PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita Will Continue Operations

Players will be able to continue to purchase games on PS3 and PS Vita.

Recently, we notified players that PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita devices was planned to end this summer.

Upon further reflection, however, it’s clear that we made the wrong decision here. So today I’m happy to say that we will be keeping the PlayStation Store operational for PS3 and PS Vita devices. PSP commerce functionality will retire on July 2, 2021 as planned.

When we initially came to the decision to end purchasing support for PS3 and PS Vita, it was born out of a number of factors, including commerce support challenges for older devices and the ability for us to focus more of our resources on newer devices where a majority of our gamers are playing on. We see now that many of you are incredibly passionate about being able to continue purchasing classic games on PS3 and PS Vita for the foreseeable future, so I’m glad we were able to find a solution to continue operations.

I’m glad that we can keep this piece of our history alive for gamers to enjoy, while we continue to create cutting-edge new game worlds for PS4, PS5, and the next generation of VR.

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us – we’re always listening and appreciate the support from our PlayStation community.

  • Really glad you’ve reassessed the initial decision, guys! I’m still rocking games like RE5 and Drakengard 3 on my trusty slim PS3, and enjoying portable experiences I couldn’t have in any other handheld device, like playing RE2, Chrono Trigger and MGS Portable Ops on my OLED PS Vita. Many many thanks!

  • GREAT! BUT please don’t close it these in 2021 either! Keep them open for at least 100 years. Yes, 100 years I am asking for loyal customers who invested in PlayStation who should be able to enjoy their purchases for a lifetime. Also please update system software so when the battery dies in the system we can replace it without fear of being locked out of our purchases. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

  • What a wonderful news!! I feel good, no matter what, to be an owner of the ps vita. And I am trying to buy more ps1 classic games to the console.

Meanwhile I would like to see Silent Hill and MGS on the psn store. Please, would you consider to take this and another games for direct download for that gamers who does not have a Ps3?

    Thanks for your time.

  • Great decision and kudos for checking the pulse of the community!

  • Good decision Jimbo.

  • Thank God for Jim sterling.

  • Love and respect, the main problem is that it was even considered as an option to close the store, all games purchased should be online on the store forever. I really belive you guy’s need to streamline PS2/PS1 as backwards compatible for PS4/PS5 and get a few PS3 games base on community feedback on that list too. Its the Only way we can fully leave PS3 behind/retro behind, please let PS Vita Community live because you ended our support shortly the least you can do is let us have store access. Thanks for listening

  • Thanks for listening to your customers, Sony (and Jim :-)) This is good news, and frankly, an even better business decision that shows your support to your long-time customers.

  • It’s time for Sony to put backwards compatibility for the ps5 of ps2 and ps3. That would be something for the players!

  • Thank you so much for listening Jim. Even though I got the newer playstation consoles, I still play and buy games on and for my ps3. Past couple of days I’ve been playing infamous. This is literally the best news I have ever received.

The only other thing is, since the ps3 and vita stores are staying open will there be some type of update to fix the glitches and bugs in the stores?

  • “On reflection” You mean because the backlash from social media was so massive and destruction that you didnt have a choice. You cant kill an entire generation of content without backlash.

  • Thank you very much Mr Ryan. Can we please have the fix for the CMOS battery and some much needed sales on ps3 and vita stores? …thanks again

  • “we’re always listening and appreciate the support from our PlayStation community.”

    Backwards compatibility please.

  • Thank YOU!!!!!!!

  • I have to say I did not expect this. But I’m very pleased by the decision to reverse the store closures. Good on you, Sony.

  • Coooooooooooooooooooooool

  • Thank you! That’s a great decision!

In fact I may just celebrate and buy some classic games for my ps3.

  • So are we really serious with the lack of refunds for purchases made during the time in which we thought the store was to be shut down?

  • this makes me happy. I haven’t smiled like this in weeks.

  • Yaaaaay! Congrats PlayStation Family!

  • Thank (bleep)! Sony earning back those Brownie points.

  • Was hoping you would have a big sale before closing the store. You should have a huge sale for PS3 owners to celebrate!

  • If your listening where is vrr and 1440p support for ps5

  • Great news Jim, I think that the love for legacy playstation games shows you that there can be benefits to being PS1, 2 and 3 games over to PS5, everyone would get em, I’ve got tons of games downloaded for PS3, lots of PS1 Classics too that I’d love to continue on PS5

  • It’s like a huge load has been lifted off my chest. There are so many games I still have to play on my PS3 and Vita. I’m not yet ready to fully move on with PS4 and PS5 games just yet so this is very much appreciated Jim.

Now if we could get some sales on the PS3/Vita stores going from time to time that would be swell, we still need to buy a ton of content and buying it full price is just too heavy on the wallet when all the required content is considered.

  • This is the way

  • Thank you very much for letting the Store open. It’s awesome to get to Play some nice old Games. Greetings

  • Thank you for this. I’ve put a lot of time and money into building up my PS3 and Vita libraries and I had no desire to cut that short. The original decision was frustrating enough that I had resolved to move on to other pastures after exclusively buying Sony consoles and games for the past 25 years. But you did right by the fans so I’ll do my part in making your reversal worthwhile.

  • Thank you for listening. Hopefully we can get more backwards compatibility in the future at least for PS1/PS2 games.

  • Thank you for this. I still really love my Vita!

  • Thank you Jim and everyone involved in keeping gaming history alive! Now as a celebration, can we get a sale for all platforms rather than just PS4/PS5?

  • As other people have said before, it would be great to see some discounts on these legacy stores. There are a lot of titles i would buy at even modest sale prices.

  • Thank you for keeping gaming history alive. Please consider porting some of those games to newer consoles, and even bringing some other classics that never got a digital port over as well. Lunar 2, Nightshade, The Simpsons Game, etc. The games that cost a ton to get physical.

  • Thanks jim!!!!

  • Finalmente vou poder continuar a comprar os jogos que eu sempre quis no meu PsVita 😍😍

Muito obrigado Jim Ryan por tornar isso possível.

  • Fantastic stuff, thank you to everyone involved in this decision for listening.
Here’s hoping you guys can find a way to get these games working on PS5 now as that’d be awesome 😁

  • Thank you Mr Ryan, please fix the Cmos battery issue and start putting back sales for ps3 and vita stores.

  • Thank you Jim Ryan!

  • Losing the stores would’ve been a huge disgrace for the sake of keeping lots of games alive.
Now please, for the live of God, bring the stores back to browsers too!

  • You’d think that there will couple of hundred millions in sales in PS3 and Vita Games in the coming month…

  • Thank you so much. Not can you just bring the old store back or fix the bugs in the current one.

  • Thank you so much for listening to the people that been with you since the ps1.

  • Now all that’s needed is backward compatibility for PS1, 2 and 3 discs on PS5. Sony has already applied for the patents so why not make it a reality? If Microsoft can do it so can Sony. Also, offer all those games on the PS5 Store too – including PSP and Vita, of course – for those who don’t already have the physical versions. That’d be a great way to bring almost all the PlayStation ecosystem of games to people who never got the chance to try them.

  • Thanks for listening, Jim. I think this calls for a celebration. Like a mega-sale on PS3, PS Vita, PSP and PS Classic games on the PS3, PS Vita and PSP digital storefronts. If anything, this whole episode has put me in the frame of mind to pick up my old favorites while I still can. A sale would at least make that more affordable and prompt people like me to purchase more games.

Anyway, who knows how long this stay of execution will last, but thank you once again for buying the Vita and PS3 a little more time.

  • Funny how this post doesn’t even mention the developers who were about to be utterly hosed by the decision to close the Vita store. This is good news for them more so than the player, in my opinion. The fact that Sony was still selling dev kits for the Vita last month despite knowing that this was coming is incredibly gross.

  • So will this mean I’ll still be able to buy PSP and Playstation 1 games for my PSP if I use a PS3 or a Vita?

  • Good. This was as short sighted decision that never should have happened. Now, figure out a way to include this content into the PS5. There’s no reason why I can’t play the PS1 games I purchased on my newer consoles.

  • Thank you Jim for keeping Vita and PS3 alive :) please put out regular sales again and +1 for more device activation’s :) I am really hoping they will put some dev time in improving both store fronts going forward. I do miss the store website for PS3/Vita

  • Good choice.

  • Thank you, Jim! <3
