Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut arrives on PS5 and PS4 consoles on August 20

Explore the brand new Iki Island, plus PS5-specific enhancements like DualSense controller haptic feedback, Japanese lip sync, and more.

What a year it’s been! As we approach the one-year anniversary of Ghost of Tsushima, we are so grateful for the outpouring of love you’ve sent us since launch. It means so much to see how Jin’s story has resonated with all of you, and we feel incredibly lucky to have such dedicated and supportive fans.

We’ve thought a lot about how to expand Jin’s story, and we’ve also spent the last year poring over all of your feedback about how we could improve the experience of playing Ghost of Tsushima. We’ve been hard at work on a brand new edition of the game, which not only includes a new chapter in Jin’s journey, but also some new updates that are a direct response to some of the community’s most-requested features.

We’re happy to announce that on August 20, we’ll be releasing Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut on both PS5 and PS4 consoles. This new edition comes packed not only with the original game and every piece of additional content we’ve sold to date, but a brand-new adventure for Jin alongside a bunch of new features that we’re excited to reveal.

Iki Island

If you’re a history buff, you may know that in addition to Tsushima, the neighboring island of Iki was also invaded during this time period. Today we’re excited to reveal that a whole new chapter in Jin’s journey is coming and will take place on Iki. In this new story, Jin travels to the island to investigate rumors of a Mongol presence. But soon, he finds himself caught up in events with deeply personal stakes that will force him to relive some traumatic moments from his past.

We’ll have more to share about the story of Iki soon, but today we can confirm that beyond a whole new story and new characters, this new island also features tons of new content including brand new environments to explore, new armor for Jin as well as his horse, new mini-games, new techniques, new enemy types, and much more. There are even new animals to pet!

On both platforms, Director’s Cut will also offer new Trophies to unlock for the new Iki content.

PS5 exclusive features

While Director’s Cut players on both PS4 and PS5 will be able to experience the Iki Island content, PlayStation 5 players will have access to a few additional new features.

We’ve heard your feedback about the lack of Japanese lip sync in the original version of Ghost of Tsushima, and it’s something we worked hard to address in this new release. Thanks to the PS5’s ability to render cinematics in real time, cutscenes in Ghost of Tsushima and on Iki Island on PS5 will now offer lip sync for Japanese voice over.

We’re also happy to confirm that Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, and the new Iki Island expansion will all take advantage of haptic feedback and adaptive triggers in the Director’s Cut. There will also be enhancements to 3D audio* on PS5, as well as drastically improved load times, 4K resolution options** and framerates targeting 60 FPS.

Transferring your progress

If you already own Ghost of Tsushima on PS4, you’ll be able to transfer your save to PS5 to pick up where you left off. For new players, the new Iki Island content will be available beginning in Act 2 of Ghost of Tsushima, after you’ve made your way to the Toyotama region.

Other updates

Alongside the Director’s Cut, anyone who already owns Ghost of Tsushima will be able to download a patch containing some new updates. Once again, many of these updates are directly thanks to the constant stream of feedback you’ve been providing us since launch, which we’re extremely appreciative of.

All players will receive a patch with some new accessibility options for alternate controller layouts, as well as the option to enable a target lock-on during combat. And for the person who tweets at us all the time asking for an option to hide your quiver during gameplay: yes, we’ll be adding that, too!

Finally, for Ghost of Tsushima: Legends fans, we’ll also be releasing some new updates, including an all-new mode that we’re excited to detail in the weeks to come. All Ghost of Tsushima: Legends*** updates will be available at no additional charge to owners of any version of Ghost of Tsushima on either platform.

Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut will launch on August 20 for $69.99 USD on PS5 and $59.99 USD on PS4.

  • i love the game + i buy on ps4 digital
so asking mony to upgrade = NO

  • Free upgrade would’ve been great incentive to try the co op and buy the DLC. This will probably result in less profits from people not buying it now, then the profits you get from charging people to upgrade… Same goes for making games more expensive in general.

  • Oh I now see it in the ps store now

  • I’m one of the lucky ones that doesn’t have to purchase this game twice it’s my first and only time buying this game just saying

  • This is being handled really poorly IMHO. I just bought the game within past couple of weeks. I didn’t have a PS4 when GoT game out, waited to play on PS5. Now you’re saying I have to pay $30 extra to play the PS5 version. I don’t want the expansion, I just want 4K.

Can’t you detect who already had the digital version purchased with a PS5 and give them a free upgrade or at most charge them the $10?

  • I own the physical disc. They now want $19.99 for me to get an extra island to run around on? I think I’ll wait until it goes on sale. That’s way too expensive for an expansion!!

  • I’ll gladly pay $30 to have it on PS5, this game is truly a masterpiece!

    • It already available and updated on the PS5 for FREE and runs better than the PS4 version. The Directors cut includes the expansion as well as some PS5 specific updates as well. You are correct, this game is truly a masterpiece.

  • I checked the uk store and it shows it would cost £24.99 to upgrade to the directors cut and a further £9 to the ps5. Pretty poor indeed

  • 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

  • $30 more dollars to play the PS5 version?? No thanks. I am not paying $95 for this game.

  • To be clear: “If you already own Ghost of Tsushima on PS4:

You can pre-order an upgrade to Director’s Cut on PS4 for $19.99 USD. This upgrade will become available starting on August 20.
    Starting on August 20:

You can also upgrade directly (from original Ghost of Tsushima PS4) to Director’s Cut on PS5 for $29.99 USD

If you own a PS5 and don’t care about the new chapter, they already updated the game for for FREE! The director’s cut on PS5 gives you haptics, 4k, 60fps etc PLUS a whole new chapter. If you don’t want that, then no need to buy the DC. They seem to be giving some further updates to EVERYONE who owns the game as well for $0. C’mon people, we can do this…

  • If I pre order the ps4 edition and then I upgrade it to the ps5 edition, will I still be able to play the ps4 edition?

    • I suppose so. If it is anything like the Valhalla upgrade from the PS4
disc version to the digital PS5 version then you will have two copies of the game taking up space on your SSD if you choose to keep the PS4 version as well there which is expensive.

  • NOT looking forward to the haptic feedback feature. My R2 on my PS5 controller is way too OTT sensitive even with it set to weak or off.

I heard that Sony is being sued over this by some parties. If I happen to touch the plastic AROUND that trigger button the thing goes off, BANG. Frustrating to say the least. Makes for many mistakes in-game.🎮

  • People complaining about game prices well in my country Australia games cost triple the price try ghost of Tsushima director’s cut $124.95 Australian dollars yeah that’s right

  • Thank you Sucker Punch Productions 4 such a beautiful game!!

  • Vadleism454maste

Thanks alot Sony you’ve had to make me buy another disc!😭

  • Vadleism454maste

Why didn’t they just make this a update for the ps4!😭

    This upgrade is awesome news

  • Hi there! Long time playstation fan and ps5 owner here. I don’t often post but wanted to share some feedback. Firstly I’m loving the PS5 and the user experience it has provided. However I feel that charging for this upgrade is asking too much. Games cost $70, controllers cost $70 ($75 if you want a new color) and now you want me to buy a game I already paid for again.

Microsoft is kind of eating your guys’ lunch right now with gamepass and the value they are offering with their platform. This, combined with the recent news that Sony isn’t really easy to work with if you’re a small developer, is really disheartening as a fan. It makes me (and I’m sure others) question why I should continue supporting you guys if all it has done is make you think way too highly of yourselves to provide competitive value?

Again I love Ghost of Tsushima, However charging me just so I can play the version that works best on my console is pretty lame. Especially when your competitor and other titles on the platform have offered the ps5 version free. When I buy a game on PC or use Gamepass I get the best version that can run on the hardware I’m on. Why is it you think it’s okay to charge me more for the exact same functionality in this case?

You know, as a Sony fan since the PS1, I’ve been around for all of playstations history. It seems the thing that always makes this company backslide (when it comes to playstation) is thinking you’re in a totally dominant position, that you don’t have to concern yourself with what your competitors are doing. Right now that blind thinking is allowing your key competitor make you look very bad in terms of your connection with your fans and how you provide the best value for them.

    • Not to mention where is your answer to all of the games MS just showed off for the next 2 years? Your move Sony!

    • The issue is the two ethos. Microsoft hasnt treated the Series X as a “New” Console, it’s treated it as an addition to its xbox family. And by implementing its xCloud it can ensure epople who cant afford to upgrade for a while can still play their titles through gamepass even if theyre series x exclsuvie.

Sony has decided the PS5 is a new standalone system with some form of backwards support, a former Sony employee offered a little insight in to how Sony view backwards compatibility on reddit.

Theyre two different models, but because Series S|X is treated as a continuation microsoft looks at it as though you upgraded from a 1060 to a 2080Ti you just have the hardware to have the settings cranked up

  • Hey, will i be able to play it on non 4k monitor or tv?

  • Hi if i preorder it , can i play the main story and on august 20 will add the new parts?

  • We wait more cheap digital games , boxed games more cheap , digital games must be more cheap according to boxed games. Another thing we wait a huge midsummer discount at al digital games

  • Charging for the PS5 upgrade is in my opinion anti-consumer. I love Ghost of Tsushima, told all my friends about it and got them to buy the game. I shelled out $200 for the collector’s editon at launch and would gladly pay $20 more for the expansion. But the extra $10 so I can get the PS5 version just to play the expansion, since I already finished the main story? It really leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

The skins/armor and perks that are being given away with the Director’s cut are, correct me if I am wrong, the same as we got with the Collector’s and Digital Deluxe editons. So the DLC feels devalued a little bit too. Basically for $30, if you have a PS5 and already own the Collector’s or Digital Deluxe editon, you get the expansion island, PS5 “upgrade”, a few more songs on the soundtrack you already have that you can’t even listen to on anything but the PS4/PS5, some new pictures to look at, once, in the digital art book you already have also locked to the system, and skins/armor and perks you already have. I would still pay $20 for that though.

That extra $10 is a real kick in the teeth. Makes me feel punished for buying a PS5. Defintely feel punished for buying Ghost of Tsushima Collector’s editon. Though I do have that awesome Sakai mask…but still…not cool at all Sony and Suckerpunch.

What gets me is if they had just charged $29.99 for the expansion and said the PS5 upgrade was included, hardly anyone would have complained, at least until they played the new island and find out it was only $20 worth of content, if that is indeed the case, which I kind of doubt. But then that could have been argued later and PS5 owners would feel less “gouged”. It is not uncommon to be disappointed by a lackluster/overpriced expansion or season pass.

  • Yes! Thank you Sony for showing Microsoft that it’s much better to show your loyal fans your appreciation by charging them for every single little update to have the privilege to play the best version of your games on your almighty better-than-God PS5 console! We love paying you over and over again for slight upgrades!! We can’t get enough of these price increases and completely reasonable upgrade charges! Nomnom nomnom just eating it up cause it’s so goooood! Please raise your prices to $100 per game and $50 per upgrade so we can REALLY know the premium value we are to your company! Nomnomnom!!!!

    • The market will speak with their wallet Sony doesn’t worry about the minority just look at the sales TLOU remake will sell like hot cakes and I’ll buy it when I buy new games I get the gold/ultimate editions of games ghost of Tsushima director’s cut cost $124.95 in my country and I’m buying it haven’t played this game yet

  • I have both of this generations new consoles. As much as people point out the difference in first party titles on the other platform I have to be honest, they haven’t tried to gouge their customers when it comes to upgrading their first party games to run natively. The obvious marketing play here is to call it a “Directors Cut” with the mindset that if you want the definitive version of the game you have to pay for the upgrade. Most of the features here are quality of life improvements and added controller support. Then you look at Metro Exodus which was an extensive overhaul plus QOL improvements. I feel that Sony are taking advantage of the lack of native content on the system, the delays on their games, and their position of having great first party studios and gouging the customers hungry for content. So this is $40CAD for the dlc plus the cross-grade. Half what I paid for the game at launch.

So maybe we get a true 4k/60 without checkerboarding. The loading times were already fast so the improvement there isn’t going to matter much, dualsense support, and proper lip-sync to the Japanese audio tracks are QOL improvements, suggested by the community who bought your game possibly at launch, paying full price. A few years ago Sony made a video poking fun at Microsoft’s poor consumer focus, one can’t help but not see the irony in this.

We have a system that has what I can only describe as an Alpha UI that is a muddled mess, which lacks in backwards compat features, and charges now an additional $10 for its first party games. The two first party games that have received native support (Spider-man and GOT) were locked behind a paywall. Meanwhile your competitor released native versions of many games (Gears5, FH4, gears tactics, Ori and more) at no charge. I have no problem paying for DLC if the value is there. But the added premium just to have the native version just doesn’t seem customer centric. Maybe Sony executives sees its dominant market position in the console space and takes the “people will just pay for it approach”, maybe Sony has done focus groups but scientific study all points to these things do not necessarily produce “True Feelings”. And the overwhelming evidence points to this pricing strategy has not gone over well with the majority of your customers.

So lets look at this on face value. I can pay $89.99CAD for the native directors cut which includes the DLC as a first purchase. Or I can pay an additional $26.99CAD to Upgrade to the PS4 directors cut with the DLC with lesser features. So because I bought the game at launch I can own the upgrade and my total cost is $106.99 + taxes for the lesser version, or i can get the PS5 upgrade for an extra charge pay 1.5 times the amount (in totality) the person who is buying the retail PS5 directors cut for the first time. How is this a good deal for me? Sure i could just buy the DLC and stay on PS4 version but I’m still paying more than the person buying the ps5 retail version for the first time for a lesser version! You really need to go back and rethink this strategy.

    • I struggled with scalpers for months to get a PS5 and finally got one with official retail price in Turkey (865$ usd). I could easily buy an Xbox SX as low as (600$ usd). THANK YOU SO MUCH playstation for punishing me for my decision

  • I preordered the Director’s Cut at full price, but can’t download the base game. Not available in my console library at all. On the PS app I can see it in my purchased library, but can’t request for remote download.

  • If I have a PS4 disc version and buy the 29.99 PS5 director’s cut, do I still need the disc for playing?

  • Honestly I am getting quite tired of the gaming industry and community as a whole. If you don’t like it then don’t buy it, but don’t act like you’re so much better than the people who want to purchase it. It’s their money and they have the right to do what they want to do with it. I am going to buy it cause I WANT to buy it, I am not going to sit here and defend my purchase cause some people think it’s anti consumer or whatever. Would it be better if they just had a separate expansion sure, but I was going to purchase it cause that’s what I want to do. I get so tired of the forums and articles that try to stir up the pot. Some people will pay for it some people will not and it is perfectly fine.

    • if you accept less than is acceptable it becomes the standard. I want to buy it I love the game but i wont pay 1.5 times the amount in total its being offered for, it’s ridiculous. see my other post for added context.

  • Merciless_Light

Does the PS5 Director’s Cut allows you to download the PS4 D’sC free of charge ?

  • The announcement for this could and should have been handled so much better. At this point it honestly appears Sony is intent on marketing to their customers very poorly. It should have been promoted as an expansion dlc (with a premium for the enhanced features of the ps5) with the ability to buy a complete version, directors cut, that includes the dlc for those who do not already own the game. Instead they’ve seemingly done the opposite created annoyance, confusion and division amongst their fans. I hate to say it but Sony are only helping boost the image of pro-consumerism Xbox are attempting to create for themselves with these mis-steps. Xbox did it to themselves last generation and Sony cleverly benefited. I really hope this generation isn’t a ‘roles reversed’ scenario.

  • Since I own the PS4 version, I might upgrade to the directors cut for PS5 since I recently bought one. I am curious about the new content and brushed up controller haptic feedback.

  • YOU $UCK $UCKER PUNCH! I HATE YOU AND YOUR GREED!

  • shadowknight2008

Loved Ghost of Tsushima, thrilled to see an expansion and nice to have an upgrade options. Sucker Punch has made some excellent additions like infamous festival of blood and first light so no doubt this will be a great add on to a masterpiece of a game.

  • earth_inheritor

THIS is how you deal with upgrade paths. Not like Nioh 1 and a bunch of others where you have to buy the entire game again. Charge a lower price for the upgrade. EXACTLY how it should be done.
Free if its just frame rate and small enhancements and a smaller fee for a full upgrade.

  • I can’t even buy the base game on psn now! I don’t want the directors cut just yet.

  • Speaking with ya wallet?

  • For everyone complaining, there is a very simple solution: Don’t buy it. Problem solved.

  • What a rip off! $20 for a DLC 😑
Almost half the price or the original game!!!

  • Has anyone else fallen for this in the UK? As per the tweet from suckerpunch if you buy the upgrade then you can download the PS4 version….well you can’t and they are completely ignoring my messages.

  • 20th August cannot come quick enough, great work from sucker punch, all the bells and whistle’s on the PS5 and brand new content,no complaints from me😁

  • Come on Sony, you release a game at the end of a console gen then treat loyal customers by charging $10 for an upgrade to the next gen? Ridiculous. I will think twice before buying your games at the end of a console generation in the future.

  • Do you still get the discount with a Physical copy of the ps4 version?

  • You people crying about the price don’t buy it it’s as simple as that

  • Ill probably buy the dc upgrade, but Im not paying for the ps5 upgrade.

  • Ok, so I bought the digital version on PS4. I have since moved over to PS5. When I look in the store (Australian), it only offers me the full PS5 version for $124.95AU or an upgrade to what it calls the PS4 version for $29.95AU. There is no option to upgrade directly to the PS5 version that I can find.

    What’s the go??

    • Same for me. I have the ps4 disk and there is no way I can get the PS5 upgrade without buying the DLC. This is the reason why so many people are arguing.

  • So, here’s a situation in which PS5 digital owners are punished. I have the PS4 disc version of Ghost of Tsushima. I have a PS5 Digital. Based on what I’m reading, I can’t upgrade and I have to pay $69.99 for the Director’s Cut……….no thanks.

  • I wonder if we will see higher quality textures in the PS5 version
Its in the texture department Ghost of Tsushima falls a bit flat for me visually

  • Fav game of all time

  • GofT upgrade to ps5 called director’s cut.
I am in deep shock when I read that for this upgrade I will need pay such hig price.
What is the situation now with games for ps5. For players who are not childrens there are 2 games dedicated for ps5 literally. New console after half a year has no others games made for it, and Sony proposition for promoting players who bought Ps5 is to charge them again for the same game but only upgraded, to let them enjoy of new hardware they bought.
I’m starting to regret my decision to buy a new console, high price for new games, no any interesting content for ps5 and pay for upgrade of old games to ps5.
Sony is on his way to selfdestruct. Tkank’s Sony.

  • Dear play$tation,

Bought the collector’s edition last year and then june 2021, the retailer where I ordered the ps5 just gave me the option: if you want to get ps5, we have this bundle for 650€ or this one for 470€ with an extra controller otherwise you’ll wait indefinitely… so feeling a little bit play$tupid i bought the digital one. And for a month i was slightly happy because i finaly had ps5.
And then $uckerpunch… thank you I feel great! Stop being play$tupid!!!
