential for our universes is unlimited. Our future games will take bold steps into unexplored spaces for Bungie, continue to push the boundaries of what is possible, and will always be built on a foundation of creating meaningful, lifelong friendships and memories.

We remain in charge of our destiny. We will continue to independently publish and creatively develop our games. We will continue to drive one, unified Bungie community. Our games will continue to be where our community is, wherever they choose to play.

With Sony’s support, the most immediate change you will see is an acceleration in hiring talent across the entire studio to support our ambitious vision. If this speaks to you, and you want to help us put a dent in the universe, we are hiring across all disciplines for Destiny 2 and for all new worlds beyond.

THREE DECADES AND COUNTING

What makes our worlds come to life is our community and our people in the studio. Our people are the soul of Bungie. Empowered by our people, we have pushed the boundaries of what we thought was possible and transformed who we are as a company.

Over the past 30 years, the inviting worlds we’ve built have turned into thriving communities, and that community is the true magic. These communities have taken Bungie beyond games. They have forged life-long bonds, and humbled us with the real, meaningful good they drive within us and the world.

More than anything, Sony understands that our people and our community are both the priority, and the heart of our success, and are willing to stand alongside us as we continue to use our platform to drive action towards a more welcoming and equitable world. Our goal is to build a place where the world’s most creative and talented people can come and do their best work, no matter who they are, where they are from, or how they identify.

That’s the real dent in the universe we want to make — the one we want to last beyond us.

Be a part of this future with us. See you Starside.

  • I think this is a smart move from sony, keep the games multiplatform while making them look like the good guys! :)

  • Good job! Welcome BUNGIE! I think this was a great deal to make.❤💪🏿💪🏿🐐🐐🐐2️⃣

  • Maybe this will stop them from crapping all over D2 players… Nah, they’ll still do it. Good luck Sony.

  • Great news! I love that you are committing to keeping Destiny 2 multiplatform for everyone to enjoy. I really hope you dont do PS exclusive content like back in D1 and early D2. We don’t need a divided community. What i would like to see are features to strengthen the PS experience like full dualsense support and discord on the console for proper PS/PC chat.

  • Great
    Very good acquisition.
    Congratulations 🎉
I look forward to seeing great games.

  • I did expect an EA buy out. Congratulations, you guys got the same WTF to come out of my mouth as when Microsoft bought Activision.

  • Amazing flex, guys. Let’s go!

  • People saying that they only have one good title… that is just popular opinion, at the end this is a good company and Sony needed to come up with a good announcement to rise up the stock value since the downfall it took after MS announcement.

    • Yeah, I believe they only bought Bungie because of the stock market hit they took. They’re being smart about this

  • Will Socom finally be replaced with something? 🤔

It’d be nice to have a great multi-player again

  • @PlayStation imagine a game with the gameplay and lore style of Destiny, and procedurally generated worlds and techniques of No Man’s Sky and Returnal to make one hell of an epic game!!! @PlayStation please do it! 🙏🏻

  • Why spend billions on a company to only NOT make them exclusive to PlayStation? They were already not exclusive to PlayStation and it didn’t cost you billions.

  • Why? Why are you continuing to whitewash PlayStation studios? Why not Square Enix? Why not Sega? Why not Take Two Interactive? Wouldn’t have been much more than this and you would have gained a large IP collection with it? Especially Square Enix? How are you this offensive towards those of us who want diverse studio acquisition? Ah well, enjoy completely ignoring us as usual Jim.

  • Next, Sony should look at up and coming studios, like Game Science, Ember Lab, Cygames, and Neowiz. And an established studio like From Software. The new studios may not make the most money immediately, but the there’s potentially a high ROI in the mid to long term.

  • Microsoft owns Crash and Spyro, Sony owns Bungie, the world continues to be weird. Is this truly the end times?

Also, please be done with Destiny already

  • Not to happy about this as well as Microsoft snapping up everything. I also don’t believe either Activision or Bungie are worth that much money, both have lost some of their best talent over the years and their original ips milked out and they both basicly worry with one genre of game now. Would love to see Bungie do something different with the talent they have left on board. But all that money is for nothing if all the talent leaves the studio. And if you keep doing the same thing in a series without anything fresh and new to add, you see it all the time in sales. Its almost like super hero burn out in movies, some you might go see every time even if the story is the same because you love the character but if it doesn’t live up to what you expect you might wait on the next one when its almost free to see, and some don’t need to be done because its lame character but they do it anyways and hype it up to generate whatever sucker cash they can.

  • Great move Sony! This is a great opportunity for Bungie to work with guys. Expecting some great new IPs otw!

  • New IP?

  • Good decision and a good future for the gamers 🙏👍

  • This is great news! Aside from Destiny I can’t wait to see what’s to come from this partnership in the future.

  • You should try and partner up with Apple considering there competing with well you know,
And buy EA or Ubisoft, make them decent

  • Wow this acquisition makes a lot, a lot of sense. Bungie has around 800 developers that can bring in expertise and tools for Sony to finally get a sizable foothold on the live service space. Destiny 2 is definitely a big success from which lessons and tools will now trickle down to all PS studios. Bungie’s IPs can now grow so much more. Such a smart acquisition.

  • I been bungie fan they make best games

  • If nothing is going to be exclusive and everything stays the same this was pointless. Go buy take two, square enix, or capcom.

  • I have a feeling some destiny movies might be produced by sony pictures in the near future then.

  • Sony should make a halo ps5 cover for ps5

  • Sony go and buy rockstar or EA

  • The only Bungy games I’ve played were the Myth series back in the ’90s. Was never interested in Halo or Destiny. I wonder if the multi platform thing means PC and no Xbox or both. Maybe the new games will be timed exclusive for a year??

  • I think we all know why they bought them, so Microsoft couldn’t. Good for you sony, hope Bungie becomes better

  • Welcome!!!

  • YES!! Now we can finally get that long-awaited Marathon re-master!

  • Thank you Sony.
Now i could finally uninstall Destiny 2 on PC and PS4 as it won’t be multiplatform anymore, and cross-save will be disabled soon.
At least it saved me some space since i only have 3.TB SSD.
Sony lied about Psygnosis being multiplatform since 1995. Don’t believe a word about Bungie being multiplatform. It will never happen.

  • Welcome to the team Bungie!

  • I do not like this. After all the broken promises with Destiny I don’t trust Bungie.

Many other studios could use that cash, Bungie does not do what they say they will do. I feel they do not respect gamers.

I will not play their games.

  • Destiny Faceplates please

  • Boring.

  • Warhawk Reboot!

  • Meh, call me if Sony ever buys Sega, Capcom and/or Konami.

  • I love Bungie but this is the strangest “acquisition” I have heard of. I don’t understand how you pay 3.6 billion for a company to stay completely independent and own everything… Couldn’t they do that without your 3.6 billion? Am I missing something??

  • Heck yeah! This is awesome!

  • Can anyone help list anything “tangible” that PlayStation players get from this $3.9 Billion deal?

  • Next company to acquire should be CAPCOM

  • This is not good news for gamers. Fewer independent studios means fewer ideas and perspectives and views can be made. Worse yet, they fell victim to the CensorStation. Not that Bungie was really anything that would be missed, but still, consolidation of game development under the control of a few is bad for games and gamers.

  • What a waste and an even bigger waste than the millions you paid for DOAloop timed exclusivity 🙄

Never bought or bothered with a Bungie game in my life and I certainly still won’t under the new train wreck upper management running/ruining everything at PlayStation today.

Thanks for nothing yet again Hermen.

  • Konami, Rockstar Games, Ready At Dawn.

  • To be honest I’m not a great fan of Bungie at all. There games have never gotten my interest.

  • Any chance you can aquire all Konami past games? Not the company itself just the license to there past games.

  • Leave it to Sony and its current leadership to even make me stop caring about their studio acquisitions. I love Bungie and think they are a very talented studio in the FPS genre but without exclusivity, what’s the point? Basically, the idea you’re throwing out there is that it’s best to go with the competition and get to play all their exclusives like Elder Scrolls and Starfield, and will still be able to play the games that would formerly be Playstation exclusives (if only on pc). Like you’re actively trying to make the Playstation my secondary, less relevant console, like Nintendo was to my Playstation… At its current rate I’m even losing confidence in owning a Playstation as a secondary console…

  • Will we the ps4 owners see halo hope we do or games like it 😉

  • This is great. May I suggest Universal Pictures? Looks like a bargain and also has Turok IP witch is one of my favorite games. And Ember Labs made a amazing game and their talent shows.

  • Hologram TV will likely end physical consoles and Exclusives. All you need is the app to chose which game you want to buy and play and presto.

End to all console wars. That’s what I think will eventually happen. What do you folks think?
