PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita Will Continue Operations

Players will be able to continue to purchase games on PS3 and PS Vita.

Recently, we notified players that PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita devices was planned to end this summer.

Upon further reflection, however, it’s clear that we made the wrong decision here. So today I’m happy to say that we will be keeping the PlayStation Store operational for PS3 and PS Vita devices. PSP commerce functionality will retire on July 2, 2021 as planned.

When we initially came to the decision to end purchasing support for PS3 and PS Vita, it was born out of a number of factors, including commerce support challenges for older devices and the ability for us to focus more of our resources on newer devices where a majority of our gamers are playing on. We see now that many of you are incredibly passionate about being able to continue purchasing classic games on PS3 and PS Vita for the foreseeable future, so I’m glad we were able to find a solution to continue operations.

I’m glad that we can keep this piece of our history alive for gamers to enjoy, while we continue to create cutting-edge new game worlds for PS4, PS5, and the next generation of VR.

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us – we’re always listening and appreciate the support from our PlayStation community.

  • Well done. But I still think you should put all that content on PS Now.

  • Are we gonna have the old store link working again since there is stuff I wanna pick up but don’t have the devices on me to access them?

  • While this is great news the fact that Sony is so out of touch that they decided to do it in the first place means they’re going to do it in the future. They don’t care and I don’t trust them anymore. There are other places and ways to buy games that mean I don’t have to worry about them becoming unplayable in a few years. For now though I’m glad the time and money I have invested with this brand is still worth something, if not much and not for long.

  • Thank you so much! I was really sad since the last announcement. Now I’m happy again.

  • Great now restart Vita games development or Vita 2. Thank You.

    • Kinda doubt we’ll be seeing a true Vita successor. But I wouldn’t mind a PS4 P(r)ortable that’s compatible with PSP and Vita titles (so PSX classics as well).

  • Thank you. I hope this is also true for the Japanese PSN store, since browsing over Japanese websites I’m not finding any news yet. But thank you for doing the right thing for game preservation’s sake.

    • It’s even possible that they never announced to close the store on the Japanese region, since PlayStation is a strong platform there, unlike Xbox. Remember that just recently did Sony cut support for (Slim) PS3s and PSPs in Japan, whereas they don’t cover repair costs here for years.

  • Thanks for keeping it open, Sony.

    RIP PSP though.

  • Although Jim has been a scapegoat for a lot of these troubling decisions as of late, this is something that is nothing but positive. As consumers we by games for a lifetime, sometimes more nowadays, not for use on one mere console cycle. We cherish these games, and the stories within them and would love to share them with our children and our children’s children! Now please consider putting more Sony exclusives like Bloodborne on PC. Don’t be afraid to sign off on new and creative products, and start laying the ground work for future game preservation with the PS5. Oh and that Ps4 problem with the battery is something that might want to be prioritized a little bit more!

  • This is a step in the right direction.
Please keep listening the community and keep in mind that retrogaming is important.
There is so much valuable media from past PlayStation consoles that deserves to be preserved (and enjoyed even during this generation: New and old games should co-exist)

    • Yeah I’d like my kids to be able to play the classic PS games when they’re old enough. Especially since so many new games are underwhelming

  • AWESOME!
Sure the sales may be down, but the option of ongoing support just adds to the perceived value of current and future PS consoles.
…and gives you time to make total backwards compatibility a thing. Still HUGE on my wishlist.

  • Now, it would be good if those games received discounts again, since they don’t go on sale for a loooong time. In Brazil, especially, where games raised up in price in accordance to dolla. There are some game that didn’t suffer such changes and I would be buying them eventually, like Jak & Daxter, Sly and some Ratchet & Clank. In any case, thanks for saving part of your legacy and listening to us.

  • I willing to bet that they changed that decision after alot of people start buying crap ton of games thinking it will be last chance to legally own those games. I bet those Sony’s suit realize they can still milk PS3,PSP, and PS Vita one more time.

  • How about bring back community’s to ps4. Hurry up and get Ps5 in stock I wanna play Returnal…

  • A big corporation actually admitting they made a huge mistake so they decided to rescind on it so they’re customers will be happy? I never thought I’d see the day!

  • Very cool!

  • YES! that is all

  • Awesome. I was disappointed when the ability to purchase from a web browser was removed, but at least this allows us to continue enjoying what’s on there. Thank you so much!

  • I want to buy ps one, ps2, psp, ps vita games digitally on my ps5, please let me.

  • Thank you, but if you want to close the store you have to find a way to make them purchasable and playable on PS4 and PS5. Ps1 and ps2 need an emulator on current gen like the Xbox sx.

  • Respect. Thank you for finding a solution and listening to fans.

  • Can PSP content still be purchased through the PS3 or Vita? This needs to be clarified.

  • Thank you for keeping the store open had everybody scared but guess what that scare tactic May everybody go spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars so it’s a win-win keep the store open and let the good times roll

  • Wow!

i still own a ps3 and vita system! i’m glad that Sony listen the community. I still have to save some money to purchase some ps3 and vita games. Playstation it’s a powerful brand with a lot of history! you could crush the competition with the backwards compatible alone because of the games since 1995!! Cmon sony you can do it!!! lets do it together!!!!

  • Sooo… gonna address the CMos battery (C Bomb) issue next for PS3, PS4, and PS5?

  • When are you going to do some sales again on PS3 and Vita… cause those will go a long way! Or at least allow the developers to drop/discount the games/dlc they want to. Cause a ton of DLC like Castlevania Lords of Shadow, Dungeon Siege 3, Bulletstorm etc I would be interested in purchasing for 5$… but not the 13.50$ CDN that is being asked for some of those.

  • 100% didn’t call on backtracking happening.

  • Yes! Thank you! I was devastated when the shutdown was announced, but my faith in PlayStation has been restored. I’m looking forward to getting lots of PS3 and Vita games in the future. PS5 and PS4 are great, but the past is important, too.

  • What about purchasing old to new gen avatars, themes, etc and being able to purchase european avatars (stuff we can’t buy in the US) as well using the PSN App? will that not be a thing anymore in the system or are you guys planning on recreating the app at least?

  • After all those depressing Sony news since a couple of months back, this positive one is truly smile worthy. :)

Realistically, this was of course purely a financial decision. Sony likely saw the large sales influx of people buying PS3 and Vita games while they could, saw the revenue stream and then changed their minds. But hey, atleast this decision was one that benefited us players.

  • Thank you Jim and team for reversing this decision. Despite me owning a PS4 pro and a ps5, my ps3 launch still gets a LOT of usage and I still regularly play and buy games. Same goes for my vita. I love my ps3 and vita. Thank you!

  • Thank you very much for continuing to support these platforms. Despite PS4 being primary device, both my old PS3-60’s and Vita are heavily enjoyed and very active weekly.

  • Thanks for listening!

    1440p output support next!

  • Why can’t you keep your history alive with some kind of backward compatibility options? I’ve tried PS Now, and while it’s fun for what it has, it doesn’t have much as far as the older generations are concerned.

You need to implement a new store that can support both the past and the future.

  • Thankyou. Yeah this is a good decision, hopefully next time when the time comes to shutting the stores down you’ll give gamers and developers a bigger timeframe to work on please Sony….but I think thats probably obvious really. Shame so many of the digital-only PS3 games are not on PS4 or BC but we accept that it is what it is.

  • This is a step on the right direction, but I would still like to see the issue with the cmos battery be addressed and resolved for us consumers. I want to hear something from Sony directly addressing it. We spent our money to purchase games and we should be able to play them as long as we want even after the battery dies or the servers get shut down in the future. There has to be a permanent solution for these issues with the consoles we’ve purchased.

  • Thank you I guess? This is something that should never have happened in the first place, we don’t ask much of you Mr Ryan, just stop making so much damage to the brand, this decision was a fine 1st step, the next one should be to lift the censorship and other restrictions on the Playstation platform.

    Please make Playstation great again!

  • Way to think about the gamers who keep the vintage scene alive.. Maybe don’t do this a third time though. It just never ends well and just makes everyone involved look silly.

  • Good to see sony is making the right choice by keeping the shops alive.

  • This is great news! I continue to play my ps3 and vita (maybe my favorite device ever) regularly, and I will continue to purchase games well into the future. It would be great to see sales on the ps3/vita storefront again, even if only once or twice a year or something. Finally, while Sony is in the giving mood and asking us to stay home, it would be really cool if they unlocked our ps+ games on the 2 older systems as a thank you for being loyal and sticking with Sony all these years :) Just a thought! Anyways, thanks for keeping these stores operational and thanks for the freebies this month (as a hydrophobic SubNautica was awesome yet terrifying!)

  • Thank you PlayStation!

This is a big relief. I still have many PS3 and Vita games on my wishlist.

Now if only you can figure out a way to support this legacy library on modern/future hardware.

  • Now fix the CMOS Battery bug on PS3/PS4 before it is too late.

  • Good! Game preservation is very important!

For me it is becoming more important year by year. As Games recently have been becoming more greedy, and built around recurring monetization. (This does not include PlayStation games)

Games from the 5th, 6th, and early 7th were built around compelling storylines, and fun. And asked only for a DualShock and our time.

Lastly, think of this. Games released during the 8th, and now 9th Gen. Will eventually be “old”. And wouldn’t it be nice to play them in 10 years or so with ease.

  • OK, but will I still be able to buy PSP games through the PS3?

  • It would’ve been better if you’ve announced full backwards compatibility on the ps5

    • Also bring back ps home or communities back to have a social environment on your platform. The playstation is isolated and we can’t connect together as a community anymore since you’ve removed all social features on your ecosystem.

  • Thanks Jim. I will ask another thing of you. It would be really nice if you could bring PS Home back online. Even if it wasn’t much help, now that communities is gone we could really use a new place to meet up. Why not offer it as a digital download title for PS3,4,5 ? Would be a great thing to have had during the pandemic.

  • this is amazing. it was the best news. well … i am here to thank you for the great initiative to continue with the stores of our favorite consoles. PS3 PSVITA. we are proud of you

  • I have recently discovered and bought Drakengard 3 along with all of its story DLC, which I wouldn’t have been able to do if the PS3 store had been closed already. Thank you very much for keeping the PS3 and Vita stores alive for people like me until a a suitable replacement for preserving and running its games locally can be achieved on modern hardware.

On a related note, I would also really appreciate if the recently-raised CMOS battery time bomb issue on PS3 and PS4 hardware can be fixed as well in an upcoming software update, as the last thing I want is to lose the ability to play my old purchases when the inevitable closure of online services for these consoles will occur. I regularly play retro games of old favorites and overlooked gems, and losing access to any of them due to an overlooked DRM technicality would be devastating to me.

  • This is great news! Now if only you could cancel the cash-grab that is TLOU remake and give us the sequel to Days Gone that we all want instead..

    • Yeah Last of Us remake after only 8 years is a bit silly really….remake The Legend of Dragoon instead please Sony!

    • The Last Of Us remake really isn’t necessary when it’s already playable on PS5 anyway and holds up extremely well. The PS4 remaster isn’t even old.

  • Thanks to reconsider… It is a opportunity to get back more classic games and promotions?
