UPDATE: Pre-order Horizon Forbidden West now: Collector’s and Digital Deluxe Editions detailed

All pre-order details for this awe-inspiring continuation of Aloy’s journey, coming February 18 2022.

Thursday was to be a celebration of Horizon Forbidden West and the amazing team at Guerrilla working to deliver it on February 18, 2022. However, it’s abundantly clear that the offerings we confirmed in our pre-order kickoff missed the mark.

Last year we made a commitment to deliver free upgrades for our cross-gen launch titles, which included Horizon Forbidden West. While the pandemic’s profound impact pushed Forbidden West out of the launch window we initially envisioned, we will stand by our offer: Players who purchase Horizon Forbidden West on PlayStation 4 will be able to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version for free.

I also want to confirm today that moving forward, PlayStation first-party exclusive cross-gen titles (newly releasing on PS4 & PS5)–both digital and physical*–will offer a $10 USD digital upgrade option from PS4 to PS5. This will apply to the next God of War and Gran Turismo 7, and any other exclusive cross-gen PS4 & PS5 title published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

— Jim Ryan, President & CEO, Sony Interactive Entertainment

*To upgrade an eligible PS4 game on disc to the digital PS5 version, you will need a PS5 console with a disc drive. PS4 game discs can’t be used with the PlayStation®5 Digital Edition.

Horizon Forbidden West is coming to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles on February 18, 2022! We were ecstatic to finally be able to share the release date with you last week during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live, and to see everyone’s reactions to our news.

Pre-orders for the game are available now across the globe, so we wanted to share more details about the various editions that you can get your hands on.

  • I mean really, thats what happens when you sell digital only consoles, you force consumers to have to choose and apparently the consumers that purchased the disc based systems get screwed. THEY BOUGHT A DIGITAL ONLY CONSOLE BECAUSE THEY DIDNT WANT A COLLECTORS EDITION, OBVIOUSLY! What a stupid business decision. Digital only console buyers just wanted digital versions of the game. Stupid…..

  • Increasingly, Mr. Ryan only seems to open his mouth when he needs to switch feet.

SIE has a real leadership problem folks.

  • If you release a collector’s edition without a disc, I’m never going to buy it. Simple as that. And additionally, it will only engender bad will on my part toward you. So good luck with that if that’s your plan going forward.

  • I wonder if they are going to reduce the price of the PS5 standard version since the PS4 costs 10€ less and have a free upgrade to PS5.

  • So if I got this right. Those who buy the ps4 version of this game will get the ps5 version for less money than those who buy the ps5 version directly.

    Good to know.

  • There have been quite a lot of “marks missed” since the launch of the PS5. Granted you have listened on a few, the problem still stands that they keep happening.

It’s clear the leadership has lost touch with it’s base and the base shouldn’t have to dish out “backlash” for you to do something that is in the best interest of gamers.

  • “Oops, we did it again, sorry” “Future upgrades will be $10.”

  • A collector’s edition without the physical copy of the game!!!!? Stupidest bundle ever!

  • Yeah I guess this makes it better but then it needs to be addressed that the PS4 version is 10$ dollars cheaper and can now upgrade for free. Which is awesome and I’ll be getting the PS5 version on a discount then. I like physical media I don’t’t care about it matching the version I’m playing. So I’ll be canceling or selling ce and getting the standard ps4 at some point.

    • Agree. They make game price $10 higher. Why do we have to pay even more for upgrades?
Sadly, PS became *For the payers*

  • “Thursday was to be a celebration, but its abundantly clear our preorder offerings missed the mark”.
No Jim Ryan,as has been a sadly apparent feature of your tone deaf management, you keep trying to push the envelope & see what you can get away with in the face of more consumer friendly console/PC store fronts, bunker down in silence hoping it goes away then go into damage control.
You’re fast losing not only the goodwill built by previous management during the late ps3/ early ps4 eras, but the trust of PS Gamers & smaller indie developers alike.

If you truly listened & engaged with the PS fan base, you wouldn’t have been saying “Who’d want to play old Gran Turismo?” or “We’ve dabbled in backwards compatibility but its too expensive” (beyond ps4 on ps5). 🤔
You wouldn’t have closed the legacy PSN Store with minimal notice leaving Indie Vita devs high & dry, then only keep it half-heartedly open for purchases but no sales or extending the digital new content deadline. Its on life support until it can be quietly closed again.
Instead of exploring means of improving digital legacy access into ps4/5 gens, its summarily dismissed as little used when by admission you haven’t made an effort being too costly. 😕
Small Indie devs & publishers have been in the news saying the reason games have been MIA from PSN or never on sale was due to a lack of Account Managers, accessibility to sales being invite-only & lack of visibility.
And after situations like Cyberpunk 2077, why is there still a lack of Steam style refunds & gifting friends etc.
Instead of waiting for blog comments, & second hand twitter comments being passed up the corporate ladder, engage with you customers & start being proactive with customer friendly initiatives again. If you want to convert your ps4 audience, give them incentives to do so.

    • Well Said

    • XBox brought all their older generation of games into their updated XBox Store. Steam also does that. I think that the fact that Playstation decided to abandon pre PS4 digital content is a huge oversight. Nintendo also does something similar, abandoning older digital content. I would be much more inclined to purchase on Steam / XBox because they continue to support older digital purchases.
Playstation and Nintendo have.huge red flags and are imo not suitable for digital purchases if someone values longevity of their purchases. Incidentally their refund policies also severely lag behind.

    • A better response than I can give. Mind I could throw in more issues, but I’ve done that on this page already 😅…

  • So is it free or is it $10 USD?

“Players […] on PlayStation 4 will be able to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version for free.”

“PlayStation first-party exclusive cross-gen titles […] will offer a $10 USD digital upgrade option from PS4 to PS5.”

This post is pretty much the culmination of how Sony tries to squeeze every cent of their fanbase, regardless of consequence. Did you even see what Xbox is doing, Sony? It’s not just that first party games are FREE to” upgrade”, there is no upgrade to talk about; on Gen9 you get the Gen9 game, on Gen8 you get Gen8, on PC, PC. All with automatic and FREE cross-save among all versions without needing for third-parties to solve via custom solutions or “transferring” saves between consoles.

  • Thank you Jim .💗💗💗
Thank you for your support of the PlayStation community.

  • No physical copy in the Collector’s Edition means I ain’t buying it. Sorry! “¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • Standing by your offer would mean free upgrades for ALL cross-gen titles Jimbo, nice little PR spin though.

“Last year we made a commitment to deliver free upgrades for our cross-gen launch titles, which included Horizon Forbidden West. • What a wonderful surprice. You make games more expensive and add to their overall price, and now you want us to pay even more for upgrades. Great move. For the players!

  • “moving forward, PlayStation first-party exclusive cross-gen titles (newly releasing on PS4 & PS5)–both digital and physical*–will offer a $10 USD digital upgrade option from PS4 to PS5. We are just gonna sit and watch them change their words just like that? This is not what you promised Sony when you said you will have free path upgrade to next gen.

    • I don’t mind the $10 upgrade if it was really $10 but it’s not as I will be paying £10 which on this day is $13.83 by exchange rate so Sony please don’t say its only $10 as its not

  • Congrats to Jim Ryan for going back and keeping his promise of a free update on Horizon 2 from the PS4 version to the PS5 version, but his update will only be free on Horizon 2 and not on all cross-gen titles as he promised last year. Maybe he hopes we’ll quickly forget his lie and maybe he also hopes we say thanks for paying updates PS4> PS5 10$ for the next upcoming games ? I think customer satisfaction is low in his priority list.
He is of the same cloth as great leaders of the old world who like him lie incessantly and without scruples making our world a great place to live (economic crisis, global warming, short-therm vison).
A person like him has nothing to do at the helm of Playstation.
And by the way Jim! Ok for the free update on Horizon 2 but where is blu-ray disc in the collector’s editions ?

  • Hi,
I am a collector and wanted to ask why, if we buy the Collectors or Regalla Edition, why we don’t receive a physical copy of the game when we are paying a large amount of money for it? Only to receive a digital copy and forcing us to spend another £60-70 just for a disc?

    Stu

  • Let me understand, If Horizon 2 gets free upgrade path from PS4 to PS5 and the PS4 costs 60$

Than why the PS5 version is still costs 70$ ?

Sony PlayStation should decrease the PS5 version to 60$, return 10$ to people, there is no point selling 70$ PS5 version
when the PS4 costs 60$ and gets free upgrade.

    Please PlayStation respond?

  • OK, allowing that option to upgrade is much better, Sony. But still no physical discs for the Collector’s & Regalla editions… Horrible move there. Since you’re not allowing us to do the extremely smart thing, and let us choose to get one with the box sets (at least not yet), here’s an idea; Give a choice to those who want a physical copy to give up our code (maybe send them back, or email you the code number to recind them), and send us a disc. That’s been done before with other games. Paying $200-$260 for just a code is absolutly unacceptable.

  • Thats a problem they’ve created for themselves by increasing the ps5 game price whilst the ps4 remains unaffected. Naturally anybody will pick up the ps4 version if they get the ps5 upgrade for free as why would you pay $10 more for just a ps5 box.

It’s all been caused by their commitment to increase the game price and then going back on the “we believe in generations” to then double down and say horizon will come to ps4 and have a free upgrade as it was a ps5 launch (window) title game.

It’s a problem that would never have happened if they kept to the “we believe in generations” and only released 1st party game on the ps5 moving forward. But they know over 100m users on PS4 will not generate revenue if they kept to that clean split between generations. Their solution was to charge a $10 upgrade path which contradicts their initial HFW commitment of a free upgrade from ps4 to ps5. The result, Sony loses out on the $10 for each ps4 version sold that goes on to play it on ps5. They clearly wanted to get around it quietly.

It’s been constant mixed messaging from a company that got it right with the ps4. Such a mess.

  • So surely you’ll now be setting the PS5 edition (digital and physical) to the same price as the PS4 version? Because of not no one in their right mind would buy the PS5 copy for more when you can get the cheaper PS4 version and upgrade it for free? Such a mess handing MS a free win like this, you should have picked a strategy for 1st party upgrades from day one and applied it consistently, complete own goal on your part.

  • 10$ to upgrade, Xbox offers smart delivery free upgrade, Xbox game pass instant access to newly launched first party titles, why so greedy Sony? Isn’t from 60$ to 70$ enough for you? What happened to “for the players”?

    • imagine saying this BS on PC, “if you want to go from 60 fps to 144 and from 1080p to 4K you have to pay us more money” bro that’s why i like PC more. as PS4 owner I’m so disappointed

  • Now all they need to now is add physical discs to those collectors editions and everything will be fine!

  • Glad about the reversal and consistency of pricing policies, BUT WE FANS OF MLB 21 THE SHOW STILL GOT THE SHAFT WITH NO UPGRADE PATH, NEITHER FREE NOR WE A FEE!!! I bought the game for PS4 back in March because I did not have a PS5, now that I want the PS5 version I have to buy the game again (and 10$ higher)!? No thank you, I’ll save it for MLB 22.

Thank you Mr. Ryan for creating such a controversial and convoluted mess on something so simple Microsoft got it right from the start. Worst of all is that MLB The Show is a PlayStation staple, and we loyal fans of the game and long time users of the console got a worst treatment than XBOX newcomers whom got a free upgrade option plus a chance to get it on Game Pass.

  • Hey, can we unsubscribe to this Jim Ryan clown please.

  • So A PS4 user gets the game £10 cheaper gets a free upgrade for PS5
So can play on both consoles.
To buy the PS5 version it is £10 more and can only play on PS5.
    How Stupid is this

  • You know what’s great about Xbox, everything bought under my Microsoft account from Xbox 360 ers to present day is in my game library available to play anytime, if I login to my account from another Xbox at someone else’s house I can download and play any game I own and continue from my last save point, anything bought digitally on Xbox one and has a Xbox series X/S version is automatically upgraded or available to download the new gen edition free. The games are the same price retail regardless of what gen console you have and Sony charges 10$ for the new version after you just upgraded to their latest console….. You Sony people just take it from them right in the ***, what’s wrong with you guys Sony is a joke

    • It’s a shame how Playstation went downhill quickly over last few years. I have also shifted to XBox as primary because its just better in every way. I used to get every multi-plat on Playstation until they changed direction losing crossplay, losing crossbuy, losing backwards compatibility, closed down japan studio, closed evolution studio, got interested in remastering 1 year old game etc. It looks like an inside sabotage job. Quite embarassing.

  • Yeah Jim Ryan I think going to drive Playstation in the ground with the greed aspect. They have had some great CEOs that understood the business and not treat us fans as cash cow. You have a steel book collectors edition without disc hmm okay. I can understand the ps4 cross gen support. Xbox is doing the same thing and that idea is come from the jealousy of PC. That’s just money left on the table. But that’s why I don’t buy collector edition of anything just give me the game. Those are just toys on the shelf anyway.

  • wow Sony your greed has no limit, 10$ for a FPS and visual upgrade imagine saying this BS on PC, “if you want to go from 60 fps to 144 and from 1080p to 4K you have to pay us more money” bro that’s why i like PC more. as PS4 owner I’m so disappointed

  • Regalla edition went fast!

  • I understand that these “upgrades” cost money for Sony to do, but what you are presenting is a false choice.

I think most people would be happy to have the ability to change the frame rate on newer hardware, and this seems like it would be minimal for Sony to implement.

Sony’s current policy is anti consumer. I shouldn’t have to pay again to have a digital title I bought already run on the more capable hardware I also bought.

Just another reason to game on PC.

  • Jim Ryan, in all honesty I think it’s time for you to step down and let someone else take lead.

  • Sony is standing by the free upgrade & going forward the free upgrade will be $10??

  • Imagine PC gamers paying to use the capability of the hardware they just bought. Let me pay $10 so I can use my gpu more.

  • Third party games = free upgrades
Sony “exclusive” games = $10 upgrades

    …What?!

    (I have a PS5 only so I’m not involved in this, but c’mon sony….)

  • Please someone get Jim Ramsey and Herman Hulst out of the office asap. They have no clear future goal when it comes to this company or with the playstation brand in itself. They are really showing how long they can keep this up when it comes to these outrageous prices or lack of communication and how much they can screw their playerbase over. Not even Nintendo goes this far when it comes to being this ignorant in the gaming industry. What a shame

  • 😂😂 yall are funny asf. Keep on crying ya pansies! Grown and men crying over a literal disc. As long as the game is good and I get the game whether physical or digital thats what matter. But yall keep on crying its making me laugh and I’m gonna enjoy it no matter what. They aren’t losing money over the 8 guys who said they weren’t buying lmao

    • You don’t get it!
Having a physical copy is special
A copy of Mario game sold for millions do you really think a digital would have done the same

  • Here’s some more ideas – Lower the price of the PS5 physical copies to match the PS4, which will get a free upgrade to the PS5 version. Are you seriously charging $10 for a case with a white stripe on the top? No one who knows about all of this is going to buy the PS5 version anymore.

Also, you now have absolutely NO defense for not putting a disc in the Collector’s & Regalla editions. Just put a PS4 disc in, and we can upgrade that to the PS5. Paying $200-$260 for a piece of paper instead of physical media makes no sense. Think about this logic – There are a ton of people who aren’t buying one of the big boys solely because of the lack of a physical copy. Including a disc will finally convince them to make the bigger investment, MAKING YOU EVEN MORE MONEY.

    *mic drop*

  • Thank you Jim
But didn’t you also promised free upgrade to God of war 🤔 😏
And when is playstation 5 pro coming?
I want to purchase a bundle of playstation 5 Pro with VR 2 gear and headphones

Things are moving slow I might die before I get my hands on a PS5 PRO console 😔

  • I guess I will not be buying this
For the same reason I didn’t buy the last of us 2
    Pleanty fish in the sea
And this is a fish I don’t want

  • Well me buying PS5 games at launch is no longer something I’ll be offering to Sony. I’ll buy pre owned or in sales. And multiplat I’ll just buy on the series X. I’m old enough to know when I’m being robbed. Luckily except activision no one else in the industry is adding next gen tax. Good luck with that strategy 👍

  • With how Jim Liar is running PlayStation so scummy! I will put on hold buying a PS5 and I’m more tempted in buying Series X more especially with how Forza Horizon 5 looks and plays! Damn I’m all in! “Miss the mark Jim Liar” oh please gamers are not stupid! Your business model is intentional just admit your greedy and trash as a CEO!

  • Sony. You initially told us that cross-gen titles would have a free upgrade to PS5. Many of your consumers want you to keep your promise.

You want to charge 70 dollars for next-gen (PS5) only games? Go ahead. There wasn’t a promise, as far as I’m aware, to keep games at 60 dollars. But that’s next-gen, not cross-gen.

This is the first time I’ve been conflicted to buy your games. And the sad part is that you’re causing the conflict. Those were your words, not ours.

Do the right thing: Keep your word.
    Cross-gen 60 dollars.

  • I am making a good salary online from home.I’ve made 97,999 dollar’s so for last 5 months working online and I’m a full time student.DEc I’m using an online business opportunity I’m just so happy that I found out about it.

  • For those who have already pre-ordered the PS5 version, what is the plan?
    – Too bad. If you want to save $10, call sony, try to get a refund, then go back and buy the PS4 version?
    – $10 reimbursed to your account wallet?
    – “Free upgrade” is really just corporate speech for “you won’t pay more than the PS5 version” but you still need to pay the $10 upgrade fee?

  • I have a question.

You said that the price increase of the Games was justified by the fact that Game-Development has become more expensive and that’s the reason for the prices to be increased.
I understand that and I also like to pay it when I see the difference to before.
Now I wonder why the PS4 Version is 10$ cheaper than the PS5 Version even though it’s one and the same game.

Is that going to be the same joke as Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, where only the resolution was increased, the DualSense gimmick and the 3D audio were bungled in and the rest stayed the same? No better textures, no better light and shadow effects, no better LoD, no better particle effects!
Do you want to tell me now that a higher Resolution, the DualSense gimmick and 3D audio cost more than before?

If you justify the price increase with higher costs in the Game-Development, then please also increase the prices of the PS4 games or at least all Cross-Gen-Games, otherwise it is very, very implausible!

  • Sony should be offering free upgrades to the PS5 version of games until the PS5 is readily available for everyone to buy. When people have to spontaneously, be in just the right place and just the right time to thread that needle of luck and correct Tweets (from people other than Sony) just to purchase a PS5 that they previously had no idea that morning they were going to be able to get, then the least Sony could do is make sure the game they just sold them the week before is playable on the new system that customer just acquired. It’s hard enough for us out here Sony, don’t make it harder.

  • I had to cancel my collector edition, because of the no disc part not coming with the steel case. LMAO, This makes no sense and was rubbing me too wrongly to justify me sticking with my pre-order. I care more to have a physical copy in hand, than to have a digital game linked to my account.
I would have loved to keep my order in, but it just wasn’t meant to be. I guess I will have to wait on a GOTY Edition down the line.
