Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut arrives on PS5 and PS4 consoles on August 20

Explore the brand new Iki Island, plus PS5-specific enhancements like DualSense controller haptic feedback, Japanese lip sync, and more.

What a year it’s been! As we approach the one-year anniversary of Ghost of Tsushima, we are so grateful for the outpouring of love you’ve sent us since launch. It means so much to see how Jin’s story has resonated with all of you, and we feel incredibly lucky to have such dedicated and supportive fans.

We’ve thought a lot about how to expand Jin’s story, and we’ve also spent the last year poring over all of your feedback about how we could improve the experience of playing Ghost of Tsushima. We’ve been hard at work on a brand new edition of the game, which not only includes a new chapter in Jin’s journey, but also some new updates that are a direct response to some of the community’s most-requested features.

We’re happy to announce that on August 20, we’ll be releasing Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut on both PS5 and PS4 consoles. This new edition comes packed not only with the original game and every piece of additional content we’ve sold to date, but a brand-new adventure for Jin alongside a bunch of new features that we’re excited to reveal.

Iki Island

If you’re a history buff, you may know that in addition to Tsushima, the neighboring island of Iki was also invaded during this time period. Today we’re excited to reveal that a whole new chapter in Jin’s journey is coming and will take place on Iki. In this new story, Jin travels to the island to investigate rumors of a Mongol presence. But soon, he finds himself caught up in events with deeply personal stakes that will force him to relive some traumatic moments from his past.

We’ll have more to share about the story of Iki soon, but today we can confirm that beyond a whole new story and new characters, this new island also features tons of new content including brand new environments to explore, new armor for Jin as well as his horse, new mini-games, new techniques, new enemy types, and much more. There are even new animals to pet!

On both platforms, Director’s Cut will also offer new Trophies to unlock for the new Iki content.

PS5 exclusive features

While Director’s Cut players on both PS4 and PS5 will be able to experience the Iki Island content, PlayStation 5 players will have access to a few additional new features.

We’ve heard your feedback about the lack of Japanese lip sync in the original version of Ghost of Tsushima, and it’s something we worked hard to address in this new release. Thanks to the PS5’s ability to render cinematics in real time, cutscenes in Ghost of Tsushima and on Iki Island on PS5 will now offer lip sync for Japanese voice over.

We’re also happy to confirm that Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, and the new Iki Island expansion will all take advantage of haptic feedback and adaptive triggers in the Director’s Cut. There will also be enhancements to 3D audio* on PS5, as well as drastically improved load times, 4K resolution options** and framerates targeting 60 FPS.

Transferring your progress

If you already own Ghost of Tsushima on PS4, you’ll be able to transfer your save to PS5 to pick up where you left off. For new players, the new Iki Island content will be available beginning in Act 2 of Ghost of Tsushima, after you’ve made your way to the Toyotama region.

Other updates

Alongside the Director’s Cut, anyone who already owns Ghost of Tsushima will be able to download a patch containing some new updates. Once again, many of these updates are directly thanks to the constant stream of feedback you’ve been providing us since launch, which we’re extremely appreciative of.

All players will receive a patch with some new accessibility options for alternate controller layouts, as well as the option to enable a target lock-on during combat. And for the person who tweets at us all the time asking for an option to hide your quiver during gameplay: yes, we’ll be adding that, too!

Finally, for Ghost of Tsushima: Legends fans, we’ll also be releasing some new updates, including an all-new mode that we’re excited to detail in the weeks to come. All Ghost of Tsushima: Legends*** updates will be available at no additional charge to owners of any version of Ghost of Tsushima on either platform.

Pre-orders and upgrades

Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut will launch on August 20 for $69.99 USD on PS5 and $59.99 USD on PS4.

You’ll be able to pre-order digitally at PlayStation Store, or physical versions from various retailers. If you pre-order at participating retailers, you’ll receive a digital mini soundtrack with tracks from the original Ghost of Tsushima as well as two new songs from Iki Island, and a digital art book featuring a selection of art from Ghost of Tsushima as well as 10 new pieces of Iki Island concept art.

Pre-order at PS Store any time before launch and you’ll get access to download the PS4 version of Ghost of Tsushima immediately, so you can start experiencing the main game early and transfer your progress to pick up where you left off when the Director’s Cut launches in August.

  • I’m a bit confused with the upgrade options, If I upgrade from PS4 original game to PS5 director’s cut for 29,99$ I’ll have available the director’s cut content on PS4 too, right?

If I upgrade to Director’s cut on PS4 for 19,99$, I can upgrade to the PS5 version for 9,99$ later, right? Want to know this as I don’t own a PS5 yet, but have all intentions to get one as soon as prices are normalized, but surely by August 20th I could revisit GoT again and play the expansion before playing it again on PS5 later.

  • So glad it’s getting more PS5 integration. Easy decision on getting the upgrade for me. I’d recently started another playthrough and just completed Act 1. That’ll now go on hold until late August.

    • I’ll possibly wait with my act 1 or 2 save until Directors Cut Edition as other players as well. Maybe it is also a good idea to get Pulse 3D audio headphones for PS5

  • pooptrashbucket

So does our save file transfer or what? I bought the deluxe edition at release but didn’t start playing it until last night of course, and I don’t want to waste my time if I have to replay everything again once this releases. Also, 30 bucks on top of the 70 I already spent, just for DualSense features, lip sync and an expansion that we don’t even know how long it is, is a bit much. It should be a 20 dollar upgrade just like the PS4 version. Why are we being punished for giving you guys 500 bucks for a new console?

  • GoldenGotGame – you’re being unreasonable. You (we) paid $60 a year ago. For a year, we got to enjoy the game. Then we got a FREE update in the fall that added even more value to the game.

You being “cheap, whining or poor” appears to be precisely the issue. Nobody that bought this game already should be crying about this – ESPECIALLY those of us that enjoyed the game A YEAR AGO.

Even if someone just bought the game for $30, they shouldn’t be complaining because they come out even – and if they play on PS5, they actually come out ahead by $10.

At what point would you not complain? You are upset because SP ADDED features that don’t exist on PS4 (which means development time)? You’re complaining about $10 to enjoy a better version of the game? It would be one thing if the $10 was just about resolution, frame rate and loading on PS5 – but those features were already added, for free mind you, last fall. Everything else in the $10 is NEW. We should absolutely pay for their effort. Your one-time investment a year ago isn’t some pass that buys you free support for the life of the game. You entered a contract for what was included at the time of that release. They were gracious enough to add more value to the game later that year at no additional cost to us.

If you don’t want to pay, fine – that’s always someone’s choice. But let’s not be ridiculous and cry because a SP is asking for some money to support the work they’ve put into a game they released a year ago.

I’m sorry, but people with the mindset that because they paid for something a year ago who think they should get all improvements and additions for free (or whatever cheap price) are a massive pet peeve.

And nobody is being punished. You supported SP’s development of this expansion and the improvements by purchasing the game a year ago. And because people are buying the game again or the expansion — we are ensured to get a sequel. It’s all about perspective and your’s seems kind of crappy.

  • I *loved* this game and I don’t disagree with there being an additional charge for the expansion… What I *do* disagree with is the fact that someone who is a first-time buyer can get the Director’s Cut (which, obvs, includes the expansion) for the same price that I paid as a Day 1 buyer. Why is their investment less than mine? Shouldn’t they’re investment be equal?

  • I completely support the price of the Director’s Cut upgrade but I do NOT support you charging an extra 10 bucks for PS5 support which should be included in the DC upgrade.

  • LessThanXer0_13

I don’t agree having to pay $10 for a PS5 upgrade.. does seem nickel and dimming. I guess I’ll just wait for it to go on sale for a reasonable price.

  • If i buy this games for PS5 at 70$ will i also get PS4 version of the game or only PS5 version?

  • Why do I need to pay to upgrade it from PS4 to PS5 Sony? I am not doing this and I am sorry for is going to do it.

  • Yes! Can’t wait

  • This is really disappointing that you have to pay to upgrade to the ps5 version. I understand paying for the expansion, but the upgrade from ps4 to ps5 should be free like Doom Eternal was.

    • I agree. Paying for what is basically a resolution increase and some performance tweaks is ridiculous, especially when we already own the game! Could you imagine buying a game on PC and then having to pay if you wanted to play it at 4k60fps instead of 1440p30fps, or having to pay for patches that improve game performance?… Microsoft is adding free next-gen enhancements for games they didn’t even make! Yet Sony are charging their most enthusiastic customers even more money… Pathetic!

  • Can’t believe the comments in here “I’m paying $30 for lip sync”

    Try reading the entire post.

Complaining about the price?… don’t buy it or the PS4 version which is only $20.

The PS5 version not only comes with full 4k at 60fps but new story DLC trophies, and more upcoming content.

If it was on the store I would have already upgraded. The game was amazing and I can’t wait to play it again.

$19.99 new content will get you the PS4 version
$29.99 gets you the PS5 version and all the new content.

    • No they can read. The issue isn’t the content. It’s that they have the balls to charge and extra $10 for the privilege of playing it on the PS5.

Meanwhile games like Borderlands 3, AC; Valhalla, Doom, Destiny, FF7 Remake, Nioh 2, No Mans Sky and a bunch more all offered free upgrades improving performances between 60 to 120 depending on title, adding 4K with either dynamic or HDR. Yet I have to spend $10 extra for the upgrade because…….

  • Ouch.
Kinda sucks for those of us that bought the Collector’s Edition which should be the directors cut anyway.
Don’t mind the 20$ expansion but the extra $10 for ps5 upgrades 8n top is a bit much.
Should be 20$ max and maybe even 10$ for those that bought the Collector’s Edition to begin with..
But I’ll personally probably just wait til it goes on sale, especially since I can play my ps4 version at 60 fps on my ps5.
$10-$20 I would have been a day 1 buyer but at $30. I personally can wait.. but to each their own.

  • I’m sorry, but it feels like you really stepped in it Sucker Punch. $15USD for the upgrade (just one price) and $50 USD for PS5, $40 for PS4. And watch the gamers praise you.

  • So… wait. Not only are you telling me that we can’t even upgrade to the PS5 version for free without the Director’s cut DLC… BUT WE CAN’T EVEN GET THE JAPANESE LIP SYNCS IN THE PS$ VERSION EITHER?! WHAT KIND OF BS SENSE IS THAT?! It just makes no sense to begin with! Square was able to do that with Kingdom Hearts 3 and that’s been a multiplatform title! I can understand stuff like the haptic feedback and whatnot being PS5 features, but having proper lip syncing for the Japanese voiceovers limited to the PS5 release is SO DANG STUPID! So is making the whole upgrade a paid thing completely!

  • It all sounds good. I just hope they add some sort of dueling system so you can play duels endlessly. Like a competition of sorts, within the main game.

    • Agree…they should add a sort of mini-game,like a samurai who’s always training and you can go to him and duel whenever you want.Damn missed opportunity if they don’t do that.

  • While I am glad to see that an expansion is coming, but the the whole upgrade from PS4 to PS5 stinks. As a PS5 owner I am punished for owning a PS5 because you want to charge me extra for an upgrade whilst selling the expansion. I don’t buy games day one let alone full priced but Ghost of Tsushima was one of the few that I did and was worth the price. Your whole “for the players'” is utter nonsense and this comes off as anti-consumer. I’ll pick it up on a sale instead down the line. Hopefully you guys reverse course and simply let PS5 owners purchase the expansion and ditch the whole pay us $10 extra because you’re playing on a newer system.

  • I have the Digital Deluxe Edition, I still have to pay $29.99 to upgrade it to Director’s Cut for PS5?

    • Yep.

I’m not doing it. I’d be willing to pay $10 for the PS5 upgrade alone because they’ve made it clear they’re trying to charge $70 for next gen instead of $60 like Xbox. But not gonna be forced into buying DLC on top of it.

Not after they lied about the preorder process last year and it took me 2 weeks of living at my computer to finally score a PS5, only for them to nickel and dime us on next gen updates that Xbox gives for free. No way. Fool me once, shame on you; fools me twice, shame on me.

  • Greedy!!

  • I’m fine with having to pay more because it’s new content but why do I have to be punished because I own a different system?

  • I have the physical copy and paid for the Deluxe Edition upgrade via PSN. Guessing it will still be an extra $20?

    • Yeah just make sure if you get a PS5 to get the disc version or you’ll have no way to play. Not sure if you could even buy the full game on the same account after buying the upgrade. This PS4/PS5 upgrade stuff is so confusing.

  • Now this is unexpected, was pretty sure that because of Legends you guys wouldn’t do any story DLC,damn gonna drag me again to the game when I already had other plans, damn you SP not fair lol.Hmm so $20 for the Director’s Cut which is pretty much the DLC,not bad…not sure if I pre-order or wait to get it in disc, gonna try to calm down the hype but anyway just to be sure there will be a physical Director’s Cut for PS4 right?…not just digital?…I couldn’t care less about the recycled version for PS5.

I wonder if y’all added an option to sell leather and steel. Please SP that needs to be added, there’s literally no reason for not allowing leather and steel to be sold…there are people who actually like to explore this beautiful world you created you know instead of rushing and fast travel the hell outta the game.

PS:Big yay for option to hide the quiver, that was needed…kinda like the option to hide those horrible headpieces on Horizon was needed haha.

  • Pay up, chumps

  • Will the upgrade for the original PS4 release to PS5 director’s cut for $30 also upgrade for the PS4 version to director’s cut? I haven’t been able to buy a PS5 yet, and it would kinda suck to have to spend $50 total to get the director’s cut to play on both systems eventually.

  • Well since it was/is called directors cut I was hopping it would’ve fixed my biggest issue with the game. The inability to fight “as the ghost” during duals or bosses. You spend so much time choosing how you want to play during regular play, but can only fight “Honorably” during all one on one fights? Sorry if I missed that there was a story element to that, but it’s seemed like a direct contradiction to all the other gameplay choices. Would’ve made the ‘last Dual’ that more impactful too if you had that choice during actual combat, and the character your fighting against is expressing his disappointment or approval for the way your choosing to fight. Honorable or without honor.

  • You know what Sony needs to leave ps4 generation behind and move on if ya don’t have a ps5 oh well too bad I’m kinda selfish I want my ps5 games only on ps5 screw you ps4 players idc you people that are still on ps4 are getting the lesser versions while ps5 players get faster load times 60FPS ray tracing dual sense features 3D audio etc

  • Everything is looking fine except sony doubling down on pc ports… buys a studio nixessoftware known for pc ports.. if sony continues this pursuit for that extra chi-ching everytime , i guess at present it bodes well but further down the line sony WILL lose hardcore sony fans as i love the concept of having exclusives and i am pretty sure many playstation fans do tooo.. No successful company shares their secret sauce.. may it be apple, google…certain things will never be provided by them on any other platform… i hope sony stops this …I know a the words of a single fan like me won’t matter though….

  • Where can I pre order? PS Store does not have it yet

  • Well so your telling me that
If we don’t have the game yet
We can buy it for 70$ on ps5 and get everything new with the base game
So technically it’s just 10$ more than the base game price.
But if i have the game on my ps4
Then i must pay 20$ more and another 10$ more if i want it on both ps4&5

I’m saying it’s not fair for the ones who preordered the base game on ps4
I paid 60$ for it and now i must pay 30$ more to get it on ps5
But anyone else who didn’t preordered it on ps4
Can have everything for 70$ just 10$ more on the base game price .

Pls it’s not fair let the people who preordered the base game on ps4 get the director’s cut for 10$ only.

  • If Iki Island content is good I’ll gladly pay 20$ for it.
But charging 10$ for Ps4 to Ps5 upgrade is so GREEDY!!!
    Shame on you Sony!

  • Please explain why it’s 59.99 on PS4 and 69.99 on PS5? So extra 10 dollars to unlock framerate and bump up the res?

  • ryuksrottenapple

    helllooo

  • The upgrade price is outrages.
I don’t mind to pay for the DLC but the extra 10 euro is a money grab. Arrogant Sony is back and I hope Xbox will grow more powerful as it brings back Sony to a more consumer friendly company.
So no update or DLC for me until the total price comes down to 20 euro.

    • Yeah I’m glad I have both Series X and PS5. Xbox has Smart Delivery so any game I bought on OG Xbone I get free with all next gen upgrades on Series X. I confess I read articles that said Sony will charge for upgrades, but then heard they’d released free PS5 patches for other games, so I thought that’s how it was. But now I got burned on this. Bought on PS5 recently and they want $10 for 4K. Ridiculous. I’ll be buying all my multiplatform on Xbox and will hold off on buying anymore PS4 games that don’t have a PS5 version so they don’t trick me again.

  • Just make the upgrade from PS4 To PS5 free and charge £20/$20 to play the new expansion.

  • Paying $20 for new DLC content is no problem at all, but an extra $10 for upgrade from PS4 to PS5 is iffy.

In my case, I’ll be paying $30 for the DLC + upgrade but only because I really appreciated the free Legends DLC.

  • Must say that I’m a little frustrated that I must pay again for the full PS5 support when I only just purchased the PS4 version recently to use on my PS5. Feel like I’m losing out due to timing that wrong!

    • Same here. Within last couple of weeks. So much for the “sale” price. Feels like a bait and switch.

  • THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR!

I have held off from playing the game ever since I knew the PS5 was a thing. I told myself ima wait till it’s on the PS5 proper, and by god…THE TIME HAS COME!!! Man I’m so pumped!

    • You were smart. I’m used to Xbox Smart Delivery free upgrades. I didn’t know they’d make me pay for an upgrade even though I bought the digital version on a PS5. Live and learn. Won’t buy anymore PS4 games unless they have a PS5 version.

  • Love the Playstation brand since PS1. Kind of think Sony step on themselves with this one. They should have simply priced the Directors cut at $20 and FREE upgrade to PS5 through Oct 31 (or something). And THEN they could’ve added the $10 PS5 upgrade.

    • Great idea. They keep penalizing early adopters and I’m tired of it. Xbox has smart delivery and your purchase on any Xbox means you get all the versions free. So much easier than having to look up articles for which version of Spider-Man to buy because there were multiple upgrade pathways, for example. Or this mess. I just bought GoT last week or 2. Guess I won’t be buying any more PS4 games that don’t have a PS5 version so I don’t get burned again like this.

  • To all the people confused by the pricing for the PS5 upgrade, it’s really quite simple:

Sony has decided that first party games on PS5 cost $70. Games on PS4 still cost $60. If they allowed people to buy the game for $60 on PS4, and then simply upgrade for free to the PS5 version, then nobody would ever pay the $70 that Sony have decided games are worth on PS5.
The third party games that allow free upgrades, are games that cost the same on PS4 and PS5. There is no need to charge extra, because it doesn’t matter which gen you buy it for money wise.
I’m not saying that I agree with the Sony price hike on PS5, since there isn’t any valid justification for it, but when you think about it, the confusing pricing structure of the edition makes sense. You pay the normal price for the content + $10, which is par for the course for PS5 games vs. PS4 games.

    • I see what you’re saying for people buying it today. But many people bought the full PS4 game for $60. Now if they got a PS5, they’ll end up paying $90 to play the original game on PS5 vs someone buying it today for $70. If their systems don’t allow a way to price by account (so people who paid full price get a lower price on the upgrade) they should do a limited-time free PS5 upgrade so their early adopters aren’t penalized.

  • Typical millennials complaining about paying for stuff lol 😂 keep crying gen z’s

    • This has nothing to do with millennials or Gen Z. Honestly don’t think you know the difference between the two.

This is a PS4 game. I’m willing to pay for a remastered title in full on PS5, but 70 dollars is a bit extreme. Especially for a game that I’ve already platinumed and nearly finished the raid and NG+ on already. Even for new comers I feel like 60 dollars would have been fine 50 would have been preferred. They are right to complain. This isn’t Returnal or Ratchet and Clank where the game was built from the ground up and actually utilizes the technology.

Things like “The game loads faster” is kind of silly for a game that already loaded fast in the first place.

  • “$69.99 USD on PS5 and $59.99 USD on PS4. ”

    This is unacceptable.

I get it, you think 3D Audio, Some Controller Updates, and a handful of rendering pipeline adjustments some how entitle you to an extra 10 bucks.

I own GoT in disc form on PS4. I love the game to death, I’d certainly would love a PS5 tailored version in disc form as well. However you’re clearly just taking advantage of me at this point over some DLC and minor updates. I’m not a fan of this. I’ll wait on the 10 bucks. Which sucks that I have to put my principles at odds with my desire to play this.

I’m willing to cross this line for first time purchases of PS5 exclusive titles that were built from the ground up to utilize the hardware. I’m only willing to put up with that for the first couple of years. By 2024, games better be 60 bucks again baring bouts of inflation which are a very real possibility at the moment. I’ll be surprised if games aren’t 80 dollars by then.

Please fix this. You’re basically giving us a remastered GOTY with extra DLC. Not Ratchet and Clank A Rift Apart or Ghost of Tsushima 2 exclusively for PS5.

  • I thought 2K was greedy.
    I had a Borderlands 3 ps4 disk and I got PS5 features for free.

  • vicioussolutions

When announced you said it would be a free upgrade to ps5! Why are you back tracking on this and charging $9.99? Glad to pay for DLC, but why say it would be a free upgrade in the first place??

  • Yet another paid upgrade… Sigh

  • I appreciate all the Legends content and frame rate improvements you added to this game previously for free. I understand charging this time for the expansion dlc and other improvements. I just wish you had done it like Square Enix did with FF7 Remake and didn’t charge for the PS5 upgrade portion.

  • ….trailer ends on PRE-ORDER NOW… but i can’t pre-order it anywhere ?

    Am i missing something ?

  • Might just be overthinking it, but if I have the PS4 disc version on my PS5 and upgrade to directors cut, will it still have the haptic feedback ability and other PS5 features even though I am still running the PS4 disc version?

  • I’m so confused. I wanted to play this game on PS4 this weekend.

I don’t currently own it, and the only thing I’m seeing on the PS Store is the Director’s Cut pre-order.

How can I play the PS4 version now? Am I forced to buy the pre-order?
