Hermen Hulst Q&A: What’s Next for PlayStation Studios

Head of PlayStation Studios shares insight into what’s to come.

It’s been just about 17 months since Hermen Hulst took the reins of PlayStation Studios, the international network of world-class development studios that produce some of PlayStation’s biggest hits — from Returnal and Astro’s Playroom to The Last of Us Part II, Dreams, Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart and much, much more.

Over our jam-packed 20-minute discussion, Hulst provided updates on a host of topics: studio development updates, thoughts on PS5 and PS4 development, PlayStation Studios’ vision for PC releases, and a whole lot more.

Listen to our full interview on the Official PlayStation Podcast here, or read on for some key excerpts, edited for brevity and clarity.

PlayStation.Blog: Do you see single-player, narrative games as essential to the PlayStation Studios console experience?

Hermen: Absolutely. Single-player, narrative-driven games — that’s our DNA. PlayStation Studios have made, in my mind, some of the most memorable narrative experiences available. We love making them, and we’ll keep making them as long as gamers enjoy them. For me, the idea of sitting down on a Friday night with a brand-new world, and a great story to explore — that sounds pretty perfect, right?

We also want to make sure that we’re creating a variety of experiences for our audiences. Franchises, new IP, big games, smaller and more innovative games, single-player stories, and multiplayer. Who says that multiplayer experience cannot have great stories, right?

PSB: We’ve seen the announcement of Haven, from Jade Raymond as well as a bunch of industry veterans. And more recently Firewalk, which also has some top names from the industry.

How do you see partnerships like these fitting into the larger PlayStation Studios vision?

Hermen: Yeah. You know, these partnerships are very exciting. You could, I guess, make a distinction between development teams who are part of Sony — like Naughty Dog, Insomniac, Media Molecule, Sucker Punch, and so on — and then development teams who are working with us like partners… Haven, Firewalk, but also teams we’ve worked with over years, like Kojima Productions, From Software.

To me, in many ways, there really is no difference. They’re all PlayStation Studios. We are, at the end of the day, a creator-led organization. Which to me means that we want to find the best possible development studios in the world and help them passionately pursue their ideas.

To me, it’s important that PlayStation Studios is a place that allows creators to join us and do the best work of their career. That’s really what I’m after.

….

PSB: Are you able to give us a snapshot of the total number of titles that PlayStation Studios are currently developing for PS4 or PS5?

Hermen: Well, we have a lot going on right now. PlayStation Studios have more than 25 titles in development. Almost half of these are new IP. The other half, they’re titles that are set in franchises that PlayStation fans already know and love. So, it’s quite a lot.

PSB: How important is new IP for PlayStation Studios?

Hermen: New IP is incredibly important to us. New IP is the lifeblood of gaming. But, new IP is just one aspect of our strategy. Ultimately, I want PlayStation Studios to be fiercely daring, to take risks. I want us to continue to embrace the legacy of PlayStation, pushing the boundaries of gaming, keep making games that matter. Games that, probably, wouldn’t have been made anywhere else.

And you know, Bend Studio is working on a very exciting new IP that they’re very, very passionate about. They’re building on the deep open-world systems that they developed with Days Gone. So I’m really happy for Bend Studio.

PSB: How have the teams at PlayStation Studios been able to cope and adapt with these big challenges over the last year?

Hermen: Perhaps the biggest challenge has been when we need specialist locations, often physical locations. Primarily performance capture, audio work. We’ve come up with some really clever solutions to some of this, we built tiny recording studios in people’s houses.

But when you’re doing performance capture for a lot of cinematics, with multiple actors — that’s not so simple to solve. So you’ve got a choice. You could do it later in the schedule, which could cause you problems. Or you could risk the final quality by doing it in a different way.

But I can tell you, we’re not going to risk the quality. We want to ship extremely high quality games, finished games, and we have to do that obviously without pushing our teams to the breaking point.

So we have, currently, two very big, very narrative-driven games in development: Horizon Forbidden West and the next God of War. And for both of those, they’re frankly affected by access to performance capture and talent. For Horizon, we think we are on track to release this holiday season. But that isn’t quite certain yet, and we’re working as hard as we can to confirm that to you as soon as we can.

And for God of War, the project started a little later. So we’ve made the decision to push that game out to next year, to ensure that Santa Monica Studio can deliver the amazing God of War game that we all want to play.

With these things, something’s gotta give. It cannot be the quality of our titles, and it surely won’t be the health or the wellbeing of our amazing team.

PSB: How does PS4 factor into PlayStation Studios’ development vision? Is it still a focus internally for future game development?

Hermen: It very much is. You can’t build a community of over 110 million PS4 owners and then just walk away from it, right? I think that’d be bad news for fans of PS4, and frankly not very good business.

Where it makes sense to develop a title for both PS4 and PS5 — for Horizon Forbidden West, the next God of War, GT7 — we’ll continue looking at that. And if PS4 owners want to play that game, then they can. If they want to go on and play the PS5 version, that game will be there for them.

That being said, it’s also very important to have showpieces for PS5, hence the development of Returnal and Ratchet that are exclusive to PS5.

PSB: [How does] PC fit into the worldview of PlayStation Studios moving forward?

Hermen: We’re still early on in our planning for PC. And Horizon Zero Dawn has been very successful. I think it shows there’s an appetite from gamers outside the PlayStation ecosystem to experience the amazing portfolio of games that PlayStation fans have enjoyed for years.

But I want to emphasize that PlayStation will remain the best place to play our PlayStation Studios titles at launch. But we do value PC gamers, and we’ll continue to look at the right times to launch each game. Bend Studio just released the PC version of Days Gone on May 18. So that’s about two years after the PS4 release.

And I hope that a new set of fans can and will enjoy that title. And that’s the goal — we want to reach new gamers who haven’t yet experienced the great stories, characters, and worlds that we’ve built. Releasing games on PC will not come ever at the expense of building an exciting lineup of great console games.

PSB: Another topic that’s been out there recently is Japan. Do you feel that, from the PlayStation Studios perspective, that Japan is still a big focus for development? Or are you maybe considering a shift to a more Western focus for game development?

Hermen: Oh no, I want to be very clear that Japanese games and Japanese talent remain extremely important to PlayStation Studios and to Sony Interactive Entertainment. Japan and Asia are strongly associated with our legacy: the success of Sony, the PlayStation brand, and many of our iconic PlayStation franchises were actually born in that region.

I remember watching the PlayStation 5 Showcase event from last year. It struck me how much Japanese influence there was in the games that we showed. And what a key part of PlayStation’s DNA that is. It’s one of the things that makes PlayStation different, unique in my mind.

I know the potential from high-quality games from Japan and Asia, and some of the best development talent in the world is found there. They have that history of innovation, of craftsmanship and skill, that pride and team spirit. We very much want to continue those traditions.

Polyphony Digital is such an important part of the PlayStation family, making the best driving simulation games in the world. We’re building Team Asobi in Tokyo, a world-class studio that are developing a franchise for all ages with global appeal. Such a creative team.

And alongside Asobi, we will continue to maintain and build partnerships through our external development team. So I’m really excited about the future of PlayStation games from Japan, and Asia. And I’m grateful for the interest and passionate support for our Japanese teams.

PSB: Great to know. And perhaps this is a redundant question, but it seems like maybe we haven’t seen the last of Astro Bot?

Hermen: I hope not! I love that guy.

  • First; Thanks Sony for 26 fantastic years of PlayStation gaming.
I which you best of luck with your future plans.

I wish you would have been this honest before the launch of the PS5. I wouldn’t bought the PS5 if I knew this info.
Why? Not because PC/PS4 gamers are getting to play PS5 games. No. Because I did not need to buy the PS5 as I already own a PC and a PS4 Pro. I could still enjoy the PS5 games on my PC (or PS4)! :)

My concerns for the future of PlayStation:
The price for a PS5 game in 80 – 90 us dollars (the cost for Sony titles in my country, standard version).
The cost for a PC game is lower, sometimes half the price of a PS5 game from Sony.
The PC port/version will be the best version (performance etc) and most likely feature all dlc content.
No need for PS Plus anymore (online is free on PC).
You will now develop for another platform, which means less development for new potenitial PS4/PS5 games.
Cross gen game development in 2022? Wow! The good old PS4 will be on its 9th year in 2022…
Your main focus is consoles? I don’t agree. Poor support for PS4 first party games on PS5 (no patch for Horizon Zero Dawn, but a PC release?), PS5 OS is not the best (still poor stability and very slow)
and no support for internal ssd’s and other features (vrr and 1440p support etc).

Why should i buy a PS5 game, instead of waiting a year or two for the superior experience on PC? I can wait, no problem. :)

The PS5 / XBox Series generation; the console generation that never started…

    • I don’t wish them luck at all but I agree 100%, if they had released this before the gen I wouldn’t have wasted money on the ScamStation5 either. Its just a console to play overpriced and inferior versions of timed exclusive. They released a half assed console with barebones features compared to the Series X, and the few decent features they do have will never be taken advantage of because of cross gen and PC. These fools have definitely given up on consoles and PC is the new focus.

  • Love PlayStation. For my first question, will there ever be a new Sly Cooper 5 for the PlayStation 5? Or any remastered version of Sly Cooper?

  • Thank you for the article. Now I have 0 reasons to buy PS5. I will just wait for PC versions of PS games. Because, why pay $70 when you can wait and get the same game cheaper on a PC with better graphics?

    • Lucky, I already got scammed into buying the ps5 :(. First time I’ve ever regretted buying a PS console after owning every other one.

  • God of War II (the 2007 PS2 game) was a brilliant game even though it was made for the PS2 instead of the then next-gen PS3. I don’t remember people saying that the game was being “held back” back then. Cross-gen is something that happens every time new consoles are released, and is just something people have to accept because it’s not going to change. I’ll be enjoying the next God of War and Horizon Forbidden West on my base PS4 and when the PS5 Slim is out I’ll consider upgrading then. Letting more people play a game by releasing older games like Horizon Zero Dawn and Days Gone on PC is also a good thing. Games like the first Mass Effect game and the original Dead Rising were once Microsoft exclusives but were later released on PlayStation consoles as well, so PlayStation users benefit from exclusives going multiplatform as well. It’s not a one-sided arrangement. Star Wars: Republic Commando is another former Microsoft exclusive that just got a PS4 version recently.

  • So what’s the point of having a ps5? Releasing on the ancient ps4 hardware literally limits the next gen capabilities of the ps5 game, since all features need to run the same on both. Basically the ps5 is just for upgraded graphics, pathetic. There’s what maybe 3 ps5 exclusive games so far?

    • There is zero point in owning a PS5. Wait for PC Ports since that seems to be their top priority now.

  • Man I really wish they actually read these comments. Then they’d realize how stupid they look. Damage has been done already though unfortunately :( The future of PlayStation doesn’t look bright at all

  • They didn’t even need Zenimax or Square. I doubt square is for sale anyway. Regardless of that though they still have the best studios by far. All they had to do was not be greedy idiots and they failed to do that. If they’d done what worked in the PS4 gen and doubled down on it, PS5 could’ve been the best console ever. You are right that they refuse to listen to us and instead choose to listen to people that have refused to support them. Such a sad, willfully ignorant and disrespectful management….

  • I don’t know how he had the gall to say “PlayStation will remain the best place to play our PlayStation Studios titles at launch”, as if that means anything!?! Its the only place to at launch because these games are nothing but glorified timed exclusives. Such a slap in the face to long time fans that made this brand what it is. “Pay us $70/€80 to play a game that will look and run better on a competitive platform for only $50”. How is that good business? I feel your regret man, $500 down the drain I could’ve used towards a 3080 or 6800xt and just pirated their games a few years later.

  • I’d rather have God of War delayed than turn into a fished, broken pike of crap. I’m still finding very few reasons to purchase a PS5, and Sony wanting to now cater to the PC community isn’t helping. How many resources and manpower will go to the pc versions when everything should be focused on the PlayStation community?

    • unfinished*

    • Right, waste of valuable time and resources that could go towards improving the actual PlayStation community’s experience. He says “we do value PC gamers”. Give me a break, your duty is to PLAYSTATION not PC!

  • They had all the pieces to succeed but they threw it away for scraps. Imagine tarnishing your legacy for those pitiful sales of HZD and Days Gone. No more than 50 million combined in revenue….which is nothing for a company that made 22 billion last year. Stain on the company is an understatement, they’re more like a giant scar that will never properly heal.

  • I wish they would actually listen to us, the real fans instead of the Xbox/PC community. The only people that are OK with this move are your biggest competitors and the ones that want to see you fail. Seriously have no idea what’s wrong with this administration.

  • Today Phil Spencer attacked you guys for not releasing games to PC day 1. If you guys fall for this bait then I have lost all faith in you. He is coaxing you into following his terrible strategy because he knows it would be the end of you. If Xbox wasn’t owned by Microsoft they would’ve shutdown in 2016 under his stupid leadership. There is only 1 proper response to his ignorant comments and that is to do the exact opposite and cease the PC ports immediately. It has done literally zero good for Xbox last gen so I’ve no idea why you think it would help you in any way in the long term. Listen to your long time fans not the poor excuse of a competitor that wants to see you fail.

  • Let Days Gone be the final port to PC. If you put Uncharted 4 on there that would be the final nail in the coffin and officially the end of the PlayStation legacy as we know it. Stop this before its too late. Think about what you lose in the long term and how this affects your image. PC is NOT the future, PlayStation 5 is the future, have faith in yourselves and in the fanbase that have supported you for decades. You have the power to make people switch to your platforms, moving to other platforms is admitting defeat.

    • tlou 2 showed sony that they’re about 20 years too early for fake woke BS. they’ve comitted to fake woke bs, they aren’t turning back now. so they will make up their losses on PC. all of their games now, will be flashy unrewarding easy 10 hr experiences that cost £70 noone is going to buy them.

  • whats next?

Step 1 fake wokeness above all else.
Step 2 short overpriced games very few people will ever bother buying.
Step 3 watch as the oldest fans keep their wallets closed.

  • When will we start seeing Sony PC exclusives?

Sony is a joke. PlayStation sucks. 👎

I keep giving them the benefit of the doubt, then I keep reading stuff like this. I’m just about done with this brand. It’s not the same. If people want to play PlayStation games they should buy a PlayStation console. It’s as simple as that. That’s why everyone chose PlayStation over the competition. Exclusives were the only reason to own a PlayStation.

    #SAVEPLAYSTATION
    #MAKEPLAYSTATIONGREATAGAIN

    • I agree man these guys have lost the plot

    • Sony used to make loads of PC exclusives (mostly MMORPGS). During the PS3 era they produced more than Microsoft.

Then they shut their PC development side.

  • Since it’s the season.. I just have to say. I miss PlayStation conferences. They used to bring so much excitement. All of the best games and hardware were shown at them. I doubt we’ll ever have amazing showcases like this in person again.. at least that’s how it feels. Looking at the 2016 E3 PlayStation conference being the peak of it. I just wish those types of shows could exist still. That and PSX. Never was able to go but they were so cool and kept us in the loop between E3’s. Fast forwarding to 2021 and we haven’t even heard of an E3 State of Play showcase. I know we had gotten Ratchet & Clank recently which is cool, same with Horizon. I just really miss the showmanship and thrill of an hour+ long showcase once or twice a year. Made me feel excited for what was to come. Feels like that magic was lost. Just wish it could happen again.

  • Jim Ryan in a recent interview said, “The thinking here is that our IP portfolio is in such a strong state right now, it seems perverse to restrict enjoyment of it to our existing PlayStation community.” SERIOUSLY WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THIS IDIOT?!? PLEASE SOMEONE AT SONY GET RID OF THIS CLOWN IMMEDIATELY. Good lord……

  • Did my message get deleted?? I swear I posted it here. Just said that I miss PlayStation having a showcase during E3 and I miss the showmanship they would bring. Said I miss PSX also. I know it was in this thread and I know it posted. So weird it’s suddenly missing.

  • please new update system software ps4 PS5 8.55

  • Hi, I want to leave my first comment about this article. If Hermen Hulst is saying Japan is important for PlayStation then why PlayStation is censoring Japanese games and making leaves these studios of Japan to other platforms? PlayStation is losing the best. Japanese games make money for you but if you keep that privacy policy of censuring Japanese games. Developers, Japanese studios and people like us will leave PlayStation. That is why I’m disappointed with PlayStation and doing this to us after much years. Unfair and disappointed :(

  • So the game “Abandoned” or whatever it will be called was advertised for months as a PS5 Exclusive….and now the devs on twitter practically confirmed it will be on PC as well. WTH is going on with PlayStation? Seriously ? Please explain. Oh and btw I took a look at the reviews of days gone and horizon on steam and most of them are just saying “thank god I didn’t have to play this on the garbage PS4 !”. These are the people you claim to value? This is how you want your games and console represented? You guys are ok with people trashing the console that brought you so much success? Stop the Ports, save PlayStation before its too late.

  • When the entire gaming community, Xbox fans, Nintendo fans, and PC fans are laughing at PlayStation games being ported to PC, you know it’s a terrible move. Still cant figure out why you chose to destroy the legacy, no one will switch from PC to PS5 because of ports, they just laugh at Sony for being such idiots.
